Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This thesis is a study that investigates and analyzes the emotions of individuals appearing in public spaces in cities. The subject and research process are very interesting.
In particular, urban planners who actively study urban regeneration need to know what factors are needed in the decision-making process of urban design. Today, the element of'personal feelings' is a very important factor in urban planning.

In this study, the research process, survey method, survey content and analysis process were made reasonable and reasonable. However, as the researchers revealed at the conclusion of the study, there is a limit that not all emotions were answered in the questionnaire response, which could lead to response bias. If this part is supplemented in the follow-up study, we can expect better research results.

Very good paper about an issue that in recent time becomes more and more relevant for cities: the relation among real data and perception.

Authors clearly expose the main theme and the expected results, define a methodology, explain the data collection and comment the result in an appropriate way.

Language is very good and the readability of the paper il really high.

Probably it is the best paper I ever reviewed for "Sustainability".

In my opinion, accepted as is.

Overall, this study has good contribution on the discussion of the relationship between urban resident’s emotion and their satisfaction level to the urban open spaces.  Theories and concepts were discussed and adopted in this study that will benefits our readers to learn and work on further studies.  Whereas there are some more information needed to help readers to fully understand the meanings and procedures of this study:

  1. The concept of the terms adopted from different articles and the variables used in this study are similar but not same.  Although the author used several paragraph to discuss their relationships.  Yet, if there is a summary table to list and make the comparisons that will help readers to catch the conceptual basis of this study.
  2. On line 76, the author mentioned the tools of web-based Experience Sampling survey with geotagging functionality.  However, how this method can be see as a near real time experience method?  How does this methodology work?
  3. On line 84, This study was part of the POCK, how does this project influences the sampling of the data collection? How does the architecture in the testing site influences respondent’s emotion?
  4. From line 125 to line 142, the discussion of the proposed variables are duplicated in some degree with previous paragraphs. Reorganize these paragraphs will be help to make the discussion clear.
  5. In order to focus on the relationship in between open space experiences on the emotional state.  It will be better to see personal characteristics as a controlling variable or a mediating variable.
  6. The GPS not only represent the location, it also represent different spatial characters of the urban open space.  Other than location, the style of the architecture, the atmosphere of the communities will have strong effect on the momentary experiences.  Although the sample size was not small, however, does the sampling frequency similar at different areas?
  7. Location type, activity type and transportation mode have big different on the sample sizes.  Further re-grouping or statistically adjustment will improve the bias caused.
