Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a wonderful review paper!  It brings together so much contemporary information into one place and sets the stage for future studies that may use the leafless African Vanilla clade as a model system for a variety of studies.

I have only two minor comments:

  1. there are a few places where the English grammar is a bit unusual. For example, the first sentence of the Introduction says "Orchidaceae is one of the largest family".  It should say "families".  99% of the English is excellent, but there are just a few little things here and there.
  2. I see that the term "West Indies" is used in just a few places.  Today, there are many people from that region who consider the term offensive and related to British colonialism.  The more politically correct term is Caribbean, which the authors use also.  I would stick to the latter term and be consistent throughout.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper entitled “ The leafless Vanilla species-complex from the South-West Indian Ocean region: a taxonomic puzzle and a model for orchid evolution and conservation research” presents a valid and scientifically sound study on the genus Vanilla. The form, the English and the graphical supports are good. Minor  suggestions was made along the manuscript. In conclusion I recommend minor revisions for publication of the submitted manuscript.
