New Advances in Cement, Concrete and Building Materials: Structure, Properties and Applications
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Topic will focus on recent advances in concrete and building materials, highlighting how composition, microstructure and properties affect performance, durability and serviceability in diverse structural and infrastructure applications. Particular emphasis is placed on sustainable binders with supplementary cementitious materials, alkali-activated systems, concretes with recycled and alternative aggregates and fiber-reinforced and ultra-durable mixtures, as well as green cements and concretes for CO2 mineralization and specialized cements and grouts for demanding environments, including oil well cements for high-pressure and high-temperature conditions in energy and offshore structures.
We invite contributions that study structure–property–performance relationships through experimental characterization, microstructural analysis and durability assessment across different exposure conditions. Topics of interest include novel material formulations, admixtures and additives and advanced curing or processing routes, as well as applications in buildings, bridges, transport infrastructure, hydraulic works and subsurface or offshore constructions where tailored cementitious systems such as oil well cements are required.
Recent innovations include low-carbon concrete formulations incorporating supplementary cementitious materials, geopolymers and recycled aggregates; self-healing mechanisms through bio-based or encapsulated healing agents; ultra-high-performance concrete; nanotechnology-enhanced composites with improved mechanical properties and smart functionalities; integration of 3D printing that enables complex geometries with minimal waste; and embedded sensors for real-time structural health monitoring, and case studies demonstrating improved resilience, safety and sustainability in real projects are particularly welcome.
