Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Editorial Board, we are pleased to invite you to submit manuscripts for a Special Issue, titled “Night Shift Work and Health”, dedicated to the health consequences of night work.

Work performed during the night hours poses a significant challenge to human health, primarily due to the disruption of circadian rhythms. A growing body of evidence links night and shift work to sleep disorders, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems, and impaired quality of life. Importantly, night work has also been classified as a potential carcinogenic risk factor; however, the biological mechanisms underlying cancer development associated with circadian disruption remain incompletely understood and continue to be a subject of scientific debate.

This Special Issue aims to provide a multidisciplinary platform for advancing knowledge on both established and emerging health risks of night work, with particular emphasis on pathophysiological mechanisms, long-term outcomes, preventive strategies, and new modern professions that have not yet been analysed in the literature.

We welcome the submission of original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, meta-analyses, case studies, and interdisciplinary contributions. The scope encompasses a wide range of topics, including the following: Health effects of night work and shift work on physical and mental well-being; Circadian rhythm disruption and sleep disorders; and Night work and cancer risk, including current evidence and unresolved mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Papers concerning preventive measures, cyber hygiene, health-promoting interventions, and factors determining success in shift work are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Clocks & Sleep is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
