Despite the climate crisis, a significant barrier to sustainability is limitations to the current accounting and reporting system. These deficiencies, mean the global financial system continues to invest trillions of dollars annually in environmentally sub-optimal projects. To catalyze the economic transition away from fossil-fuel and plastic configurations to more sustainable ones, sustainability accounting and reporting (SAR) is imperative. However, theoretical contention, pragmatic concerns, and costs stoke strong resistance to SAR. The research used ablative thematic analysis to apply hermeneutic phenomenology. First, it scanned the backdrop to the SAR problem and identified a corpus of recent literature from key associated institutions. The initial interpretation of the texts disentangled SAR’s conflicting threads and generated three themes of ‘climate crisis’ and ‘conservative’ or more ‘radical’ SAR reform paradigms. Iteratively harnessing these thematic lenses, the investigation re-examined the SAR literature corpus. The textual ‘dialogue’ generated understanding of the fragmented SAR responses to the climate crisis. Accordingly, the research reformulated its first theme to ‘dystopic climate crisis fragmentation’ and refined the other themes to take account of materiality and the split between Anglo-Saxon (IFRS, SSAB) or global (UN) and continental European accounting institutions (EU, GRI). Conservatives retain a single materiality investor-focus and concede only incremental standard improvements. Radicals seek to implement double materiality with a broader spectrum of stakeholders in mind. Both approaches have theoretical as well as pragmatic advantages and disadvantages, so the SAR contention rumbles on. Whilst the standard-setting landscape is evolving, disagreements remain. Its roots of contention are philosophical and pragmatic. Philosophically, radicals strive to temper libertarian anarcho-capitalist proclivities and broaden firm responsibility. Pragmatically, social, or environmental externalities are problematic to assign or measure. Given vested interests in the destructive status quo, it would be naïve to expect a harmonious SAR Ithaca to emerge anytime soon. Yet the challenges impel an intensification of SAR dialogue and concrete actions. Rather than a scientifically nomothetic contribution, the paper provides a qualitative, artful interpretation of a complex, contentious but crucial field. Full article

Womens’ entrepreneurial endeavours, particularly in rural areas, have led to establishing Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) focused on tourism initiatives, significantly enhancing rural tourism experiences while promoting local culture. Co-creation, a concept extensively studied in the tourism industry, involves the collaborative generation of ideas in production and consumption driven by stakeholders with vested interests in specific products and services. Policy co-creation, in particular, has become a key driver in enhancing a country’s tourism competitiveness through a collaborative and inclusive development approach. Despite the extensive exploration of co-creation in tourism, the role of women entrepreneurs in this process remains underexamined. This study aims to address this gap by identifying and exploring co-creation initiatives that demonstrate how women entrepreneurs contribute to tourism policy and development. Using a qualitative research approach, it is based on thirty (30) semi-structured interviews with key tourism stakeholders, including policymakers, entrepreneurs, tourism professionals, and representatives from relevant organisations. Findings from the interviews underscore the central role of women entrepreneurs in the co-creation of tourism policies, particularly in rural areas. Their entrepreneurial contributions extend beyond economic growth, as they engage in shaping policies that support sustainable tourism and local development. Through their innovative approaches, women entrepreneurs regenerate traditional products by incorporating modern techniques, ensuring their offerings remain relevant and appealing to diverse visitor demographics and evolving market trends. This study further highlights that effective policy frameworks are crucial to enabling and amplifying women’s contributions to tourism development. Policies that support co-creation processes—such as inclusive decision making, funding accessibility, and capacity-building programs—play a transformative role in unlocking the potential of women entrepreneurs or encouraging more women to embark on an entrepreneurial venture within the tourism sector. Given the growing interest in sustainable tourism and the need to preserve ecological integrity, understanding how tourism resource development can coexist with biodiversity conservation is crucial, especially in ecologically sensitive regions. The Dabie Mountain region, with its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is a prime area for exploring the balance between tourism and environmental protection. Our study examined the spatial configuration of ecotourism resources in the Dabie Mountains, focusing on the role of ecosystem services, biodiversity hotspots, and traditional villages. Using the InVEST model, kernel density analysis, and a geographic detector, we found that the study area primarily consisted of lower-habitat-quality regions. Approximately 48,914.05 km2 (96.82% of the total area) was classified as low-quality habitat, presenting potential risks to biodiversity and ecosystem services in these regions. Higher habitat quality was observed in the eastern and southern regions, particularly in Yue Xi County, which exhibited superior biodiversity and habitat conditions compared to other administrative areas. Class V habitats, covering 39.89 km2 (31.69% of Class V area), were located in areas with greater terrain relief and proximity to water bodies, which contribute to higher biodiversity. This study identified a potential ecotourism development space of 649.79 km2, with a spatial distribution aligned with natural landscape features that support biodiversity conservation. Yue Xi and Jinzhai together accounted for 49.84% of the total ecotourism development space. Our study emphasizes the need to balance biodiversity conservation with tourism development, ensuring that ecotourism goals are met while preserving ecological integrity and cultural heritage. These findings provide a strong foundation for future research on biodiversity conservation in tourism development and offer insights for achieving sustainable ecological management in the region. Hyaluronidases have been a subject of great interest in medical and cosmeceutical applications. Previously, our group demonstrated that the venom glands of Vespa tropica contain hyaluronidase enzymes (VesT2s), and heterologous expression of the corresponding gene (VesT2a) in E. coli systems results in inclusion bodies, necessitating functional folding using urea. Here, we report the successful heterologous expression of VesT2a in the Pichia pastoris expression system, with gene construction achieved using GoldenPiCS. After confirming gene integration in the yeast genome, methanol-induced cultures yielded an exceptional amount of VesT2a, approximately two-fold higher than that obtained with the constitutive expression vector (PGAP). Upon culturing in a bioreactor, yeast cells harboring pAOX1-αMF-VesT2a produced secreted proteins with a total yield of 96.45 mg/L. The secreted VesT2a has a molecular weight of 59.35 kDa, significantly higher than the expected molecular weight (~40.05 kDa), presumably due to endogenous glycosylation by the yeast cells. It exhibits optimal activity at 37 °C and pH 3, showing a specific activity of 4238.37 U/mg, and remains active across a broad range of pH and temperature. Notably, it exhibits higher hyaluronidase activity than the crude venom and E. coli-expressed protein, likely due to improved folding via endogenous post-translational modifications, such as disulfide bonds and N-glycosylation; this underscores the potential of heterologous systems for producing venomous hyaluronidases from other species. In silico docking-based analyses further support its catalytic activity and provide insights into seeking natural inhibitors from phenolic-rich plant extracts to alleviate symptoms in patients suffering from insect bites and stings. Ecosystem services, encompassing the provision of food, water, air purification, climate regulation, and disease mitigation, form the bedrock upon which human well-being and socio-economic development are anchored. The preservation of these services is instrumental in safeguarding human survival and fostering progress. Qinghai Province, located on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, holds a pivotal role as a crucial ecological barrier within China. The optimization of its ecosystem services is vital for the effective management of ecologically fragile areas. This study focuses on Qinghai Province. By integrating natural geographic, social, and Points of Interest (POI) big data, we utilized tools like InVEST, CASA, and advanced algorithmic optimizations to analyze ecosystem services and their trade-off synergies in Qinghai from 2000 to 2020. Based on these synergies, we developed a novel optimization algorithm to generate spatial bundles that amplify synergistic interactions while minimizing costs. Our findings indicate that the following: (1) Between 2000 and 2020, recreational services, water yield, and habitat quality in Qinghai Province generally exhibited an upward trend, whereas carbon sequestration showed a decline; (2) Notable synergies were evident between carbon sequestration and habitat quality and between recreation services and habitat quality. Conversely, significant trade-offs were observed between water yield and habitat quality and between water yield and cultural services, with these trade-off synergy effects varying markedly across different regions; (3) We constructed ecosystem service bundles characterized by “strong synergy–weak trade-off” based on these relationships. Following optimization, regions demonstrating significant synergies expanded, while those showing significant trade-offs contracted, thereby adapting to the ecological heterogeneity of high-altitude areas. This study advances the optimization of ecosystem service bundles in ecologically sensitive zones through a lens of trade-off synergies. The results offer a scientific foundation for formulating effective ecological protection and restoration strategies, providing valuable insights for ecosystem service research in other high-altitude regions globally. Many domesticated dogs show signs of anxiety, negatively impacting their own and their owner’s mental and physical health. A systematic review evaluating whether pressure wraps decrease clinical signs of anxiety in dogs was completed to identify relevant studies. The main outcomes of interest included behavioral and physiological measures. A total of 229 studies were identified, of which four met the inclusion criteria. Commercially available pressure wraps and a telemetry vest were used in the reviewed studies. Three experimental studies included brief exposure to recorded firecracker or thunderstorm sounds or separation from their owner as anxiety-invoking stimuli. A non-experimental study evaluated the use of pressure wraps for dogs with thunderstorm phobia living in their home environment exposed to naturally occurring thunderstorms. The risk of bias in domains related to the blinding of investigators or study participants was generally high. Domains with moderate risk of bias often reflected incomplete reporting of research methods and imprecision due to small sample sizes. Most studies reported minimal benefits on behavior or heart rate in the absence of adverse side effects. Our review suggests there is weak and limited evidence to support the beneficial effect of pressure wraps in reducing physiological or behavioral signs of anxiety. Confidence in the available literature is low due to the moderate-to-high risks of bias and inconsistent findings. Further studies are needed regarding the efficacy of these products. Full article

Tropical rainforests are of vital importance to the environment, as they contribute to weather patterns, biodiversity and even human wellbeing. Hence, in the face of tropical deforestation, it becomes exigent to quantify and assess the contribution of ecosystem services associated with tropical rainforests to the environment and especially to the people. This study adopted a nuanced approach, different from traditional economic valuations, to estimate the water-related ecosystem services (WRESs) received by the people from 2010 to 2020 in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park (HTRNP). The study focused on water yield, soil conservation, and water purification using InVEST, the SCS-CNGIS model, and spatial analysis. The results show (1) significant land cover changes within the HTRNP, as forest decreased by 4433 ha and water bodies increased by 4047 ha, indicating the active presence of human activities. However, land cover changes were more pronounced within the 5 km buffer area around the HTRNP, suggesting the effectiveness of the tropical rainforest conservation efforts in place. (2) The water yield of the HTRNP in the years studied decreased by 307.03 km3, based on the water yields in 2010 and 2020, which were 5625.7 km3 and 5318.7 km3, respectively. (3) Change detection showed that runoff mitigation in the rainforest has a negative mean (−0.21), indicating a slight overall decrease in soil conservation and runoff mitigation in the rainforest from 2010 to 2020; however, the higher curve number indicates areas susceptible to surface runoff. (4) The ecological effectiveness of water purification to absorb and reduce nitrogen load was better in 2020 (145,529 kg/year), as it was reduced from 506,739 kg/year in 2010, indicating improved water quality. (5) Population growth is more pronounced in areas with high water yields. Overall, the proposed framework has shown that the water yield potential of the HTRNP can meet the water consumption demands of people and industries situated within the buffer area. However, analysis of the study shows that it does not meet the crop water requirements. This study provides insights for decision makers in identifying potential beneficiaries and the essence of effective area-based conservation measures, and the proposed framework can be applied to any area of interest, offering a different approach in ecosystem services assessment. Breast cancers can appear and progress rapidly, necessitating more frequent monitoring outside of hospital settings to significantly reduce mortality rates. Recently, there has been considerable interest in developing techniques for portable, user-friendly, and low-cost breast tumor monitoring applications, enabling frequent and cost-efficient examinations. Microwave technique-based breast cancer detection, which is based on differential dielectric properties of malignant and healthy tissues, is regarded as a promising solution for cost-effective breast tumor monitoring. This paper presents the development process of the first proof-of-concept of a breast tumor monitoring vest which is based on the microwave technique. Two unique vests are designed and evaluated on realistic 3D human tissue phantoms having different breast density types. Additionally, the measured results are verified using simulations carried out on anatomically realistic voxel models of the electromagnetic simulations. The radio channel characteristics are evaluated and analyzed between the antennas embedded in the vest in tumor cases and reference cases. Both measurements and simulation results show that the proposed vest can detect tumors even if only 1 cm in diameter. Additionally, simulation results show detectability with 0.5 cm tumors. It is observed that the detectability of breast tumors depends on the frequency, antenna selection, size of the tumors, and breast types, causing differences of 0.5–30 dB in channel responses between the tumorous and reference cases. Due to simplicity and cost-efficiency, the proposed channel analysis-based breast monitoring vests can be used for breast health checks in smaller healthcare centers and for user-friendly home monitoring which can prove beneficial in rural areas and developing countries. The construction industry presents significant high risks of injury and fatality to its workforce. Adopting prevention through design (PtD) principles is reported to have high potential for mitigating such risks and improving safety outcomes. PtD seeks to assess and reduce workplace hazards during the design phase, minimizing unsafe construction conditions. Despite its potential benefits, the construction industry encounters challenges in effectively utilizing PtD. Thus, the implementation of PtD in the US construction industry is limited, and designers’ awareness remains low. This evident lack of utilization warrants further examination of the contributing factors. The goal of this study is to identify and rank PtD utilization barriers in the United States (US) construction industry. This study pinpointed 12 pivotal barriers to PtD implementation through a systematic literature review. These barriers were categorized into industry-, project-, designer-, and client-related domains. Furthermore, they were grouped into three clusters based on their influence on PtD implementation from the most to the least influence, based on an expert matter questionnaire. This study also compared the experts’ rankings of the identified barriers with their citation frequencies in the reviewed articles. Among other observations, this study found that the lack of PtD professional training and formal education for project stakeholders negatively impacts the likelihood of PtD utilization and exacerbates several other barriers. Therefore, it is advisable to prioritize addressing this barrier by allocating the necessary resources and efforts to efficiently address it. Construction industry stakeholders with a vested interest in advancing PtD applications are encouraged to leverage the insights this study provides to expedite the adoption of PtD. Full article

Partaking in the editorial process of an academic journal is both a challenging and rewarding experience. It takes a village of dedicated individuals with a vested interest in the dissemination and sharing of high-quality research outputs. As members of the editorial team of an open access data journal, we reflect on the emergence of data-driven open research, a new journal genre (data paper), and a new journal type (data journal) in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS). Access to data—the currency of empirical research—is valuable to the research community, crucial to scientific integrity, and leads to cumulative advancements in knowledge. It therefore requires significant investment and appropriate venues for dissemination. We illustrate the necessity of raising awareness about data-driven open research and best practices in data-driven publishing. We discuss how it involves building a community of authors and readers, establishing a company of editors, reviewers, and support staff, and passing on the practice, which has been challenging the status quo in research and publishing. Potential future directions are considered, including data peer review and reward, recognition, and funding structures for data sharing. Full article

Amid Lebanon’s multifaceted economic crisis, this paper explores the intricate dynamics between political patronage networks and financial stability. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of New Institutional Economics (NIE) and Project Management (PM), the study delves into how entrenched political elites and patronage networks have shaped Lebanon’s financial system, exacerbating vulnerabilities and perpetuating the ongoing crisis. Utilizing qualitative methods including in-depth interviews, document analysis, and case studies, the research illuminates the pivotal role of political actors and their vested interests in economic policies and financial institutions. The findings reveal systemic governance failures, crony capitalism, and institutional decay as underlying causes of Lebanon’s economic stress. In response, the paper proposes a comprehensive framework for governance reform that integrates insights from NIE and PM, emphasizing structured planning, accountability mechanisms, and institutional strengthening. The purpose of this study is not only to contribute to a nuanced understanding of Lebanon’s challenges but also to offer actionable insights for policymakers, academics, and stakeholders to address the root causes of the crisis and pave the way for sustainable economic recovery and revitalization. The growing tension between economic development and ecological preservation in the Ili River Valley underscores the need for advanced analytical methods to effectively balance these interests. In this study, we utilized the InVEST model to quantify ecosystem services, combined with an analysis of ecological sensitivity, to comprehensively assess the ecological health of the region. By applying circuit theory, the research identified key ecological components such as sources, corridors, and critical nodes, alongside barriers; thus, mapping an ecological security pattern tailored specifically for the wetland oasis of the Ili River Valley. The analysis identified 15 ecological source sites covering 43,221.17 km2, 31 ecological corridors totaling 782 km in length, and 32 vital ecological nodes each exceeding 1 km2. Notably, 81.8% of these ecological source areas exhibited high ecological resilience, thus emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining the region’s ecological balance. The findings provide essential guidance for the ecological stewardship and management of the Ili River Valley and underscore the importance of incorporating ecological considerations within economic planning frameworks in arid regions. Climate change misinformation refers to inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading climate change-related information created and spread in the public domain. Despite substantial consensus among the scientific community on the reality of anthropogenic climate change, public opinion still remains divided. Combating the climate crisis requires immediate and meaningful actions; however, various actors generate and propagate climate change misinformation, with vested interests in sowing doubts in the public sphere about the reality and urgency of climate impacts. The United States of America, where public opinion holds a strong sway in many social and political spheres, acts as a pertinent case in point, where the prevalence of climate denial fueled by persistent climate change misinformation contributes to this divided public perspective. For this reason, it is imperative to enhance the understanding of the subtle ways climate change misinformation exists and functions. This article employs actor–network theory and the concept of black-boxing to explore a case of climate change misinformation in the United States, with the aim of comprehending the workings of climate change misinformation within its network. The Yangtze River Basin serves as an essential ecological shelter in China, yet it has encountered escalating aquatic ecological challenges. Exploring the spatial–temporal changes and the trade-off–synergy relationships of water-related ecosystem services (WESs) is necessary for formulating management and planning policies targeting the sustainable development of watersheds. In this study, the InVEST model is utilized to evaluate the spatial–temporal variations in water yield (WY), water purification (WP), and soil conservation (SC) in the Yangtze River Basin using remote-sensed data from 2001 to 2021. The spatial overlay method and a correlation analysis were adopted to reveal the trade-off–synergy relationship among the three WESs. Additionally, we performed a comparative analysis across the grid and sub-basin scales. The results showed that the multi-year average WY, WP, and SC were 536.10 mm, 1.32 kg/ha, and 250.08 t/ha, representing increasing rates of 4.74 mm/a, −0.001 kg/ha/a, and 1.88 t/ha/a, respectively. Moreover, the trade-off–synergy relationships of WESs exhibited spatial variability; specifically, the WY-WP, WP-SC, and WY-SC pairs demonstrated reduced synergy magnitude over time. The WES interactions were stable across the scales of interest, while synergy strength showed noticeable variability. The findings may contribute to the sustainable development of the Yangtze River Basin and enhance the comprehensive management of WESs. Full article

Sectoral Performance Trends and Differences in the Balkan and Eastern European Region

This article provides an empirical analysis aimed at evaluating the financial trends and disparities at the sector level within the Balkan and Eastern European region. The dataset encompasses a period of nine years and comprises more than 20 million firm-year observations from 24 industries in 21 countries. It uses 19 financial ratios to assess sectoral performance. In the empirical investigation, trend analysis and the two-step cluster analysis methods were used. Following the global financial crisis, a significant proportion of financial ratios exhibited favorable trends, indicating robust business and economic circumstances. Nevertheless, this trajectory was temporarily disrupted in 2020 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2021, the financial ratios had reverted back to their historical patterns. Country membership, margin, liquidity, trade turnover, profitability, and leverage ratios are the most effective variables for explaining differences in sectoral performance. Sector membership is a comparatively less influential factor. Although this study effectively identified significant disparities in financial ratio profiles, it does not suggest that companies in the most developed countries in the region attain the most favorable financial performance. Stakeholders who have a vested interest in this region should carefully contemplate the ramifications of the findings from this study. Full article
