Unveiling the relationship between the “Water–Carbon–Ecology” (W-C-E) footprints embodied in regional trade and resource flows is crucial for enhancing the synergistic benefits between economic development and environmental protection. This study constructs an association framework based on the Multi-Regional Input–Output (MRIO) model to systematically evaluate the “W-C-E” footprints and resource flow characteristics of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Yellow River Basin. By integrating import and export trade data, this study reveals the patterns of resource flows within and outside these regions. This research delineates the connection patterns between the “W-C-E” footprints and resource flows across three dimensions: spatial, sectoral, and environmental–economic factors. The results indicate that the Yangtze River Economic Belt has gained significant economic benefits from regional trade but also bears substantial environmental costs. Import and export trade further exacerbate the imbalance in regional resource flows, with the Yangtze River Economic Belt exporting many embodied resources through high-energy-consuming products, while the Yellow River Basin increases resource input by importing products such as food and tobacco. Sectoral analysis reveals that agriculture, electricity and water supply, and mining are the sectors with the highest net output of “W-C-E” footprints in both regions, whereas services, food and tobacco, and construction are the sectors with the highest net input. The comprehensive framework of this study can be extended to the analysis of resource–environment–economic systems in other regions, providing methodological support for depicting complex human–land system linkage patterns. Background: Youth tobacco use remains a significant public health concern, particularly in urban communities disproportionately burdened by health disparities. In Baltimore City, where tobacco-related harms are elevated, understanding the relationship between tobacco use—including e-cigarettes—and mental health among high school students is essential for guiding equitable prevention and cessation strategies. The CEASE (Communities Engaged and Advocating for a Smoke-free Environment) program, in collaboration with the American Lung Association’s Not On Tobacco (N-O-T) initiative, developed an online school-based survey to inform community-responsive interventions. Aims: This study aimed to examine the associations between cigarette use, including conventional cigarette use, and self-rated mental health among high school students in Baltimore City. Methods: High school students in Baltimore City completed an anonymous online survey that assessed demographic characteristics, tobacco knowledge and use, mental health, and related behaviors. Self-rated mental health was dichotomized as poor versus fair/good. Tobacco use categories included current use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes. Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between tobacco use and self-rated mental health, adjusting for age, gender, race, and parental education. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Results: No statistically significant associations were found between self-rated mental health and e-cigarette use and conventional tobacco use after adjusting for covariates. Conclusions: The absence of a significant association may reflect unique aspects of the social context in Baltimore City, where youth may not use tobacco products as a coping mechanism for mental health challenges. Alternatively, it may be due to limitations in measurement, particularly the use of a single-item mental health assessment. These findings should be considered preliminary. Future research using more comprehensive mental health measures and larger samples is warranted to further explore these complex relationships. Full article

Background: Cigar smoking poses significant public health challenges due to its rising prevalence and associated health risks. However, research on cigar use in China remains limited. This study investigates the prevalence, demographic characteristics, and key factors associated with cigar use among Chinese adults. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2018–2019 China Health Literacy Survey, including 86,701 participants aged 20–69 years. Multistage stratified sampling was employed, and logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for factors associated with cigar use. Weighted data were applied to ensure national representation. Results: Of the 86,701 respondents, 1025 participants reported having used cigars, including 248 exclusive cigar users and 777 dual users of cigars and other tobacco products. Cigar use was significantly higher among men (1.93%) than women (0.05%). Most users were aged 50–59, with a mean age of 49.3 years. Factors associated with cigar use among men included higher education (for college and higher, OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.42–2.30), lower household income (for income < 20,000, OR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.08–1.53), poor self-reported health (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.15–1.83), and severe nicotine dependence (FTND ≥ 7 points, OR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.67–2.61). Cigar use prevalence showed notable regional variation, with the highest rates observed in northern and eastern provinces. Interpretation: The estimated number of cigar users in China is approximately 10.46 million. Male cigar users often represent a unique demographic: “knowledgeable but economically marginalized” individuals, characterized by higher education but lower economic status. Tailored tobacco control measures addressing regional disparities, socioeconomic factors, and marketing-driven misconceptions about cigars are essential to reduce public health impacts. Full article

Soil microbial communities contribute to the growth, health, and productivity of crops during agricultural production, and yet it is not clear how different fertilization practices affect the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence network of soil bacterial communities at different stages of growing tobacco. Here, we report the characteristics of changes in soil bacterial communities at different tobacco growth stages and fallow periods after fertilizer application by selecting long-term continuous crop tobacco fields with different fertilizers (control (CK), a cattle manure organic fertilizer (OM), a cattle manure organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer mix (MNPK), a chemical fertilizer (NPK), and crushed straw (ST)) at the time of tobacco planting, combined with high-throughput sequencing technology and molecular ecological network methods. The results showed that soil bacterial diversity did not respond significantly to fertilizer application during the growing period of roasted tobacco, which only increased bacterial diversity in the fallow period. The key taxa of the co-occurrence network were lost during the peak and maturity periods of tobacco cultivation and were gradually recovered after fallowing. The choice of straw, chemical fertilizer, and cow manure organic fertilizer mixed with chemical fertilizer when planting tobacco can better feed the growth of roasted tobacco, and the choice of an organic matter fertilizer (straw and cow manure) as the base fertilizer can accelerate the repair of the bacterial co-occurrence network after the soil has been fallowed and improve the subhealth of the planted tobacco soil. The habit of smoking in its various forms represents a significant public health concern due to its wide range of pathological effects, included the oral cavity. In recent years, alternatives to traditional cigarettes, such as heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, have gained popularity and are often marketed as potentially less harmful options. This study seeks to evaluate and compare the morphometric characteristics of oral mucosal capillaries in individuals who consume combusted tobacco, heated tobacco, vaporized liquid, and non-smokers. Using videocapillaroscopy, we assessed both parametric and non-parametric data from 60 patients, divided into four groups according to their smoking habits. The analysis revealed significant differences in capillary morphology among the groups. Users of combusted tobacco exhibited pronounced reductions in capillary diameter, alongside increased tortuosity and the presence of microaneurysms. These alterations are indicative of chronic inflammation and vasoconstriction, likely driven by exposure to nicotine and the high temperatures associated with combustion. Conversely, users of heated tobacco and vaporized liquid exhibited comparatively fewer vascular abnormalities, although angiogenic effects attributable to nicotine were still observable. These findings suggest that alternative tobacco products may have a comparatively lesser impact on the oral microcirculation when compared to traditional smoking. However, the potential long-term effects of these products remain unclear. Further longitudinal research is required to fully understand the risks associated with prolonged use of heated tobacco and electronic cigarettes. Full article

A field experiment was conducted in 2018 at Marciano della Chiana (Arezzo, AR, Central Italy) with the main aim of investigating the effect of soil amendment with organic fraction municipal solid waste (OFMSW) compost and legume green manuring (Vicia villosa Roth, cv. villana) on a tobacco crop (dark fire-cured Kentucky type, cv. Foiano) grown under both full (100% of ETc) and deficit (70% of crop evapotranspiration, ETc) irrigation. The treatments are hereafter reported as GM (vetch green manuring) and NGM (no vetch green manuring), FI (full irrigation) and DI (deficit irrigation), and C (compost soil amendment) and NC (no compost soil amendment). The following parameters were calculated: (i) yield of the cured product (CLY, Mg ha−1) at a standard moisture content of 19%; (ii) irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE, kg of cured product m−3 seasonal irrigation volume), nitrogen (N) agronomic efficiency (NAE, kg of cured product kg−1 mineral N by synthetic fertilizers). Dry biomass accumulated in the stem and leaves (Mg ha−1) was also measured at 25, 57, 74, and 92 days after transplanting (DAT). The N recovery from the different plant parts (kg ha−1) was determined at 57 and 74 DAT. The C/N ratio, NO3-N (kg ha−1), the soil organic matter (SOM, %), and the soil contents of P2O5 and K2O (mg kg−1) were also analytically determined at 43, 74, and 116 DAT. Water retention measurements were carried out on soil samples at 116 DAT at 0–0.3 and 0.3–0.6 soil depths. Overall, there was a negative effect of both compost amendment and green manuring on yield. Green manuring and compost soil amendment improved soil chemical characteristics (i.e., SOM and C/N), as well as the plant N recovery, the IWUE, and the NAE. They increased the water retention capacity of the soil when the tobacco crop was deficit-irrigated and appeared to be promising practices to support the deficit irrigation strategy, contributing to reaching good agronomic results, although under the conditions of water shortage, and showing synergistic action in those conditions. Cigarette brand variant names and characteristics such as the taste and feel of the smoke can mislead consumers into believing some products are less harmful. We assessed the characteristics of three common cigarette variants sold in Australia, “gold”, “blue” and “red”, to determine which characteristics differed by color, and which affected tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide (TNCO) yields. TNCO yields, physical parameters, expanded tobacco and filter ventilation were measured in cigarette color variants from eight brands. Filter ventilation and expanded tobacco were common across brands and variants. Compared to blue and red variants, gold variants had slightly shorter tobacco rods and greater filter ventilation. Gold variants had lower TNCO when measured using the industry-favored International Organization for Standardization (ISO) protocol. ISO-measured TNCO yields were associated with filter ventilation and tobacco rod length, but not use of expanded tobacco. When measured using the Health Canada Intensive (HCI) protocol, which better emulates human smoking behavior, TNCO emissions were markedly higher, and the emission differences by extent of filter ventilation were minimized, indicating that ISO measurements are misleading. These findings confirm that cigarette color names, and the filter ventilation levels they signify, remain misleading more than a decade after plain packaging eliminated pack colors in Australia, as higher levels of filter ventilation are not associated with reduced TNCO emissions measured using the HCI protocol. Consumer education and communication campaigns could amplify the impacts of Australia’s newly passed tobacco legislation banning color and other variant names that imply reduced harm. Full article

Background: There is limited evidence on how the United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposed ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars will impact individuals with mood disorders who smoke menthol cigarettes. This study aimed to evaluate how individuals with mood disorders who smoke menthol cigarettes might respond to a hypothetical ban on menthol cigarettes, explore the reasons for their current use, and examine how these reasons are associated with participants’ characteristics. Methods: Study data were collected at baseline from adults (18+ years) with mood disorders who participated in a randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of gradual nicotine reduction. Participants were individuals who smoked and had no plan to quit in the next six months. They reported demographics and tobacco consumption patterns, interest in quitting, and responded to a hypothetical question on a potential ban on menthol cigarettes. The question asked participants which actions they would most likely take if menthol-flavored cigarettes were banned. Means and frequencies were used to describe the sample. Logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with each reason for menthol use (less harmful, better flavor, less harsh on the throat, and less harsh on the chest). Results: Participants (n = 77) were an average age of 42.5 (SD 12.5) years, 61% (n = 47) were female, 68.8% (n = 53) identified as White, and 5.2% (n = 4) identified as Hispanic. On average, participants reported currently smoking 18.1 (SD 9.9) cigarettes per day and had smoked for 23.9 (SD 13.6) years. About 58.4% of participants (n = 45) expressed their intention to switch to non-menthol cigarettes, 19.5% (n = 15) intended to transition to a different type of tobacco product, and 22.1% (n = 17) intended to quit smoking entirely without substitution. The most endorsed reason for using menthol cigarettes was better flavor (89.6%, n = 69/77), followed by less harshness on the throat (41.3%, n = 31/75) and chest (40%, n = 30/75), and the belief that they were less harmful than non-menthol cigarettes (24%, n = 18/75). Older age was associated with the belief that menthol cigarettes were less harmful (OR = 1.06; p = 0.02). Conclusion: Among individuals with mood disorders and who smoke menthol cigarettes and have no plans to quit smoking, 22.1% may try to quit smoking if a menthol ban is implemented, while the majority (58.4%) stated that they would switch to non-menthol cigarettes. As the reasons for using menthol cigarettes included perceived lower harm, there is a need for targeted public awareness campaigns to correct misconceptions about the harms of menthol cigarettes. Uncovering the structure of lignin from biorefinery has an important effect on lignin catalytic depolymerization and the production of bioenergy. In this study, two biorefinery lignins were isolated from tobacco stalks via alkaline and deep eutectic solvent (DES) catalyzed delignification processes, and the lignin heterogeneity structural characteristics were elucidated by gel permeation chromatography, 2D-HSQC, FT-IR, etc., to understand the relationship between the structure and the thermal characteristics of lignin. It was found that the lignins presented various structural characteristics and components, in which the predominant interunit linkages of black liquor lignin are β-O-4 and β-β linkages, and the β-O-4 linkages disappeared by DES treatment. DES lignins exhibited lower molecular weights and yields than black liquor lignin. Thermogravimetric analysis and fixed-bed pyrolysis were also performed to investigate the lignin thermal behavior. The results show that the DES approach can improve the bio-oil production from lignin and highlight the potential of DES lignin as a promising feedstock in the lignin pyrolysis process. This work provides a valuable example of the conversion of biorefinery lignin into pyrolysis products. Full article

New-generation disposable e-cigarettes have become increasingly popular among young adults in the USA since the FDA’s partial flavor ban. This study aims to examine longitudinal changes in health risks among young adults who adopted these novel products, as well as the health effects of device types beyond the effects of other important e-cigarette characteristics. This study recruited e-cigarette users via voluntary response sampling from three college campuses in the USA to respond to four-wave online surveys conducted in four consecutive semesters. Among the participants who adopted disposables during the study, their health risks (dependence symptoms, respiratory symptoms, combustible tobacco use) and e-cigarette consumption characteristics (use frequency, nicotine concentration and flavors) before and after the adoption were compared using paired-sample t- or McNemar’s tests. Generalized linear mixed models with a random intercept were conducted on data from the entire sample to investigate the effects of device type (tank, cartridge/pod, disposable) on health risks, controlling for other e-cigarette consumption characteristics. The study sample of 650 e-cigarette users were, on average, 20 years old, with 49% being male, 70% being White, and 13% being Hispanic. Adopting disposables may increase secondary dependence motives (t = 2.42, p < 0.05) and the use of higher levels of nicotine concentration (t = 2.09, p < 0.05) and sweet flavors (x2 = 22.53, p < 0.05) but decrease the number of times of vaping per day (t = −2.18, p < 0.05) and the use of menthol flavors (x2 = 4.57, p < 0.05). Tank use is associated with a higher level of primary dependence motives (b = 0.1998, p < 0.05) and a greater odds of using combustible tobacco (b = 0.4772, p < 0.05). Although disposable use is not associated with the likelihood of using combustible tobacco, it is associated with higher levels of both primary (b = 0.2158, p < 0.05) and secondary (b = 0.2533, p < 0.05) dependence motives. It is not the device type, but rather the frequency of vaping, that affects respiratory symptoms (b = 0.0602, p < 0.05). The findings indicate that when young adults switch to disposables, their e-cigarette dependence and use of sweet-flavored e-liquids increase. Even after controlling for use frequency, nicotine concentration and flavors, using disposables is related to not only instrumental motives that are influenced by psychological and environmental contexts but also heavy, automatic use that can operate without environmental cues. Given the health risks associated with disposable e-cigarettes, more comprehensive tobacco product regulations that consider the impact of device types may be needed. Full article

The Effects of Smoking on Dental Implant Failure: A Current Literature Update

Background: This systematic review assesses the current literature (2020–2024) evaluating the impact of smoking on dental implant failure rates. Methods: A non-funded Pubmed database review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, and the results were tabulated to extract the study design, patient characteristics, follow-up time, comparison, outcome, and strengths and weaknesses, including risk of bias. This review included 33 studies with 29,519 implants placed in over 18,301 patients. We included prospective and retrospective clinical studies, randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and observational studies that examined smoking’s effects on implant failure rates. Studies had to classify individuals into two groups, smokers and non-smokers, with at least ten implants. Exclusions included reviews, case reports, experimental studies, guidelines, non-English publications, studies lacking comparative data on failure rates, those excluding smokers, and studies focusing on head and neck cancer patients or specialized implants. Results: Our findings indicate a significant correlation in 25 out of 33 studies between smoking and increased implant failure rates, affecting both early and late stages of implant integration and survival as well as revealing a dose–response relationship, with higher daily cigarette consumption significantly increasing the risk of implant failure. Conclusions: This review highlights the importance of smoking cessation efforts, patient education, and tailored patient care in dental implantology. Future research should explore the effects of smoking frequency and alternative tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, aiming to improve success rates among smokers. Full article

With the increasing concerns of human health and the ecological environment, tobacco stalks from the cigarette industry have been recognized as hazardous wastes requiring cautious treatment. However, there is still a lack of a simple and efficient route for full utilization of tobacco stalks. Herein, we attempted to convert tobacco stalk waste to value-added carbohydrates, bio-oil, and biochar through sequential hydrothermal and pyrolysis treatments. The results showed a high carbohydrate yield under the optimized condition using a microwave reaction system. The subsequent pyrolysis of residual solids at high temperatures could produce unexpected high-level aromatic chemicals including phenols and even benzenes—difficult to form without the facilitation of catalysts or salts. The obtained by-product biochar showed rapid absorption of tetracycline in 5 min and gradual introparticle diffusion from 30 to 240 min. The isotherm result had the characteristics of the Langmuir model, displaying homogeneous active sites on the biochar surface. Probably due to the hydrothermal pretreatment before pyrolysis, the obtained biochar exhibited a high adsorption capacity toward tetracycline without introducing the activation chemicals. These results illustrate that the proposed strategy may pave the way for dealing with tobacco wastes in the agricultural field. Full article

The quality of crops is closely associated with their geographical location and yield, which is reflected in the composition of their metabolites. Hence, we employed GC–MS pseudotargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic characteristics of high-, medium-, and low-yield Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) leaves from the Bozhou (sweet honey flavour) and Shuicheng (light flavour) regions of Guizhou Province. A total of 124 metabolites were identified and classified into 22 chemical categories. Principal component analysis revealed that the geographical location exerted a greater influence on the metabolic profiling than the yield. Light-flavoured tobacco exhibited increased levels of sugar metabolism- and glycolysis-related intermediate products (trehalose, glucose-6-phosphate, and fructose-6-phosphate) and a few amino acids (proline and leucine), while sweet honey-flavoured tobacco exhibited increases in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) and the phenylpropane metabolic pathway (p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, and maleic acid). Additionally, metabolite pathway enrichment analysis conducted at different yields and showed that both Shuicheng and Bozhou exhibited changes in six pathways and four of them were the same, mainly C/N metabolism. Metabolic pathway analysis revealed higher levels of intermediates related to glycolysis and sugar, amino acid, and alkaloid metabolism in the high-yield samples, while higher levels of phenylpropane in the low-yield samples. This study demonstrated that GC–MS pseudotargeted metabolomics-based metabolic profiling can be used to effectively discriminate tobacco leaves from different geographical locations and yields, thus facilitating a better understanding of the relationship between metabolites, yield, and geographical location. Consequently, metabolic profiles can serve as valuable indicators for characterizing tobacco yield and geographical location. Full article

Why Do Physicians in Japan Use e-Cigarettes and/or Heated Tobacco Products? A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: The tobacco industry has actively advocated for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) as harm-reduction alternatives to traditional cigarettes. Around 40% of smoking physicians have adopted HTPs. This study aimed to uncover the motivations behind Japanese physicians’ e-cigarette and HTP use while analyzing the associations between product use, physician demographics, lifestyles, and smoking preferences. Methods: A mail-based survey was conducted in 2020, targeting 6000 male and 1500 female physicians. From the 5492 survey participants, 346 physicians aged 28 to 98 who were current smokers were selected. The survey assessed their usage of e-cigarettes and HTPs and explored the reasons for initial adoption. A multivariate logistic regression analysis examined the relationships between product use, physician characteristics, and behaviors. Results: Approximately 33.8% of smoking physicians had experimented with e-cigarettes and HTPs. E-cigarette and HTP use correlated with youthfulness, nicotine addiction, and a history of medical treatment. The primary drivers for adopting e-cigarettes and HTPs were reduced odor (74.4%), perceived harm reduction (48.7%), and decreased exposure to secondhand smoke (29.1%). Conclusions: Physicians, when transitioning from conventional cigarettes to HTPs or e-cigarettes, are primarily motivated by a desire to reduce the odor of conventional cigarettes rather than health-related concerns. Electronic cigarette use is growing in popularity and accessibility among youth in the Southeast Asia region. We analyzed data on 6670 students, aged 13–15 years, from the Philippines’ 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated for current use (i.e., past 30 days), ever use, and awareness of e-cigarettes. Chi-square tests compared prevalence differences between groups. Multiple logistic regression models assessed factors associated with e-cigarette use while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, current use of other tobacco products, and secondhand smoke exposure. Prevalence of current e-cigarette use was 14.1% (95% CI = 12.4%, 15.8%), ever use was 24.6% (95% CI = 22.4%, 26.9%), and awareness was 75.5% (95% CI = 73.0%, 78.0%). Current use of any other tobacco products and exposure to secondhand smoke at home, school, or other public places were positively associated with current and ever use of e-cigarettes. Boys and youth living in Luzon or Mindanao had higher odds of current e-cigarette use compared to girls and youth in Visayas. Findings indicated that one in four Philippine students aged 13–15 years ever used e-cigarettes and one in seven currently use e-cigarettes. This study highlights the importance of implementing evidence-based strategies, including relevant tobacco control policies. Full article
