Genetically Shared Signatures Between COVID-19 and Cancer Identified Through In Silico Case–Control Analysis

Background/Objectives: Cancer patients are highly susceptible to infectious diseases due to malignancy- and treatment-induced immunosuppression. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted this vulnerability, particularly in aggressive tumors such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). However, the molecular mechanisms linking cancer progression with COVID-19 severity remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify shared molecular signatures between COVID-19 and TNBC, breast cancer, and ccRCC using integrative bioinformatics approaches. Methods: A comprehensive in silico case–control analysis was conducted using publicly available GEO transcriptomic datasets (GSE164805, GSE139038, GSE45498, and GSE105261). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by comparing mild and severe COVID-19 cases with each cancer type. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks were constructed to identify hub genes, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. Regulatory networks involving microRNAs (miRNAs) and transcription factors (TFs) were also examined. Results: Shared hub genes were identified across COVID-19 and cancer datasets, including IGF1, MMP9, and NOTCH1 in TNBC; TOP2A, PXN, and CCNB1 in breast cancer; and ASPM and TTK in ccRCC. These genes are linked to immune regulation, inflammation, cell cycle control, and tumor progression. Enrichment analyses revealed convergent pathways such as MAPK signaling, cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction, Ras signaling, and proteoglycans in cancer. Key regulatory molecules, including miR-145-5p, miR-192-5p, miR-335-5p, and transcription factors NFKB1, BRCA1, and TP53, modulated both viral and oncogenic processes. Severe COVID-19 was associated with enhanced inflammatory and proliferation-related signaling across all cancer types. Conclusions: This integrative, severity-stratified analysis identifies shared molecular and regulatory features linking severe COVID-19 with aggressive cancers, highlighting persistent immune activation and altered immune communication as common underlying themes without implying causality or clinical outcome effects. These findings provide a systems-level, hypothesis-generating framework for understanding virus–cancer interactions and may inform future biomarker discovery and immune-focused therapeutic strategies in vulnerable cancer populations. The experiences and repercussions of the cross-border migration process on family life have not yet been synthesized. This study aimed to synthesize the best available qualitative findings on this theme. A systematic review of qualitative evidence with meta-synthesis was conducted. Articles were identified according to predefined extraction criteria in the first half of 2025, across seven databases: Web of Science, MEDLINE/PubMed, PsycINFO, LILACS, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Social Science Citation Index. Two researchers independently screened and appraised the reports, assessing methodological quality and systematically recording and analyzing relevant information. A protocol was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024505655). Fifty studies were included, and three main themes emerged: (a) living in multiple possible contexts, where space and relationships influence family functionality, including reduced family time due to long working hours, substance use, fear of losing cultural roots, new financial responsibilities, and the desire to return to the country of origin; (b) challenges and repercussions on family life after migration, such as increased family conflicts, mental health problems, separation, and loss of ties; (c) strategies for maintaining family functioning, including role adjustment, strengthening of family ties, and support through cultural and religious practices. Families undergoing migration face multiple challenges in their new environments, revealing the complexity of adapting to diverse cultural and social contexts. These findings highlight the need to address the emotional and social demands of migrant families to improve well-being and integration. Understanding these dynamics allows healthcare professionals to design culturally sensitive interventions that promote reception and inclusion. Full article

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into organizational processes to enhance efficiency, decision-making, and innovation, aligning AI systems with human teams remains a major challenge to realizing their full potential. Although academic interest is growing, the conceptual landscape of human–AI relationships remains fragmented. This study employs a bibliometric co-word analysis of 4093 peer-reviewed documents indexed in Scopus to map the intellectual structure of the field. Using a strategic diagram, we assess the relevance and maturity of five major thematic clusters identified in the field. Results highlight the structural dominance of Human–AI Interactions (Centrality: 1595), Human–AI Collaboration (1150), and Teaming and Augmentation (1131) as foundational themes, while Conversational AI (655), and Ethics and Responsibility (431) emerge as specialized domains. Based on the analysis, we propose a conceptual framework that classifies human–AI relationships into four categories—symbiotic, augmented, assisted, and substituted intelligence—according to the level of AI autonomy and human involvement. Rather than providing prescriptive guidance for practitioners, this framework is intended primarily as a scholarly contribution that clarifies the conceptual landscape and supports future theoretical and empirical work. While potential implications for organizational contexts can be inferred, these are secondary to the study’s main goal of offering a research-based synthesis of the field. Ultimately, our work contributes to academic consolidation by offering conceptual clarity and highlighting opportunities for future research, while underscoring the critical need for ethical alignment and interdisciplinary dialogue to guide future AI adoption. Background/Objectives: Nurses working in closed psychiatric wards experience substantial psychosocial and spiritual burdens, emotional strain, and ethical tension due to continuous exposure to patients in crisis. As formal caregivers, nurses’ health and multidimensional well-being are essential for sustaining compassionate, dignity-preserving practice. However, the lived meaning of self-care within highly restrictive psychiatric environments remains insufficiently understood. This study explores how psychiatric nurses in South Korea experience and interpret self-care. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological design was used. Eight psychiatric nurses with more than three years of experience in closed psychiatric wards participated in in-depth, face-to-face interviews conducted between August 2018 and January 2019. Data were analysed using Colaizzi’s method to identify and synthesise essential themes. Results: Five categories captured the essence of nurses’ self-care experiences: (1) struggling to establish therapeutic roles as a psychiatric nurse; (2) conflating professional identity with ideals of good nursing; (3) recognising a gradual loss of motivation and hope to continue psychiatric nursing; (4) acknowledging the need to care for oneself and refocus on inner vitality; and (5) engaging in self-care through interactions with patients. Self-care was understood as a reflective, relational, and transformative process rather than as a set of stress-relief activities. Conclusions: Psychiatric nurses perceived self-care as an existential journey involving vulnerability, self-reflection, and renewal, which fostered both personal and professional growth. By framing self-care as an ethically grounded, relational practice that sustains therapeutic presence and safeguards moral and professional integrity, this study extends existing self-care literature beyond behavioural strategies. Knowledge management (KM) is crucial for organisational success in volatile, uncertain, and ambiguousenvironments, however persistent operationalization issues hinder its interaction with Project Management (PM) and Human Resource Management (HRM). In construction, skill shortages, demographic shifts, rapid technological breakthroughs, and project complexity disrupt organisational knowledge systems. This study examines the growth of KM in construction research and how it’s integration with PM and HRM might improve organisational resilience. This staged review included bibliometric analysis and narrative synthesis. A bibliometric mapping of Scopus and Web of Science peer-reviewed literature (1998–2024) identified publishing trends and theme clusters, followed by rigorous screening and narrative synthesis of the final corpus. Analysis showed a considerable growth in KM-related construction research since 2016. A repository-focused strategy is giving way tointerconnected, human-centred frameworks that highlight social interaction, governance, and digital capability development. Five literature gaps remain: (1) limited operationalisation of core KM constructs like trust, socialisation, and knowledge transfer; (2) misalignment between KM, PM, and HRM domains; (3) inadequate integration of human-centred knowledge practices with emerging digital technologies; (4) a lack of cross-regional comparative research; and (5) a weak theory–practice bridge for KM implementation in construction organisations. Through gap synthesis, this work provides an organised approach for future research, along with practical advice on KM-PM and HRM integration for organisational resilience. Full article

Classical Arabic poetry played a powerful social role in Arab society, particularly during the Jāhiliyya (pre-Islamic) period, due to its high level of eloquence (faṣāḥa) and balāgha. Within this poetic tradition—shaped around themes such as heroism (ḥamāsah), boasting (fakhr), satire (hijā’), and love (tashbīb)—‘aṣabiyya occupied a central position as a means of constructing and preserving tribal identity through language. Poets exalted their own tribes and disparaged rival ones by employing persuasive and emotionally charged expression. With the revelation of the Qur’an in 610 CE, this literary and cultural heritage, grounded in aesthetic and expressive power, was reconfigured within a new religious framework. The Qur’an’s challenge-oriented discourse entered into direct interaction with existing poetic sensibilities. Against this background, the present study examines the transformation of ‘aṣabiyya in classical Arabic poetry during the early Islamic period. It offers a comparative analysis of lineage-centered ‘aṣabiyya in Jāhiliyya poetry and the emergence of an ummah-centered discourse of unity in Islamic poetry, drawing on poems by different poets from both periods. Using content analysis, rhetorical text analysis, and inductive methods, the study demonstrates that the Qur’an’s influence on Arabic poetry was neither uniform nor one-dimensional but significantly shaped poetic themes and authorial attitudes. By focusing on ‘aṣabiyya, the article aims to contribute to a renewed understanding of the Qur’an–poetry relationship in early Islam. Full article

Unless the psychosocial challenges experienced by widows in low-resourced communities are unpacked and understood, efforts to offer them proper and befitting interventions for their experiences will remain scant in South Africa. This paper explores the psychosocial challenges faced by widows in Ngaka Modiri Molema, a district in South Africa’s North West Province with limited resources. Using a qualitative approach and an exploratory descriptive design, this study employed homogeneous purposive sampling to ensure inclusion of widows who have experienced the psychosocial challenges of widowhood in Ngaka Modiri Molema. In-depth interviews conducted with twelve widows provided data saturation. The data were analysed thematically using predetermined and emerging themes, critically discussed and compared to the existing literature. The findings revealed that there were endemic and unexplored psychological issues such as anxiety, stress and depression, whilst some social challenges such as property disputes, eviction from the land and stigma were experienced by widows in the district since the death of their husbands. This paper recommends relevant holistic interventions to ameliorate the psychosocial challenges experienced by the widows in the district. Full article

Social organizations increasingly rely on Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze large-scale textual data for high-stakes decisions, including university admissions, financial aid allocation, and job hiring. Current methods primarily employ topic modeling and sentiment analysis, but they fail to capture the complex ways emotions and cultural contexts shape meaning in text, potentially perpetuating bias and undermining equitable decision-making. To address this gap, we introduce the Behavioral and Emotional Theme Detection (BET) framework, a novel approach that integrates emotional, cultural, and sociological dimensions into topic detection and emotion analysis. By applying BET to English and Hebrew datasets, we showcase its multilingual adaptability and its potential to reveal rich thematic content and emotional resonance in biographical texts. Our results demonstrate that BET not only enhances the granularity and diversity of detected themes but also tracks shifts in emotional framing over time, offering deeper insights into how individuals deploy linguistic resources to position their identities, enabling more equitable assessment practices. Chronic pain is inherently multifactorial, with biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to neuropathic pain (NP) and central sensitization (CS) syndromes. Comorbidity between functional disorders and the lack of clinical biomarkers adds to the challenge of diagnosis and treatment, leading to frustration for healthcare professionals and patients. Available treatments are limited, increasing patient suffering with personal and financial costs. This systematic review examined multisensory processing alterations in chronic pain and reviewed current pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. A structured search was conducted on the PubMed database using the keywords Central Sensitization, Fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and Neuropathic Pain, combined with the keywords Vision, Audition, Olfaction, Touch, Taste, and Proprioception. Papers were then filtered to discuss current treatment approaches. Articles within the last five years, from 2018 to 2023, have been included. Papers were excluded if they were animal studies; investigated tissue damage, disease processes, or addiction; or were conference proceedings or non-English. Results were summarized in table form to allow synthesis of evidence. As this study is a systematic review of previously published research rather than a clinical trial or experimental investigation, the risk of bias was assessed independently by at least two reviewers. 138 studies were identified and analyzed. Of these, 96 focused primarily on treatment options for chronic pain and were analyzed for this systematic review. There were a few emerging themes. No one therapy is effective, so a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, including pharmacological, somatic, and psychological treatment, is generally predicted to achieve the best outcomes. Cranial neurovascular compromise, especially of the trigeminal, glossopharyngeal, and potentially the vestibulocochlear nerve, is being increasingly revealed with the advancement of neuroimaging. Cortical and deep brain stimulation to evoke neuroplasticity is an emerging and promising therapy and warrants further investigation. Finally, including patients in their treatment plan allows them control and offers the ability to self-manage their pain. Risk of bias limits the ability to judge the quality of evidence. Research on road transport infrastructures is rapidly evolving as electrification, automation, and digital connectivity reshape how systems are designed, operated, and managed. This study presents a combined bibliometric, scientometric, and network analysis of 2755 publications published between 2021 and 2025 to map the intellectual structure, main contributors, and dominant technological themes shaping contemporary road transport research. Using data from the Web of Science Core Collection, co-occurrence mapping, thematic analysis, and collaboration networks were generated using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer. The results reveal strong growth in research output, with China, the United States, and Europe forming the core of high-impact publication and collaboration networks. Six bibliometric clusters were identified and consolidated into three overarching domains: road transport systems, emphasizing vehicle dynamics, control, and real-time computational frameworks; energy and efficiency-oriented mobility research, focusing on electrification, optimization, and infrastructure integration; and emerging digital technologies, including IoT, AI, and autonomous vehicles. The analysis highlights persistent research gaps related to interoperability, cybersecurity, large-scale deployment, and governance of intelligent transport infrastructures. Overall, the findings provide a data-driven overview of current research priorities and structural patterns shaping next-generation road transport systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Federated learning (FL) offers a way for healthcare institutions to collaboratively train machine learning models without sharing sensitive patient data. This systematic review aims to comprehensively synthesize the ethical dimensions of FL in healthcare, integrating privacy preservation, algorithmic fairness, governance, and equitable access into a unified analytical framework. The application of FL in healthcare between January 2020 and December 2024 is examined, with a focus on ethical issues such as algorithmic fairness, privacy preservation, governance, and equitable access. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, six databases (PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, Scopus, ACM Digital Library, and arXiv) were searched. The PROSPERO registration is CRD420251274110. Studies were selected if they described FL implementations in healthcare settings and explicitly discussed ethical considerations. Key data extracted included FL architectures, privacy-preserving mechanisms, such as differential privacy, secure multiparty computation, and encryption, as well as fairness metrics, governance models, and clinical application domains. Results: Out of 3047 records, 38 met the inclusion criteria. The most popular applications were found in medical imaging and electronic health records, especially in radiology and oncology. Through thematic analysis, four key ethical themes emerged: algorithmic fairness, which addresses differences between clients and attributes; privacy protection through formal guarantees and cryptographic techniques; governance models, which emphasize accountability, transparency, and stakeholder engagement; and equitable distribution of computing resources for institutions with limited resources. Considerable variation was observed in how fairness and privacy trade-offs were evaluated, and only a few studies reported real-world clinical deployment. Conclusions: FL has significant potential to promote ethical AI in healthcare, but advancement will require the development of common fairness standards, workable governance plans, and systems to guarantee fair benefit sharing. Future studies should develop standardized fairness metrics, implement multi-stakeholder governance frameworks, and prioritize real-world clinical validation beyond proof-of-concept implementations. Background/Objectives: HPV vaccination is safe, effective, and recommended at ages 11–12, yet uptake remains suboptimal. Serious video games may offer an innovative strategy to deliver brief, engaging education during clinic visits. This qualitative paper, embedded within a mixed-methods study, examined adolescents’, parents’, and healthcare providers’ (HCPs’) perceptions of the acceptability, usability, and perceived clinical applicability of HPV Detective, a tablet-based digital game designed to provide HPV-related education to parent–child dyads during pediatric clinic wait times. Methods: Eight adolescent–parent dyads (N = 16) and three HCPs from university-affiliated pediatric clinics participated in 30–60-min semi-structured Zoom interviews. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed by two coders, with discrepancies resolved by consensus and reviewed by a third researcher. Results: Participants identified five key dyadic themes and four HCP themes. Adolescents described the gameplay as intuitive and enjoyable, highlighting interactive challenges and realistic avatars. Parents valued the clarity of HPV information and noted that the game helped initiate health-related conversations. Both adolescents and parents suggested enhancements including voice narration and greater customization and agreed that the game was well suited for 10–15-min clinic wait times, with text messaging preferred for follow-up. HCPs emphasized challenges such as parental hesitancy and competing clinical demands and viewed the game as a feasible adjunct to support vaccine-related discussions. Conclusions: Findings suggest the acceptability, usability, and perceived clinical applicability of a brief, clinic-based digital game for HPV-related education and engagement among adolescents and their parents. In the last decade, the interdisciplinary field of neuroarchitecture has grown significantly, revealing measurable links between architectural features and human neural processing. This review synthesizes current research at the nexus of neuroscience and architecture, with a focus on how emerging virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are being utilized to understand and enhance human spatial experience. We systematically reviewed literature from 2015 to 2025, identifying key empirical studies and categorizing advances into three themes: core components of neuroarchitectural research; the use of physiological sensors (e.g., EEG, heart rate variability) and virtual reality to gather data on occupant responses; and the integration of neuroscience with AI-driven analysis. Findings indicate that built environment elements (e.g., geometry, curvature, lighting) influence brain activity in regions governing emotion, stress, and cognition. VR-based experiments combined with neuroimaging and physiological measures enable ecologically valid, fine-grained analysis of these effects, while AI techniques facilitate real-time emotion recognition and large-scale pattern discovery, bridging design features with occupant emotional responses. However, the current evidence base remains nascent, limited by small, homogeneous samples and fragmented data. We propose a four-domain framework (somatic, psychological, emotional, cognitive-“SPEC”) to guide future research. By consolidating methodological advances in VR experimentation, physiological sensing, and AI-based analytics, this review provides an integrative roadmap for replicable and scalable neuroarchitectural studies. Intensified interdisciplinary efforts leveraging AI and VR are needed to build robust, diverse datasets and develop neuro-informed design tools. Such progress will pave the way for evidence-based design practices that promote human well-being and cognitive health in built environments. Full article

Spirituality and religion are underrecognized components of mental health and substance use (MHSU) care for youth of African descent. This study explores the dual role of spirituality and religion in influencing the help-seeking behaviors, recovery journeys, and care outcomes of youth of African descent aged 18 to 25 residing in Nova Scotia, Canada. Drawing on findings from a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded community-based study using mixed methods, including interviews, focus groups, and arts-based approaches, the research highlights both the supportive and ambivalent roles spirituality plays in MHSU care. Participants shared themes such as spiritual reflection as a turning point, the assurance of a higher power, the culturally responsive support of faith-informed providers, and the significance of meditation and unseen connection as healing tools. While the narratives of research participants attested to the role of spiritual and religious practices in offering a sense of belonging, hope, and culturally aligned care, they may also reinforce stigma or act as a barrier to accessing formal MHSU services. These themes were derived from qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with 60 youth participants. Through the lens of Ubuntu and Afrocentric paradigms, this paper calls for a more holistic and culturally inclusive approach to care, one that respects or honors the spiritual and communal lives of youth of African descent. It also reinforces the importance of training MHSU care providers to recognize, respect, and integrate spirituality as a legitimate component of wellness and recovery for help-seeking youth of African descent. Language delay is a fairly frequent phenomenon in young children, with associated negative outcomes across the academic, social, and emotional areas of their lives. This qualitative study was designed to deeply examine mothers’ experiences and the ways in which they promote the development of their children with language delay. Twenty mothers of children with language delay (aged four to nine), who were recruited through advertisements posted by language preschool/school teachers, participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed themes relating to the challenges of raising a child with language delay, along with how mothers create a safe emotional environment for their child’s development, find opportunities and encourage social interactions, utilize their day-to-day routines to promote language and learning, and actively engage with their children’s educational framework. These results highlight how mothers serve as the “architects” of their children’s development. Despite the difficulties they encounter, such as high stress levels, mental health challenges, isolation, and guilt, and the far-reaching implications of their children’s language delay on their day-to-day living, mothers shape the home environment to promote their children’s academic, social, and emotional development. The study thus indicates that mothers intuitively promote their children’s development and that practitioners and others can support mothers’ own initiatives along with providing guidance.
