The Use of Multimedia in the Teaching and Learning Process of Higher Education: A Systematic Review

The integration of multimedia technologies is transforming teaching and learning in higher education, offering innovative ways to improve student engagement and learning outcomes. Although numerous studies investigate the impact of multimedia, there is still a clear need for a synthesis that brings together the latest evidence from a variety of disciplines and contexts. To address this need, this systematic review aims to summarize the empirical evidence and provide a clearer understanding of how multimedia is applied in higher education, to outline how educators can effectively design and the implications for curriculum design. This article focuses on three key research questions: (1) How does the integration of multimedia in higher education classrooms influence student engagement and learning outcomes? (2) How does the use of multimedia affect the development of specific skills? (3) What are the challenges and opportunities to integrate multimedia technologies into higher education? Relevant studies were systematically retrieved and screened from major academic databases, including ScienceDirect, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, Wiley Online Library, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar. In total, 48 studies were selected from these sources for detailed analysis. The findings showed that multimedia tools enhance student engagement, motivation, and performance when integrated with clear pedagogical strategies. In addition, multimedia helps to develop skills such as creativity, digital literacy, and independent learning. However, challenges such as technical limitations, uneven infrastructure, and the need for ongoing teacher training remain significant difficulties in fully exploiting the benefits in higher education. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated institutional support, investment in professional development, and careful alignment of multimedia tools with pedagogical goals. Full article

School textbooks are central to the teaching, studying, and learning processes because they mediate the interaction between the prescribed curriculum and the educational experience in the classroom. Evaluating their didactic structure critically allows us to determine the degree to which they align with current curriculum guidelines and promote meaningful learning. This study aimed to analyze the extent to which Ecuadorian natural science textbooks reflect constructivist learning principles and promote the development of key competencies established in the National Priority Curriculum. This curriculum guides the achievement of essential results and strengthens fundamental competencies for students’ comprehensive development. Content analysis was adopted as the methodological approach given its relevance in examining the didactic and curricular dimensions of educational materials. The analysis covered twelve eighth-grade General Basic Education textbooks and their supplementary materials. The analysis was based on two instruments: specialized summary analysis sheets (RAE) and a purpose-built checklist. The ATLAS.ti 25 and IRaMuTeQ programs supported the systematization and visualization of the data. The results showed limited integration of constructivist strategies, such as teaching for comprehension, inquiry-based learning, and problem solving, in most of the analyzed texts. These findings underscore the need to expand and strengthen the incorporation of contextualized, critical, and meaningful learning experiences to improve the didactic design of school textbooks. Such improvements would promote coherent articulation between objectives, content, methods, resources, and assessment in line with constructivist principles of the Ecuadorian curriculum. Furthermore, given these approaches’ affinity with curricular frameworks in other regional countries, the results could offer relevant guidance and starting points for reflection on developing and using textbooks in Latin American contexts with comparable educational characteristics. This study evaluates the impact of using group concept maps in the teaching of Applied Thermodynamics in the Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Electronics and Automation Engineering. The methodology consisted of selecting topics with a high conceptual load, collaboratively creating concept maps, and subsequently evaluating them by both students and teaching staff. Students achieved average scores above 7/10 in the concept map activity, with teacher and student evaluations averaging 7.8 and 7.3, respectively. Knowledge assessment via pre- and post-tests revealed a 20% increase in concept comprehension. For example, in the topic of Principles of Thermodynamics, the percentage of correct answers on the most complex question increased from 13% in the Pre-Test to 40% in the post-test. In the topic of Refrigeration Cycles, some questions showed an improvement from 18% to 25%. The students’ perception of the activity was positive, with an average satisfaction rating of 6.9 out of 10. Furthermore, most students acknowledged that the activity helped them stay engaged with the subject matter and identify errors in their own learning. The high participation in the activity, despite its low impact on the final grade, demonstrates the students’ strong motivation for this study approach. Therefore, the implementation of concept maps not only facilitated the understanding of key concepts but also promoted critical reflection and collaborative learning, establishing itself as an effective strategy in the teaching of Applied Thermodynamics. Caregiver Self-Regulation as a Key Factor in the Implementation Potential of Caregiver-Mediated Interventions

Caregiver self-regulation may be a critical component of caregivers’ effective delivery of caregiver-mediated interventions (CMIs). CMIs are a highly evidence-based group of interventions that target a broad range of challenges, including social communication, emotion regulation, and externalizing behaviors, for autistic and neurotypical children. CMIs teach caregivers to be “coaches” to help their children learn and practice skills in daily life. However, being a good “coach” likely requires caregivers to optimally self-regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors when working with their children in moments that are often emotionally heightened. Caregiver self-regulation is a set of skills that promote parenting autonomy and confidence: self-sufficiency, self-efficacy, self-management, personal agency, and problem solving. This conceptual paper will briefly discuss the literature on the role of caregiver self-regulation in CMIs and argue that future implementation research on CMIs should measure caregiver self-regulation because, in line with recent expansion of the theory of planned behavior, caregiver self-regulation may predict more effective implementation of CMIs. We also argue, in line with CFIR 2.0, that supporting caregiver self-regulation could ultimately improve the implementation of CMIs with regard to each implementation outcome in the Implementation Outcomes Framework. For example, enhancing caregiver self-regulation may improve CMI appropriateness (by increasing alignment with each caregiver’s values and culture), adoption (by increasing engagement to finish the full CMI protocol), and even CMI sustainability (by increasing caregivers’ ability to problem-solve and generalize to new child challenges independently, freeing up provider time to work with new caregivers and allowing the agency to provide the CMI for a reduced relative cost). Should future research demonstrate that caregiver self-regulation is an implementation determinant, future implementation strategies may need to include support for caregiver self-regulation, because it may explain or enhance the implementation of CMIs across early intervention and community mental health systems. The aim of this article is to identify the effectiveness of a teacher education program based on student perceptions. In this aim, a longitudinal research project was carried out with a sample of 14,229 students at a Spanish university who evaluated their teachers (using a Likert-type scale) after they completed a teacher training program. The CEDA teacher evaluation scale (α = 0.968; ω = 0.968) was used to assess students’ perceptions of the instructor’s role as a facilitator of learning. Complementary qualitative information was also collected, which complemented the quantitative findings. The first conclusion is the positive impact of key variables of the teacher training program: the pedagogical model, educational innovation, and evaluation strategies. Secondly, the students’ perception was slightly better in relation to the pedagogical model, followed by evaluation strategies and finally educational innovation. Thirdly, although students generally rated the teaching of technical subjects more highly than the humanities, the perception of change linked to teacher training was positive for all subjects. Finally, there was a slight difference in students’ perceptions according to the academic course (second, third, or fourth). All of the above should be considered for future teacher training programs. Full article

Following the significant disruption of traditional teaching by the COVID-19 pandemic, gamified education—an approach integrating technology and cognitive strategies—has gained widespread attention and use among educators and learners. This study explores how game-based learning, supported by situated learning theory and game design elements, can boost learner motivation and knowledge construction. Using 20,293 user comments from the Chinese video platform Bilibili, the study applies sentiment analysis and LDA to uncover users’ sentimental tendencies and cognitive themes. The analysis identifies four core themes: (1) The application of contextual strategies in language learning, (2) Autonomous exploration and active participation in gamified learning, (3) Progressive enhancement of logical thinking in gamified environments, and (4) Teaching innovation in promoting knowledge construction and deepening. Building on these findings, the study further develops a cognitive scaffolding model integrating “contextualization–procedural logic–active construction” to explain the mechanisms of motivation–cognition interaction in gamified learning. Methodologically, this study innovatively combines LDA topic modeling with sentiment analysis, offering a new approach for multidimensional measurement of learner attitudes in gamified education. Theoretically, it extends the application of situated learning theory to digital education, providing systematic support for instructional design and meaning-making. Findings enrich empirical research on gamified learning and offer practical insights for optimizing educational platforms and personalized learning support. Full article

Open Educational Resources (OER) are increasingly recognized as key tools for promoting quality, inclusive, and equitable education. Their ease of access and the possibility of free adaptation to different contexts contribute to continuous improvement in teaching and learning. Drawing on data collected from teachers and students, this study looks at teachers’ perceptions of OER, how they influence collaboration and educational practices, and the impact of OER on students’ learning and motivation. The findings reveal both enabling and constraining factors and highlight how OER foster teacher collaboration and self-reflection on pedagogical practices. Moreover, the use of OER is associated with active and constructive teaching approaches, positively influencing student engagement. These results are triangulated with data from Likert-scale responses, indicating that students who engage with OER demonstrate significantly higher levels of motivation and deep learning compared to those who do not. Based on these findings, the study recommends implementing strategies to encourage broader integration of OER in classroom settings, alongside ongoing professional development to address existing barriers. In this context, institutional support and community-building initiatives emerge as critical levers to scale the adoption of OER. Finally, the importance of further investigation is emphasized to explore long-term impacts on teaching practices and student outcomes across diverse educational settings Full article

This qualitative descriptive case study explored the perceptions of six general education and six special education teachers regarding their joint participation in professional learning communities (PLCs) in a rural district in Texas. Through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, two major categories emerged: (1) the differentiated roles of special education teachers within PLCs and (2) the collaborative construction of pedagogical strategies based on interdisciplinary teamwork. Both of the teacher groups described the contributions of their counterparts as integral to their teaching effectiveness and spoke of the need for protected time for PLC team meetings and the inclusion of special education teachers in PLCs. Although existing literature acknowledges the importance of PLCs, few studies critically examined how special education teachers contribute to shared planning and pedagogical decision-making alongside their general education colleagues. The findings suggest that inclusive PLCs can become collaborative ecosystems that redefine teacher education and innovation in diverse educational contexts. Full article

Background/Objectives: During the past decade, incorporating innovative teaching strategies for active learning, such as the use of escape rooms (ERs), has effectively contributed to the acquisition of the necessary skills. This study aimed to assess students’ opinions, engagement, and gameful experience, and to analyse the impact of engagement and gameful experience on students’ opinions about ER activity. Methods: This descriptive-analytical, quantitative, and interventional cross-sectional study was conducted among first-year nursing students enrolled in the Nursing Fundamentals course. The ER activities took place in a faculty classroom. The measure included a questionnaire for assessing students’ opinions about ER activity, engagement while learning through play, and the Gameful Experience Scale. Results: The students reported very positive opinions on the outcomes of escape room activities. According to the students’ perception, solving puzzles required a high level of cognitive, emotional, physical, and other engagement. The experience of learning through play contributed to their increased enjoyment, absorption, and creative thinking, with a low level of negative effects and dominance. Enjoyment, immersion, and creative thinking during the gameful experience explained 49.0% of the variance in students’ opinions on ER activity. Conclusions: ER enabled students to consolidate knowledge from various fields within one lesson, encouraging them to be highly engaged and think creatively, giving them a sense of enjoyment in learning and motivation for further learning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, university teaching staff were compelled to urgently transform their pedagogical practices, rapidly adopting new methodologies and technological tools. This abrupt shift in higher education demands critical reflection on the past, present, and future of academic institutions. Based on a qualitative approach, this research used case studies and discussion groups to conduct a comparative analysis of three public Spanish universities: the University of La Laguna (ULL), the University of Extremadura (UEx), and the University of Valladolid (UVa). The aim was to understand how the university community experienced the transition from a traditional educational model to digital or hybrid modalities during and after the period of emergency remote teaching. The three institutions quickly implemented online strategies and subsequently moved to hybrid formats. Despite initial difficulties, there was a clear increase in the use of digital technologies and virtual environments. However, the research also revealed differing perceptions regarding the depth and permanence of these educational changes. The findings enabled the formulation of recommendations to support the digital transformation of university degree programmes, highlighting the importance of institutional policies focused on faculty training, equitable access to technological resources, and strong engagement in the provision of hybrid or fully online learning options. Background/Objectives: Childhood trauma significantly hinders the developmental and academic outcomes of learners, particularly in under-resourced schools such as those in Limpopo province, South Africa. Teachers in these settings often face challenges in supporting trauma-exposed learners due to a lack of knowledge, training, and appropriate resources. Addressing this gap requires the development of structured, trauma-informed educational support systems. Methods: This study forms the final phase of a multi-phase research project aimed at developing a trauma-informed curriculum for primary school teachers. A multi-phase mixed method design was adopted across four phases: (1) a global scoping review to identify effective trauma-informed interventions; (2) empirical interviews with primary school teachers, trauma center managers, clinical psychologists, and social workers to understand local needs and experiences; (3) development of a conceptual framework grounded in theoretical and empirical findings; and (4) curriculum development guided by El Sawi’s curriculum design model. The curriculum was validated using structured questionnaires with a panel of stakeholders including educators, mental health professionals, and curriculum experts. Results: The study identified critical issues, including teachers’ limited understanding of childhood trauma, lack of standardized training, and inadequate classroom strategies. Key curriculum components were developed to address these gaps, including modules on the nature of trauma, early identification of symptoms, trauma-informed teaching practices, and collaboration with mental health professionals. Validation results indicated strong agreement on the curriculum’s clarity, relevance, and potential impact. Conclusions: The developed trauma-informed curriculum provides primary school teachers in Limpopo with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to support trauma-exposed learners. It emphasizes early identification, responsive classroom strategies, and inter-professional collaboration. This curriculum has the potential to enhance learning environments and promote better educational and psychosocial outcomes for trauma-affected learners. Full article

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping higher education by enabling personalized learning (PL) and enhancing teaching and learning practices. To examine global research trends, pedagogical paradigms, equity and sustainability considerations, instructional strategies, learning outcomes, and interdisciplinary collaboration, this study systematically reviewed 29 articles indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) Q1, representing the top 25% of cited articles, published between January 2020 and December 2024 in the Web of Science database. Results indicate that AI-PL research is concentrated in Asia, particularly China, and predominantly situated within education and computer science. Quantitative designs prevail, often complemented by qualitative insights, with supervised machine learning as the most common algorithm. While constructivist principles implicitly guide most studies, explicit theoretical grounding improves AI-pedagogy alignment and educational outcomes. AI demonstrates potential to enhance instructional approaches such as PBL, STEAM, gamification, and UDL, and to foster higher-order skills, yet uncritical use may undermine learner autonomy. Systematic attention to equity and SDG-related objectives remains limited. Emerging interdisciplinary collaborations show promise but are not yet fully institutionalized, constraining integrative system design. These findings underscore the need for stronger theoretical framing, alignment of AI with pedagogical and societal imperatives, and professional development to enhance educators’ AI literacy. Coordinated efforts among academia, industry, and policymakers are essential to develop scalable, context-sensitive AI solutions that advance inclusive, adaptive, and transformative higher education. Climate literacy is pivotal for preparing future leaders to address global climate challenges and build a sustainable future. Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a central role in embedding sustainability principles, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 (Climate Action), into curricula to cultivate responsible leadership. This study examines the integration of SDG 13 within the business curriculum at Delta University (UAE), assessing undergraduate students’ perceptions of climate education and how teaching methods shape sustainability leadership. Using a mixed-methods approach—a closed-ended survey and Q-methodology—the research analyzes students’ awareness, engagement, and subjective perspectives on pedagogical strategies. The results reveal a disconnect between theoretical knowledge and students’ ability to apply these principles in real-world business contexts. While students acknowledged climate action’s importance and supported active learning pedagogies (e.g., case studies, simulations), skepticism persisted about SDG 13’s applicability to business operations. The findings highlight the need for curricular reforms, aligning curricula with national sustainability strategies (e.g., UAE Net Zero 2050) to bridge theory and practice. This research advocates for HEIs to prioritize climate competencies, ensuring that graduates can address environmental challenges through actionable frameworks. By transcending symbolic commitments, HEIs can empower students to lead regionally and globally, advancing sustainability education’s role in achieving equitable, low-carbon societies. Full article

Traditional lecture-based teaching often struggles to foster student engagement, active participation, and deep learning in large-class general education courses. As class sizes grow, students may become passive learners, limiting their ability to develop essential skills such as self-directed learning and teamwork. Innovative instructional strategies are needed to address these challenges and create a more interactive, student-centered learning environment. Team-Based Learning (TBL) has emerged as a practical pedagogical approach that promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and student accountability. This study investigates the influence of TBL on Self-Directed Learning (SDL) and Team Dynamics (TD) through a quasi-experimental design. One class was classified as the experimental group (TBL), while the other was classified as the control group (traditional lecture-based teaching). Data were analyzed using independent-samples one-way ANCOVA and the Johnson–Neyman method to examine the impacts of TBL on SDL and TD. The results indicate that the experimental group adopting TBL outperformed the control group in both SDL and TD. The ANCOVA results revealed that TBL had a significant positive impact on the self-monitoring factor of SDL after controlling for pre-test scores. Furthermore, the Johnson–Neyman analysis demonstrated that the effect of TBL varied across different pre-test levels, suggesting that the influence of TBL on SDL and TD was more pronounced under certain conditions. Overall, this study supports the effectiveness of TBL as a pedagogical strategy in large-class general education courses, highlighting its potential to enhance students’ SDL and TD. These findings provide valuable insights for future teaching practices and curriculum design, emphasizing the need for more interactive, student-centered learning approaches in higher education. This study analyzes the effects of an educational pill strategy in a nursing anatomy course on academic performance, grade redistribution versus a control group, and student satisfaction, acknowledging that digital teaching innovations in higher education may not benefit all students equally. A learning pill strategy was implemented in a first-year nursing anatomy course. A pre–post quasi-experimental design assessed academic performance, while video usage and student satisfaction were analyzed using an ad hoc questionnaire. In the control group, 44.1% and 40.8% of students failed the first and second exams, respectively. In the intervention group, these percentages were 42.9% and 28.9%. While mean scores showed no significant differences in the control group, the intervention group improved significantly on the second exam (p < 0.001). Grade distribution differed between groups (χ2 = 8.635; p < 0.05), with fewer students scoring below 4 and more scoring between 6 and 8. Satisfaction analysis revealed three factors: usefulness/self-efficacy, motivation/learning, and structure/accessibility, with motivation (Factor 2) significantly associated with greater strategy use. Initial group heterogeneity influences how students use and benefit from teaching resources. These findings suggest that integrating educational pills into teaching practices may enhance conceptual understanding and increase student motivation. Full article
