Efficient planning of train crew rosters is a key factor in ensuring operational reliability and promoting long-term sustainability in railway transport, both economically and socially. This article presents a systematic approach to developing a crew rostering model in passenger rail transport, with a focus on the operational setting of the train crew depot in Česká Třebová, a city in the Czech Republic. The seven-step methodology includes identifying available train shifts, defining scheduling constraints, creating roster variants, and calculating personnel and time requirements for each option. The proposed roster reduced staffing needs by two employees, increased the average shift duration to 9 h and 42 min, and decreased non-productive time by 384 h annually. These improvements enhance sustainability by optimizing human resource use, lowering unnecessary energy consumption, and improving employees’ work–life balance. The model also provides a quantitative assessment of operational feasibility and economic efficiency. Compared to existing rosters, the proposed model offers clear advantages and remains applicable even in settings with limited technological support. The findings show that a well-designed rostering system can contribute not only to cost savings and personnel stabilization, but also to broader objectives in sustainable public transport, supporting resilient and resource-efficient rail operations. The composite materials industry is increasingly seeking sustainable alternatives to mitigate the environmental impact of end-of-life materials. As a result, many sectors are transitioning toward bio-based or partially bio-based matrices (e.g., epoxy resins) to preserve material properties while improving sustainability. The transportation sector, in particular, demands materials that meet stringent mechanical and fire resistance standards. In this study, various epoxy systems with bio-based and/or recyclable content were investigated, along with renewable additives designed to enhance fire resistance through their functional groups and chemical structure. The research focused on developing formulations compatible with Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) technology, which is widely used in transportation applications. Through extensive testing, materials with high bio-based content were successfully developed, exhibiting competitive mechanical properties and compliance with key fire safety requirements of the railway sector, as per the EN 45545-2 standard. It is well known that there is a significant conflict of interest between high-speed rail (HSR) operators and logistics companies. This study proposes an HSR freight pricing strategy based on a multi-objective optimization framework and a freight mode splitting model based on the Logit model. A utility function was constructed to quantify the comprehensive utility of different modes of transportation by integrating five key influencing factors: economy, speed, convenience, stability, and environmental sustainability. A bi-objective optimization model was developed to balance the cost of the logistics with the benefits of high-speed rail operators to achieve a win–win situation. The model is solved by the TOPSIS method, and its effectiveness is verified by the freight case of the Zhengzhou–Chongqing high-speed railway in China. The results of this study showed that (1) HSR has advantages in medium-distance freight transportation; (2) increasing government subsidies can help improve the market competitiveness of high-speed rail in freight transportation. This research provides theoretical foundations and methodological support for optimizing HSR freight pricing mechanisms and improving multimodal transport efficiency. Full article

High-speed railway (HSR) is a key transport mode for achieving carbon reduction targets and promoting sustainable regional economic development due to its fast, efficient, and low-carbon nature. Accurate wind speed forecasting (WSF) is vital for HSR systems, as it provides future wind conditions that are critical for ensuring safe train operations. Numerous WSF schemes based on deep learning have been proposed. However, accurately forecasting strong wind events remains challenging due to the complex and dynamic nature of wind. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid network architecture, MHSETCN-LSTM, for forecasting strong wind. The MHSETCN-LSTM integrates temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) to capture both short-term fluctuations and long-term trends in wind behavior. The multi-head squeeze-and-excitation (MHSE) attention mechanism dynamically recalibrates the importance of different aspects of the input sequence, allowing the model to focus on critical time steps, particularly when abrupt wind events occur. In addition to wind speed, we introduce wind direction (WD) to characterize wind behavior due to its impact on the aerodynamic forces acting on trains. To maintain the periodicity of WD, we employ a triangular transform to predict the sine and cosine values of WD, improving the reliability of predictions. Massive experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method based on real-world wind data collected from sensors along the Beijing–Baotou railway. Experimental results demonstrated that our model outperforms state-of-the-art solutions for WSF, achieving a mean-squared error (MSE) of 0.0393, a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 0.1982, and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 99.59%. These experimental results validate the efficacy of our proposed model in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of railway infrastructure.Furthermore, the model can be utilized in other wind-sensitive sectors, such as highways, ports, and offshore wind operations. This will further promote the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 9. Full article

Urban public transport represents a fundamental pillar of a sustainable transport system and a key subsystem within the broader mobility framework in urban environments. This paper focuses on the analysis and optimization of the public transport system in the city of Prievidza and the nearby town of Bojnice in Slovakia, which currently face challenges such as low system attractiveness, operational inefficiency, and weak integration with regional railway transport. This study presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of existing public transport services in Prievidza and Bojnice, including an assessment of passenger flows, line network structure, transfer connections, and operational parameters. Based on the identified deficiencies, a new urban public transport network system is proposed, emphasizing direct links to the railway network. This methodology is developed in the context of an integrated timed-transfer timetable, with defined system time slots at the main transfer hub and a newly designed line network with standardized paths and regular intervals. The proposed system ensures significantly improved connectivity between urban transport and rail services, reduces deadhead kilometres, lowers the number of required vehicles, and leads to a reduction in operational costs by up to 20%. The resulting model serves as a transferable example of efficient service planning in medium-sized cities, with a focus on functional integration, operational efficiency, and sustainable urban development. This study investigates the influence of moisture on the mechanical behavior of fine soil mixtures from the São Luís region, applied as subballast layers in railway track structures. Two samples were analyzed: a non-lateritic sandy soil (NA’, AM03) and a lateritic clayey soil (LG’, AM09). The research included physical and chemical characterization tests, as well as repeated load triaxial tests to determine the resilient modulus and shakedown limits, complemented by numerical simulations using the SysTrain 2.0 software. The samples showed average resilient modulus values of 577 MPa and 638 MPa, respectively. Tests were conducted under optimum moisture content and under moisture 1% above the optimum, induced by capillary rise in compacted samples. The results indicated that under 1% above optimum moisture, the shakedown limits were reduced by up to 50% for AM03 and 25% for AM09, demonstrating greater stability for the lateritic soil. In addition, it was observed that as stress ratios increased, the shakedown limits for both moisture conditions tended to converge. Numerical simulations confirmed the adverse influence of increased moisture on the occurrence of shakedown in both samples. For AM03, the simulations revealed progressive failure under elevated moisture, indicating a more severe stress redistribution within the subballast layer. In contrast, AM09 remained within the shakedown regime under both conditions, although it exhibited higher values of S1/S1max under moisture above optimum, suggesting a greater tendency toward plastic creep. These findings highlight the critical importance of moisture control for the sustainable performance of railway substructures. This study contributes to understanding environmental vulnerability in transportation infrastructure and supports the development of more resilient and sustainable railway systems. Full article

Multimodal transport refers to the integrated transportation in a logistics system in the form of multiple transportation modes, such as highway, railway, waterway, etc. In recent years, the deep integration of electric trucks and route optimization has significantly improved the cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency of multimodal transportation. It has provided strong support for the sustainable development of the logistics system. Based on whether to consider low-carbon requirements, uncertainty, and special cargo transportation, the literature is divided into five areas: traditional multimodal transport path optimization, multimodal transport path optimization considering low-carbon requirements, multimodal transport path optimization considering uncertainty, multimodal transport path optimization considering low-carbon requirements and uncertainty, and multimodal transport path optimization considering special transport needs. In this paper, we searched the literature on multimodal path optimization after 2016 in WOS (Web of Science) and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), and found that the number of publications in 2024 is three times that in 2016. We collected 130 relevant studies to summarize the current state of research. Finally, with the development of multimodal transport to collaborative transport and the improvement of the application of in-depth learning in different fields, the research mainly focuses on two future research directions: collaborative transport and the use of in-depth learning to solve uncertain problems, and combining it with the problem of multimodal transport route optimization to explore more efficient and perfect transport solutions. This study focuses on the systematic conservation of historical architectural heritage in Heilongjiang Province, particularly addressing the challenges of point-based protection and spatial fragmentation. It explores the construction of a connected and conductive heritage corridor network, using historical building clusters across the province as empirical cases. A comprehensive analytical framework is established by integrating the nearest neighbor index, kernel density estimation, minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model, entropy weighting, circuit theory, and network structure metrics. Kernel density analysis reveals a distinct spatial aggregation pattern, characterized by “one core, multiple zones.” Seven resistance factors—including elevation, slope, land use, road networks, and service accessibility—are constructed, with weights assigned through an entropy-based method to generate an integrated resistance surface and suitability map. Circuit theory is employed to simulate cultural “current” flows, identifying 401 potential corridors at the provincial, municipal, and district levels. A hierarchical station system is further developed based on current density, forming a coordinated structure of primary trunks, secondary branches, and complementary nodes. The corridor network’s connectivity is evaluated using graph-theoretic indices (α, β, and γ), which indicate high levels of closure, structural complexity, and accessibility. The results yield the following key findings: (1) Historical architectural resources in Heilongjiang demonstrate significant coupling with the Chinese Eastern Railway and multi-ethnic cultural corridors, forming a “one horizontal, three vertical” spatial configuration. The horizontal axis (Qiqihar–Harbin–Mudanjiang) aligns with the core cultural route of the railway, while the three vertical axes (Qiqihar–Heihe, Harbin–Heihe, and Mudanjiang–Luobei) correspond to ethnic cultural pathways. This forms a framework of “railway as backbone, ethnicity as wings.” (2) Comparative analysis of corridor paths, railways, and highways reveals structural mismatches in certain regions, including absent high-speed connections along northern trunk lines, insufficient feeder lines in secondary corridors, sparse terminal links, and missing ecological stations near regional boundaries. To address these gaps, a three-tier transportation coordination strategy is recommended: it comprises provincial corridors linked to high-speed rail, municipal corridors aligned with conventional rail, and district corridors connected via highway systems. Key enhancement zones include Yichun–Heihe, Youyi–Hulin, and Hegang–Wuying, where targeted infrastructure upgrades and integrated station hubs are proposed. Based on these findings, this study proposes a comprehensive governance paradigm for heritage corridors that balances multi-level coordination (provincial–municipal–district) with ecological planning. A closed-loop strategy of “identification–analysis–optimization” is developed, featuring tiered collaboration, cultural–ecological synergy, and multi-agent dynamic evaluation. The framework provides a replicable methodology for integrated protection and spatial sustainability of historical architecture in Heilongjiang and other cold-region contexts. Full article

The digital transformation of the railway industry is necessary for addressing growing challenges and advancing its sustainable development. Digital technologies include Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Remote Train Control (RTC), which offer opportunities to potentially optimize operations and enhance safety. Both technologies, however, could pose significant challenges that need to be addressed in order to capture the anticipated benefits in an urban public street environment. This study thus bridges the gap between theory and practice by exploring the projected benefits and challenges of implementing RTC and ATO through a case study of a European public transport operator deploying these technologies in tramway operations. Employing a case study methodology, the research draws on 44 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from the operator and its supplier. The findings highlight significant anticipated benefits, including increased productivity, improved safety, and enhanced sustainability. Yet, prospective challenges such as regulatory hurdles, technical complexities, and organizational changes pose barriers to implementation. Key obstacles include ensuring robust connectivity, addressing cybersecurity concerns, and managing workforce transitions. This study underscores the importance of collaborative approaches, stakeholder engagement, and incremental deployment to mitigate risks and maximize the impact of automation technologies. By providing actionable insights into the practical adoption of RTC and ATO, this research supports the development of advanced urban transport systems. Full article

Amid intensified global climate mitigation efforts, integrating rail freight into carbon emissions trading schemes became critical under China’s “Dual-Carbon” strategy. Despite rail’s significantly lower emissions intensity compared to road transport, existing pricing frameworks inadequately internalized its environmental externalities, which limited its competitive advantage. To address this gap, this study systematically reviewed international and domestic practices of integrating transport into carbon trading systems and developed a novel “four-layer, three-dimensional” emissions trading scheme (ETS) framework tailored specifically for China’s rail freight sector. Employing a Stackelberg bilevel optimization model, this study analyzed how carbon quotas and pricing influenced rail operators’ pricing and investment decisions. The results showed that under optimized quotas and carbon prices, railway enterprises were able to generate surplus carbon credits, creating new revenue streams and enabling freight rate reductions. This “carbon revenue–freight rate feedback loop” not only delivered environmental benefits but also enhanced rail’s economic competitiveness. Overall, this study significantly advances the understanding of carbon-based pricing mechanisms in railway freight, providing robust theoretical insights and actionable policy guidance for achieving sustainable decarbonization in China’s transport sector. The optimisation of airport infrastructure capacities lacks adequate tools that would enable airport owners and managers to make strategic decisions related to sustainable development and strengthening multimodal connectivity. Assessing the sustainability of the transport system is one of the important issues in creating transport policies worldwide. In this research, the methodology of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) was used, which can be applied to decision making and the evaluation of transport projects, considering more than one criterion in the selection process. The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) method is one of the new MCDM methods. The SWARA method will assess the weights of the selected main criteria and sub-criteria for the multimodal connection of airports to the railway transport infrastructure. In this method, the expert plays an important role in the evaluation and calculation of the criteria weights. This research also aims to respond to the need to define a framework for objective and transparent decision-making based on the assessment of the weighting factors of the selected main criteria and sub-criteria. To assess the justification for the choice of railway transport for connecting airports, financial, traffic, environmental, and availability criteria were used. Full article

The sea–rail intermodal container terminal serves as a key transportation hub for green logistics, where efficient resource coordination directly enhances multimodal connectivity and operational synergy. To address limited storage capacity and trans-shipment inefficiencies, this study innovatively proposes a resource-sharing strategy between the seaport and the railway container terminal, focusing on the joint allocation of yard space and internal trucks. For indirect trans-shipment operations between ships, the port, the railway container terminal, and trains, a mixed-integer programming model is formulated with the objective of minimizing the container trans-shipment cost and the weighted turnaround time of ships and trains. This model simultaneously determines yard allocation, container transfers, and truck allocation. A two-layer hybrid heuristic algorithm incorporating adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization and Greedy Rules is designed. Numerical experiments verify the model and algorithm performance, revealing that the proposed method achieves an optimality gap of only 1.82% compared to CPLEX in small-scale instances while outperforming benchmark algorithms in solution quality. And the shared yard strategy enhances ship and train turnaround efficiency by an average of 33.45% over traditional storage form. Sensitivity analysis considering multiple realistic factors further confirms the robustness and generalizability. This study provides a theoretical foundation for sustainable port–railway collaboration development. Full article

Nowadays, it is essential to contribute to sustainable transport to the maximum extent possible. Therefore, a significant emphasis is placed on environmentally friendly modes of transport, especially railway transport. For this reason, it is very important to ensure sufficient capacity of the railway infrastructure and high-quality railway transport operations. Railway transport control, operation, and management bring several specifications and unique features. One of the most important things is to correctly determine the capacity and throughput of the railway infrastructure because it must be clear how many trains can be operated on a concrete railway line for a certain time. Therefore, the issue of railway infrastructure capacity is a relatively broad and complex topic. Currently, there are several methods and ways to determine it. However, for scientific progress and research in this field, it is necessary to look for new scientific and professional solutions to the mentioned issue with effective implementation into practice. The mentioned contribution deals with new modern progressive methods of determining the capacity of the railway line using simulations and software applications. The main objective is to establish a methodology, specifically a heuristic procedure, in which specific partial steps of a new method of determining the capacity of railway infrastructure are defined. Subsequently, this new way of determining it is directly applied and explained on the specific railway line Bratislava–Komárno, which is located in southwestern Slovakia. The first part of the paper contains a theoretical framework and a brief explanation of the issue, including current used methods, as well as current scientific and professional manuscripts and papers that deal with this topic. Subsequently, the mentioned railway line is described, including the current operational problems arising on it due to insufficient current capacity. As part of the results, the proposal part is presented, including a universal heuristic procedure, which includes partial steps of the new methodology with application to the mentioned railway line. The discussions present its theoretical and practical benefits and topics for the further development of this issue. However, the most significant benefit will be the more effective identification of bottlenecks in railway operations, which will improve its smoothness and will have a significant impact on sustainable development and its aspects in the field of transport. With the high-density operations of high-speed trains, predicting the health status of core components such as traction motors is crucial for enhancing the safety and sustainability of trains. Currently, traditional maintenance mechanisms such as periodic inspections and fixed-threshold alarm systems are hindered by delayed abnormality detection and inadequate real-time responsiveness. This paper proposes a dynamic prediction method for traction motor states based on an Online Gated Recurrent Unit (OGRU), which considers various influencing factors and updates model parameters in real-time. Experimental results demonstrate that the online prediction model significantly reduces the RMSE compared to offline methods and exhibits increased prediction stability under different conditions and step sizes. Notably, it decreases computational time by 23.3% relative to the Online Long Short-Term Memory (OLSTM) approach. The proposed method enhances preventive maintenance strategies, optimizes resource utilization, extends equipment lifespan, and reduces costs, thereby making a substantial contribution to the sustainable operation of high-speed railways. By improving energy efficiency, safety, and economic viability, this approach supports a transition toward greener rail transportation. Based on this study, the developed method can facilitate real-time maintenance decision-making, enabling the intelligent operation and maintenance of high-speed trains. Full article

The scarcity of natural aggregates and the growing accumulation of waste materials have driven the demand for sustainable and circular economy solutions in transportation infrastructure, and this has led to the utilization of waste materials in transport infrastructure, such as recycled rubber. Although numerous laboratory experiments have been conducted on granular mixtures mixed with rubber, predicting the complex stress–strain behaviour of these mixtures mathematically and capturing the influence of rubber on the geotechnical properties of waste mixtures are imperative. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the constitutive models developed to predict the stress–strain behaviour, dilatancy, and shear strength of rubber-mixed waste materials, including sand–rubber, coal wash–steel furnace slag–rubber crumbs, and coal wash–rubber crumbs in various transport infrastructure applications under static loading. This paper also highlights the innovations and limitations of these existing constitutive models on rubber-mixed materials. It was found that existing constitutive models based on hyperbolic, hypoplastic, critical state, and bounding surface plasticity approaches can capture the behaviour of these materials under static loading conditions. However, further developments are required to incorporate the influence of the type and size of the rubber, particle breakage, and damping properties and also account for train-induced cyclic loading in models developed for railway substructures. This paper contributes to advancing future research aimed at deepening the fundamental understanding of rubber-mixed materials used in transportation infrastructure. Full article
