Condition Changes Before and After the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic in Adolescent Athletes and Development of a Non-Contact Medical Checkup Application

During the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, sports activities were restricted, raising concerns about their impact on the physical condition of adolescent athletes, which remained largely unquantified. This study was designed with two primary objectives: first, to precisely quantify and elucidate the differences in the physical condition of adolescent athletes before and after activity restrictions due to the pandemic; and second, to innovatively develop and validate a non-contact medical checkup application. Medical checks were conducted on 563 athletes designated for sports enhancement. Participants were junior high school students aged 13 to 15, and the sample consisted of 315 boys and 248 girls. Furthermore, we developed a smartphone application and compared self-checks using the application with in-person checks by orthopedic surgeons to determine the challenges associated with self-checks. Statistical tests were conducted to determine whether there were statistically significant differences in range of motion and flexibility parameters before and after the pandemic. Additionally, items with discrepancies between values self-entered by athletes using the smartphone application and values measured by specialists were detected, and application updates were performed. Student’s t-test was used for continuous variables, whereas the chi-square test was used for other variables. Following the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, athletes were stiffer than during the pre-pandemic period in terms of hip and shoulder joint rotation range of motion and heel–buttock distance. The dominant hip external rotation decreased from 53.8° to 46.8° (p = 0.0062); the non-dominant hip external rotation decreased from 53.5° to 48.0° (p = 0.0252); the dominant shoulder internal rotation decreased from 62.5° to 54.7° (p = 0.0042); external rotation decreased from 97.6° to 93.5° (p = 0.0282), and the heel–buttock distance increased from 4.0 cm to 10.4 cm (p < 0.0001). The heel–buttock distance and straight leg raising angle measurements differed between the self-check and face-to-face check. Although there are items that cannot be accurately evaluated by self-check, physical condition can be improved with less contact by first conducting a face-to-face evaluation under appropriate guidance and then conducting a self-check. These findings successfully address our primary objectives. Specifically, we demonstrated a significant decline in the physical condition of adolescent athletes following pandemic-related activity restrictions, thereby quantifying their impact. Furthermore, our developed non-contact medical checkup application proved to be a viable tool for monitoring physical condition with reduced contact, although careful consideration of measurable parameters is crucial. This study provides critical insights into the long-term effects of activity restrictions on young athletes and offers a practical solution for health monitoring during infectious disease outbreaks, highlighting the potential for hybrid checkup approaches. Though previous studies have demonstrated the protective benefits of sports participation against illicit drug use for a general population, how these findings apply to LGBTQ youth remains unknown. This study specifically looks at the relationship between sports participation and prescription drug misuse among sexual and gender minority youth. Using secondary data from the 2019 YRBS, we analyze associations among sports participation, sexual orientation, gender identity, and prescription drug misuse among a representative sample of U.S. high school students in Florida. Our results show that sexual and gender minority youth are at increased risk for prescription drug misuse compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Moreover, sports participation is associated with higher rates of prescription drug misuse among all students, and the nuances of these trends are discussed with particular attention paid to sexual and gender minority youth. These results challenge conventional wisdom about sports participation. Without the addition of new demographic survey questions and LGBTQ youth participation in the YRBS, common myths about sports might have persisted. Our findings point to the meaningful presence of LGBTQ youth in sports, call for research and programming on LGBTQ athletes’ unique needs regarding substance misuse risk, and encourage LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices within schools and sports programs in particular. In modern medical education, a robust understanding of statistics is essential for fostering critical thinking, informed clinical decision-making, and effective communication. This paper explores the synergistic value of early and continued statistical education for medical students and residents, particularly in relation to the expanding field of sports supplementation and its impact on athletic performance. Early exposure to statistical principles enhances students’ ability to interpret clinical research, avoid cognitive biases, and engage in evidence-based practice. Continued statistical learning throughout residency further refines these competencies, enabling more sophisticated analysis and application of emerging data. The paper also addresses key challenges in integrating statistics into medical curricula—such as limited curricular space, student disengagement, and resource constraints—and proposes solutions including interactive learning, case-based teaching, and the use of public datasets. A unique emphasis is placed on connecting statistical literacy to the interpretation of research in sports science, particularly regarding the efficacy, safety, and ethical considerations of sports supplements. By linking statistical education to a dynamic and relatable domain like sports performance, educators can not only enrich learning outcomes but also foster lasting interest and competence in quantitative reasoning. This study examines how medically disqualified NCAA Division I student-athletes experience the abrupt end of their athletic careers and how those experiences reflect broader cultural and psychological dynamics within college sport. Utilizing an interpretive phenomenology analysis, we explore if the experiences of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes, who become medically disqualified, can be conceptualized by researchers through the stages of the Kübler-Ross model addressing grief responses. Unlike the prior research criticizing the application of the model to injured athletes, we found ample support for the possible applicability of each emotional stage; however, our study findings also reveal that the staged transitions do not necessarily follow in sequential order, as suggested by Kübler-Ross. Thus, the model applies as a general framework of grief from loss, but not as a fixed set of grieving processes for elite student-athletes who become medically disqualified. We conclude with implications for NCAA policy, athlete mental health services, and the cultivation of exit cultures that prioritize human well-being over athletic productivity. Full article

Background: Pre-season training is pivotal for optimizing athletic performance in collegiate basketball, yet the effectiveness of such programs in improving body composition (BC) under NCAA-mandated hourly restrictions remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a four-week, NCAA Division II-compliant strength and conditioning (SC) program on BC in women’s basketball. Methods: Sixteen student athletes (20.6 ± 1.8 y; 173.9 ± 6.5 cm; 76.2 ± 20.2 kg) completed an eight-hour-per-week micro-cycle incorporating functional conditioning, Olympic-lift-centric resistance, and on-court skill development. Lean body mass (LBM) and body-fat percentage (BF%) were assessed using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance on Day 1 and Day 28. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the fixed effect of Time (Pre, Post), including random intercepts for each athlete and covariate adjustment for age and height (α = 0.05). Results The LBM significantly increased by 1.49 kg (β = +1.49 ± 0.23 kg, t = 6.52, p < 0.001; 95% CI [1.02, 1.96]; R2 semi-partial = 0.55), while BF% decreased by 1.27 percentage points (β = −1.27 ± 0.58%, t = −2.20, p = 0.044; 95% CI [−2.45, −0.08]; R2 = 0.24). Height positively predicted LBM (β = +1.02 kg/cm, p < 0.001), whereas age showed no association (p > 0.64). Conclusions: A time-constrained, NCAA-compliant SC program meaningfully enhances lean mass and moderately reduces adiposity in collegiate women’s basketball athletes. These findings advocate for structured, high-intensity, mixed-modality training to maximize physiological readiness within existing regulatory frameworks. Future research should validate these results in larger cohorts and integrate performance metrics to further elucidate functional outcomes. Full article

Collegiate student-athletes are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity (FI). Prevalence rates range from 9.9% to 65%, although research is limited among this population. Background/Objectives: The challenge of balancing academic and degree progression requirements with training and competition demands can increase the risk for FI among student-athletes. Furthermore, insufficient funds for food has been reported for student-athletes living both on campus and off campus. Methods: This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design and constructivist theoretical framework to explore the experiences of athletic trainers, sports dietitians/nutritionists, and other professionals working with student-athletes in identifying and addressing FI among student-athletes via a series of online focus groups. Results: Participants (n = 27, 12 public colleges) had ≥7 years of collegiate athletics work experience, and most had been in their current position for <3 years. Five approaches to FI screening emerged; specifically, no screening, screening varies by team/sport, informal screening, dietitian screening, and formal screening. Emerging social determinants of FI included financial challenges, competing priorities, cultural/societal impacts, limited life skills, and the food environment. All these factors precipitated on a systems level, including individual, team/athletic department, and university/societal tiers. Conclusions: Athletic department and university policies and budgetary decisions emerged as potential antagonists of food security among student-athletes. FI mitigation strategies for student-athletes must go beyond simply addressing individual factors. Obtainment of food security among collegiate student-athletes requires system changes at the team/athletic department and university tiers. Full article

Background/Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare muscular strength and neuromuscular activation characteristics between male gymnasts and physical education (PE) students during isometric shoulder extension and flexion tasks. Methods: Thirteen competitive male gymnasts (age: 19.59 ± 1.90 years; body mass: 66.54 ± 6.10 kg; height: 169.38 ± 6.28 cm; mean ± SD) and thirteen male physical education (PE) students (age: 20.96 ± 2.30 years; body mass: 74.00 ± 8.69 kg; height: 174.96 ± 4.93 cm) voluntarily participated in the study. Peak torque (PT), rate of torque development (RTD), RTD normalized to body mass (RTD/BM), and muscle activation assessed via surface electromyography (EMG), normalized to maximal EMG activity (EMG/EMGmax), were evaluated during bilateral isometric shoulder extension and flexion at a joint angle of 45°. Measurements were analyzed across the following time intervals: −50 to 0 ms (pre-tension), 0–30 ms, 0–50 ms, 0–100 ms, and 0–200 ms relative to contraction onset. Custom MATLAB R2024b scripts were used for data processing and visualization. One-way and two-way multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) were conducted to test for group differences. Results: Gymnasts exhibit higher values of PT, PT/BM, RTD, and RTD/BM particularly within the early contraction phases (i.e., 0–50 ms and 0–100 ms) compared to PE students (p < 0.05 to <0.001; η2 = 0.04–0.66). Additionally, EMG activity normalized to maximal activation (EMG/EMGmax) was significantly greater in gymnasts during both early and mid-to-late contraction phases (0–100 ms and 0–200 ms), (p < 0.05 to <0.001; η2 = 0.04–0.48). Conclusions: These findings highlight gymnasts’ superior explosive neuromuscular capacity. Metrics like RTD, RTD/BM, and EMG offer valuable insights into rapid force production and neural activation, supporting performance monitoring, training optimization, and injury prevention across both athletic and general populations. Objective: This study examined the effects of a short-duration plyometric training program during physical education on neuromuscular ballistic performance in youth. Methods: Thirty-two students were assigned to a control group (CG; n = 16; age: 16.76 ± 0.72 years; height: 1.66 ± 0.09 m; body mass: 61.38 ± 6.07 kg) or an experimental group (EG; n = 16; age: 16.56 ± 0.62 years; height: 1.69 ± 0.09 m; body mass: 61.90 ± 7.83 kg). Both groups completed pre- and post-intervention Countermovement Jump (CMJ) tests using force plates. Over a four-week period, the EG completed eight sessions. Both the EG and the CG participated in 40 min sessions incorporating speed games, directional changes, and agility exercises. Paired t-tests and Cohen’s d were used for analysis. Results: The EG showed significant improvements in jump height (p = 0.006, ES = 0.83), jump momentum (p = 0.008, ES = 0.80), and take-off velocity (p = 0.003, ES = 0.93), with a decrease in peak propulsive power (p = 0.01, ES = 0.77). In contrast, the CG exhibited declines in multiple metrics, including jump height, jump momentum, and take-off velocity. Conclusions: These findings suggest that integrating plyometric training into physical education classes can effectively enhance neuromuscular performance in youth. Implementing structured training protocols within school programs may optimize strength, power, and movement efficiency, benefiting long-term athletic development. Full article

Education leads to building successful careers. However, different groups of students have different studying preferences. Our target group are athletes, combining their education and sports training. The main objective is to provide recommendations for an effective education system for athletes, improving their chances of finding new careers after leaving sports. Such a system must include Big Data and utilise AI possibilities currently available that support athletes’ career planning and development in a meaningful way. The main objective is specified by the following partial objectives: identifying what types of Big Data to analyse in connection with the athletes’ education; revealing what AI tools to include in the athletes’ education for their better preparation for a career after sports; determining what knowledge of AI and Big Data athletes need to stay relevant once they enter the labour market. Our study combines secondary and primary data sources. The secondary data (used in the orientation analysis) include case studies on AI and Big Data connected to education. The primary data were collected via a survey performed on over 200 Slovak junior athletes. The results show directions for the sports policymakers and sports organisations’ managers willing to improve their athletes’ career prospects. Full article

Over the last two and a half decades, there has been a surge of research into adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs have been found to be a significant predictor of mental health outcomes in adulthood, and researchers have begun to explore the relationship between ACEs and mental health outcomes in athletes. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has directly compared the mental health of student-athletes to non-student-athletes in the context of exposure to ACEs. In the present study, we compared psychological outcomes observed in college students (123 student-athletes and 149 non-student-athletes) on two mental health variables—depressive symptoms and difficulties in emotion regulation—at one university in the U.S. Results indicated that exposure to ACEs had a significant effect on both depressive symptoms and difficulties in emotion regulation, while student-athlete status only had a significant effect on depressive symptoms. There was no significant interaction effect between exposure to ACEs and student-athlete status. This pattern of main effects and an absence of an interaction effect remained even when the psychological trait of hardiness was controlled for. The implications and limitations of these results will be discussed. Full article

Background/Objectives: Concussions, their physical presentation, and patients’ recovery have been researched and documented numerous times, but the experiences of surviving and recovering from a concussion need to be explored further. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of NCAA Division I, II, and III student athletes who had suffered from one or more concussions. Methods: The consensual qualitative research (CQR) methodology was employed, guiding the formation of the interview questions and the analysis of the responses. The participants completed a free-response questionnaire as well as a semi-structured virtual interview that utilized a blend of idiographic, inductive, hermeneutic, and interpretive phenomenological approaches. Through their questionnaire and interview responses, they discussed their experience being concussed at a collegiate level. Results: Ten NCAA student athletes described their various physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related symptoms due to receiving their concussion(s). Many of these student athletes reported feelings of loneliness, being misunderstood, or even not feeling “normal or at baseline” during and after their concussion recovery. One primary finding was the key role the athletic trainers played in the student athletes’ recovery process from initially receiving the concussion to their return to play. Conclusions: These findings will help contribute to the knowledge of what it is like to experience one or multiple concussions, the recovery process, and how that process can be improved. (1) Background: Adolescent health and well-being are associated with sports and physical education activities. Novel therapies for athletics training, sporting formations, and physical culture are important. In areas where sports facilities are scarce and not cost-effective, they can lead to poorer physical and mental well-being in adolescents. Emotions related to sports, somatic anxiety, worry, and concentration disruption aligned with task and ego orientation have been under-researched in Pakistan. (2) Methods: A sample of 830 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19 years were recruited from Pakistan’s sports training center through purposive sampling. Sport-specific emotions, anxiety, task and ego orientation, and coaching athlete purpose (CAP) were measured. (3) Results: Regression analysis showed that different dimensions of sports anxiety (somatic trait anxiety, worry, and concentration disruption) have a significant effect on the task and ego orientation of sports education students. The Hayes process macro analysis shows that CAP significantly mediates between sports emotions and orientation. (4) Conclusions: It is important to introduce Rational Emotive Behavior Coaching and integrate ontological health and well-being for coaching in the sports field. Full article

This study interrogates whether mental toughness (MT) and self-compassion (SC)—historically framed as oppositional constructs—can coexist synergistically among NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA collegiate athletes, with mindfulness as a hypothesized mediator. A cross-sectional survey of 396 participants (mean age: 19.8 yrs ± 1.9 SD; females: 51%), revealed a robust MT–SC correlation (r = 0.46), which attenuated to 0.31 when mindfulness was modeled, signaling its role as a partial mediator. Hierarchical regression controlling for sex showed that MT and sex together explained 22% of the SC variance (ΔR2 = 0.22, p < 0.001). Adding mindfulness increased the total explained variance to 39% (ΔR2 = 0.17, p < 0.001). Females scored slightly lower on SC (β = –0.14, SE = 0.05, p = 0.008). Sobel testing confirmed significant partial mediation (Z = 7.22, p < 0.001), with mindfulness explaining 33% of MT’s total effect on SC. Mindfulness-based interventions that exploit athletes’ intrinsic attentional resources can simultaneously enhance mental toughness and self-compassion. By reconciling performance-oriented rigor with resilient self-regard, such strategies hold promise for athletes operating at diverse competitive levels. Full article

Collegiate sports serve as a powerful platform for advancing youth development and social engagement, contributing not only to athletic growth but also to personal development, teamwork, and social justice among student-athletes. This study explores the relationships among procedural justice, coach trust, perceived organizational support (POS), and team commitment in collegiate athletes. A self-reported questionnaire administered to college athletes collected 285 usable responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings reveal that higher perceptions of procedural justice are significantly associated with greater team commitment, increased coach trust, and higher POS. Additionally, coach trust positively influences both team commitment and POS. However, no significant relationship was found between POS and team commitment, indicating that POS alone may not be a direct predictor of athlete commitment without the presence of mediating factors. These findings highlight the pivotal role of procedural justice, coach trust, and POS in shaping team commitment among collegiate athletes, underscoring the importance of fair decision-making and relational trust in fostering youth development and reflecting the broader influence of behavioral and social dynamics in collegiate sport settings. Running and Thinking: Unmasking the Lingering Effects of Sports Concussions Through Complex Dual-Task Testing

Objective: This study investigated gait and cognitive dual-task costs under a dual-task paradigm that was more challenging than the traditional tasks used in research. Methods: A total of 43 18–25-year-old male and female student athletes were recruited (20 asymptomatic concussed athletes who suffered at least one concussion 2.79–7.92 months before testing, 23 never concussed). Athletes performed a complex rapid decision-making and executive function computerized task while walking continuously and maintaining a predetermined speed on a non-motorized treadmill (6.5 km/h). The outcome measures were gait and cognitive dual-task costs. Results: Repeated-measures ANOVAs were conducted to evaluate group differences. Pearson correlations were conducted to evaluate the association between dual-task costs and concussion injury variables. The results showed that both groups experienced greater difficulty with dual-task performance related to gait, whereas only the concussion group exhibited poorer cognitive performance under the dual-task condition (both not significant). The significant correlation between time since injury and gait dual-task cost (r = −0.72, p < 0.001) indicated that athletes with a more recent concussion increased their gait speed whilst athletes with an older concussion reduced their gait speed during the dual-task. Moreover, the cognitive dual-task cost was significantly correlated to symptom recovery (r = 0.461, p = 0.047), suggesting that a longer recovery time from concussion is associated with an increased dual-task cost. Conclusions: While dual-task gait alterations were common to both groups, only individuals with a history of concussion showed specific cognitive impairments under dual-task conditions. The observed associations between dual-task costs and both time since injury and symptom recovery underscore the potential of complex dual-task assessments to provide nuanced insights into post-concussion recovery trajectories and to detect subtle, lingering deficits.
