Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.), passionflower (Passiflora incarnata L.), and ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) are among the most widely used medicinal plants in European phytotherapy, with well-documented traditional use for anxiety, insomnia, cognitive decline, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Parkinson’s disease. This narrative review critically analyses available clinical, pharmacological, toxicological, and regulatory data on these three species in the context of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library; regulatory documents from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP), and the World Health Organization (WHO) were also included. Valerian showed the most consistent clinical evidence for an improvement in sleep quality and reduction in anxiety. Passionflower demonstrated anxiolytic and mild sedative effects in several controlled trials. Ginkgo showed clinically relevant benefits in mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and vertigo. All three plants exhibited acceptable safety profiles at the recommended doses; however, significant drug interactions were identified, notably ginkgo’s inhibition of CYP2C19 and antiplatelet effects, and valerian’s potentiation of CNS depressants. Regulatory frameworks across EU member states remain inconsistent. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials with standardized extract characterization are needed. Full article

To reveal the chemical composition and concentration distribution, spatial distribution characteristics, source composition, and health impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the two multi-industry industrial parks in Tianjin, 57 VOC species were determined by using SUMMA canister sampling with preconcentration gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Based on these measurements, the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was used for source analysis to achieve quantitative identification and contribution analysis of different source factors. The health risks of VOC concentrations were analyzed based on the assessment framework recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The results showed that the average concentrations of TVOCs in A-1 (Industrial Park and Cluster A, 5 m), A-2 (Industrial Park and Cluster A, 10 m), B-1 (Industrial Park and Cluster B, 5 m), and B-2 (Industrial Park and Cluster B, 10 m) were 59.72 ppbv, 45.35 ppbv, 32.44 ppbv, and 21.65 ppbv, respectively. TVOC concentrations were higher at A-1 and B-1 than at A-2 and B-2, and were generally higher at site A than at site B. The VOC components were mainly alkanes (53.5%–71.4%), followed by aromatic hydrocarbons (15.6%–36.2%), alkenes (4.6%–9.9%), and alkynes (3.1%–7.6%). The proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons in A was higher (22.13% and 36.22%), while alkanes dominated absolutely in B (71.4% and 66.9%). n-Hexane was the key species driving the spatial differences (a typical source of VOCs in solvent usage). The concentration in A-1 was 3.1 times that of A-2, and B-1 was 3.3 times that of B-2. It was mainly controlled by local solvent unorganized emissions. The differences in species between the two points at site A for toluene, xylene, etc., were relatively gentle, while at site B, the concentration of the same aromatic hydrocarbons at B-1 was significantly higher than that at B-2, presenting a clearer spatial characteristic, indicating differences in the spatial distribution of organic solvent-related industrial activities in different sites. The source analysis showed that A-1 was dominated by solvent usage (38.64%) and natural gas/LPG sources (36.96%); A-2 by vehicle exhaust (40.20%) and natural gas/LPG sources (36.15%); B-1 by cleaning-agent usage (38.81%) and fuel combustion (30.33%); and B-2 by plastic and rubber production (36.90%) and fuel combustion (31.84%). The health risk assessment showed that benzene, n-hexane, and xylene dominated the non-carcinogenic risks, but the overall non-carcinogenic (HI < 1) and carcinogenic (CR < 1 × 10−6) risks were both below the threshold. This study reveals inter-site differences in VOC concentrations, compositions, and source contributions across two mixed industrial parks, providing a basis for site-specific VOC control priorities, source-targeted monitoring strategies, and risk management in mixed industrial areas. Numerous studies have examined the contribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to soil contamination, resulting from legacy oil extraction and storage activities in the energy sector, and the human health risks. In this research, a human health risk assessment (HHRA) was performed on a site contaminated with crude oil, incorporating spatial analysis to identify hotspots of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk from PAH-contaminated soil. In total, eight soil sampling locations were considered. The HHRA was conducted using a software tool developed by the National University of Science and Technology POLIETHNICA of Bucharest according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) standards. The results obtained in the current assessment were validated against the Risk-net software 3.2 (an Italian tool for risk assessment validated by the ISPRA). The assessment considered a residential scenario (adult and child receptors) using four different exposure pathways: soil ingestion, dermal contact, vapor inhalation (due to the volatilization process) and groundwater ingestion (because of the leaching process). The carcinogenic risk (CR = 1 × 10−5) and total hazard index (THI < 1) in the studied area were above the threshold values for both adults’ and children’s receptors. The highest concern is given to the process of PAHs leaching from soil to groundwater. The highest carcinogenic concern is benzo(a)pyrene for children’s exposure via groundwater ingestion (CR = 3.53 × 10−5), while the highest toxic effect is registered for the contaminant naphthalene (THI = 6.22) for the same receptor and exposure pathway. In August 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS), and the World Health Organization (WHO) followed with a second Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), in response to the rapid expansion of clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV) across eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring countries. Both declarations have since been lifted (September 2025 and January 2026), yet clade Ib transmission and severe outcomes in pregnant women and children persist. We argue that closing these emergency mechanisms marks not the end of the epidemic but the start of a harder phase: sustaining surveillance, care, and research amid shrinking donor support, including the dissolution of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). We contend that integrating mpox into existing HIV, sexually transmitted infection (STI), and reproductive health platforms is the most realistic route to durable routine care, while pregnancy, paediatric disease, severe cases, and zoonotic spillover still need dedicated pathways. Sustainable management ultimately depends on domesticated financing, stronger institutions, genuine community engagement, and action on the ecological drivers of spillover. Full article

Over the past three decades, the United States has experienced a notable increase in weather-related disasters, including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wildfires, and severe storms, posing growing challenges to healthcare preparedness and public health systems. This study analyzes Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations from 1989 to 2019 to characterize temporal and geographic trends in weather-related events. Data after 2019 were excluded to avoid confounding effects associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted disaster declarations, resource allocation, and healthcare system demands. Using descriptive statistics, generalized linear mixed models, and spatial clustering techniques, we identified substantial increases and nonlinear patterns in disaster declarations, with variation across hazard types and regions. These trends reflect evolving hazard exposure, regional differences, and policy-driven declaration practices. Although this study does not directly measure health outcomes or social vulnerability, the observed patterns have important implications for healthcare system capacity, workforce preparedness, and populations known to be disproportionately affected by disasters. The findings highlight the need for climate-informed training, data-driven preparedness planning, and integration of disaster trend analysis into nursing education and public health practice. Strengthening the ability of healthcare systems to anticipate and respond to evolving disaster patterns is critical for advancing resilience and promoting equitable health outcomes in the context of climate change. Elemental mercury has been used in the production of bleach since at least 1892 and continues to be utilized in some manufacturing processes today. This case study examines a former bleach manufacturing facility in the western United States, where elemental mercury was utilized as an electrical conductor in the chlor-alkali process to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide, essential constituents in bleach formulation. The operational practices implemented at the facility led to the discharge of elemental mercury into both soil and groundwater. Subsequent investigations identified the presence of mercury in indoor air at levels surpassing the screening thresholds established by the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for commercial exposure scenarios. Additionally, these concentrations exceeded the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) acute 1 h reference exposure level (REL). The origins of mercury in indoor air have been identified as vapor intrusion associated with subsurface sources, along with a potential secondary indoor air source associated with mercury deposition and adsorption in building materials through the years. In the context of interim vapor intrusion mitigation, air purifiers and fans were deployed to enhance air exchange rates, while a comprehensive assessment led to the identification and sealing of 52 preferential pathways. Even with these interim vapor intrusion mitigation systems in place, elevated concentrations of elemental mercury are still present in the building and may represent the presence of a secondary indoor air source from accumulation of elemental mercury in building materials. Understanding Cd and Pb in vitro bioaccessibility (IVBA) is important for evaluating human health risks in mine-impacted soils. In this field study, we assessed Cd and Pb bioaccessibility in a heavy metal contaminated mine impacted soil that received Low and High Compost applications (180 and 360 Mg ha−1, respectively), and Native Prairie soils within close proximity to the impacted soil, using three in vitro methods (Unites States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) pH 1.5, US EPA pH 2.5, and Ohio State University pH 1.8). Total Cd concentrations under High Compost (10.3 mg kg−1) exceeded the US EPA regional screening level (RSL)–residential soil Cd concentration for ingestion non-cancer risk in children (7.8 mg kg−1), while Low Compost and Native Prairie soils were below the RSL. Total Pb (<75 mg kg−1) in all sites was below the US EPA RSL for Pb for non-cancer risk in children (200 mg kg−1). Within each extraction method, Cd IVBA remained consistently high (>70% of total) across all three sites for at least US EPA pH 1.5 and OSU pH 1.8. In contrast, Pb IVBA varied across methods, with the pH 2.5 extraction consistently yielding lower Pb IVBA as compared to the other IVBA methods. These findings suggest that Cd poses a challenge for risk mitigation at this site, while Pb shows more promising stabilization outcomes. Findings highlight the importance of tailoring amendment strategies and selecting appropriate in vitro assays when assessing remediation effectiveness and risk within multi-metal contaminated mine-impacted sites, while emphasizing the need for long-term field validation of metal stability under real-world conditions. This study investigates carbon monoxide (CO) emission potential and kinetics in two biowaste composting facilities, one of which implements process hermetization in a closed hall, in accordance with the Best Available Techniques (BAT) for Waste Treatment, representing a more sustainable waste management approach due to the reduction in uncontrolled gaseous emissions to the environment. The flux chamber method was used to measure cumulative CO concentrations before and after compost turning across 10 compost piles located either indoors or outdoors. Maximum cumulative CO concentrations (CCOmax) and CO production rate constants (k) were calculated. Results indicate that indoor composting leads to significantly higher net CO emissions, both before and after pile turning. In all indoor piles, cumulative CO concentrations exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1 h and 8 h exposure limits. Post-turning cumulative CO levels reached over 3000 mg CO·m−3, with averages ranging from above 15 to over 70 mg CO·m−3. These levels pose a serious health risk, potentially causing headaches, collapse, or even loss of consciousness in workers after approximately two hours of exposure. Additionally, compost turning in closed systems resulted in slower CO production, prolonging exposure. The study demonstrated that, although BAT-compliant enclosed systems are beneficial for the environment and support sustainable waste management practices, they may create hazardous conditions for workers. Therefore, continuous monitoring of gas concentrations is essential in closed composting facilities to ensure that environmentally sustainable waste treatment technologies are implemented together with adequate occupational safety measures, supporting a more comprehensive and balanced approach to sustainability. Background: Returning to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury remains a complex challenge in sports medicine, requiring integration of physical recovery, functional performance, and psychological readiness. Although ACL rehabilitation and RTS outcomes have been extensively investigated, the intellectual structure and evolution of this research field have not been comprehensively synthesized. Objective: This study aimed to systematically map the global research landscape of ACL injury and RTS using bibliometric analysis. Methods: A total of 1368 Scopus-indexed publications published between 1997 and April 2026 were analyzed using performance analysis and science mapping. Results: The study identified leading authors, institutions, countries, funding agencies, and journals, and examined collaboration networks, thematic structures, and emerging trends. Scientific output grew substantially after 2012, with accelerated expansion between 2020 and 2025. The United States was the most productive country, and La Trobe University (Australia) the leading institution; the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was the principal funding source. Among 4652 authors, K.E. Webster was the most prolific contributor, and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine was the most productive journal. Science mapping showed a shift from surgical and structural perspectives toward multidimensional frameworks emphasizing functional recovery, psychological readiness, neuromuscular performance, injury prevention, and athlete-centered outcomes. Emerging priorities include psychological and neurocognitive readiness, rehabilitation and performance optimization, biomechanical and functional assessment, surgical innovation, outcome validation, and machine learning applications. Conclusions: This bibliometric overview offers clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, and researchers an evidence base for guiding future investigation into functional recovery, re-injury risk reduction, and long-term athlete outcomes. As emerging infectious diseases and human–wildlife interactions increasingly transcend political boundaries, the ability to detect patterns, compare data, and respond in a coordinated manner depends on the availability of interoperable, well-structured data systems. Wildlife health data are often collected by diverse stakeholders—including field biologists, wildlife rehabilitators, hunters, veterinarians, and diagnostic laboratories—using inconsistent methods, terminology, and levels of detail. Data stored in isolated systems results in duplication, information loss, and barriers to integration. This paper describes the design and development of the Shared Wildlife Health Information System (SWHIS), an online database system designed to facilitate wildlife health data management. Development incorporated continuous stakeholder feedback, including input from state wildlife management agencies, to ensure the system aligned with real-world workflows and user needs. Launched in October 2022, SWHIS is supported by a dedicated development team with a growing suite of tools to meet diverse user needs. Priority features under development include a mobile field application, a public reporting tool, and an event alerting system. By improving data standardization, accessibility, and long-term preservation, systems like the SWHIS strengthen wildlife health surveillance capacity and support timelier, evidence-based decision-making across jurisdictional boundaries. Drug recall is a critical regulatory mechanism implemented to protect public health by removing defective, unsafe, or non-compliant pharmaceutical products from the market. Despite stringent regulatory approval processes, issues related to manufacturing defects, contamination, labeling errors, stability failures, and post-marketing safety concerns may lead to drug recalls. Regulatory authorities across the world, including the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and other national agencies, have developed structured recall guidelines and rapid alert systems to ensure timely withdrawal of defective products. Drug recalls are typically classified based on the level of health risk and may be executed at different levels of the distribution chain, including wholesale, retail, and consumer levels. Effective recall management involves risk assessment, recall communication, product traceability, documentation, and recall effectiveness checks. Pharmacovigilance systems also play an important role in identifying adverse drug reactions and quality defects that may lead to product recalls. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of drug recall systems, including causes of recalls, regulatory frameworks in India and other countries, recall classification, recall procedures, rapid alert systems, and global recall trends. The article also discusses challenges in recall implementation and provides recommendations to strengthen drug recall systems and regulatory coordination worldwide. The review additionally summarizes major official sources of recall information, including recall alerts, safety communications, and regulatory databases maintained by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), EMA, CDSCO, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and World Health Organization (WHO), and provides a comparative global perspective on contemporary pharmaceutical recall practices. This article examines the later life experiences of women who participated in the revolutionary period in Cork city and county who did not go on to marry. Many within this cohort of Cork female activists experienced poverty, ill health, economic dependency and loneliness in the aftermath of the revolutionary period. Their unmarried status left these women particularly vulnerable in a patriarchal state structured—legally, economically and culturally—on an essentialist view of the married, childbearing woman. The invisibility of adult dependency in Ireland was summed up in the 1926 Census of Population report: ‘no account is taken in this inquiry of adults who may be supported out of the household income’. Mary Daly notes the ‘high proportion of the population working within a family economy which had little reliance on money incomes and waged employment’. This may, as she states, ‘have reduced the numbers exposed to the blunt instrument of unemployment’ in the context of the 1930s depression. However, the emotional and psychological effects of economic dependency have not been considered in any depth. The lack of statutory benefits for lower-class single women who were unable to access paid employment and who did not have the requisite social insurance stamps meant that they faced a vista of poverty and dependency on charity and family members. The latter were often begrudging and indisposed to assume the financial burdens of those who they often deemed economically ‘unproductive’. This article argues that, in so many cases, financial dependency resulted in the loss of agency and autonomy for unmarried women. Full article

Hookah smoking has become a persistent social phenomenon among young adults in the United States, despite decades of tobacco control efforts. Moreover, hookah smoking presents unique public health challenges due to its strong social appeal, cultural relevance, and widespread use in urban centers and college communities. This paper provides a broad review of recent trends, health implications, regulatory responses, and sociocultural factors influencing hookah smoking. A narrative literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed articles and grey literature sources published between 2019–2025. Electronic databases included PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar, along with reports from professional organizations and government agencies including CDC, FDA, WHO, and health department agencies, to review current public health recommendations and practice guidelines. Review materials were selected that focus on prevalence, health implications, and regulations of hookah smoking. Findings were synthesized to identify key applications, challenges and concerns, and future directions. This review provided a rapid and broad review of the current trends, health implications, regulatory responses, and sociocultural factors of hookah smoking among young adults in the United States. Interdisciplinary research and policy innovation are necessary to address the ongoing public health burden of hookah smoking among young adults in the United States. Full article

Petroleum exploitation in the Niger Delta has caused widespread contamination of mangrove ecosystems, yet studies that integrate total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and metals in mangrove water are still very limited. This study presents the first dual-pollutant baseline assessment of TPH and five priority metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn) in Bille mangrove water, a severely oil-impacted system supporting about 50,000 residents. Water samples were collected from six sites along a contamination gradient (flow station, pipeline passage, old bunkering site) and analyzed for TPH (C8–C40) and metals. All concentrations are reported in mg/L for direct comparability with World Health Organization (WHO) drinking-water guidelines and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) thresholds. TPH concentrations ranged from 0.18 to 57.66 mg/L, with Site 3 (pipeline passage) showing levels about 320-fold higher than reference sites and exceeding the WHO drinking-water guideline (0.05 mg/L) by up to 1153-fold. Cadmium (0.040–0.350 mg/L) and nickel (0.055–0.561 mg/L) exceeded WHO drinking-water guidelines (Cd 0.003 mg/L; Ni 0.07 mg/L) by 13–117- and up to 8-fold, respectively. Health risk assessment, using USEPA Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund (RAGS) protocols, revealed a total cancer risk of 4.15 × 10−3 at Site 3, 41-fold above the USEPA acceptable threshold of 1 × 10−4, and extreme non-carcinogenic risk (Hazard Index = 20.03–25.51) at petroleum-infrastructure sites; cadmium contributed 86–88% of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. Ecological risk indices classified Site 3 as extreme (Potential Ecological Risk Index = 722, against the Håkanson PERI = 600 “very-high-risk” threshold), mainly driven by cadmium (Er = 310–350) and nickel (Er = 140–150). Source apportionment using the Carbon Preference Index, enrichment factors, and strong TPH–metal correlations (r > 0.88, p < 0.01) clearly identified petroleum operations as the dominant contamination source. This work demonstrates the critical importance of integrated multi-pollutant assessments in petroleum-degraded mangrove water for guiding environmental protection and public-health interventions. Background: The integration of internationally educated nurses (IENs) into healthcare workforces is expanding globally, yet organization-led support models remain understudied. Successful IEN integration requires ethical recruitment, structured onboarding, workforce support, and stakeholder engagement in policy discussions related to transition and retention. Objective: To examine the conceptualization, implementation, and policy implications of the Philippine Nurses Association of America Cy Pres Task Force’s national initiative to support IEN onboarding and transition into U.S. healthcare. Methods: This descriptive program evaluation utilized governance documents, program planning records, policy summit materials, aggregated survey findings, PNAA Human Rights Committee resources, and the Handbook for Filipino Nurses Immigrating to the United States to examine initiative development, implementation processes, and program outputs. A descriptive narrative synthesis was used to characterize program structure, stakeholder engagement, and policy priorities. Findings: The PNAA Cy Pres governance model was built around ethical recruiting, workforce integration, and advocacy. The work began with policy summits with nurse leaders, health care organizations, recruitment agencies, and policy experts, focusing on hiring, onboarding, legal issues, and staff retention. Stakeholder engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and appreciative inquiry were used to identify best practices and goals. Key outputs included the establishment of a national governance structure, implementation of national and regional policy summits, and identification of policy priorities related to ethical recruitment, onboarding, workforce integration, and governance. Conclusions: The PNAA Cy Pres initiative provides an implementation-informed approach that may help guide future workforce integration efforts. The study illustrates how ethical recruitment, workforce integration, and stakeholder engagement can help translate workforce policy principles into practice. Policy & Practice Implications: Healthcare institutions, policymakers, and professional organizations need to work together to standardize onboarding, ethical recruitment, and support mechanisms to facilitate the integration and sustainability of the IEN workforce.
