Sustainable housing is increasingly recognized as a crucial social determinant of health, intersecting environmental sustainability with affordability, safety, and inclusivity to shape population health and equity. This paper reviews the existing literature and presents that integrating sustainable housing into public health frameworks can mitigate health risks, reduce inequities, and promote resilient urban futures. This review paper reframes sustainable housing through a holistic lens, emphasizing its potential to improve health through inclusive design, energy efficiency, green infrastructure, and affordability. Theoretically grounded in the Social Determinants of Health framework, Ecological Systems Theory, Environmental Health Theory, and Life Course Perspective, sustainable housing is shown to influence health outcomes across multiple levels and life stages. Empirical studies further validate these connections, demonstrating improved physical and mental health, particularly among vulnerable populations, when sustainable housing features are implemented. While these benefits span multiple health domains, persistent implementation challenges related to equity, financing, and policy coherence can limit their reach. Equity-centered approaches and cross-sector collaboration are essential to ensure the health benefits of sustainable housing are distributed fairly. Climate-resilient design strategies further underscore the role of housing in protecting communities against growing environmental threats. Furthermore, research priorities are required to strengthen the evidence base, including studies utilizing longitudinal study designs and participatory approaches. The findings of this review call for policy innovations that embed sustainable housing within broader public health and urban development agendas. Full article

Climate change is a global crisis that disproportionately affects vulnerable agrarian communities, exacerbating food insecurity and health risks. This qualitative study explored the relationship between climate change and health in the following two rural sub-counties of Kilifi County, Kenya: Ganze and Magarini. In fall 2023, we conducted 16 focus group discussions with adolescent girls (14–17), young adults (18–30), and older adults (31+). Thematic analysis revealed that climate change adversely affects health through key social determinants, including economic instability, environmental degradation, limited healthcare access, food insecurity, and disrupted education. Participants reported increased food scarcity, disease outbreaks, and reduced access to medical care due to droughts and floods. Economic hardship contributed to harmful survival strategies, including transactional sex and school dropout among adolescent girls. Mental health concerns, such as stress, substance use, and suicidal ideation, were prevalent. These findings highlight the wide-ranging health impacts of climate change in agrarian settings and the urgent need for comprehensive, community-informed interventions. Priorities should include improving nutrition, reproductive and mental health services, infectious disease prevention, and healthcare access. Full article

In response to contemporary challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, armed conflicts, and economic instability, healthcare systems worldwide are increasingly confronted with multifaceted and overlapping crises—collectively referred to as polycrisis. These interconnected threats amplify one another, placing unprecedented strain on healthcare infrastructure, governance, and equity. The COVID-19 pandemic alone led to an estimated 16.3 million missed hospitalizations in 2020 and 14.7 million in 2021, revealing systemic vulnerabilities and deepening social inequalities. Armed conflicts, such as in Syria and Gaza, have devastated healthcare access. In Gaza, by mid-2024, 85% of the population had been forcibly displaced, with only 17 of 36 hospitals partially functioning and over 885 healthcare workers killed. Climate change further exacerbates health burdens, with over 86% of urban residents globally exposed to harmful air pollution, contributing to 1.8 million deaths annually. This study introduces a novel perspective by applying social epidemiology to the analysis of polycrisis. While the existing literature often emphasizes political or economic dimensions, our approach highlights how overlapping crises affect population health, social vulnerability, and systemic resilience. By integrating sociodemographic and environmental data, social epidemiology supports crisis-resilient care models, targeted interventions, and equitable health policies. We argue for a stronger mandate to invest in data infrastructure, enhance surveillance, and embed social determinants into health system responses. Full article

Research is required to determine whether the coinfections by Fasciola spp. and other parasite species result from poor rural hygiene or reflect underlying epidemiological patterns and causes. Therefore, the role of fascioliasis is analyzed concerning coinfection complexity, risk of multiparasitism, parasite associations, pathogenic implications and their multifactorial causes. Helminth and protozoan coinfections are studied in 2575 previously untreated individuals from four rural hyperendemic areas (Northern Bolivian Altiplano, Peruvian Altiplano and Cajamarca valley, and the Egyptian Nile Delta). This cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2011 to December 2023. Coinfections were coprologically assessed by the merthiolate–iodine–formalin and formol–ether concentration techniques. Infection intensity was measured as eggs/gram of feces (epg) with the Kato–Katz technique. Parasite and coinfection prevalences were stratified by age, sex and geographical location. High mixed infections, fascioliasis prevalences and very low non-coinfected Fasciola-infected subjects were associated with the following regions: Bolivian Altiplano, 96.5%, 16.8% and 3.5%; Peruvian Altiplano, 100%, 24.6% and 0%; Cajamarca valley, 98.7%, 21.4% and 1.8%; Nile Delta, 84.1%, 13.0% and 15.9%. Transmission routes and human infection sources underlie fascioliasis associations with protozoan and other helminth infections. Prevalence pattern of protozoan–helminth coinfections differed between Fasciola-infected individuals and individuals not infected with Fasciola, presenting higher prevalences in individuals with fascioliasis. Multiparasitism diagnosed in Fasciola-infected subjects included coinfections by up to nine parasite species, eight protozoan species, and five helminth species. The most prevalent pathogenic protozoan was Giardia intestinalis. The most prevalent helminth species differ according to environmental conditions. Several parasites indicate fecal environmental contamination. When the fascioliasis burden increases, the total number of parasite species also increases. The fascioliasis risk increases when the total helminth species number/host increases. Fasciola-infected subjects may present a modification in the clinical phenotypes of coinfecting parasitic diseases. Fascioliasis coinfection factors include transmission ways and immunological, environmental and social aspects. Coinfections must be considered when assessing the health impact of fascioliasis, including the analysis of the fascioliasis effects on malnutrition and physical/intellectual child development. Fascioliasis-control schemes should, therefore, integrate control measures mainly against other helminthiases. Full article

(1) Background: Socioeconomic conditions and environmental exposures are well-established determinants of health and aging, yet the pathways through which they influence the aging process remain insufficiently understood. Clarifying these mechanisms is critical for developing effective, equity-focused public health interventions to support healthy aging; (2) Methods: We conducted a narrative review examining the relationships between socioeconomic conditions, environmental exposures, and aging-related health outcomes. While the scope was intentionally broad to capture diverse exposures and outcomes, we applied a systematic search strategy to identify relevant peer-reviewed studies; (3) Results: The search populated over 4000 articles; 33 relevant papers were selected. The evidence suggests that environmental exposures may mediate or modify the effects of socioeconomic disadvantage on aging. Conversely, socioeconomic conditions can alter the association between environmental factors and aging outcomes. Disadvantaged populations consistently face higher environmental burdens and exhibit poorer aging outcomes, including accelerated biological aging and increased risk of age-related disease; (4) Conclusions: The complex interplay between social and environmental factors contributes to disparities in aging. Our integrative approach highlights the need for more intersectional, longitudinal research to inform interventions that address the social and environmental determinants of healthy aging. Introduction: The increasing cultural diversity of patients poses new challenges for nurses. Cultural competence, especially knowledge of the cultural determinants of health and illness, is an important element of professionalism in nursing care. The aim of this study was to analyse nurses’ self-assessment of cultural knowledge, with a focus on the six dimensions of the Giger and Davidhizar model, prior to formal training in this area. Methods: A triangulation method combining qualitative and quantitative analysis was used. The analysis included 353 statements from 36 master’s student nurses. Data were coded according to six cultural phenomena: biological factors, communication, space, time, social structure, and environmental control. Content analysis, ANOVA, Spearman’s rank correlation, and cluster analysis (k-means) were conducted. Results: The most frequently identified that categories were environmental control (34%), communication (20%), and social structure (16%). Significant knowledge gaps were identified in the areas of non-verbal communication, biological differences, and understanding space in a cultural context. Three cultural knowledge profiles of the female participants were distinguished: pragmatic, socio-reflective, and critical–experiential. Conclusions: The cultural knowledge of the participants was fragmented and simplified. The results indicate the need to personalise cultural learning and to take into account nurses’ level of readiness and experience profile. The study highlights the importance of the systematic development of reflective and contextual cultural knowledge as a foundation for competent care. Full article

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death in Bangladesh, disproportionately affecting low socio-economic status (SES) populations. This review, guided by the WHO Social Determinants of Health framework and Rockefeller-Lancet Planetary Health Report, examined how social, economic, and ecological factors link SES to TB burden. The first literature search identified 28 articles focused on SES-TB relationships in Bangladesh. A second search through snowballing and conceptual mapping yielded 55 more papers of diverse source types and disciplines. Low-SES groups face elevated TB risk due to smoking, biomass fuel use, malnutrition, limited education, stigma, financial barriers, and hazardous housing or workplaces. These factors delay care-seeking, worsen outcomes, and fuel transmission, especially among women. High-SES groups more often face comorbidities like diabetes, which increase TB risk. Broader contextual drivers include urbanisation, weak labour protections, cultural norms, and poor governance. Recommendations include housing and labour reform, gender parity in education, and integrating private providers into TB programmes. These align with the WHO End TB Strategy, UN SDGs and Planetary Health Quadruple Aims, which expand the traditional Triple Aim for health system design by integrating environmental sustainability alongside improved patient outcomes, population health, and cost efficiency. Future research should explore trust in frontline workers, reasons for consulting informal carers, links between makeshift housing and TB, and integrating ecological determinants into existing frameworks. Urban heat islands (UHIs) are a growing sustainability challenge impacting public health, energy use, and climate resilience, especially in hot, arid cities like San Antonio, Texas, where land surface temperatures reach up to 47.63 °C. This study advances a data-driven, interdisciplinary approach to UHI mitigation by integrating Machine Learning (ML) with physical and socio-demographic data for sustainable urban planning. Using high-resolution spatial data across five functional zones (residential, commercial, industrial, official, and downtown), we apply three ML models, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), to predict land surface temperature (LST). The models incorporate both environmental variables, such as imperviousness, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), building area, and solar influx, and social determinants, such as population density, income, education, and age distribution. SVM achieved the highest R2 (0.870), while RF yielded the lowest RMSE (0.488 °C), confirming robust predictive performance. Key predictors of elevated LST included imperviousness, building area, solar influx, and NDVI. Our results underscore the need for zone-specific strategies like more greenery, less impervious cover, and improved building design. These findings offer actionable insights for urban planners and policymakers seeking to develop equitable and sustainable UHI mitigation strategies aligned with climate adaptation and environmental justice goals. This study investigates the concept of landscape services (LS), which integrate environmental and sociocultural dimensions of sustainable development. Recognizing landscapes as essential to daily life and well-being, the research aims to support sustainable spatial planning by analyzing both their potential and their actual use. The study has three main objectives: (1) to assess the potential of 16 selected landscape types to provide six key LS through expert evaluation; (2) to determine actual LS usage patterns among the local community (residents); and (3) to identify agreements and discrepancies between expert assessments and resident use. The services analyzed include providing space for daily activities; regulating spatial structure through diversity and compositional richness; enhancing physical and mental health; enabling passive and active recreation; supporting personal fulfillment; and fostering social interaction. Expert-based surveys and participatory mapping with residents were used to assess the provision and use of LS. The results indicate consistent evaluations for forest and historical urban landscapes (high potential and use) and mining and transportation landscapes (low potential and use). However, significant differences emerged for mountain LS, rated highly by experts but used minimally by residents. These insights highlight the importance of aligning expert planning with community needs to promote sustainable land use policies and reduce spatial conflicts. Full article

Background: Environmental exposures, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in conjunction with social and behavioral factors, can significantly impact liver health. This research investigates the combined effects of PFAS (perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), alcohol consumption, smoking, income, and education on liver function among the U.S. population, utilizing data from the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: PFAS concentrations in blood samples were analyzed using online solid-phase extraction combined with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a highly sensitive and specific method for detecting levels of PFAS. Liver function was evaluated using biomarkers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), total bilirubin, and the fatty liver index (FLI). Descriptive statistics and multivariable linear regression analyses were employed to assess the associations between exposures and liver outcomes. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) was utilized to explore the nonlinear and interactive effects of these exposures. To determine the relative influence of each factor on liver health, Posterior Inclusion Probabilities (PIPs) were calculated. Results: Linear regression analyses indicated that income and education were inversely associated with several liver injury biomarkers, while alcohol use and smoking demonstrated stronger and more consistent associations. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) further highlighted alcohol and smoking as the most influential predictors, particularly for GGT and total bilirubin, with posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs) close to 1.0. In contrast, PFAS showed weaker associations. Regression coefficients were small and largely non-significant, and PIPs were comparatively lower across most liver outcomes. Notably, education had a higher PIP for ALT and GGT than PFAS, suggesting a more protective role in liver health. People with higher education levels tend to live healthier lifestyles, have better access to healthcare, and are generally more aware of health risks. These factors can all help reduce the risk of liver problems. Overall mixture effects demonstrated nonlinear trends, including U-shaped relationships for ALT and GGT, and inverse associations for AST, FLI, and ALP. Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of considering both environmental and social–behavioral determinants in liver health. While PFAS exposures remain a long-term concern, modifiable lifestyle and structural factors, particularly alcohol, smoking, income, and education, exert more immediate and pronounced effects on hepatic biomarkers in the general population. Introduction: Air pollution is a risk factor for a variety of cardiopulmonary diseases and is a contributing factor to cancer, diabetes, and cognitive impairment. The impact on mortality is not clearly elucidated. Objectives: The goal of this study is to determine the impact (if any) of air pollution on the 5-year mortality of patients in the American Family Cohort (AFC) dataset. Methods: The AFC dataset is derived from the American Board of Family Medicine PRIME Registry electronic health record data. It includes longitudinal information from 6.6 million unique patients from an estimated 800 primary care practices across 47 states, with 40% coming from rural areas. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index (AQI) measures were downloaded for the study period (2016–2022). Using the Python library pandas, the AFC and EPA datasets were merged with respect to date, time, and location. Cox Regression Models were performed on the merged dataset to determine the impact (if any) of air quality on patients’ five-year survival. In the model, AQI was handled as a time-independent (time-fixed) covariate. Results: The group with AQI > 50 had an adjusted hazard of death that was 4.02 times higher than the hazard of death in the group with AQI ≤ 50 (95% CI: 3.36, 4.82, p < 0.05). The hazard of death was 6.73 times higher in persons older than 80 years of age (95% CI: 5.47, 8.28; p < 0.05) compared to those younger than 80 years of age. Black/African American patients had a 4.27 times higher hazard of death (95%CI: 3.47, 5.26; p < 0.05) compared to other races. We also found that regional effects played a role in survival. Conclusions: Poor air quality was associated with a higher hazard of mortality, and this phenomenon was particularly pronounced in Black/African American patients and patients older than 80 years of age. Air pollution is an important social determinant of health. Public health initiatives that improve air quality are necessary to improve health outcomes. Full article

Despite a general decline in smoking rates among the U.S. population, smoking among low-income populations remains disproportionately high, likely due to the social determinants of health. To inform tailored approaches and responsive public health policies, the aim of this study was to qualitatively explore the sociocultural contexts, attitudes, and behaviors regarding smoking and quitting in a sample of low-income adults who smoke. In-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 adults. Participants were recruited through local safety-net primary care clinics and community sites. A thematic analytic approach was utilized to analyze transcribed interviews. In exploring smoking and quitting within the context of low-income individuals, the following six themes were identified: caught between health and tobacco use; the nuances of context; roadblocks to quitting; motivation without movement; a temporary escape; and one size does not fit all. Insights into sociocultural and environmental contexts that shape smoking and quitting among low-income individuals revealed a complex interplay of factors that perpetuate smoking behavior and make it difficult to achieve sustained cessation. The study findings point to the importance of patient-centered and collaborative approaches that tailor smoking cessation efforts to the unique needs and lived experiences of low-income people who smoke. Background/Objectives: Healthcare institutions, similar to other service providers, should prioritize their clients—in this case, patients—to effectively meet their needs. However, fulfilling this objective becomes increasingly challenging due to numerous factors. Therefore, this study explores student patient satisfaction by examining the effects of environmental quality dimensions (Internal Spaces, External Spaces, And Social Environment) and green practices, as well as investigating how environmental knowledge moderates the relationship between green practices and patient satisfaction. Methods: Given the latent nature of the variables investigated, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed. Some variables were conceptualized as hierarchical constructs comprising higher-order and lower-order components. Before testing the relationships among variables, reliability and validity assessments were performed. For this purpose, the SmartPLS 4 software was used. Since the focus of the research was on students’ health in general, the sample consisted of 280 students from the University of Novi Sad (Republic of Serbia). Results: Among the three environmental quality dimensions, only the Social Environment had a significant and positive influence on patient satisfaction. Furthermore, the green practices emerged as a significant determinant of patient satisfaction. However, the moderating effect of environmental knowledge on this relationship was found to be non-significant. Conclusions: This research underscores the significance of patient satisfaction as a critical objective for healthcare institutions. Special attention should be directed toward enhancing positive interactions between medical staff and patients and adopting green practices. Consequently, certain managerial aspects related to human resource management (such as adequate staffing and organization of personnel) should be considered. In addition, issues concerning financial challenges and benefits regarding the implementation of green practices in healthcare were presented. Full article

Background/Objectives: Oral health (OH) in early childhood is a key determinant of long-term well-being, shaped by parenting-related dietary and hygiene habits. While these influences are well-documented, they remain underexplored among Brazilian immigrant families in the United States (U.S.). Therefore, this study was designed to examine how Brazilian immigrant parents’ perceptions and practices regarding diet and oral hygiene affect their preschool-aged children’s OH. Methods: This qualitative study consisted of in-depth interviews with Brazilian immigrant parents of preschool-aged children (ages 2–5) living in the U.S. Individual, in-depth interviews were conducted via Zoom, recorded, and transcribed in Brazilian Portuguese. Two native Brazilian researchers experienced in qualitative methods conducted a thematic analysis of the transcripts in Brazilian Portuguese using MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software. The analysis focused on identifying key perceptions, parenting practices, and barriers related to children’s diet and OH. Results: Parents strongly associated sugary foods with poor OH, identifying sugar as a major contributor to dental issues. Both mothers and fathers reported limiting sugar intake and encouraging good oral hygiene practices. While parents prioritized educating their children on healthy habits, barriers such as time constraints, reliance on external childcare, and economic limitations affected the consistent implementation of strategies. Conclusions: Brazilian immigrant parents understand the importance of diet and oral hygiene in in supporting their children’s early OH but face barriers in broader social contexts, such as daycare, preschools, and communities. Interventions should aim to support parents in their caregiving roles while simultaneously addressing systemic and environmental obstacles. Public health efforts should account for cultural, economic, and contextual factors to more effectively support Brazilian immigrant families in promoting their children’s OH. Full article

The review provides an overview of research concerning the assessment of cattle welfare in different housing systems. Hence, it restricts its scope to factors known to have a particular influence on the expression of their natural behaviours. It analyses the impact of housing systems on social and maternal bonds, as well as on the health and productivity of animals and on the feeding behaviour and physical activity of animals. It also pays attention to the occurrence of stereotypies, indicating the quality of the environment in which animals live, and attempts to determine the extent to which environmental enrichment improves welfare. It can be seen that welfare can vary significantly depending on the cattle rearing system. In intensive rearing environments, weaning calves and limited space often result in stress and behavioural disorders (e.g., cross-sucking). Extensive systems, offering access to pasture and longer cow–calf contact, usually provide higher levels of welfare. A freestall system allows greater freedom of movement and social contact but requires appropriate management to prevent aggression; in contrast, the tethering system limits movement, which increases the risk of stress and health problems. It has also been shown that enriching the living space of animals can significantly improve their welfare, regardless of the housing system. By balancing productivity with ensuring that the cattle are able to express their natural behaviours and maintain good health, it is possible to benefit both the animals and the agricultural sector as a whole, increasing its profitability and gaining consumer confidence.
