Background: The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) represents an important public health challenge, especially among education workers, whose intense routine can negatively impact eating habits. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with the regular consumption of UPF among employees of the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education (RFEPCT) in Brazil. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, carried out with 1563 education workers. Validated instruments on eating habits (PeNSE), mental health (DASS-21) and quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) were used. The regular consumption of UPF was defined as intake on ≥5 days in the last seven days. The association between the regular consumption of UPF and sociodemographic, occupational, behavioral, mental health and quality of life variables was assessed by Poisson regression with robust variance, generating adjusted prevalence ratios (PRadj) and respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: The regular consumption of UPF was associated mainly with female gender, a lower age group, Southeast and Midwest regions, dissatisfaction with sleep and the body, physical inactivity and poor sleep quality. In addition, the findings suggested a significant relationship between the worst stress scores and soft drinks (PRadj: 2.11; CI: 1.43–3.13), anxiety and soft drinks (PRadj: 1.83; CI: 1.24–2.70) and depression and industrialized/ultra-processed salty foods (PRadj: 2.43; CI: 1.82–3.26). The same was observed in the scores for the worst perception of quality of life, where there was a prevalence of up to 2.32 in the psychological domain and the consumption of industrialized/ultra-processed salty foods. Conclusions: The findings indicate that multiple interrelated factors—individual, psychosocial and occupational—are associated with the consumption of UPF among education workers. These results reinforce the importance of institutional policies that integrate actions to promote dietary health, mental health care and improved working conditions in the education sector. Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a leading cause of mortality among individuals with epilepsy, particularly those with drug-resistant forms. This review explores the complex multisystem mechanisms underpinning SUDEP, integrating recent findings on brain, cardiac, and pulmonary dysfunctions. Background/Objectives: The main objective of this review is to elucidate how seizures disrupt critical physiological systems, especially the brainstem, heart, and lungs, contributing to SUDEP, with emphasis on respiratory control failure and autonomic instability. Methods: The literature from experimental models, clinical observations, neuroimaging studies, and genetic analyses was systematically examined. Results: SUDEP is frequently preceded by generalized tonic–clonic seizures, which trigger central and obstructive apnea, hypoventilation, and cardiac arrhythmias. Brainstem dysfunction, particularly in areas such as the pre-Bötzinger complex and nucleus tractus solitarius, plays a central role. Genetic mutations affecting ion channels (e.g., SCN1A, KCNQ1) and neurotransmitter imbalances (notably serotonin and GABA) exacerbate autonomic dysregulation. Risk is compounded by a prone sleeping position, reduced arousal capacity, and impaired ventilatory responses. Conclusions: SUDEP arises from a cascade of interrelated failures in respiratory and cardiac regulation initiated by seizure activity. The recognition of modifiable risk factors, implementation of monitoring technologies, and targeted therapies such as serotonergic agents may reduce mortality. Multidisciplinary approaches integrating neurology, cardiology, and respiratory medicine are essential for effective prevention strategies. Full article

Background: Airway management in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) presents unique challenges for anesthesiologists and other airway practitioners. This comprehensive review examines current evidence and clinical practices for managing difficult airways in this high-risk population. OSA is characterized by specific anatomical and physiological alterations that increase both the likelihood of encountering difficult intubation and the risk of rapid desaturation during airway manipulation. Methods: Preoperative assessment of OSA patients requires integration of traditional difficult airway evaluation with OSA-specific considerations, including severity indices, oxygen desaturation patterns, and continuous positive airway pressure dependency. Conventional direct laryngoscopy often proves inadequate in these patients, prompting the development and refinement of alternative approaches. Videolaryngoscopy has emerged as a particularly valuable technique in OSA patients, offering improved glottic visualization while maintaining physiologic positioning. Flexible endoscopic techniques, particularly awake flexible bronchoscopic intubation, remain essential for high-risk scenarios, though they require considerable expertise. Results: Recent technological innovations have produced hybrid devices combining multiple modalities to address the specific challenges presented by OSA patients. Adjunctive tools and techniques, including specialized introducers, exchange catheters, and high-flow nasal oxygen, play critical roles in extending safe apnea time and facilitating successful intubation. Professional society guidelines now incorporate OSA-specific recommendations, emphasizing thorough preparation, appropriate device selection, and comprehensive monitoring. Conclusions: Effective management ultimately requires not only appropriate technology but also systematic preparation, strategic device selection, and meticulous execution. As OSA prevalence continues to rise globally, optimizing airway management approaches for this challenging population remains a critical priority for patient safety. Full article

Background/Objectives: The use of digital technologies among children and adolescents has been increasing exponentially, raising concerns about the potential impacts on physical, mental, cognitive, educational, and social development. Understanding these effects is key to informing clinical and educational practices and public policies that promote digital wellbeing in childhood and adolescence. The main objective of this study was to map the latest available scientific evidence on the patterns of digital technology use by children and adolescents and its main impact, identifying risk factors, opportunities, and strategies for promoting digital wellbeing. Methods: A rapid review was carried out following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies published between 2020 and 2025, in Portuguese or English, that addressed the use of digital technologies by children and adolescents were included. The assessment of methodological quality was based on JBI’s Critical Appraisal Tools. Results: Ten studies from diverse contexts showed an association between excessive screen time and risks of sedentary lifestyles, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, and low academic performance. Occasional benefits arose with adult mediation and educational use; parental mediation and socioeconomic background were key factors. Conclusions: The use of digital technologies is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon that requires integrated approaches; the promotion of digital literacy, public policies for equitable access to quality digital resources, and longitudinal and intercultural studies are recommended to clarify causal relationships and adapt interventions to local contexts. Background: Snoring is a common symptom within the spectrum of sleep-disordered breathing, often occurring independently or in association with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Despite its prevalence, treatment strategies remain variable and lack standardization, particularly regarding surgical interventions. This review aims to evaluate and summarize the outcomes of soft palate and pharyngeal surgeries for adult snoring based on recent literature. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed database, identifying studies published between 2014 and 2024 that involved adult patients undergoing upper airway surgery for snoring. Inclusion criteria required pre- and postoperative snoring assessment using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Studies were categorized by surgical technique (anterior vs. lateral/circumferential), anesthesia type, presence of tonsillectomy, BMI, OSAS severity (based on AHI), and use of Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE). Descriptive analysis was performed on the changes in VAS scores. Results: A total of 43 studies involving 2713 patients were included, with 18 eligible for quantitative analysis (716 patients). Across all patients, mean VAS scores improved from 7.29 to 3.50 (ΔVAS 3.79). Both anterior and lateral/circumferential techniques yielded significant symptom reduction (ΔVAS 4.12 and 3.68, respectively). General anesthesia showed slightly better outcomes than local anesthesia. Notably, tonsillectomy was associated with greater symptom improvement (ΔVAS 5.17 vs. 4.49). Patients with lower BMI and milder OSAS showed higher baseline VAS but similar improvements. Limited objective measures and heterogeneity in surgical protocols were key limitations. Conclusions: Surgical interventions for snoring provide subjective symptom relief regardless of surgical approach or OSAS severity. Tonsillectomy may enhance outcomes. Future efforts should prioritize standardized, objective outcome measures and personalized treatment planning, potentially incorporating DISE and wearable acoustic technologies. Full article

Background: In rapidly aging societies like Japan, socioeconomic status (SES) plays a critical role in shaping older adults’ health behaviors. Disparities in SES influence access to healthcare, engagement in health-promoting activities, and the adoption of digital health technologies. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on how SES affects health behaviors among older adults and highlights challenges in promoting equitable and sustainable healthcare in aging populations. Methods: A PubMed search was conducted for English-language articles published up to May 2025 using the keywords “socioeconomic status”, “older adults”, and terms related to health behaviors. Studies were included if they focused on individuals aged 65 or older and examined associations between SES and healthcare use, digital health, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), supplements, or lifestyle behaviors. Results: A total of 24 articles were identified. Higher SES—typically measured by income, education, and occupation—was consistently associated with an increased use of preventive services, digital health tools, CAM, and healthier lifestyle behaviors such as diet, physical activity, and sleep. In contrast, lower SES was linked to healthcare underuse or overuse, digital exclusion, and less healthy behaviors. Structural and regional disparities often reinforce individual-level SES effects. Comorbidity burden and shifting health perceptions with age may also modify these associations. Conclusions: SES is a key determinant of health behavior in older adults. Policies should focus on redistributive support, digital inclusion, and SES-sensitive health system strategies to reduce disparities and promote healthy aging in super-aged societies. Full article

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis (AD), is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by persistent itching and scratching, significantly impacting patients’ quality of life. Effective monitoring of scratching behaviour is crucial for assessing disease severity, treatment efficacy, and understanding the relationship between itch and sleep disturbances. This review explores current technological approaches for detecting and monitoring scratching and itching in AD patients, categorising them into contact-based and non-contact-based methods. Contact-based methods primarily involve wearable sensors, such as accelerometers, electromyography (EMG), and piezoelectric sensors, which track limb movements and muscle activity associated with scratching. Non-contact methods include video-based motion tracking, thermal imaging, and acoustic analysis, commonly employed in sleep clinics and controlled environments to assess nocturnal scratching. Furthermore, emerging artificial intelligence (AI)-driven approaches leveraging machine learning for automated scratch detection are discussed. The advantages, limitations, and validation challenges of these technologies, including accuracy, user comfort, data privacy, and real-world applicability, are critically analysed. Finally, we outline future research directions, emphasizing the integration of multimodal monitoring, real-time data analysis, and patient-centric wearable solutions to improve disease management. This review serves as a comprehensive resource for clinicians, researchers, and technology developers seeking to advance objective itch and scratch monitoring in AD patients. Full article

Virus-like particles (VLPs) have the potential to become a versatile carrier platform for vaccination against multiple diseases. In the light of short process development timelines and the demand for reliable and robust processes, metabolic modeling of cell culture processes offers great advantages when coupled with a Quality-by-Design (QbD) development approach. A previous work was able to demonstrate the accurate prediction of HEK293F PiggyBac cell concentration as well as VLP titer and metabolite production with a reduced metabolic model. This work presents the reduced metabolic model for a more productive cell line Sleeping Beauty and emphasizes the need for model re-parameterization when the producer cell line changes. The goal of precise prediction for a fed-batch and continuous HEK293 cultivation can, therefore, be achieved. In terms of decision-making for downstream unit operations, a soft sensor for the prediction of main impurities like proteins and DNA was introduced for the first time for the production of lentiviral vectors with several terms describing the release of impurities like DNA and proteins, growth-related protein production, and enzymatic degradation activity associated with cell dissociation in an accurate manner. The additional information can contribute to a more efficient design phase by reducing experimental effort as well as during cultivation with data-based decision-making. With the aid of real-time process data acquisition through process analytical technology (PAT), its predictive power can be enhanced and lead to more reliable processes. Full article

State-of-the-art radar systems for the contactless monitoring of vital signs and respiratory diseases are typically based on single-channel continuous wave (CW) technology. This technique allows precise measurements of respiration patterns, periods of movement, and heart rate. Major practical problems arise as CW systems suffer from signal cancellation due to destructive interference, limited overall functionality, and a possibility of low signal quality over longer periods. This work introduces a sophisticated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) solution that captures a radar image to estimate the sleep pose and position of a person (first step) and determine key vital parameters (second step). The first step is enabled by processing radar data with a forked convolutional neural network, which is trained with reference data captured by a time-of-flight depth camera. Key vital parameters that can be measured in the second step are respiration rate, asynchronous respiratory movement of chest and abdomen and limb movements. The developed algorithms were tested through experiments. The achieved mean absolute error (MAE) for the locations of the xiphoid and navel was less than 5 cm and the categorical accuracy of pose classification and limb movement detection was better than 90% and 98.6%, respectively. The MAE of the breathing rate was measured between 0.06 and 0.8 cycles per minute. Full article

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are prevalent conditions with overlapping clinical features and shared consequences on autonomic function. Heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive biomarker of autonomic nervous system activity, may offer diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic insights in this patient population. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE to identify peer-reviewed English-language studies published between January 2015 and December 2024. Studies were included if they evaluated HRV parameters in individuals with OSA, COPD, or overlap syndrome, explored HRV as a marker of disease severity or progression. A total of 239 studies were identified; after screening, 41 met the inclusion criteria. Results: The analysis revealed consistent evidence linking reduced HRV with both OSA and COPD severity. HRV alterations were more pronounced in overlap syndrome, reflecting synergistic autonomic dysfunction. HRV showed potential in differentiating disease stages, predicting cardiovascular risk, and evaluating treatment efficacy, particularly for CPAP therapy in OSA. Short-term HRV was particularly sensitive to autonomic changes, while long-term recordings helped track disease progression. Emerging evidence supports the use of HRV derived from wearable technologies as a viable screening tool for health and wellness. Conclusion: HRV is a valuable, non-invasive tool for assessing autonomic dysfunction in OSA, COPD, and their overlap. It offers significant potential for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment evaluation. Integrating HRV into clinical practice, could enhance diagnostic efficiency, reduce healthcare burden, and improve outcomes in high-risk respiratory populations. Furthermore, longitudinal studies are warranted to standardise HRV thresholds and validate their use in routine screening protocols. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with sleep disturbances, particularly sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and is often linked to an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is underdiagnosed in this population due to the lack of standardized methods and limited access to appropriate diagnostic technologies and appropriate equipment. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the presence and severity of sleep disorders, with a particular focus on OSA, in children and adolescents with CP compared to their typically developing peers. Methods: This observational, clinical, and prospective study included 28 children and adolescents with CP and 32 age- and sex-matched typically developing individuals. Sleep disturbances were assessed using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and a high-resolution oximeter plus actigraphy combined with a cloud-based algorithm for the detection of obstructive sleep apnea (Biologix® system), which provided data on oxygen saturation, snoring, movement during sleep, and total sleep time. Results: According to the SDSC, 92% of children and adolescents with CP presented scores indicative of sleep disturbances, compared to 31% of typically developing individuals. SDB was the most prevalent subtype (64%) and overnight oximetry revealed that 100% of the CP group presented oxygen desaturation index (ODI) values consistent with a diagnosis of OSA. The CP group also exhibited significantly lower mean SpO2, longer snoring duration, shorter total sleep time, and prolonged sleep latency compared to the typically developing group. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) exhibit a high prevalence of sleep disturbances, with increasing evidence indicating a significant occurrence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). As people age, more careful health monitoring becomes increasingly important. The article presents the development and implementation of an integrated system for monitoring the health of elderly individuals using Internet of Things (IoT) technology and a wearable bracelet to continuously collect vital data. The device integrates MAX30100 sensors for heart rate monitoring and MPU-6050 for step counting and sleep quality analysis (deep and superficial sleep). The collected data for average heart rate (AR), minimum (mR), maximum (MR), number of steps (S), deep sleep time (DST), and superficial sleep time (SST) is processed in real-time through a health anomaly detection algorithm (HADA), based on the dimensionality reduction method using PCA. The system is connected to the Azure cloud infrastructure, ensuring secure data transmission, preprocessing, and the automatic generation of alerts for prompt medical interventions. Studies conducted over two years demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% and an accuracy of 98.5%, with a tendency to generate additional alerts to avoid overlooking critical events. The results outline the importance of personalizing the analysis, adapting algorithms to individual characteristics, and the system’s potential to prevent medical complications and improve the quality of life for elderly individuals. Background/Objectives: The prevalence of childhood obesity has recently increased, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, owing to lifestyle changes as a result of public health regulations and guidelines introduced by governments worldwide. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of novel e-Health applications in addressing childhood obesity prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study was conducted as part of the four-year European project BigO (Horizon2020, No.727688). A total of 86 children and adolescents with overweight and obesity (mean age ± standard error of the mean: 11.82 ± 0.25 years; 49 males, 37 females; 31 prepubertal, 55 pubertal) were studied prospectively for 1 year prior to the pandemic (non-COVID-19 group, n = 50) and during the pandemic (COVID-19 group, n = 36). Based on the body mass index (BMI), subjects were classified as having morbid obesity (n = 40, 46,51%) obesity (n = 21, 24.42%), overweight (n = 22, 25.58%), and normal ΒΜΙ (n = 3, 3.49%) according to the International Obesity Task Force cut-off points. The data collection system utilized the BigO technology platform, which connects to a smartphone and smartwatch to objectively record each patient’s diet, sleep, and physical activity. Participants used the BigO system continuously for 4 weeks and wore the smartwatch for specific periods during the week. Subsequently, they entered a personalized, multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention program for 4 months and used the system again for 4 weeks. Results: The key finding was a significantly higher improvement rate in BMI category among children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic (58.3%) compared to before the pandemic (36%). Both groups showed significant reductions in BMI, BMI z-score, insulin resistance indices (homeostatic model assessment and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index), blood pressure, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and insulin concentrations, alongside increases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.01). Notably, the COVID-19 group experienced a significantly greater reduction in BMI z-score at 12 months compared to the non-COVID-19 group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our results reveal that the COVID-19 group demonstrated better compliance with lifestyle interventions and experienced more significant improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors. This suggests that the innovative e-Health applications were successful in managing childhood obesity despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Full article

The widespread adoption of mobile work, driven by advancements in information and communication technology, has increasingly blurred the boundaries between work and personal life. This phenomenon can increase job stress, potentially leading to sleep deprivation, which affects not only employees’ health and well-being but also organizational performance. Grounded in Conservation of Resources theory, this study examines the pathway through which mWork contributes to sleep deprivation, focusing on the mediating role of job stress, and investigates the moderating effects of gender and number of children on this relationship. Data were collected using a stratified random sampling method across three waves with 4-week intervals, involving 325 employees in South Korea engaged in diverse occupations, including the administrative, technical, service, and sales sectors. The findings reveal that mWork increases sleep deprivation through the mediation of job stress. Furthermore, the relationship between mWork and job stress was found to vary depending on gender and number of children, with stronger moderating effects observed among women and employees with children. This study underscores the need for organizations to develop tailored management strategies that address the unique challenges posed by mWork, taking particular note of employees’ gender and family responsibilities. By mitigating the negative effects of mWork on job stress and sleep deprivation, organizations can enhance employee well-being and promote sustainable long-term performance. Full article

Background. Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that disrupt normal sleep patterns and are among the most common clinical challenges faced today. An innovative device that employs nanotechnology to deliver beneficial effects on the human body is the Taopatch® (Tao Technologies, Vedelago, Italy). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of such nanotechnology-based devices in improving sleep quality. Methods. This study included only female participants, as a review of the literature indicated that sleep disorders are more prevalent in women than in men. A total of 30 subjects (with a mean age of 44.8 ± 3.44 years) were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Sleep quality was evaluated three times throughout the study for each participant using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Taopatch® devices were applied using a specialized pillow. Results. The experimental group showed significantly better sleep quality (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that the application of the Taopatch® has a positive impact on sleep quality by optimizing posture, aligning the cervical spine, and promoting muscle relaxation. This device uses advanced nanotechnology to enhance various physiological functions, contributing to better overall well-being. Full article
