This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative anti-VEGF injections on pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) outcomes in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Material and methods: We analysed 232 eyes with proliferative diabetic vitreoretinopathy treated with posterior vitrectomy. There were 112 women and 120 men. The patients were divided into two groups of 116 eyes each. In 116 eyes (study group), an anti-VEGF injection was administered 3 to 5 days before vitrectomy. The control eyes were not injected with anti-VEGF due to systemic contraindications to anti-VEGF treatment or lack of patient consent. All participants underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil injection. The oil was removed within 2–3 months after PPV. Results: At 2 years of observation, after removal of silicone oil, visual acuity (VA) was 0.24 ± 0.27 logMAR in the study and 0.37 ± 0.45 logMAR in the control group (p = 0.003). Intraocular pressure was 16.84 ± 6.25 mmHg in the study group and 17.78 ± 6.22 mmHg in the control group (p = 0.04). The mean duration of surgery was 47.62 ± 9.87 and 50.05 ± 9.41 min in the study and control groups, respectively (p = 0.02). The size of intraoperative haemorrhage was 0.97 ± 0.86 dd in the study group and 1.51 ± 1.22 dd in the control group (p = 0.003). The frequency of surgery-induced retinal breaks was 0.34 ± 0.56 in the study group and 0.56 ± 0.76 in the control group (p = 0.003). The recurrence rate of retinal detachment was 0.05 ± 0.22 in the study group and 0.1 ± 0.31 in the control group (p = 0.15). Conclusions: Preoperative anti-VEGF therapy shortens the duration of surgery, reduces complications, and improves long-term outcomes in terms of visual acuity and maintenance of normal eye function. Triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted extensive attention as they can complete sensing during energy conversion, triggering a series of self-powered designs. Traditional TENG bipolar independent fabrication technology requires secondary motion control, which limits its application scenarios. In this work, we propose a flag-type TENG prepared using in situ electrospinning technology, in which the connecting region is obtained by electrospinning deposition of PVDF on nylon as the receiving electrode. The active area is isolated with silicone oil paper. After electrospinning, the silicone oil paper was removed, and the distance between the nylon and PVDF is far beyond the van der Waals range. Thus, contact separation can be effectively carried out under the action of wind. The device has been proven to be able to be used for monitoring wind conditions at high-speed rail stations and enables completely self-powered monitoring of the wind level using self-powered LED coding. The device no longer relies on additional batteries or wires to work, providing additional ideas for future self-powered system design. Full article

Recurrence of retinal detachment (RD) following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with silicone oil tamponade is a surgical challenge. This study proposes a novel approach utilizing segmental scleral buckle to manage early recurrences, especially in inferior quadrants. A retrospective case series of four patients with early recurrent inferior RD post-PPV with silicone oil tamponade was conducted. The segmental scleral buckle technique, with or without subretinal fluid drainage, was employed. Clinical and surgical data were collected, including visual outcomes and complications. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed during the 6-month follow-up period. Visual acuity remained stable, and retinal reattachment was achieved in 100% of cases after silicone oil removal. Segmental scleral buckle emerges as a promising technique for managing early recurrent inferior RD in silicone oil-filled eyes. The technique demonstrates favorable outcomes, including retinal reattachment and visual acuity stability, without significant complications. Further studies are warranted to validate its efficacy and establish standardized protocols. Full article

This study evaluated the neuroprotective potential of peptain-1 conjugated to a cell-penetrating peptide (CPP-P1) in an ocular hypertension model of glaucoma. Brown Norway (BN) rats were subjected to intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation via intracameral injection of silicone oil (SO), with concurrent intravitreal injections of either CPP-P1 or a vehicle. Retinal cross-sections were analyzed for markers of neuroprotection, including cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), phosphorylated CREB (p-CREB), growth-associated protein-43 (GAP43), synapsin-1 (SYN1), and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to assess retinal-layer thickness. SO-treated rats exhibited significant reductions in the thickness of the inner nuclear layer (INL, 41%, p = 0.016), inner plexiform layer (IPL, 52%, p = 0.0002), and ganglion cell layer (GCL, 57%, p = 0.001). CPP-P1 treatment mitigated these reductions, preserving INL thickness by 32% (p = 0.059), IPL by 19% (p = 0.119), and GCL by 31% (p = 0.057). Increased levels of CREB (p = 0.17) and p-CREB (p = 0.04) were observed in IOP-elevated, CPP-P1-treated retinas compared to IOP-elevated, vehicle-treated retinas. Although overall GAP43 levels were low, there was a modest increase in expression within the IPL and GCL in SO- and CPP-P1-treated retinas (p = 0.15 and p = 0.09, respectively) compared to SO- and vehicle-treated retinas. SO injection reduced SYN1 expression in both IPL and GCL (p = 0.01), whereas CPP-P1 treatment significantly increased SYN1 levels in the IPL (p = 0.03) and GCL (p = 0.002). While SOD2 expression in the GCL was minimal across all groups, a trend toward increased expression was observed in CPP-P1-treated animals (p = 0.16). The SO model was replicated with SO removal after 7 days and monitored for 21 days followed by retinal flat-mount preparation to assess retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival. A 42% loss in RGCs (p = 0.009) was observed in SO-injected eyes, which were reduced by approximately 37% (p = 0.03) with CPP-P1 treatment. These findings suggest that CPP-P1 is a promising neuroprotective agent that promotes retinal ganglion cell survival and the preservation of other retinal neurons, potentially through enhanced CREB signaling in a rat model of SO-induced ocular hypertension. In this study, we describe a case of graft dislocation into the vitreous cavity after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), and review the risk factors and complications of posterior dislocation. A 70-year-old female with disruption of the iris–lens diaphragm experienced DSAEK graft dislocation into the vitreous cavity during air re-bubbling at 1 week postoperatively. The corneal opacity hindered adequate visualization of the vitreous cavity for the immediate retrieval of the graft. Five days after re-bubbling, vitrectomy and corneal tissue removal was performed using a temporary Eckardt keratoprosthesis, and penetrating keratoplasty was subsequently performed. Two weeks after graft removal, a retinal detachment occurred. Silicon oil was used as a tamponade to reattach the retina. Three months after the last procedure, the retina was attached, and the cornea was clear. Posterior dislocation of DSAEK graft is a rare complication. A disrupted iris–lens diaphragm and previous vitrectomy are the main risk factors. Severe vision loss is more likely to occur when corneal tissue removal is delayed. In cases of delayed removal, it is advisable to take precautions to prevent possible retinal detachment. Full article

We revealed that the encapsulation of enzyme-immobilized silica particles in hollow-type spherical bacterial cellulose (HSBC) gels enables the use of the inside of HSBC gels as a reaction field. The encapsulation of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-immobilized silica particles (Si-HRPs, particle size: 40–50 μm) within HSBC gels was performed by using a BC gelatinous membrane produced at the interface between Komagataeibacter xylinus suspension attached onto an alginate gel containing Si-HRPs and silicone oil. After the biosynthesis of the BC gelatinous membrane, formed from cellulose nanofiber networks, the alginate gel was removed via immersion in a phosphate-buffered solution. Si-HRP encapsulated HSBC gels were reproducibly produced using our method with a yield of over 90%. The pore size of the network structure of the BC gelatinous membrane was less than 1 μm, which is significantly smaller than the encapsulated Si-HRPs. Consequently, the encapsulated Si-HRPs could neither pass through the BC gelatinous membrane nor leak from the interior cavity of the HSBC gel. The activity of the encapsulated HRPs was detected using the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-H2O2 system, demonstrating that this method can encapsulate the enzyme without inactivation. Since HSBC gels are composed of a network structure of biocompatible cellulose nanofibers, immune cells cannot enter the hollow interior, thus, the enzyme-immobilized particles encapsulated inside the HSBC gel are protected from immune-cell attacks. The encapsulation technique demonstrated in this study is expected to facilitate the delivery of enzymes and catalysts that are not originally present in the in vivo environment. Full article

Inclusions are one of the important factors affecting the cleanliness of molten steel. The current optimization of inclusion removal methods mainly focuses on promoting inclusions to float to the slag–steel interface so that the inclusions can be absorbed and removed by the refining slag. However, the research on the floating removal of inclusions cannot be carried out directly in the ladle, so methods such as mathematical models and physical models were developed. This article uses silicone oil to simulate the slag layer; polypropylene particles; and aluminum oxide particles to simulate inclusions to establish a water model experiment. By changing the viscosity of silicone oil and the diameter of particles, the factors affecting the movement of inclusions at the slag–steel interface were explored. Based on the water model, a mathematical model of the floating behavior of inclusions at the slag–steel interface was constructed, and parameters such as particle diameter and interfacial tension in the water model experiment were studied by the mathematical model for calculation. Both the mathematical model and the water model experimental results show that after the viscosity of silicone oil increases from 0.048 Pa·s to 0.096 Pa·s, the dimensionless displacement and terminal velocity of the particles decreases. When the diameter of the same particle increases, the dimensionless displacement and terminal velocity increases. The dimensionless displacement of polypropylene particles of the same diameter is larger than that of aluminum oxide particles, and the terminal velocity is smaller than that of aluminum oxide particles. This is attributed to the better overall three-phase wettability of polypropylene particle. When the liquid level increases, the dimensionless displacement and terminal velocity of particles under the same conditions show only slight differences (less than 10%). Full article

This study reports the outcomes of a secondary IOL implantation technique in patients that suffered from rhegmatogenous retinal detachment combined with a cataract, which included reopening the capsular bag, enabling secondary intracapsular intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. We included consecutive cases with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade, and subsequent secondary IOL implantation during silicone oil removal between September 2019 and June 2022. Demographics, pre- and postoperative clinical data, and complications were collected. Visual and refractive outcomes and IOL position were evaluated. Thirty eyes were included and followed up for a mean of 24.2 ± 5.06 months. Compared with the preoperative values, no significant changes were observed in the intraocular pressure (p = 0.170) and endothelial cell density (p = 0.336); however, the best-corrected visual acuity (Snellen: 20/83 vs. 20/38; logMAR: 0.66 ± 0.23 vs. 0.37 ± 0.32; p < 0.001) and spherical equivalent (p < 0.001) improved significantly. The mean prediction error (ME) was −0.45 ± 0.68 D (−1.9–0.54 D), and the mean absolute prediction error (MAE) was 0.62 ± 0.52 D (0.01–1.9 D). The macula-on subgroup demonstrated significantly better refractive outcomes than the macula-off subgroup (ME, p = 0.046; MAE, p = 0.008). The IOL was well positioned, with a mean horizontal and vertical tilt and decentration of 0.53 ± 0.49° and 0.21 ± 0.16 mm, and 0.54 ± 0.45° and 0.22 ± 0.16 mm, respectively. Secondary intracapsular IOL implantation provided a good and stable IOL position and satisfactory refractive outcomes, and is a feasible treatment option for patients with RRD. Full article

Titanium alloys have been of paramount interest to the aerospace industry due to their attractive characteristics. However, these alloys are difficult to machine and require grinding post-processes for quality assurance of the products. Conventional grinding takes a long time and uses a flood coolant-lubrication technique, which is not cost effective nor environmentally friendly. Several studies have been performed to prove the viability and benefit of using Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) with vegetable or synthetic-ester fluids. This work aims to find the optimum grinding parameters of creep feed grinding Ti-6Al-4V with a green silicon carbide wheel, using a flood lubrication system with water-soluble synthetic oil, MQL with ester oil, and nano-MQL (NMQL) using alumina-nanopowder homogeneously dispersed within an ester oil. It is concluded that at 0.635 mm and 1.27 mm infeeds, the three lubrication methods performed similarly. At an infeed of 1.905 mm, MQL did not provide desirable quality, though NMQL and flood lubrication performed practically identically. At a cross feed of 0.254 mm, an infeed of 1.27 mm, and a table feed rate of 6.7 m/min, these grinding parameters provide a material removal rate of 2163 mm3/min with a surface roughness across (Ra) of 0.515 µm. These parameters provide the quickest material removal rate while still maintaining industrial quality. This conclusion is based on environmental, economic, and qualitative results. Full article

Aim: To determine the clinical risk factors that may increase the occurrence of intraocular lens (IOL) calcification in patients who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). Methods: The medical records of 14 patients who underwent IOL explantation due to clinically significant IOL opacification after PPV were reviewed. The date of primary cataract surgery, technique and implanted IOL characteristics; the time, cause and technique of PPV; tamponade used; additional surgeries; the time of IOL calcification and explantation; and IOL explantation technique were investigated. Results: PPV had been performed as a combined procedure with cataract surgery in eight eyes and solely in six pseudophakic eyes. The IOL material was hydrophilic in six eyes, hydrophilic with a hydrophobic surface in seven eyes and undetermined in one eye. The endotamponades used during primary PPV were C2F6 in eight eyes, C3F8 in one eye, air in two eyes and silicone oil in three eyes. Two of three eyes underwent subsequent silicone oil removal and gas tamponade exchange. Gas in the anterior chamber was detected in six eyes after PPV or silicone oil removal. The mean interval between PPV and IOL opacification was 20.5 ± 18.6 months. The mean BCVA in logMAR was 0.43 ± 0.42 after PPV, which significantly decreased to 0.67 ± 0.68 before IOL explantation for IOL opacification (p = 0.007) and increased to 0.48 ± 0.59 after the IOL exchange (p = 0.015). Conclusions: PPV with endotamponades in pseudophakic eyes, particularly gas, seems to increase the risk for secondary IOL calcification, especially in hydrophilic IOLs. IOL exchange seems to solve this problem when clinically significant vision loss occurs. Full article

Incidences of post pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) endophthalmitis vary between 0.02% and 0.13%, and infectious endophthalmitis in silicone oil-filled eyes is even rarer. We performed a literature review to describe the incidence, protective and predisposing factors, causative pathogens, management options, and prognosis of infectious endophthalmitis in silicone oil-filled eyes. Various studies have elucidated different aspects of this condition. Causative pathogens commonly include commensals. Traditional management involves the removal of silicone oil (SO), intravitreal antibiotics and then SO re-injection. Alternatively, injecting intravitreal antibiotics into silicone oil-filled eyes has also been reported. Visual prognoses are uniformly guarded. Due to the uncommon nature of this condition, studies are limited either by their retrospective design or by small sample sizes. However, observational studies, case series, and case reports can play an important role in rare conditions until larger studies are conducted. This comprehensive review aims to summarise the information available in the literature, to act as a good source for ophthalmologists looking for answers on this topic, and to suggest areas for future development. Currently, coaxial electrohydrodynamic jet (CE-Jet) printing is used as a promising technique for the alternative fabrication of drop-on-demand micro- and nanoscale structures without using a template. Therefore, this paper presents numerical simulation of the DoD CE-Jet process based on a phase field model. Titanium lead zirconate (PZT) and silicone oil were used to verify the numerical simulation and the experiments. The optimized working parameters (i.e., inner liquid flow velocity 150 m/s, pulse voltage 8.0 kV, external fluid velocity 250 m/s, print height 16 cm) were used to control the stability of the CE-Jet, avoiding the bulging effect during experimental study. Consequently, different sized microdroplets with a minimum diameter of ~5.5 µm were directly printed after the removal of the outer solution. The model is considered the easiest to implement and is powerful for the application of flexible printed electronics in advanced manufacturing technology. Full article

Foam acidization has unique advantages such as low damage, low filtration, low friction, high efficiency, excellent retardation, and fast liquid discharge rate, which is suitable for stimulation and reconstruction of low-pressure oil and gas reservoirs that have been developed over many years. It is obtained that the main chemical components of downhole plugging materials include vegetable oil, fatty acids and their esters, silicone oil, amide polymers, and additional organic components, as well as non-organic components, elemental sulfur, ferrous sulfide, iron disulfide, silicon dioxide, mineral salts, etc. The performance of foam acid was investigated by experiments, including the effective range of action of active acids, reducing filtration, increasing temperature resistance and high-temperature stability of foam acid deep wells. The new foam acid system is developed and optimized to suitable for low-pressure deep well acidification operations. Experimental evaluation optimized the acid foaming agent and foam stabilizer and developed a new foam acid formulation with foam stability, filter loss reduction, temperature resistance, and easy backflow performance. The experimental condition is that the temperature is 90 °C, the foam quality can reach more than 70% when mixed for more than 30 s, the average half-life is 38.75 min, and the liquid separation rate is 19.90 s/mL. Its suspension is better than that of conventional hydrochloric acid, its corrosion rate is 1.872 g/m2·h, and the flowback rate of foam acid residue reaches 97%. Experimental evaluation has shown that the developed foam acid features high surface activity, stable foam, strong temperature resistance, significant speed and corrosion suppression, and excellent drainage assist performance. Dynamical simulation evaluation of reservoir core foam acidification demonstrated that the foam features long-life, strong suspension capacity, excellent rheology, low filtration, and significant acidization and plug removal effects, and can be used in stimulating the medium-deep, high-temperature, and low-pressure oil and gas reservoirs. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious and emergency condition that may cause visual disturbance. Treatment includes pars plana vitrectomy with a tamponade such as intraocular gas or silicone oil (SO). In many countries, silicone oil is still favorable compared to intraocular gases as tamponade for reattachment of retinal detachment surgery. The application provides a higher anatomical success rate, especially in cases of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) that were previously considered untreatable. Objective assessment of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the eye with silicone oil tamponade is a challenge because of the limitations and difficulties in taking images. This study aims to assess the RNFL thickness changes in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment patients using SO tamponade and its subsequent removal conducted on a total of 35 post-operative RRD patients. Central macular and RNFL thickness, as well as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), were recorded at the time of tamponade and after the removal of the SO at 1, 4, and 8 weeks, respectively. The results showed that the changes in RNFL thickness significantly decreased in the group of ≤6 months, especially in the superior and temporal quadrants, and BCVA increased after SO removal (p < 0.05). Central macular thickness was significant (p < 0.001) at the end of the visit. Improved visual acuity is associated with decreased RNFL and central macular thickness after SO removal. Full article

Background: An intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DEX-I) was found to be effective and safe for the treatment of cystoid macular edema (CME) after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and in silicone oil (SO)-filled eyes. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of DEX-I at the time of SO removal for the treatment of recalcitrant CME after successful RRD repair. Methods: A retrospective review of the medical records was performed on 24 consecutive patients (24 eyes) with recalcitrant CME after RRD repair who were treated with a single 0.7-mg DEX-I at the time of SO removal. The main outcome measures were changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT). A regression model was performed to assess the relationship between BCVA and CMT at 6 months and independent variables. Results: In all 24 patients, CME occurred after RRD repair and remained despite topical therapy. The mean time of CME onset was 27.4 ± 7.7 days after vitrectomy. The mean time between vitrectomy and DEX-I was 106.8 ± 10.1 days. The mean CMT was significantly decreased from 429.6 ± 59.1 µm at baseline to 294 ± 46.4 µm at month 6 (p < 0.0001). The mean BCVA significantly improved from 0.99 ± 0.3 at baseline to 0.60 ± 0.3 at month 6 (p < 0.0001). An elevation of intraocular pressure was observed in one (4.1%) eye, which was medically managed. A univariate regression model revealed a relationship between month-6 BCVA after DEX-I and gender (β = −0.27; p = 0.03) and macular status (β = −0.45; p = 0.001) when RRD occurred. No relationship between month-6 CMT and independent variables was found. Conclusions: DEX-I at the time of SO removal had an acceptable safety profile and achieved favorable outcomes in eyes affected by recalcitrant CME that occurred after RRD repair. RRD-related macular status is significantly associated with visual acuity after DEX-I. Full article
