In alignment with global educational trends, Australia has adopted a pluralistic approach to initial teacher education (ITE), encompassing traditional university-based programs, employment-integrated models and vocational training routes. This diversification of pathways has emerged as a strategic response to persistent workforce challenges, including chronic shortages, uneven distribution of qualified educators, and limited demographic diversity within the profession. Rather than supplanting conventional ITE models, these alternative pathways serve as complementary options, broadening access and enhancing system responsiveness to evolving societal and educational needs. The rise in non-traditional routes represents a deliberate response to the well-documented global teacher shortage, frequently examined in comparative educational research. Central to their design is a restructuring of traditional program elements, particularly duration and delivery methods, to facilitate more flexible and context-sensitive forms of teacher preparation. Such approaches often create opportunities for individuals who may be excluded from conventional pathways due to socioeconomic constraints, geographic isolation, or non-linear career trajectories. Significantly, the diversity introduced by alternative entry candidates has the potential to enrich school learning environments. These educators often bring a wide range of prior experiences, disciplinary knowledge, and cultural perspectives, contributing to more inclusive and representative teaching practices. The implications for student learning are substantial, particularly in disadvantaged communities where culturally and professionally diverse teachers may enhance engagement and academic outcomes. From a policy perspective, the development of flexible, multifaceted teacher education pathways constitutes a critical component of a sustainable workforce strategy. As demand for qualified teachers intensifies, especially in STEM disciplines and in rural, regional and remote areas, the role of alternative pathways is likely to become increasingly pivotal in achieving broader goals of equity, quality and innovation in teacher preparation. Background: Tobacco use is disproportionately high in rural areas, contributing to elevated cancer mortality, yet it often goes untreated due to limited access to care, high poverty and uninsured rates, and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explored the utility of using rapid qualitative analysis (RQA) to guide the adaptation of a tobacco-free workplace program (TFWP) in Texas healthcare centers serving adults with SUDs in medically underserved areas. Methods: From September–December 2023 and May–July 2024, we conducted 11 pre-implementation, virtual semi-structured group interviews focused on adapting the TFWP to local contexts (N = 69); 7 with providers (n = 34) and managers (n = 12) and 4 with patients (n = 23) in 6 healthcare centers. Two qualified analysts independently summarized transcripts, using RQA templates of key domains drawn from interview guides to summarize and organize data in matrices, enabling systematic comparison. Results: The main themes identified were minimal organizational tobacco cessation support and practices, and attitudinal barriers, as follows: (1) the need for program materials tailored to local populations; (2) limited tobacco cessation practices and partial policies—staff requested guidance on enhancing tobacco screenings and cessation delivery, and integrating new interventions; (3) contradictory views on treating tobacco use that can inhibit implementation (e.g., wanting to quit yet anxious that quitting would cause SUD relapse); and (4) inadequate environmental supports—staff requested treating tobacco-use training, patients group cessation counseling; both requested nicotine replacement therapy. Conclusions: RQA identified key areas requiring capacity development through participants’ willingness to adopt the following adaptations: program content (e.g., trainings and tailored educational materials), delivery methods/systems (e.g., adopting additional tobacco care interventions) and implementation strategies (e.g., integrating tobacco cessation practices into routine care) critical to optimizing TFWP fit and implementation. The study findings can inform timely formative evaluation processes to design and tailor similar intervention efforts by addressing site-specific needs and implementation barriers to enhance program uptake. The integration of passenger and freight transport by urban–rural buses is an effective approach to address two critical issues: the inefficiency of parcel delivery services and the financial struggles of public transport operators. This paper studies the county–township–village station location-routing problem for the integration of passenger and freight transport by urban–rural buses, aiming to develop an efficient transport network by establishing rational stations and designing optimal operation routes. A three-level county–township–village station network is proposed for the integration of passenger and freight transport, and a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed, including the constraints of location, allocation, capacity, and routing. A comprehensive series of numerical experiments is conducted on a randomly generated dataset to evaluate the feasibility and advantages of the proposed model. Lastly, key managerial insights are discussed. Full article

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the concept of Water Quality Volume (WQv) as a Best Management Practice (BMP) to treat the first 25.4 mm of rainfall in urban areas, aiming to capture approximately 90% of annual runoff. However, applying this urban-based standard—designed for areas with over 50% imperviousness—to rural regions with higher infiltration and pervious surfaces may result in overestimated facility capacities. In Korea, a uniform WQv criterion of 5 mm is applied nationwide, regardless of land use or hydrological conditions. This study examines the suitability of this 5 mm standard in rural catchments using the Hydrological Simulation Program–Fortran (HSPF). Eight sub-watersheds in the target area were simulated under varying cumulative runoff depths (1–10 mm) to assess pollutant loads and runoff characteristics. First-flush effects were most evident below 5 mm, with variation depending on land cover. Nature-based treatment systems for constructed wetlands were modeled for each sub-watershed, and their effectiveness was evaluated using Flow Duration Curves (FDCs) and Load Duration Curves (LDCs). The findings suggest that the uniform 5 mm WQv criterion may result in overdesign in rural watersheds and highlight the need for region-specific standards that consider local land-use and hydrological variability. The European Union’s developing rural development plan places digital and precision agriculture at the centre of agricultural modernisation and economic development. This article examines how agricultural practices in rural EU regions are being influenced by smart technology, such as drones, IoT sensors, satellite-based research, and AI-driven platforms, through an analysis of recent data from sources across the European Union. This study applies a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of strategic policy documents and EU databases, to evaluate the ways in which precision agriculture reduces input consumption, increases productivity, reduces labour shortages and rural area depopulation, and improves sustainability. By investing in infrastructure, developing communities for data exchange, and organising training for farmers, European policies such as the Strategic Plans of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the SmartAgriHubs initiative, and the AgData program actively encourage the transition to digital agriculture. Cyprus is analysed as a case study to show how targeted investments and initiatives supported by the EU can help smaller countries, with limited natural resources, to realise the benefits of digital transformation in agriculture. A special focus is placed on how solutions adapted to agro-climatic and socioeconomic conditions can contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, attracting young people to get involved in this field and opening up new economic opportunities. The results of previous research indicate that digital agriculture not only improves productivity but also proves to be a strategic mechanism for attracting and retaining young people in rural areas. Thus, this work additionally contributes to the broader goal of the European Union—the development of smart, inclusive, and sustainable rural areas, in which digital technologies are not only seen as tools for efficiency but also as key means for integrated and long-term rural development. Upgrading the industrial structure is an essential step for economic growth and the transformation of old and new development drivers. Counties situated at the rural–urban interface hold a comparative advantage in industrial upgrading compared to cities, converting agricultural resource dividends into economic value. However, whether agricultural innovation talent can facilitate this process requires further investigation. Based on a sample of 1771 Chinese counties, this study employs a quasi-natural experiment using China’s “World-Class Disciplines” construction program in agriculture and establishes a difference-in-differences (DID) model to examine the impact of agricultural innovation talent on county-level industrial structure upgrading. The results show that agricultural innovation talent significantly promotes industrial upgrading, with this effect being more pronounced in counties with smaller urban–rural income gaps, greater household savings, and higher levels of industrial sophistication. Spatial spillover effects are also evident, indicating regional knowledge diffusion. Knowledge empowerment emerges as the core mechanism: agricultural innovation talent drives industrial convergence, responds to supply–demand dynamics, and integrates digital and intelligent elements through knowledge creation, dissemination, and application, thereby supporting county-level industrial upgrading. The findings highlight the necessity of establishing world-class agricultural research and talent incubation platforms, particularly emphasizing the supportive role of universities and the knowledge-driven contributions of agricultural innovation talents to county development. Driven by the rapid expansion of e-commerce in China, there is a growing demand for high-efficiency, sustainability-oriented logistics solutions in rural regions, particularly for the time-sensitive distribution of perishable agricultural commodities. Traditional logistics systems face considerable challenges in these geographically complex regions due to limited infrastructure and extended travel distances. To address these issues, this study proposes an intelligent cooperative delivery system that integrates automated drones with conventional trucks, aiming to enhance both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to account for the diverse terrain characteristics of rural China, including forest, lake, and mountain regions. To optimize distribution strategies, the model incorporates an improved Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm combined with a hybrid genetic simulated annealing algorithm. The performance of three transportation modes, namely truck-only, drone-only, and truck–drone integrated delivery, was evaluated and compared. Sustainability-related externalities, such as carbon emission costs and delivery delay penalties, are quantitatively integrated into the total transportation cost objective function. Simulation results indicate that the cooperative delivery model is especially effective in lake regions, significantly reducing overall costs while improving environmental performance and service quality. This research offers practical insights into the development of sustainable intelligent transportation systems tailored to the unique challenges of rural logistics. Full article

Amid the global push for agricultural green transformation, sustainable agriculture requires not only technological innovation but also market mechanisms that effectively incentivize green practices. Agricultural e-commerce is increasingly viewed as a potential driver of green technology diffusion among farmers. However, the extent and mechanism of e-commerce’s influence on farmers’ green production remain underexplored. Using survey data from 346 rural households in Inner Mongolia, China, this study develops a conceptual framework of “e-commerce participation–green cognition–green adoption” and employs propensity score matching (PSM) combined with mediation analysis to evaluate the impact of e-commerce participation on green technology adoption. The empirical results yield four main findings: (1) E-commerce participation significantly promotes the adoption of green production technologies, with an estimated 29.52% increase in adoption. (2) Participation has a strong positive effect on water-saving irrigation and pest control technologies at the 5% significance level, a moderate effect on straw incorporation at the 10% level, and no statistically significant impact on plastic film recycling or organic fertilizer use. (3) Compared to third-party sales, the direct e-commerce model more effectively promotes green technology adoption, with an increase of 21.64% at the 5% significance level. (4) Green cognition serves as a mediator in the relationship between e-commerce and green adoption behavior. This study makes contributions by introducing e-commerce participation as a novel explanatory pathway for green technology adoption, going beyond traditional policy-driven and resource-based perspectives. It further highlights the role of cognitive mechanisms in shaping adoption behaviors. The study recommends that policymakers subsidize farmers’ participation in e-commerce, invest in green awareness programs, and support differentiated e-commerce models to enhance their positive impact on sustainable agricultural practices. Background/Objectives: The pediatric mental health crisis in the United States has reached unprecedented levels. Severe shortages in specialized health care professionals, particularly child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs), exacerbate the challenge of delivering timely and quality mental health care, especially in rural areas like Kansas. Innovative models such as Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) programs and School-Based Health Clinics (SBHCs) aim to integrate mental health expertise into primary care settings to address this gap. Methods: This paper examines an integrated care model to support SBHCs developed by the Kansas PMHCA. The Interprofessional Child-Centered Integrated Care Model (ICX2) was implemented within an SBHC in Haysville, KS. ICX2 utilizes biweekly collaborative team meetings (CTMs) via zoom involving primary care, psychology, child psychiatry, social work, and school resource coordinators to discuss patient cases and enhance the primary care management of pediatric mental health. This descriptive study analyzes data from January 2023 to June 2023, focusing on patient demographics, case characteristics discussed during CTMs, and recommendations made by the interprofessional team. Results: Findings illustrate the complex biopsychosocial needs of patients seen and define themes of case consultation and recommendations. Conclusions: Integrated care programs like ICX2 can be feasibly implemented through PMHCA programs and may be an efficient intervention to bridge resource gaps. Full article

The efficacy of government subsidy programs in agriculture is frequently compromised by internal policy conflicts that arise between competing government departments. This challenge is addressed herein, with a focus on the policy environment in China, through the development of a game-theoretic model of an agricultural supply chain. This model explicitly incorporates two competing government bodies—the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Department (ARAD) and the Development and Reform Commission (DRC)—each with distinct objectives and performance indicators. Within this framework, the strategic interactions of four subsidy types are analyzed: production and cold-chain subsidies (ARAD), and platform operation and blockchain subsidies (DRC). The findings reveal that department-specific performance indicators can significantly distort the overall effectiveness of subsidies. While individual subsidies may achieve their intended departmental goals, their combined impact is shown to be complex and frequently suboptimal in the absence of higher-level coordination. Notably, a subsidy portfolio combining production and platform operation subsidies is found to consistently yield superior performance in maximizing social welfare. Ultimately, this research contributes a new framework for understanding subsidy policies and provides actionable insights for optimizing interdepartmental coordination to enhance supply chain performance. In the context of increasing demands for sustainable natural resource management, this study analyzes the demographic and structural characteristics of family farms in Croatia and their participation in three environmental measures under the 2014–2022 Rural Development Programme. Using national administrative data and spatial analysis, the results highlight key patterns linked to age, education, gender, and ownership, as well as regional disparities in measure uptake. The findings suggest the importance of tailoring rural development policy to small farms’ specific needs to improve future CAP implementation. Full article

The empowerment of rural women through sustainable entrepreneurship is pivotal for fostering economic development and social transformation in developing communities. This study examines the impact of university social responsibility (USR) programs on strengthening sustainable entrepreneurship among rural women, emphasizing the mediating role of economic empowerment. Utilizing a structural equation model (SEM), we explore causal pathways between USR interventions, entrepreneurial capacities, and the sustainability of rural businesses. Key dimensions analyzed include economic resources, social networks, and psychological self-efficacy, as well as their interrelation with community development. The findings demonstrate that multidimensional USR programs integrating technical training, social support, and economic resources significantly enhance entrepreneurial resilience and value chain integration. Notably, the analysis reveals that economic empowerment mediates the relationship between USR programs and business sustainability, with improvements in community participation and ICT quality identified as critical drivers. Furthermore, the post-intervention results highlight a shift from technology access challenges to a focus on ICT content quality and psychosocial development, reflecting maturity in community adaptation and resource utilization. This research provides empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of USR programs in catalyzing sustainable transformations in rural contexts. The results offer actionable insights for designing targeted interventions that integrate technical, social, and economic dimensions, contributing to the advancement of sustainable entrepreneurship and rural development theory. Introduction: Based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2020 (CHARLS 2020), we analyzed the effects of physical activity (PA) on chronic diseases and depression symptoms in older adults in urban and rural areas and examined differences by residential location. Methods: A total of 5481 individuals aged 65 years and above were selected from the CHARLS 2020 dataset. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, two-way analysis of variance, and Pearson’s correlation analysis were used to examine the influence of different intensities of PA on chronic diseases and depression symptoms. According to PA recommendations, PA participants were individuals who engaged in PA two or more times per week, while non-participants engaged in PA fewer than two times per week. Results: Urban and rural older adults showed different patterns in PA participation and its health impacts. Urban residents were more likely to engage in high-intensity PA, which was related to lower prevalence of chronic diseases and fewer depressive symptoms; moderate-intensity PA was also effective in relieving depressive symptoms. In contrast, rural residents primarily participated in low-intensity PA, which had some effect in alleviating depression symptoms but limited impact on chronic diseases. Conclusions: Public health interventions should be tailored to regional differences. In rural areas, the promotion of appropriate PA programs is essential to improve overall health, while urban areas should emphasize mental health strategies, social engagement, and support network development. Background: Physical inactivity among adolescents, particularly females in conservative societies like Saudi Arabia, poses significant risks to both physical and psychological health. Cultural norms, environmental constraints, and limited access to gender-appropriate sports facilities further exacerbate the problem. Understanding these factors is essential for developing effective, context-sensitive interventions. Aim: This study aimed to examine the relationship between daily physical activity behaviours and health outcomes, both physical and psychological, among adolescent females in Saudi Arabia. This paper also explores the impact of socio-environmental variables such as income, household size, and urban/rural residence on activity levels and wellbeing. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 636 adolescent females aged 13–21 was conducted using validated instruments. The Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) measured physical activity levels, and the Self-Rated Health (SRH) assessed psychological wellbeing and health-related quality of life. The analysis employed an Ordinal Logistic Model (OLM) guided by the Social Ecological Model (SEM) to assess predictors of physical activity participation. Results: The OLM results indicated that higher income levels, smaller household size, urban residence, and older age categories were significantly associated with higher levels of physical activity (p < 0.05). Participants with higher PAQ-A scores reported better psychological health and quality of life. The model showed a good fit, with a pseudo-R2 of 0.36. Cultural and environmental barriers, particularly in rural areas, were identified as significant deterrents to participation. Conclusions: The findings highlight the urgent need for culturally adapted, gender-sensitive health promotion programs that target both individual and structural barriers to physical activity among adolescent girls in Saudi Arabia. Enhanced societal support and accessible sports infrastructure could significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life. Full article

Background: Chronic diseases negatively impact health outcomes and are attributed to elevated morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Rural populations are disproportionately affected by chronic diseases and have limited access to health programs and resources. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the cognitive impact that a web-based lifestyle medicine intervention had on participants recruited from rural community settings in the southeastern United States. This qualitative study was the second phase of a mixed methods design, which used a randomized controlled trial to evaluate intervention effects. Methods: The descriptive design of this qualitative study included semi-structured interviews to collect information about the impact of a lifestyle medicine intervention. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using the grounded theory method of thematic analysis in an iterative process for discovering patterns, central themes, and concepts. Results: The four themes that emerged were (a) gaining awareness and overcoming barriers, (b) encouraging others as a “ripple effect”, (c) realizing actualities, and (d) seeing progress. These themes highlighted the cognitive impact of an online lifestyle medicine program and provided insights about how rural dwellers perceived and processed educational health information. Conclusions: This study shows that the intervention had a positive influence on participants that continued after participation. The findings of this study provide recommendations that can facilitate intervention development and implementation among rural populations. Full article
