During the construction and maintenance of asphalt pavement, a lot of non-renewable resources are consumed, which discharge a variety of waste gasses and smoke, causing a serious impact on the environment. Reducing society’s reliance on non-renewable resources is therefore key to improving sustainability. It is found that phase change materials (PCMs), as environmentally friendly materials, can spontaneously store and release heat energy by changing the phase state, thus reducing the adverse effect of temperature on asphalt pavement, reducing the occurrence of high-temperature stress, minimizing the cost of road construction and maintenance, and saving resources. In order to promote the application of PCMs in asphalt pavement, to promote self-controlling temperature technology for asphalt pavement, and to improve the sustainable development of asphalt pavement, this paper reviews the research status of PCMs in asphalt pavement, both domestically and abroad. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the modified asphalt binder can reach 0.29–0.39 W/mK, and the thermal diffusivity can reach 0.2–0.3 mm2/s, but the influence on the viscosity of the asphalt is limited, and both are less than 2000CP. The durability and thermal stability of the modified asphalt mixture are improved, and the maximum temperature can be lowered by 9 °C, which effectively reduces the occurrence of hightemperature stress. This review will help to better understand the function of PCMs and promote the sustainable development of green and environmentally friendly asphalt pavement. Full article

With the advancement of artificial intelligence, the home care environment for elderly users is becoming increasingly intelligent and systematic. The context aware human–computer interaction technology of sustainable aging-friendly smart homes can effectively identify user needs, enhance energy efficiency, and optimize resource utilization, thereby improving the convenience and sustainability of smart home care services. This paper reviews literature and analyzes cases to summarize the background and current state of context-aware interaction experience research in aging-friendly smart homes. Targeting solitary elderly users aged 60–74, the study involves field observations and user interviews to analyze their characteristics and needs, and to summarize the interaction design principles for aging-friendly smart homes. We explore processes for context-aware and methods for identifying user behaviors, emphasizing the integration of green, eco-friendly, and energy-saving principles in the design process. Focusing on the living experience and quality of life for elderly users living alone, this paper constructs a context-aware user experience model based on multimodal interaction technology. Using elderly falls as a case example, we design typical scenarios for aging-friendly smart homes from the perspectives of equipment layout and innovative hardware and software design. The goal is to optimize the home care experience for elderly users, providing theoretical and practical guidance for smart home services in an aging society. Ultimately, the study aims to develop safer, more convenient, and sustainable home care solutions. Full article

With the development of society, the chemical industry is expanding, and the hazy weather everywhere is becoming increasingly frequent, already affecting people’s lives and causing them to pay more attention to environmental issues. Therefore, this paper highlights the role of women in environmental protection by studying the coordination of environmental protection and female discrimination based on the concept of affirmative action. Through this study and a survey, we found that China has not yet realized that women’s participation in environmental protection plays a key role in improving the quality of our environment and the development of ecological civilization. However, we should clearly understand that environmental issues are not only personal, they are related to the survival and development of a country, and as a member of that country, both women and men should have the right and obligation to protect the environment. Therefore, this article discusses the concept and meaning of affirmative action and gender discrimination in the context of research on these concepts, discussing the problems and phenomena that women encounter in environmental protection. These include the system of women’s environmental protection, gender issues for women in society, and the unequal treatment from the Government based on some studies. Through the study and analysis of the system of women’s environmental protection, the role and position of women in this regard is summarized. Finally, it is suggested that, for the construction and development of ecological civilization in China, it is necessary to fully integrate ecological civilization into all aspects of society and pay attention to environmental protection issues. Therefore, we should pay attention to the role of women in environmental protection, provide corresponding policies, and actively encourage women to partake in environmental protection in order to build an environmentally friendly and resource-saving society together. With the increase of expressway construction in seasonal frozen soil region, the freeze-thaw problem of subgrade soil has attracted more and more attention. In addition, the comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste has become an important measure to build a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. In order to improve the frost resistance of subgrade soil and realize the resource utilization of industrial solid waste, carbide slag (CS) and coal gangue powder (CG) were applied to the subgrade soil. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, freeze-thaw cycle test, dry shrinkage test, temperature shrinkage test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test were carried out on CS-CG stabilized soil with a ratio of CS:CG = 70:30 and dosages of 5%, 10% and 15%. The freeze-thaw cycle degradation model of CS-CG stabilized soil was constructed to show the freeze-thaw deterioration mechanism after the mechanical properties, pore structure, and durability characteristics of the stabilized soil were examined. The results showed that the CS-CG stabilized soil had good frost resistance. After 6 freeze-thaw cycles, the UCS at 7d and 28 d was 2.86 MPa and 3.79 MPa, respectively, which were 22.6% and 35.5% lower than in samples that underwent no freeze-thaw action. The CS-CG stabilized soil had good crack resistance, slightly better dry shrinkage strain than lime stabilized soil, and excellent temperature shrinkage performance. With the increase of CS-CG dosage, the hydration products increased continuously. After freeze-thaw cycles, however, large pores and cracks gradually appeared in the stabilized soil, which led to an increase of porosity and pore diameter, and a decrease of pore abundance. Due to the influence of hydration degree, the porosity change at 7 d was less than that at 28 d. There was a f(n)/f0=βexpλΔh relationship between UCS residual ratio and porosity variation of the CS-CG stabilized soil, and it had a good correlation. The CS-CG stabilized soil had good frost resistance and shrinkage characteristics, and could replace traditional cementitious materials such as Portland cement (PC) and lime for subgrade soil improvement in regions with seasonal frozen soil. Future research needs to focus on the performance regulation of CS-CG stabilized soil, which can make it more widely used. Full article

Since the 21st century, China has made many explorations to alleviate the increasingly serious air pollution problem. This study analyses the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and future development of PM2.5 concentration in the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration from 2008 to 2019. In addition, the driving mechanism of spatial differentiation of PM2.5 concentration in this urban agglomeration was also investigated. The results were as follows. Firstly, the PM2.5 concentration showed a trend of gradual decline between 2008 and 2019. Secondly, the PM2.5 concentration distribution was high in the northwest and low in the southeast. Thirdly, PM2.5 concentration showed a strong spatial agglomeration. Fourth, except for some rural areas of Chaling County and Yanling County, the concentration of PM2.5 in other areas was very likely to continue the past trend of gradual decline. Finally, natural and meteorological conditions played a leading role in the evolution of PM2.5 concentration. The influence of socioeconomic factors is small now, but the trend is increasing. To improve air quality deeply, policymakers need to promote comprehensive control of regional air pollution by simultaneously reducing emissions and taking comprehensive treatment. They also need to strengthen supervision to prevent excessive pollution in some rural areas from worsening air quality in the surrounding areas. Full article

The operating environment and using conditions of mechanical products are complex and diverse, which has caused a large number of mechanical products to be unable to be remanufactured or have low-remanufacturability. Such products are often ignored by remanufacturing companies and society, which aggravates environmental pollution and waste of resources. Therefore, this article provides a decision-making model for two strategies of complete machine remanufacturing (CMR) and part remanufacturing (PR) for used products with low-remanufacturability. Firstly, from the perspective of the remanufacturing process under the existing technical conditions, the economic, environmental, and social benefits of different remanufacturing solutions are analyzed. Secondly, the entropy method is used to weigh the economic, environmental, and social benefits to reduce the model error, and the linear regression method is used to find the comprehensive benefits of its different remanufacturing strategies. Finally, through the decision-making research on the remanufacturing strategies of the used machine tool CA6180, the results show that the tested machine tool should choose the remanufacturing strategy of PR and put it on the market. Moreover, the decision-making strategy proposed in this paper helps to realize a resource-saving and environment-friendly manufacturing ecology and provides a new perspective for remanufacturing research. While participation in the international division of labor has led to rapid economic development, it has also resulted in pressing environmental issues in China. In the context of “building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society” and the current sustainability requirements, research on the environmental impact of Chinese paper companies from the perspective of Environmental Information Disclosure (EID) policy and trade has not yet reached a consensus. This study constructs an analytical framework for the EID policy impact mechanism and trade on the environmental effects of the paper industry and enterprises. It explores the direct and indirect effects of EID policy and import-and-export trade on the paper industry environmental effects using the Propensity Score Matching and Difference-in-Differences (PSM-DID) model. EID positively impacts the pollution reduction of enterprises mainly through the technical effect. Export trade positively impacts the reduction of enterprises’ emissions through the technology effect. However, the demand of the international market increases the pollution from the paper industries, which has a negative impact. Importing will enable enterprises to obtain greater price advantages which can alleviate and transfer the costs brought by EID. This study analyzes the impact of trade on the environmental effects of Chinese paper enterprises and identifies the impact of China’s EID policy and trade on enterprises’ pollution emissions. It provides a theoretical and practical foundation for the Chinese government to formulate environmental and trade policies. Full article

Impact of Resource-Saving and Environment-Friendly Society Construction on Sustainability

Promoting coordinated and environmentally sustainable development of the Chinese economy is one of the primary tasks at the moment, as well as one of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. The Resource-saving and Environment-friendly Society (RES) has created a pilot promotion policy aimed at China, with the goal of supporting the sustainable development of economic production activities while preserving natural ecosystems. In this investigation, we used the global Malmquist–Luenberger index with a slack-based measure of the directional distance function to calculate the industrial green total factor productivity (IGTFP) of 105 prefecture-level cities along the Yangtze River from 2004 to 2019; IGTFP was used as a proxy for sustainable development. Then, by considering the RES construction as a quasi-natural experiment, we used propensity score matching difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) to determine the effect of RES construction on sustainable development of the Yangtze River economic belt. We also employed the mediating effect model and triple difference (DDD) model to further analyze the mechanisms underlying the heterogeneous impacts of different urban characteristics. The results revealed three key findings. (1) According to the IGTFP calculation results, RES construction can effectively promote green technological progress while inhibiting green technological efficiency. (2) After carrying out a series of robustness tests, we found that RES construction increased the IGTFP of pilot cities by 4%, indicating that RES construction can significantly promote the sustainable development of pilot cities along the Yangtze River. (3) The results of the mechanism analysis showed that RES construction had a significantly positive impact on sustainable development through technological innovation, human capital, energy conservation, and emission control. In terms of different urban characteristics, the RES construction promoted sustainable development in first-tier cities, second-tier cities, and resource-based cities. We summarized the practical experience of the RES construction as a typical pilot promotion policy. It provides an empirical basis for planning the construction of eco-friendly urban areas in the 21st century and responding to the international community’s sustainable development goals from a Chinese perspective. Water resource is an important foundation to support industrial and agricultural production, in the maintenance of national energy security role is irreplaceable. Water conservation and the effective use of water resources are essential for achieving sustainable development in China. The construction of water-saving society is a prerequisite for realizing efficient utilization of water resources and an important strategic development for moving towards environment-friendly society. This study established an index system to evaluate the implementation of water-saving measures in Xiangtan, Hunan province, China. The index system incorporated five aspects: (1) comprehensiveness; (2) agricultural water; (3) industrial water; (4) domestic water, and; (5) aquatic ecology and environmental management. Analytic hierarchy (AH) was used to determine the weights of indices, and AH was integrated with grey relative analysis to establish a comprehensive system for the evaluation of the water-saving measures in Xiangtan. The results showed that the implementation of water-saving measures in Xiangtan is generally progressing well. However, industrial added value water consumption per 10,000-yuan remains at the primary stage and wastewater reuse remains limited. In addition, water use per 10,000-yuan gross domestic product, the coverage of water-saving irrigation projects, industrial wastewater reuse, and the leakage rate of urban water supply network remain at an intermediate stage. The result of this study can scientifically reflect the level of the water-saving measures in place in Xiangtan and could guide future implementation of water saving measures in Xiangtan and in other cities. Sustainability assessment can analyze the challenges of regional development from societal, economic, and environmental dimensions and provide an important baseline for regional planning. Recently, the rapid socio-economic development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration has inflicted great pressure on the regional environment. Therefore, this paper evaluated the sustainability dynamics of the BTH urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2015 at the city scale using the Human Sustainable Development Index (HSDI) and discussed the major drivers of the changes in regional sustainability. The results showed that the overall sustainability of the BTH urban agglomeration increased from 2000 to 2015, with the HSDI increasing by 10%. Among the three dimensions, the economic sustainability indicators grew the fastest, with a growth rate of 42%, while the environmental sustainability indicators declined by 8%. The decline of environmental sustainability played an important role in limiting regional sustainable development. Specifically, the optimization of the energy structure in six cities, e.g., Tangshan, Langfang and Cangzhou, was relatively weaker than that in the remaining seven cities. In the future, the BTH urban agglomeration must further optimize the energy structure to build a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society. Full article
