This study focuses on cultural and urban development policies under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, exploring the content and semantic structure of discussions on the “East Asian Cultural Capital” project on the Weibo platform. It analyzes how national cultural development policies are reflected in the discourse system related to the “East Asian Cultural Capital” on social media and emphasizes the guiding role of policies in the dissemination of online culture. When China announced the 14th Five-Year Plan in 2021, the strategic direction and policy framework for cultural development over the five-year period from 2021 to 2025 were clearly outlined. This study employs text mining and semantic network analysis methods to analyze user-generated content on Weibo from 2023 to 2024, aiming to understand public perception and discourse trends. Word frequency and TF-IDF analyses identify key terms and issues, while centrality and CONCOR clustering analyses reveal the semantic structure and discourse communities. MR-QAP regression is employed to compare network changes across the two years. Findings highlight that urban cultural development, heritage preservation, and regional exchange are central themes, with digital media, cultural branding, trilateral cooperation, and cultural–economic integration emerging as key factors in regional collaboration. Wildfire regimes are closely linked to changes in landscape structure, yet the influence of accelerated land use transitions on fire activity remains poorly understood, particularly in rapidly transforming regions like central Chile. Although land use change has been extensively documented in the country, the specific role of the speed, extent, and spatial configuration of these transitions in shaping fire dynamics requires further investigation. To address this gap, we examined how landscape transitions influence fire frequency in central Chile, a region experiencing rapid land use change and heightened fire activity. Using multi-temporal remote sensing data, we quantified land use transitions, calculated landscape metrics to describe their spatial characteristics, and applied intensity analysis to assess their relationship with fire frequency changes. Our results show that accelerated landscape transitions significantly increased fire frequency, particularly in areas affected by forest plantation rotations, new forest establishment, and urban expansion, with changes exceeding uniform intensity expectations. Regional variations were evident: In the more densely populated northern areas, increased fire frequency was primarily linked to urban development and deforestation, while in the more rural southern regions, forest plantation cycles played a dominant role. Areas with a high number of large forest patches were especially prone to fire frequency increases. These findings demonstrate that both the speed and spatial configuration of landscape transitions are critical drivers of wildfire activity. By identifying the specific land use changes and landscape characteristics that amplify fire risks, this study provides valuable knowledge to inform fire risk reduction, landscape management, and urban planning in Chile and other fire-prone regions undergoing rapid transformation. Object detection in remote sensing imagery is critical in environmental monitoring, urban planning, and land resource management. However, the task remains challenging due to significant scale variations, arbitrary object orientations, and complex background clutter. To address these issues, we propose a novel orientation module (SOAM Block) that jointly models object scale and directional features while exploiting geometric symmetry inherent in many remote sensing targets. The SOAM Block is constructed upon a lightweight and efficient Adaptive Multi-Scale (AMS) Module, which utilizes a symmetric arrangement of parallel depth-wise convolutional branches with varied kernel sizes to extract fine-grained multi-scale features without dilation, thereby preserving local context and enhancing scale adaptability. In addition, a Strip-based Context Attention (SCA) mechanism is introduced to model long-range spatial dependencies, leveraging horizontal and vertical 1D strip convolutions in a directionally symmetric fashion. This design captures spatial correlations between distant regions and reinforces semantic consistency in cluttered scenes. Importantly, this work is the first to explicitly analyze the coupling between object scale and orientation in remote sensing imagery. The proposed method addresses the limitations of fixed receptive fields in capturing symmetric directional cues of large-scale objects. Extensive experiments are conducted on two widely used benchmarks—DOTA and HRSC2016—both of which exhibit significant scale variations and orientation diversity. Results demonstrate that our approach achieves superior detection accuracy with fewer parameters and lower computational overhead compared to state-of-the-art methods. The proposed SOAM Block thus offers a robust, scalable, and symmetry-aware solution for high-precision object detection in complex aerial scenes. Full article

Excess Commuting in Rural Minnesota: Ethnic and Industry Disparities

Research on commuting patterns has mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas, and such studies are not typically applied to rural and small-town regions, where workers often face longer commutes due to limited job opportunities and inadequate public transportation. By using the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) data, this research fills that gap by analyzing commuting behavior by ethnic group and industry in south-central Minnesota, which is a predominantly rural area of 13 counties in the United States. The results show that both white and minority groups in District 7 experienced an increase in excess commuting from 2006 to 2016, with the minority group in Nobles County showing a significantly higher rise. Analysis by industry reveals that excess commuting in the leisure and hospitality sector (including arts, entertainment, and food services) in Nobles County increased five-fold during this time, indicating a severe spatial mismatch between jobs and affordable housing. In contrast, manufacturing experienced a decline of 50%, possibly indicating better commuting efficiency or a loss of manufacturing jobs. These findings can help city and transportation planners conduct an in-depth analysis of rural-to-urban commuting patterns and develop potential solutions to improve rural transportation infrastructure and accessibility, such as promoting telecommuting and hybrid work options, expanding shuttle routes, and adding more on-demand transit services in rural areas. The growth of rural residents’ disposable income is essential for narrowing the income gap between urban and rural areas and promoting integrated development. This study explores how China’s National Main Functional Zoning Plan influences rural household income through its regulatory impact on construction land expansion. Using data from county−level administrative units across China, the research identified the construction land regulation index as a key mediating variable linking zoning policy to changes in household income. By shifting the analytical perspective from a traditional urban–rural classification to a framework aligned with the National Main Functional Zoning Plan, the study reveals how spatial planning tools, particularly differentiated land quota allocations, influence household income. The empirical results confirm a structured causal chain in which zoning policy affects land development intensity, which in turn drives rural income growth. This relationship varies across different functional zones. In key development zones, strict land control limits income potential by constraining land supply. In main agricultural production zones, moderate regulatory control enhances land use efficiency and contributes to higher income levels. In key ecological function zones, ecological constraints require diverse approaches to value realization. The investigation contributes both theoretical and practical insights by elucidating the microeconomic effects of national spatial planning policies and offering actionable guidance for optimizing land use regulation to support income growth tailored to regional functions. This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Urban vegetation monitoring is essential for sustainable city planning but is often constrained by the high cost and limited frequency of field-based inventories. This study evaluates the use of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived from Sino-Brazilian CBERS-4A satellite imagery, as a spatially explicit and low-cost proxy for urban tree census data. CBERS-4A provides medium-resolution multispectral data freely accessible across South America, yet remains underutilized in urban environmental applications. Focusing on Aracaju, a metropolitan region in northeastern Brazil, we compared NDVI-based classification results with official municipal tree census data from 2022. The analysis revealed a strong spatial correlation, supporting the use of NDVI as a reliable indicator of canopy presence at the urban block scale. In addition to mapping vegetation distribution, the NDVI results identified areas with insufficient canopy coverage, directly informing urban greening priorities. By validating remote sensing data against field inventories, this study demonstrates how CBERS-4A imagery and vegetation indices can support municipal tree management and serve as scalable tools for environmental planning and policy. Previous reviews have examined specific facets of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in transportation planning, such as transit-focused applications and open source geospatial tools. However, this study offers the first systematic, PRISMA-guided longitudinal evaluation of GIS integration in transportation planning, spanning thematic domains, data models, methodologies, and outcomes from 2004 to 2024. This study addresses this gap through a longitudinal analysis of GIS-based transportation research from 2004 to 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. By conducting a mixed-methods analysis of 241 peer-reviewed articles, this study delineates major trends, such as increased emphasis on sustainability, equity, stakeholder involvement, and the incorporation of advanced technologies. Prominent domains include land use–transportation coordination, accessibility, artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring, and policy evaluation. Expanded data sources, such as real-time sensor feeds and 3D models, alongside sophisticated modeling techniques, enable evidence-based, multifaceted decision-making. However, challenges like data limitations, ethical concerns, and the need for specialized expertise persist, particularly in developing regions. Future geospatial innovations should prioritize the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, inclusive capacity building, and environmental justice to foster equitable and efficient transportation systems. This review highlights GIS’s evolution from a supplementary tool to a cornerstone of data-driven, sustainable urban mobility planning, offering insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to advance transportation strategies that align with equity and sustainability goals. Consumer-accessible and user-friendly smart products such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have become widely used, adaptable, and acceptable devices to observe, assess, measure, and explore urban and natural environments. A drone’s relatively low cost and flexibility in the level of expertise required to operate it has enabled users from novice to industry professionals to adapt a malleable technology to various disciplines. This review examines the academic literature and maps how drones are currently being used in 93 rural and regional city councils in New South Wales, Australia. Through a systematic review of the academic literature and scrutiny of current drone use in these councils using publicly available information found on council websites, findings reveal potential uses of drone technology for local governments who want to engage with smart technology devices. We looked at how drones were being used in the management of the council’s environment; health and safety initiatives; infrastructure; planning; social and community programmes; and waste and recycling. These findings suggest that drone technology is increasingly being utilised in rural and regional areas. While the focus is on rural and regional New South Wales, a review of the academic literature and local council websites provides a snapshot of drone use examples that holds global relevance for local councils in urban and remote areas seeking to incorporate drone technology into their daily practice of city, town, or region governance. The landscapes of China’s multi-ethnic areas are rich in natural and cultural value, but they are threatened by homogenization and urbanization. This study aims to establish a method for identifying and classifying the landscape characters in China’s multi-ethnic areas to support the protection and sustainable development of the landscape in these areas. Taking the Miao Frontier Corridor as an example, the study optimized a parameterization method of landscape character assessment (LCA), integrated relevant cultural and natural elements, and used the K-means clustering algorithm to determine the landscape character types and regions of the Miao Frontier Corridor. The results show that (1) the natural conditions, ethnic exchanges, and historical institutions of the Miao Frontier Corridor have had a significant impact on its overall landscape; and (2) using ethnic group culture as a cultural element in LCA helps to reveal the unique cultural value of areas with different landscape characters. This study expands the LCA framework and applies it to multi-ethnic areas in China, thereby establishing a database that can serve as the basis for cross-regional landscape protection, management, and development planning in these areas. The research methods can be widely used in other multi-ethnic areas in China. Full article

The impacts of land use transition on ecological environment quality (EEQ) during China’s rapid urbanization have attracted growing concern. However, existing studies predominantly focus on single-scale analyses, neglecting scale effects and driving mechanisms of EEQ changes under the coupling of administrative units and grid scales. Therefore, this study selects Zhejiang Province—a representative rapidly transforming region in China—to establish a “type-process-ecological effect” analytical framework. Utilizing four-period (2005–2020) 30 m resolution land use data alongside natural and socio-economic factors, four spatial scales (city, county, township, and 5 km grid) were selected to systematically evaluate multi-scale impacts of land use transition on EEQ and their driving mechanisms. The research reveals that the spatial distribution, changing trends, and driving factors of EEQ all exhibit significant scale dependence. The county scale demonstrates the strongest spatial agglomeration and heterogeneity, making it the most appropriate core unit for EEQ management and planning. City and county scales generally show degradation trends, while township and grid scales reveal heterogeneous patterns of local improvement, reflecting micro-scale changes obscured at coarse resolutions. Expansive land transition including conversions of forest ecological land (FEL), water ecological land (WEL), and agricultural production land (APL) to industrial and mining land (IML) primarily drove EEQ degradation, whereas restorative ecological transition such as transformation of WEL and IML to grassland ecological land (GEL) significantly enhanced EEQ. Regarding driving mechanisms, natural factors (particularly NDVI and precipitation) dominate across all scales with significant interactive effects, while socio-economic factors primarily operate at macro scales. This study elucidates the scale complexity of land use transition impacts on ecological environments, providing theoretical and empirical support for developing scale-specific, typology-differentiated ecological governance and spatial planning policies. Over the last decade, the scientific community has increasingly focused on forest-based practices for human well-being (FBPW), a term that includes all forest activities (e.g., forest bathing, forest therapy, social outdoor initiatives) important for improving people’s health and emotional status. This paper aims to develop a quantitative literature review on FBPW based on big data analysis (text mining on Scopus title and abstract) and PRISMA evaluation. The two techniques facilitate investigations across different geographic areas (major areas and geographical regions) and allow a focus on various topics. The results of text mining highlight the prominence of publications on FBPW for the improvement of human health in East Asia (e.g., Japan and South Korea). Furthermore, some specific themes developed by the literature for each geographical area emerge: urban green areas, cities, and parks in Africa; sustainable forest management and planning in the Americas; empirical studies on physiological and psychological effects of FBPW in Asia; and forest management and FBPW in Europe. PRISMA indicates a gap in studies focused on the reciprocal influences of forest variables and well-being responses. An investigation of the main physiological indicators applied in the scientific literature for the theme is also developed. The main strengths and weaknesses of the method are discussed, with suggestions for potential future lines of research. Full article

The Mediterranean region, identified by scientists as a ‘climate hot spot’, is experiencing warmer and drier conditions, along with an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. One such extreme phenomena is droughts. The recent wildfires in this region are a concerning consequence of this phenomenon, causing severe environmental damage and transforming natural landscapes. However, droughts involve a two-way interaction: On the one hand, climate change and various human activities, such as urbanization and deforestation, influence the development and severity of droughts. On the other hand, droughts have a significant impact on various sectors, including ecology, agriculture, and the local economy. This study investigates drought dynamics in four Mediterranean countries, Greece, France, Italy, and Spain, each of which has experienced severe wildfire events in recent years. Using satellite-based Earth observation data, we monitored drought conditions across these regions over a five-year period that includes the dates of major wildfires. To support this analysis, we derived and assessed key indices: the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and Normalized Difference Drought Index (NDDI). High-resolution satellite imagery processed within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform enabled the spatial and temporal analysis of these indicators. Our findings reveal that, in all four study areas, peak drought conditions, as reflected in elevated NDDI values, were observed in the months leading up to wildfire outbreaks. This pattern underscores the potential of satellite-derived indices for identifying regional drought patterns and providing early signals of heightened fire risk. The application of GEE offered significant advantages, as it allows efficient handling of long-term and large-scale datasets and facilitates comprehensive spatial analysis. Our methodological framework contributes to a deeper understanding of regional drought variability and its links to extreme events; thus, it could be a valuable tool for supporting the development of adaptive management strategies. Ultimately, such approaches are vital for enhancing resilience, guiding water resource planning, and implementing early warning systems in fire-prone Mediterranean landscapes. Full article

Accurate forecasting of household waste generation is essential for sustainable urban planning and the development of data-driven environmental policies. Conventional statistical models, while simple and interpretable, often fail to capture the nonlinear and multidimensional relationships inherent in waste production patterns. This study proposes a machine learning-based regression framework utilizing Random Forest and XGBoost algorithms to predict annual household waste generation across four metropolitan regions in South Korea Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Jeju over the period from 2000 to 2023. Independent variables include demographic indicators (total population, working-age population, elderly population), economic indicators (Gross Regional Domestic Product), and regional identifiers encoded using One-Hot Encoding. A derived feature, elderly ratio, was introduced to reflect population aging. Model performance was evaluated using R2, RMSE, and MAE, with artificial noise added to simulate uncertainty. Random Forest demonstrated superior generalization and robustness to data irregularities, especially in data-scarce regions like Jeju. SHAP-based interpretability analysis revealed total population and GRDP as the most influential features. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating economic indicators in waste forecasting models, as demographic variables alone were insufficient for explaining waste dynamics. This approach provides valuable insights for policymakers and supports the development of adaptive, region-specific strategies for waste reduction and infrastructure investment. Full article

Landscape Zoning Strategies for Small Mountainous Towns: Insights from Yuqian Town in China

Small towns in mountainous regions face significant challenges in formulating effective landscape zoning strategies due to pronounced landscape fragmentation, which is driven by both the dominance of large-scale forest resources and the lack of coordination between administrative planning departments. To tackle this problem, this study focused on Yuqian, a quintessential small mountainous town in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The town’s layout was divided into a grid network measuring 70 m × 70 m. A two-step cluster process was employed using ArcGIS and SPSS software to analyze five landscape variables: altitude, slope, land use, heritage density, and visual visibility. Further, eCognition software’s semi-automated segmentation technique, complemented by manual adjustments, helped delineate landscape character types and areas. The overlay analysis integrated these areas with administrative village units, identifying four landscape character types across 35 character areas, which were recategorized into four planning and management zones: urban comprehensive service areas, agricultural and cultural tourism development areas, industrial development growth areas, and mountain forest ecological conservation areas. This result optimizes the current zoning types. These zones closely match governmental sustainable development zoning requirements. Based on these findings, we propose integrated landscape management and conservation strategies, including the cautious expansion of urban areas, leveraging agricultural and cultural tourism, ensuring industrial activities do not impact the natural and village environment adversely, and prioritizing ecological conservation in sensitive areas. This approach integrates spatial and administrative dimensions to enhance landscape connectivity and resource sustainability, providing key guidance for small town development in mountainous regions with unique environmental and cultural contexts.
