Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) is entering clinical dentistry more quickly than the professional, ethical, and regulatory frameworks intended to govern it. Responsible implementation depends not only on diagnostic performance but on trust, professional autonomy, and clear accountability—dimensions rarely examined across the different stakeholder groups who shape dental care. This study assessed perceptions of trustworthy AI, accountability, and regulatory preparedness among dental and non-dental stakeholders in Romania. Methods: A multidisciplinary cross-sectional survey using purposive, non-probability sampling, reported in accordance with the CROSS guideline, was administered to dental professionals, legal professionals, forensic physicians, and other healthcare stakeholders. The instrument addressed AI literacy, governance and accountability, ethics and transparency, and clinical implementation. Responses were compared across professional groups using chi-square and Kruskal–Wallis tests with Benjamini–Hochberg or Holm correction, and the questionnaire structure was examined through an exploratory psychometric assessment. Of 304 submissions, 287 were retained for analysis. Results: Agreement on ethical and governance safeguards was high (84–91%), including testing on diverse populations, independent auditing, and patient disclosure. Between-group differences concentrated in AI awareness, literacy, and educational exposure, as well as in governance and accountability, whereas ethics and transparency items showed broad consensus. Respondents attributed responsibility for AI-related outcomes to clinicians (77.4%), developers (49.5%), and healthcare institutions (28.3%). Only a minority reported AI Act awareness (32.8%) or previous participation in AI-related courses or conferences (25.2%). Conclusions: Romanian stakeholders included in this multidisciplinary sample share strong normative expectations for trustworthy clinical AI but report limited regulatory awareness and educational exposure. These findings support the development of structured AI preparedness initiatives and clearer governance frameworks reflecting stakeholders’ perceptions of responsibility as extending across clinicians, developers, and healthcare institutions. Professional certification before clinical AI use emerged as a specific stakeholder preference. Full article

Background/Objectives: Medico-legal preparedness is relevant throughout dental education because awareness develops before independent clinical responsibility is assumed. This study examined malpractice awareness, self-perceived preparedness, legal awareness and defensive-practice tendencies among Romanian dental students, residents and dentists. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and June 2026 among 176 participants from the Faculty of Dentistry and its associated professional community in Craiova, Romania. The author-developed questionnaire was completed online (n = 134) or on paper at a professional conference (n = 42). Associations were assessed using non-parametric tests, ordinal logistic regression and robust linear regression. A sensitivity analysis excluded early-year students. Results: Respondents demonstrated moderate legal awareness (mean 3.29 of 5), whilst only 8.0% felt well or very well prepared to manage a malpractice-related situation. In the main model, previous legal training was associated with greater preparedness (adjusted odds ratio 2.52, 95% CI 1.03–6.15), as were resident status and professional clinical experience. In the clinically exposed subgroup (n = 68), practising dentists reported greater preparedness than clinical-year students, whereas familiarity with malpractice and paper-based participation were associated with stronger defensive-practice tendencies. Conclusions: Awareness of medico-legal issues is present across dental education, but perceived preparedness remains limited. The findings support longitudinal, applied medico-legal education and require cautious interpretation because early-year and clinically experienced respondents evaluated partly different aspects of the same phenomenon. The practice of contemporary dentistry requires not only technical skills but also the development of soft skills, such as communication, empathy, and ethical and professional values. Although the importance of these skills is increasingly recognized, the perceptions of dental students in Romania regarding their relevance to their future professional practice remain insufficiently explored. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the perceptions of final-year students at the Faculty of Dentistry in Iași regarding the importance of soft skills, in relation to their demographic characteristics, professional motivations, and preferences regarding their future practice settings, as well as to identify distinct profiles through cluster analysis. Material and Methods: The study included 205 students in their fourth through sixth years at the Faculty of Dentistry in Iași, who anonymously completed a 26-item questionnaire rated on a Likert scale from 1 to 5. The statistical analysis included the chi-square test, Ward’s method, and k-means clustering. Results: Ethical and professional values, artistic skills, and empathy were most frequently rated as “very important.” Female students assigned significantly higher scores than male students to empathy, ethical and professional values, personal characteristics, and communication (p < 0.05–0.001). Professional independence, financial stability, and professional prestige were the main motivations for career choice. Cluster analysis identified four distinct profiles, with significant differences based on gender, professional motivations, and preferences regarding future practice. Conclusions: Students place a high value on soft skills, with differences based on gender and professional profile. The results support the integration of these skills into university education, to complement specialized clinical training. Full article

Background/ Objectives: Selecting an intraoral scanner (IOS) has evolved into a complex clinical decision that extends beyond technical performance alone. This study aimed to investigate the clinical, technical, educational, and organizational factors influencing intraoral scanner selection among dentists, evaluate awareness of ISO specifications and evidence-based criteria, and propose a conceptual framework to support evidence-based technology selection. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among dentists practicing in Greece. A total of 86 questionnaires were returned from 271 invited participants (response rate: 31.73%). Valid sample sizes varied across analyses according to item applicability and analyzable responses. The questionnaire assessed demographic and professional characteristics, intraoral scanner use, selection criteria, awareness of ISO specifications, educational background, and evidence-related factors. Composite indices were developed to evaluate the principal decision-making dimensions. Results: Technical and clinical performance-related criteria received the highest importance ratings in intraoral scanner selection. Although participants generally reported good perceived knowledge of intraoral scanners, only 35.7% reported awareness of ISO specifications. Dentists familiar with ISO standards assigned significantly greater importance to specification-related and safety-related criteria, suggesting an association between reported ISO awareness and greater emphasis on specification- and safety-related selection criteria. Continuing professional education represented the predominant source of knowledge acquisition. Based on the integration of these findings, the EBIOS Pilot Framework (Evidence-Based Intraoral Scanner Selection Framework) is proposed as a preliminary conceptual synthesis of factors potentially relevant to evidence-informed intraoral scanner selection. Conclusions: The findings suggest that intraoral scanner selection may be understood as a multidimensional decision-making process involving technical performance, scientific evidence, professional education, and standardized quality criteria. The proposed EBIOS Pilot Framework provides a preliminary conceptual basis for future validation and refinement in larger, independent populations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Basic sciences form the conceptual foundation of dentistry, yet their delivery in dental curricula varies worldwide. As demographic shifts, growing healthcare complexity and scientific advances continue to reshape the dental profession, renewed attention to how these subjects are taught has become essential. This comparative narrative review aims to examine different approaches to basic science education in dentistry, exploring variation in curricular structure, depth, timing and pedagogical strategies across diverse dental schools. Particular emphasis is placed on models of vertical, horizontal and spiral integration, the alignment of basic sciences with clinical training and the implications of instructional design for long-term knowledge retention and professional competence. Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar were searched from November 2025 to June 2026 using terms related to dental education, curriculum integration and geographic regions. Sources were selected based on predefined relevance criteria rather than through systematic screening. Published literature was supplemented by structured outreach to faculty representatives using a standardised set of questions. Of the 25 dental schools contacted, nine responded, and five were included. Results: Across the programs examined, a structure of approximately two preclinical years followed by clinical training remained the most common. Early clinical exposure appeared to strengthen student confidence and professional identity. Heavy workload and curricular overload were recurring challenges in the dental curricula examined. Conclusions: The findings suggest that although curriculum integration is widely recognised as essential, no single model appears to be universally superior. Its effectiveness likely depends on the quality of implementation and faculty coordination. However, the lack of independent evaluation studies limits the ability to draw conclusions about the long-term effectiveness of different educational approaches. The review highlights the need for independent and systematic evaluation of dental curricula. Full article

Background and Objectives: This scoping review aims to synthesize evidence on clinical and non-clinical factors associated with malpractice claims in implant dentistry and to identify strategies for prevention. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines, including peer-reviewed studies published within the last 10 years. Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Clinical causes of litigation included improper implant placement, inferior alveolar nerve injury, lack of osseointegration, peri-implant infection, and the use of inappropriate or outdated implant systems. Non-clinical factors included inadequate informed consent, poor documentation, deviation from the treatment plan, and ineffective communication. Conclusions: Malpractice in implant dentistry is largely preventable. Risk reduction depends on accurate diagnosis, careful treatment planning, adherence to surgical principles, and clear patient communication with appropriate informed consent. Full article

Background/Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming healthcare and has emerged as a promising tool in pediatric dentistry. This narrative review examines the methodological foundations, current applications, limitations, and future directions of AI in pediatric dental practice. Methods: A structured literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant English-language publications from database inception through to May 2026, using predefined search terms and eligibility criteria. Following screening and full-text assessment, 72 unique publications were retained for the narrative synthesis. Results: AI applications in pediatric dentistry include early childhood caries detection and risk prediction, dental plaque assessment, identification of mesiodens and supernumerary teeth, dental age estimation, automated tooth detection, fissure-sealant evaluation, and craniofacial growth prediction. Several imaging-based models demonstrated performance comparable to experienced clinicians. However, many studies relied on retrospective, single-center datasets and lacked external or prospective validation. Additional concerns included algorithmic bias, data privacy, limited interpretability, and infrastructure requirements. Conclusions: AI has considerable potential to improve diagnostic efficiency, consistency, and personalized preventive care in pediatric dentistry. However, it should be used as a clinical decision-support tool rather than a replacement for professional judgment. Future research should prioritize prospective multicenter validation, multimodal and explainable systems, standardized reporting, and ethical clinical implementation. Full article

Background: The widespread use of online review platforms has transformed how patients evaluate healthcare providers and has created a valuable source of patient-generated feedback on healthcare quality. Negative online reviews provide valuable insights into patient experiences and sources of dissatisfaction. This narrative review aimed to synthesize the main themes and concerns expressed in negative online patient reviews across healthcare and dentistry and to explore recurring patterns reported in the available literature. Methods: A narrative literature search was conducted between January 2015 and May 2026. Results: Twenty-two studies were included in the narrative synthesis. Negative online reviews reflected multiple dimensions of the patient experience, including interpersonal, communication, organizational, financial, and clinical concerns. Although the relative prominence of these themes varied across healthcare settings and specialties, dental studies more frequently emphasized treatment expectations, professional trust, and perceived value for money. Conclusions: The findings indicate that patient dissatisfaction expressed in negative online reviews is multidimensional and cannot be interpreted solely through clinical outcomes. Rather than establishing the relative importance of different determinants of patient satisfaction, this review characterizes the themes most commonly expressed in negative online reviews. As a complementary source of patient-generated insights, online reviews may inform patient-centered quality improvement initiatives and support improvements in healthcare service delivery. The present work proposes EGT-UNet, an innovative loss optimization mechanism based on Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) aimed at pediatric panoramic tooth segmentations. In the absence of a large set of high-quality images in the current literature, we developed a novel pediatric panoramic image database, including 1269 images from Ordu University Faculty of Dentistry. The dataset includes subjects aged 3–14, where 67% are males and 33% are females. The annotation of all images was done at the pixel level by a professional orthodontist with a two-fold verification process. In order to prevent data leakage, the dataset was split at the subject level into training/validation (85%) and independent test (15%) sets. Data in the training set were divided into folds for five-fold cross-validation. From a structural point of view, EGT-UNet is an improved version of U-Net, equipped with the following modules: Squeeze-and-Excitation blocks, Attention Gates, and a dilated convolutional module mimicking Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling. The main novelty of the proposed approach involves the application of the dynamic change in loss weights. Specifically, in our work, the fusion of three losses—Dice, Focal Tversky and Boundary—was dynamically tuned via replicator dynamics using task-specific fitness functions. The difference with traditional loss-weighting methods is that in the latter case, fixed weights are applied. To evaluate the effect of each component of the EGT-UNet, we conducted an ablation study of six architectures varying in terms of hybrid loss function and dynamic/static weight tuning. Using the independent test dataset, we observed a similar performance level of all models with Dice scores ~0.93. Our best model, called “EGT Aggressive”, achieved Dice = 0.931 ± 0.044, IoU = 0.873 ± 0.066, and Boundary Dice = 0.631 ± 0.064. Importantly, this model demonstrated a statistically significant superiority over the baseline network according to region-related metrics and boundary metrics (Wilcoxon p < 0.05). In computational studies, we revealed an increased model robustness when dealing with highly complex mixed dentition images. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into modern dental practice, particularly in diagnostics, radiographic analysis, treatment planning, and practice management. Despite the rapid advancement of AI-based technologies, evidence regarding dentists’ attitudes toward AI in Central and Eastern Europe remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate Polish dentists’ attitudes toward artificial intelligence in contemporary dental practice and to investigate differences in AI acceptance according to sex, age group, and dental specialty. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online questionnaire-based study was conducted among licensed dentists practicing in Poland. An anonymous questionnaire comprising 15 attitude statements rated on a five-point Likert scale was distributed through professional social media groups. The survey assessed attitudes toward the use of AI in clinical, diagnostic, and administrative aspects of dentistry. Statistical analyses were performed using Statistica 16.0. Group comparisons were conducted using the Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis test with Benjamini–Hochberg false discovery rate correction. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results: A total of 183 completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.900). The overall acceptance of AI was moderate (mean score: 3.18 ± 0.73). The highest levels of agreement were observed for the perceived potential of AI to improve dental practice management (mean = 4.05) and for general openness toward AI implementation in dentistry (mean = 4.05). Respondents also expressed a high willingness to use AI for generating clinical documentation (mean = 3.69). In contrast, the lowest acceptance was observed for statements suggesting that AI could replace dentists (mean: 1.36). Within the study sample, men demonstrated significantly higher overall AI acceptance than women (p < 0.001). Significant differences were also observed between age groups and dental specialties. Orthodontists demonstrated the highest AI acceptance among the surveyed specialties; however, these findings should be interpreted as exploratory because of unequal subgroup sizes. After FDR correction, significant differences between age groups remained only for selected questionnaire items. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this convenience sample, the findings suggest that Polish dentists generally perceive artificial intelligence as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for clinicians. Acceptance was greatest for administrative and organizational applications of AI, whereas autonomous clinical decision-making received substantially lower support. These findings suggest that the successful implementation of AI in dentistry should prioritize assistive technologies that enhance clinical workflows while preserving the central role of the dentist in patient care. Background: Molar–incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a common developmental enamel defect that presents important diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in pediatric dentistry. Differences in dental professionals’ knowledge and clinical confidence may affect patient care. Aim: To evaluate dental professionals’ awareness, diagnostic confidence, clinical management, referral practices, and training related to MIH. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate pooled estimates, with subgroup analyses by geographic region, dental specialty, and risk of bias. Results: Thirty-six observational studies including over 10,000 dental professionals were included. Awareness of MIH diagnostic criteria was moderate (72.1%) and higher among pediatric dentists than general dental practitioners. Diagnostic confidence (67.5%) and comfort in providing treatment (64.1%) were suboptimal, particularly among non-specialists. Most respondents perceived a distinct caries pattern in MIH-affected teeth (84.8%), while referral to pediatric dentists was inconsistent (52.5%). Approximately 80% of participants reported a need for additional MIH-related training. Substantial heterogeneity was observed across analyses. Conclusions: Despite moderate awareness of MIH, important gaps persist in diagnostic confidence, clinical management, and referral practices. Strengthening undergraduate education, continuing professional development, and structured referral pathways is essential to improve early diagnosis, appropriate management, and outcomes for children affected by MIH, highlighting the pivotal role of paediatric dentists in interdisciplinary care. Background/Objectives: Collaboration between medical and dental professionals is essential for comprehensive, patient-centred healthcare, yet the two fields often remain separate in education and practice. This study explored attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of interprofessional relationships among medical and dental faculty and students at a Croatian university. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted. Thirty-nine participants, including faculty members and students from medicine and dentistry, were interviewed. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes related to interprofessional perceptions and collaboration. Results: Participants generally reported mutual respect, although their accounts revealed subtle hierarchies, persistent stereotypes, and implicit biases. Overt animosity was rare, often limited to humour, though instances of disrespect and status differentiation were described. Educational collaboration was minimal, with siloed curricula and few structured initiatives, while clinical collaboration was described as largely case-dependent and centred on referral rather than coordinated care. Personal exposure to the other profession mitigated some biases, suggesting that social proximity influences professional perceptions. Conclusions: Despite overall respect, participants identified structural, cultural, and educational factors that limited opportunities for interprofessional engagement within the studied setting. The findings suggest that creating opportunities for structured interprofessional learning and collaborative clinical practice may strengthen professional understanding, support more integrated models of care, and ultimately contribute to improved patient-centred healthcare. Background/Objectives: Ankyloglossia diagnosis and management remain widely debated in dentistry, with variability reported in clinical decision-making and treatment approaches. Limited international evidence exists comparing how dental professionals diagnose and manage this condition in early childhood. This study aimed to compare the knowledge, diagnostic criteria, and clinical management of ankyloglossia among dental professionals in six countries and to assess whether shared diagnostic and management approaches exist for babies (≤6 months) and infants (>6 months). Methods: A multicountry cross-sectional study was conducted using a validated 27-item online questionnaire distributed between February 2023 and February 2025 to dental professionals in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Ecuador, and Chile. Participants included paediatric dentists, oral surgeons, general dentists, and other dental specialists. Only fully completed questionnaires were analyzed. Primary outcomes included self-reported diagnostic practices, use of classification systems, and management strategies for ankyloglossia. Secondary outcomes included professional training, interdisciplinary collaboration, surgical techniques, and pain management practices. Results: A total of 1188 dental professionals participated. Overall, 80.7% reported routinely examining the lingual frenulum, while 42.4% used formal classification systems. Tongue mobility assessment was the most commonly reported diagnostic method, with significant variation across countries and professional groups (p < 0.001). Specific training in diagnosis was reported by 67.2% of participants, whereas 50.6% reported treatment training, with marked inter-country differences (p < 0.001). Surgical intervention was the most commonly reported management strategy (38.7%), particularly in babies ≤ 6 months, with frenotomy/frenulotomy being the predominant procedure. Considerable variability was observed in surgical techniques, pain management, and recommendations for adjunctive therapies. Conclusions: Substantial international variability exists in the diagnosis, classification, and management of ankyloglossia among dental professionals. These findings highlight gaps in training and the absence of standardized, evidence-based clinical guidelines, underscoring the need for consensus-driven protocols to support consistent and multidisciplinary clinical care. Background/Objectives: Large language models have created new pathways for patients to access health information, yet little is known about how the general population uses these conversational artificial intelligence (AI) tools for oral health concerns. This study investigated patterns of AI use as a source of oral health information, the nature of data shared with these systems, users’ perceptions, and the impact on dental care-seeking behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults from Bihor County, Romania, using a structured 16-item online questionnaire distributed via social media, with eligibility restricted to individuals who had previously used conversational AI for oral health information. The final sample comprised 393 valid responses from this self-selected group of users. Fisher’s exact test and Z-tests with Bonferroni correction were applied (α = 0.05). Results: Most participants were female (68.2%), university-educated (52.9%), and lived in an urban setting (88.3%). Significant differences in patterns of AI use for oral health information were identified according to age, sex, and living environment (p < 0.001). Younger participants used AI more frequently, while older individuals perceived the information as less clear. The vast majority used AI for informational or preliminary guidance purposes, with very few treating it as a substitute for professional opinion. A relevant subset shared visual data (intraoral photographs or radiographs) with AI systems, raising data privacy concerns. Rural participants more frequently delayed dental visits and less often discussed AI-derived information with their dentist compared to urban participants. Conclusions: When used by the public as a source of oral health information, AI is increasingly adopted, with adoption shaped by age, sex, and socioeconomic context. These findings concern only this informational use and do not extend to other applications of AI in dentistry, such as diagnostic support, image analysis, or clinical decision-making. Dental professionals should proactively engage patients about their use of AI for oral health information to ensure that digitally obtained content is appropriately contextualized. Full article

Background/Objectives: Digital triage systems are increasingly used in dentistry to support patient access and improve service efficiency, particularly in academic and public healthcare settings. However, limited evidence exists on how these systems function in practice from the perspectives of both patients and providers. This study aimed to explore patients’ and staff members’ experiences, perceptions, and expectations of a digital dental triage system at a teaching dental hospital. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at the Dental Teaching Hospital of Umm Al-Qura University (DTH-UQU), Saudi Arabia. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 25 participants, including dental professionals, administrative staff, and patients who had recently used the digital triage system. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis approach. Results: Analysis identified six interconnected themes. Patients generally found the system easy to use and consistent with their digital habits, yet this usability did not translate into satisfaction due to limited communication, post-registration silence, and unclear care pathways. Staff emphasized clinical accuracy, educational requirements, and capacity constraints as key drivers of triage decisions that were often invisible to patients. Communication breakdowns, misclassification, duplicate registrations, and unmet expectations emerged as central challenges, contributing to workflow inefficiencies. Participants suggested that improvements focused on enhanced communication, guided data entry, system integration, and expanded teledentistry functionality. Conclusions: The effectiveness of digital dental triage systems depends not only on usability but also on transparent communication, alignment with institutional capacity, and integration within broader care pathways.
