This exploratory study primarily aims to identify and characterise profiles of digital competence and information evaluation among secondary-school students, considering their academic performance in Geography and History. It also examines gender differences in online information practices and associations between Internet use, academic performance, and information-searching and evaluation skills, including the recognition of fake news and hate speech. A quantitative methodology was employed, combining descriptive, inferential, and correlation analyses with two-step cluster analysis. The non-probabilistic convenience sample comprised 72 third- and fourth-year secondary-school students from a public rural school in Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain). Cluster analysis identified three provisional profiles: a larger profile characterised by lower reported technical competence and moderate academic performance; a second profile with higher reported digital competence and notable academic achievement; and a third combining strong academic performance with lower reported digital competence. Information-searching skills, technical knowledge, and fake news detection were the variables contributing most to profile differentiation, whereas time spent online had the lowest importance. Fake news detection was also significantly associated with academic performance. Gender comparisons showed higher reported technical competence and information-searching and verification skills among male students, while differences in fake news and hate speech recognition were not statistically significant. Given the small, single-school convenience sample and reliance on self-reported measures, these findings should be interpreted cautiously and not generalised beyond this context. Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight trajectories in complex environments are often affected by multiple uncertainties, making accurate prediction challenging. To address this issue, this study proposes a probabilistic four-dimensional (4D) trajectory prediction model based on Brownian bridge motion. The UAV’s flight from mission start to endpoint is modeled as a Brownian bridge stochastic process with endpoint constraints, where the mean function sequence is constructed from path planning results and UAV performance parameters. To incorporate operational feasibility, the concept of the spatiotemporal reachable domain from time geography is introduced to dynamically constrain reachable positions, while a truncated Brownian bridge distribution is used to model probabilistic positions in three-dimensional space. A simulation platform in a realistic 3D geographical environment is developed to validate the model. Case studies show that the proposed method achieves dynamic probabilistic trajectory prediction under mission constraints with strong adaptability and practicality. The results provide theoretical support and technical reference for trajectory planning, conflict detection, and flight risk assessment in the pre-tactical phase. Full article

The possibility of moving objects accessing different types of points of interest (POIs) at specific times is not always the same, so quantitative time geography research needs to consider the actual POI semantic information, including POI attributes and time information. Existing methods allocate probabilities to position points, including POIs, based on space–time position information, but ignore the semantic information of POIs. The accessing activities of moving objects in different POIs usually have obvious time characteristics, such as dinner usually taking place around 6 PM. In this paper, building upon existing probabilistic time geographic methods, we introduce POI attributes and their time preferences to propose a probabilistic time geographic model for assigning probabilities to POI accesses. This model provides a comprehensive measure of position probability with space–time uncertainty between known trajectory points, incorporating time, space, and semantic information, thereby avoiding data gaps caused by single-dimensional information. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

Animal movements are realizations of complex spatiotemporal processes. Central to these processes are the varied environmental contexts in which animals move, which fundamentally impact the movement trajectories of individuals at fine spatial and temporal scales. An emerging perspective in time geography is the direct examination of the influence that varying contexts may have on observed movements. An approach that considers environmental context can yield actionable information for wildlife management, planning, and conservation; for instance, identifying areas of probable occupancy by an animal may improve the efficiency of fieldwork. This research develops the first known practical application of a new cost-distance-based, probabilistic voxel space–time prism (CDBPSTP) in efforts to more realistically characterize the unobserved habitat occupancies of animals occurring between known positions provided by location-aware technologies. The CDBPSTP method is applied to trajectory data collected for a group of red deer (Cervus elaphus) tracked near Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. As a demonstration of the added value from examining how context influences movement, CDBPSTP habitat occupancy results are compared to the earlier PSTP method in context with empirical and theoretical understandings of red deer habitat preference and space-use behaviors. This comparison reveals that with CDBPSTP, variation present in the mover’s environment is explicitly considered as an influence on the mover’s probable path and occupancies between observations of its location. With the increasing availability of high-resolution geolocational and associated environmental data, this study highlights the potential for CDBPSTP to be leveraged as a broadly applicable tool in animal movement analysis. The acquisition of human trajectories facilitates movement data analytics and location-based services, but gaps in trajectories limit the extent in which many tracking datasets can be utilized. We present a model to estimate place visit probabilities at time points within a gap, based on empirical mobility patterns derived from past trajectories. Different from previous models, our model makes use of prior information from historical data to build a chain of empirically biased random walks. Therefore, it is applicable to gaps of varied lengths and can be fitted to empirical data conveniently. In this model, long gaps are broken into a chain of multiple episodes according to past patterns, while short episodes are estimated with anisotropic location transition probabilities. Experiments show that our model is able to hit almost 60% of the ground truth for short gaps of several minutes and over 40% for longer gaps up to weeks. In comparison, existing models are only able to hit less than 10% and 1% for short and long gaps, respectively. Visit probability distributions estimated by the model are useful for generating paths in data gaps, and have potential for disaggregated movement data analysis in uncertain environments. Probabilistic time geography uses a fixed distance threshold for the definition of the encounter events of moving objects. However, because of the distance-decay effect, different distances within the fixed threshold ensure that the encounter events do not always have the same possibility, and, therefore, the quantitative probabilistic time geography analysis needs to consider the actual distance-decay coefficient (DDC). Thus, this paper introduces the DDC and proposes a new encounter probability measure model that takes into account the distance-decay effect. Given two positions of a pair of moving objects, the traditional encounter probability model is that if the distance between the two positions does not exceed a given threshold, the encounter event may occur, and its probability is equal to the product of the probabilities of the two moving objects in their respective positions. Furthermore, the probability of the encounter at two given positions is multiplied by the DDC in the proposed model, in order to express the influence of the distance-decay effect on the encounter probability. Finally, the validity of the proposed model is verified by an experiment, which uses the tracking data of wild zebras to calculate the encounter probability, and compares it with the former method. This paper presents a study that analyses the effect of financing costs on grid parity in photovoltaic (PV) installations by applying a probabilistic methodology. Three different case studies, located in Spain, have been considered, with 500 kW, 50 kW and 5 kW grid-connected PV generators. The technical and economic calculations were performed, considering the interest rate, yield across the Spanish geography, and PV module cost as parameters. The Monte Carlo method was applied to consider the full probabilistic range of values given to the different variables. The goal of this study was to determine, for the studied cases, the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) and the internal rate of return by considering realistic values of the variables. A success rate parameter was calculated, which determined the likelihood of the number of times that the LCOE was below the retail cost of electricity. All the cases were evaluated by applying 10,000 iterations, considering the standard deviations and means defined. Full article

Based on probabilistic time-geography, the encounter between two moving objects is random. The quantitative analysis of the probability of encounter needs to consider the actual geographical environment. The existing encounter probability algorithm is based on homogeneous space, ignoring the wide range of obstacles and their impact on encounter events. Based on this, this paper introduces obstacle factors, proposes encounter events that are constrained by obstacles, and constructs a model of the probability of encounters of moving objects based on the influence of obstacles on visual perception with the line-of-sight view analysis principle. In realistic obstacle space, this method provides a quantitative basis for predicting the encountering possibility of two mobile objects and the largest possible encounter location. Finally, the validity of the model is verified by experimental results. The model uses part of the Wuhan digital elevation model (DEM) data to calculate the encounter probability of two moving objects on it, and analyzes the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of these probabilities.
