Amid ongoing societal development, tourists’ travel behavior patterns have been undergoing substantial transformations, and understanding their evolution has emerged as a key area of scholarly interest. Taking Beijing as a case study, this research aims to uncover the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of tourist flows and their underlying driving mechanisms. Based on digital footprint relational data, a dual-perspective analytical framework—“tourist perception–tourist flow network”—is constructed. By integrating the center-of-gravity model, social network analysis, and regression models, the study systematically examines the dynamic spatial structure of tourist flows in Beijing from 2012 to 2024. The findings reveal that in the post-pandemic period, Beijing tourists place greater emphasis on the cultural connotation and experiential aspects of destinations. The gravitational center of tourist flows remains relatively stable, with core historical and cultural blocks retaining strong appeal, though a slight shift has occurred due to policy influences and emerging attractions. The evolution of the spatial network structure reveals that tourism flows have become more dispersed, while the influence of core scenic spots continues to intensify. Government policy orientation, tourism information retrieval, and the agglomeration of tourism resources significantly promote the structure of tourist flows, whereas the general level of tourism resources exerts no notable influence. These findings offer theoretical insights and practical guidance for the sustainable development and regional coordination of tourism in Beijing, and provide a valuable reference for the spatial restructuring of urban tourism in the post-COVID-19 era. The mental and physical health of college students, especially in urban environments like Shanghai, is crucial given the high academic and urban stressors, which were intensified by the COVID-19 lockdown. Prior research has shown gender differences in health impacts during public health crises, with females often more vulnerable to mental health issues. Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively assess the physical and psychological health of Chinese college students post-lockdown, focusing on the relationship between stress, anxiety, depression, sleep patterns, and physical health, with a particular emphasis on gender differences. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 116 students in Shanghai, utilizing psychological scales (HAMA, IPAQ, PSQI, SDS, FS 14, PSS, SF-36) and physical fitness tests (resting heart rate, blood pressure, hand grip, forced vital capacity, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, one-minute sit-up test and the one-minute squat test, single-leg stand test with eyes closed), to analyze health and behavior during the pandemic lockdown. All students have undergone the same life habits during the pandemic. Results: The HAMA scores indicated no significant levels of physical or mental anxiety. The PSS results (42.45 ± 8.93) reflected a high overall stress level. Furthermore, the PSQI scores (5.4 ± 2.91) suggested that the participants experienced mild insomnia. The IPAQ scores indicated higher levels of job-related activity (1261.49 ± 2144.58), transportation activity (1253.65 ± 987.57), walking intensity (1580.78 ± 1412.20), and moderate-intensity activity (1353.03 ± 1675.27) among college students following the lockdown. Hand grip strength (right) (p = 0.001), sit-and-reach test (p = 0.001), standing long jump (p = 0.001), and HAMA total score (p = 0.033) showed significant differences between males and females. Three principal components were identified in males: HAMA, FS14, and PSQI, explaining a total variance of 70.473%. Similarly, three principal components were extracted in females: HAMA, PSQI, and FS14, explaining a total variance of 69.100%. Conclusions: Our study underscores the complex interplay between physical activity (PA), mental health, and quality of life, emphasizing the need for gender-specific interventions. The persistent high stress, poor sleep quality, and reduced PA levels call for a reorganized teaching schedule to enhance student well-being without increasing academic pressure. Full article

Since the early 21st century, urban shrinkage has become a significant global phenomenon. Dongguan, in Guangdong Province, China, is known as a “world factory”. It experienced notable urban shrinkage following the 2008 financial crisis. However, the city demonstrated remarkable recovery and ongoing development in subsequent years. On that basis, this study focuses on the following three points: (1) identifying the spatiotemporal factors contributing to the growth and shrinkage of manufacturing cities, taking Dongguan as an example; (2) explaining the influencing factors of the growth and shrinkage of Dongguan City during three critical periods, 2008–2014 (post-crisis), 2015–2019 (as machinery replaced human work), and 2020–2023 (the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery); and (3) selecting representative towns and streets for on-site observation and investigation, analyzing the measures they have taken to cope with growth and shrinkage during different periods. The key findings include the following: (1) The spatial dynamics of growth and shrinkage in Dongguan show significant temporal patterns, with traditional manufacturing areas shrinking from 2008 to 2014, central urban areas recovering from 2015 to 2019, and renewed shrinkage from 2020 to 2023. However, some regions maintained stability through strategic innovations. (2) Various factors, particularly industrial upgrading and technological innovation, drove the urban dynamics, enhancing economic resilience. (3) The case study of Houjie Town revealed successful adaptive mechanisms supported by policy while facing challenges like labor mismatches and inadequate R&D investment. This research offers insights for improving urban resilience and promoting sustainable development in Dongguan. Full article

Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia is a disabling psychiatric condition, affecting around 1% of people worldwide. It has been ranked among the ten most disabling conditions globally. Alongside the psychological and social burdens imposed on individuals suffering from this disease, there are also serious complications regarding the physical health of these patients. Pneumonia is a significant cause of death in patients with schizophrenia. This group of patients also has a higher risk of developing pneumonia and all-cause mortality compared to those without schizophrenia, along with an increased overall mortality rate. A retrospective study revealed that advanced age, underweight, smoking, and the use of high-dose atypical antipsychotics increase the risk of pneumonia-related mortality in hospitalized patients. Our study aims to examine differences in factors associated with pneumonia in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to identify potential changes in clinical characteristics and outcomes. Materials and Methods: This is an observational, retrospective analysis, based on the review of medical records of psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to the DSM-5 criteria. Patients were selected according to the following criteria: both schizophrenia and pneumonia diagnoses, hospitalized in Spitalul Clinic de Psihiatrie si Neurologie Brasov during 1 March 2018–1 March 2020, and 1 March 2022–1 March 2024, respectively. Results: A total of 27 patients met the inclusion criteria; 13 patients (48%) were in the pre-pandemic group and 14 patients (52%) in the post-pandemic group. Contrary to other reports, our results showed relatively low pneumonia rates in hospitalized schizophrenia patients (1.02% pre-pandemic and 1.63% post-pandemic), and rates were higher in female patients (61.54% pre-pandemic and 71.43% post-pandemic). Post-pandemic, most cases (42.86%) were registered during summer, in a schizophrenia population with mostly urban residence and with lower smoking rates than the pre-pandemic group. Physical restraints were, however, more frequently utilized in the post-pandemic group. Conclusions: Pneumonia risk factors might register a change in the post-pandemic years. Polypharmacy and physical restraints are probably underestimated risk factors for pneumonia in schizophrenia patients, while a multidisciplinary approach and preventive measures might exert a protective role. In the context of macroeconomic recovery and accelerating digital transformation in the post-pandemic era, the hotel industry in China is undergoing profound structural changes. This research investigates the core competencies required for hotel managers to navigate these challenges. Data was collected via a quantitative survey involving a structured questionnaire, was conducted among hotel managers in Shanghai, China, resulting in 404 valid responses. Employing exploratory factor analysis using SPSS, this study identifies seven key competency dimensions encompassing 36 ranked items, including interpersonal communication, leadership, operational knowledge, human resource management, financial analysis, technology, and administrative management. The results show that economic recovery has brought new opportunities but also challenges to the hotel industry, and that managers must possess a diverse set of core competencies to adapt to the demanding new market changes. The novelty of this research lies in its empirical grounding and its focus on the intersection of digitalization and economic recovery within China’s hotel industry. It pioneers a dynamic strategic competency framework tailored to the evolving demands of the hotel industry during a period of economic volatility, providing empirical evidence and advice for optimizing the industry’s talent training systems. Simultaneously, it brings a new perspective for dealing with the recovery path for the hotel enterprises in other urban and travel destinations, aiming to promote industry sustainability and competitive advantages. Future research could extend the proposed framework by exploring its applicability across different cultural and economic contexts. Full article

Walking and cycling, as active modes of transportation, play a vital role in advancing sustainable urban mobility by reducing emissions and improving public health. However, widespread adoption faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, safety concerns, socio-cultural barriers, and policy limitations. This study systematically reviewed 56 peer-reviewed articles from 2004 to 2024, across 30 countries across five continents, employing the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) framework to identify the main drivers of walking and cycling behaviours. Findings highlight that the lack of dedicated infrastructure, inadequate enforcement of road safety measures, personal and traffic safety concerns, and social stigmas collectively hinder active mobility. Strategic interventions such as developing integrated cycling networks, financial incentives, urban planning initiatives, and behavioural change programs have promoted increased engagement in walking and cycling. Enhancing urban mobility further requires investment in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, improved integration with public transportation, the implementation of traffic-calming measures, and public education campaigns. Post-pandemic initiatives to establish new pedestrian and cycling spaces offer a unique opportunity to establish enduring changes that support active transportation. The study suggests expanding protected cycling lanes and integrating pedestrian pathways with public transit systems to strengthen safety and accessibility. Additionally, leveraging digital tools can enhance mobility planning and coordination. Future research is needed to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in enhancing mobility analysis, supporting the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, and informing transport policies that integrate gender perspectives to better understand long-term behavioural changes. Coordinated policy efforts and targeted investments can lead to more equitable transportation access, support sustainability goals, and alleviate urban traffic congestion. Full article

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in healthcare systems, especially in ensuring continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases. Rehabilitation services, essential for recovery following SARS-CoV-2 infection, were among the most disrupted. This exploratory study aimed to assess Romanian patients’ perceptions of the accessibility and quality of post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services, focusing on individuals with chronic conditions. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted over a 12-month period in 2024. Data were collected from 76 adult patients diagnosed with at least one chronic condition (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and with confirmed prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most participants were recruited during outpatient specialty consultations, with a smaller number included from hospital settings, all located in Bucharest. A structured questionnaire was administered by the principal investigator after obtaining informed consent. Quantitative data were analyzed using non-parametric methods following confirmation of non-normal distribution via the Shapiro–Wilk test (p < 0.05). Satisfaction scores were reported as medians with interquartile ranges (IQR), and group comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including thematic analysis of open-ended responses. Results: Patient satisfaction with rehabilitation services was consistently low. The median satisfaction scores [IQR] were accessibility 1.0 [0.0–2.0], quality of services 0.0 [0.0–4.0], staff empathy 0.0 [0.0–5.0], and perceived effectiveness 0.0 [0.0–5.0]. The median score for perceived difficulties in access was 1.0 [1.0–2.0], indicating widespread barriers. No statistically significant differences were observed between urban and rural participants or across chronic disease categories. Thematic analysis (n = 65) revealed key concerns including lack of publicly funded services, cost barriers, limited physician referral, service scarcity in rural areas, and demand for home-based rehabilitation options. Conclusions: Romanian patients with chronic illnesses and previous SARS-CoV-2 infection continue to face substantial barriers in accessing post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services. These findings highlight the need for more equitable and integrated recovery programs, especially for vulnerable populations in underserved settings. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a profound interruption in the way people travel and has had a very negative impact on tourism and economics throughout the world, especially on the coastal fishing communities in South Korea. These previously problematic areas, having suffered a decrease in the local population as well as stood in the midst of the economic downturn, experienced a great cut in the number of tourists coming from far away, which additionally caused their collapse of resilience and sustainability. This research investigates the recovery trends of 45 seashore-fishing districts in South Korea and how the change in travel distance and the number of visitors before and after the pandemic have affected these trends. Through the utilization of big data from the Korea Tourism Data Lab (2019–2023) and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, we observe the changes in visitor flows, use the indices of resilience as an indicator to measure them, and investigate how proximity affects travel recovery. The survey results indicate that the regions neighboring metropolitan zones were not only the ones that suffered the most from travel distance during the pandemic but also experienced quick recovery after the pandemic. The new promotional campaigns, in tandem with an improved network of transportation, contributed to the swift recovery of these areas. The remote areas, on the other hand, persist in fighting the problems of regionalized tourism and have only limited accessibility. The proposition of “distance-dependent resilience” theory as well as the Blue Urbanism framework is offered in order to bring up the ideas of sustainable tourism and population stabilization. The study is expected to serve as a cornerstone for the practice of adaptive governance and strategic planning in the matter of the coastal areas after the pandemic. Full article

This study aims to identify the factors that influence the behavior of Costa Rican tourists visiting rural destinations after the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby contributing to sustainable rural tourism development. The study applies data analysis using the partial least squares (PLS) regression technique to evaluate a reflective measurement model, based on data collected via a questionnaire. The evidence indicates that for the analyzed destination, the most significant factors influencing the behavior of Costa Rican tourists visiting rural destinations after the COVID-19 pandemic are learning, ICTs, and, in particular, relaxation. Although biosecurity and social influence do not affect the intention to return, these findings highlight the crucial role of learning and ICTs in the tourist experience and loyalty to the destination. This study contributes novel empirical insights to the still limited post-pandemic research on rural tourism, by providing current information on changes in tourist behavior in a specific post-pandemic context. Additionally, it focuses on a popular rural tourist destination in Costa Rica, offering a deeper understanding of a less explored tourism segment, as most previous studies have examined urban or international tourism. Specifically, this research addresses the gap regarding domestic tourist behavior in rural areas using a quantitative approach (PLS), revealing key drivers of return intention. The findings may also be relevant for rural destinations facing similar post-pandemic challenges in other countries. Full article

This study examines six decades (1964–2023) of changes in motor skills and body dimensions among Japanese 13-year-old students, analyzing grip strength, handball throwing, 50 m dash, endurance running, and composite scores. National Physical Fitness and Motor Skills Survey data were analyzed alongside School Health Examination Survey measurements to identify trends and correlations between performance metrics and anthropometric variables. The results revealed distinct developmental patterns, with motor skills peaking in the 1980s for both genders, followed by decline until 2000, after which boys experienced stagnation while girls showed improvement until 2019. Both genders demonstrated marked decreases following 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, while height increased significantly over the study period, only boys’ 50 m dash performance showed strong positive correlations with height (r = 0.779) and BMI (r = 0.854). This longitudinal analysis demonstrates how interdisciplinary factors—including educational policy shifts, reduced physical education curriculum hours, changes in urban park design, diminished outdoor play opportunities, and increased sedentary behaviors—collectively impact children’s motor development. These findings hold significant implications for public health initiatives and sports education strategies aimed at reversing concerning trends in youth physical capabilities and addressing the substantial post-pandemic decline in motor performance. Urban regeneration is pivotal to sustainable development, requiring innovative strategies that align social dynamics with spatial configurations. Traditional paradigms increasingly fail to tackle systemic challenges—neighborhood alienation, social fragmentation, and resource inequality—due to their inability to integrate human-centered spatial governance. This study addresses these shortcomings with a novel multidimensional framework that merges social perception (life satisfaction) analytics with spatial quality (GIS-based) assessment. At its core, we utilize geospatial and machine learning models, deploying an ensemble of Gradient Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT), Random Forest (RF), and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) to decode nonlinear socio-spatial interactions within Suzhou’s community environmental matrix. Our findings reveal critical intersections where residential density thresholds interact with commercial accessibility patterns and transport network configurations. Notably, we highlight the scale-dependent influence of educational proximity and healthcare distribution on community satisfaction, challenging conventional planning doctrines that rely on static buffer-zone models. Through rigorous spatial econometric modeling, this research uncovers three transformative insights: (1) Urban environment exerts a dominant influence on life satisfaction, accounting for 52.61% of the variance. Air quality emerges as a critical determinant, while factors such as proximity to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and public landmarks exhibit nonlinear effects across spatial scales. (2) Housing price growth in Suzhou displays significant spatial clustering, with a Moran’s I of 0.130. Green space coverage positively correlates with price appreciation (β = 21.6919 ***), whereas floor area ratio exerts a negative impact (β = −4.1197 ***), highlighting the trade-offs between density and property value. (3) The MGWR model outperforms OLS in explaining housing price dynamics, achieving an R2 of 0.5564 and an AICc of 11,601.1674. This suggests that MGWR captures 55.64% of pre- and post-pandemic price variations while better reflecting spatial heterogeneity. By merging community-expressed sentiment mapping with morphometric urban analysis, this interdisciplinary research pioneers a protocol for socio-spatial integrated urban transitions—one where algorithmic urbanism meets human-scale needs, not technological determinism. These findings recalibrate urban regeneration paradigms, demonstrating that data-driven socio-spatial integration is not a theoretical aspiration but an achievable governance reality. Full article

Major public health events pose a huge challenge to the sustainable improvement of city dwellers’ ecological well-being, hindering the achievement of urban ecological construction goals. In the context of resilient city and all-aged friendly city construction, age factor is given special consideration in urban green space management to meet the heterogeneous demands and preferences of city dwellers for urban ecological benefit. However, young, middle-age and elderly city dwellers’ utilization of urban green spaces during different periods of pandemic are poorly known. Meanwhile, insufficient discussion on the differences in ecological well-being contributions of different types of urban green spaces has led to difficulties in effectively connecting urban green space management planning with the city dwellers’ demands for ecological well-being. To help fill this gap, this study utilizes field study data on urban ecological construction and urban landscape and greening in Beijing from 2019 to 2023 to analyze the evolution and differences in utilization behaviors of urban green space among different age group city dwellers. Furthermore, this study applies the ordinary least square regression model (OLS) to explore the differences in the impact of various types of urban green space on the ecological well-being of city dwellers. The results revealed significant age effects in the utilization of urban green space during 2019–2023. It outlines the increased time spent in urban green space by younger city dwellers. In addition, the results demonstrated that the utilization behavior of park green space has a significant positive impact on the ecological well-being level of city dwellers, and the impact of utilization behavior on the ecological well-being level of city dwellers varies depending on the type of green space. Compared with community green space, the impact of park green space utilization behavior on the ecological well-being level of city dwellers is more significant. The conclusion from the main urban area of this Beijing case study contributes to the international discussion on urban green space management and urban green resilience governance in metropolitan areas worldwide as they add additional insights on the change and difference in the utilization behavior of urban green spaces, particularly looking at elderly, middle-aged and young city dwellers as well as the importance of a timely response to the heterogeneity preference of city dwellers’ ecological well-being demand. Assessing the Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Health Impacts of Surface Ozone Pollution in Beijing, China

Surface ozone has emerged as a concerning pollutant in Beijing, China. This study assessed ozone pollution and its health impacts in Beijing using ground (35 stations) and satellite data (2014–2023). Temporal trends were analyzed across various temporal scales, while spatial variability was evaluated using integrated ground and satellite-derived continuous data. Health impacts were quantified via a log-linear concentration–response model. Results show that for ozone concentrations during the post-pandemic period (2019–2023, covering the onset of COVID-19 in 2019 and the period following), daytime concentrations decreased by 6.8 μg/m3, but nighttime concentrations increased by 5.4 μg/m3. Spatially, ozone concentrations were higher in urban areas than in suburban areas in summer, but the reverse occurred in other seasons. Satellite data revealed broader Grade II (160 μg/m3) exceedance variability (3.0–20.3%) compared to station estimates (15.3–18.7%). Health impact assessments indicated that achieving the Grade I standard (100 μg/m3) could prevent approximately 576 (95% CI: 317–827) all-cause deaths and 294 (95% CI: 111–467) cardiovascular deaths per year, which is 3.5 times more than the reductions from meeting the Grade II standard (160 μg/m3). These findings underscore the need for adaptive ozone controls and tiered mitigation strategies to reduce health risks in Beijing. Full article

Bullying poses significant challenges to adolescent health and well-being. This time-trend study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on bullying behaviors and associated emotional and behavioral difficulties among Greek adolescents. Data were collected from two cross-sectional surveys in 2016 (n = 1574) and 2023 (n = 5753) conducted in Greece. Both samples comprised students aged 12–16 years, with near-equal gender distribution (2016, 53.4% girls; 2023, 54.5% girls) and a predominance of urban residents (approximately 73% in both samples). Traditional and cyberbullying experiences were assessed via structured questionnaires, while mental health outcomes were measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Post-pandemic findings revealed substantial increases in bullying involvement; traditional bullying victimization rose from 12.4% to 21.7%, and cyberbullying victimization increased from 4.0% to 11.6%. Correspondingly, mean SDQ total scores increased significantly from 8.59 to 14.16, reflecting heightened emotional and behavioral problems. Logistic regression analyses identified male gender, urban residence, and non-traditional family structures as significant predictors of bullying involvement. These results underscore the amplified burden of bullying and mental health difficulties in the post-pandemic era, highlighting the urgent need for targeted prevention and intervention strategies to address both traditional and cyberbullying within diverse sociodemographic contexts. Background: Workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare, particularly in emergency departments (EDs), is a growing and complex issue that significantly impacts healthcare providers (HCPs). Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the rates of WPV have increased globally, contributing to increased burnout, reduced morale, and heightened challenges in staff retention within EDs. Objective: This study aimed to explore HCPs’ perspectives on WPV in EDs. The insights gathered were intended to inform targeted interventions in a quality improvement initiative focused on addressing WPV in our healthcare institutions. Methods: A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews was conducted with 52 HCPs across two urban EDs at a multi-site academic health center. Participants from various roles and shifts shared experiences related to safety, leadership, training, and security. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, anonymized, and thematically analyzed to identify key themes surrounding WPV in EDs. Results: The thematic analysis identified four main themes, including (1) Violence is Part of the Job, (2) Leadership Dynamics regarding WPV, (3) Disconnect Among ED Staff During WPV Response, and (4) Enhancing Systems and Culture for Effective WPV Management. These themes provide a comprehensive view of HCPs’ experiences and offer actionable recommendations for healthcare organizations seeking to address WPV. Conclusions: The study provides valuable qualitative insights into WPV in EDs, emphasizing the importance of addressing cultural, structural, and procedural gaps. These findings can guide the development of more supportive and effective strategies to create a safer environment for ED staff. Further rounds of interviews are planned post-intervention to assess changes in HCPs’ perceptions and experiences. Full article
