Urban air pollution remains a significant environmental and public health issue, especially in European coastal cities such as Klaipėda. However, there is still a lack of local-scale knowledge on how land use structure influences pollutant distribution, highlighting the need to address this gap. This study addresses this by examining the spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in Klaipėda’s seaport city and several inland and coastal resort towns in Lithuania. The research specifically asks how different land cover types and demographic factors affect NO2 variability and population exposure risk. Data were collected using passive sampling methods and analyzed within a GIS environment. The results revealed clear air quality differences between industrial/port zones and greener resort areas, confirmed by statistically significant associations between land cover types and pollutant levels. Based on these findings, a Land Use Pollution Pressure index (LUPP) and its population-weighted variant (PLUPP) were developed to capture demographic sensitivity. These indices provide a practical decision-support tool for sustainable urban planning, enabling the assessment of pollution risks and the forecasting of air quality changes under different land use scenarios, while contributing to local climate adaptation and urban environmental governance. Highway accessibility plays a vital role in supporting local economic development, particularly in regions lacking access to sea or river ports. Recognizing the functional transformation of road infrastructure, the Chinese government has made substantial investments in its expansion. Nevertheless, a theoretical gap remains in justifying whether such investments yield significant economic returns. Drawing on the theory of economic externalities, this study investigates the causal relationship between highway development and regional economic growth, and assesses whether highway construction leads to an acceleration in growth rates. Utilizing panel data from 14 Chinese cities spanning 2000 to 2014, the synthetic control method (SCM) is employed to evaluate the economic externalities of highway investment. The results indicate a positive impact on surrounding industries. Furthermore, a growth rate forecasting analysis based on Back-Propagation Neural Networks (BPNNs) is conducted using industrial enterprise data from 2005 to 2014. The growth rate in the treated city is 1.144%, which is close to the real number 1.117%, higher than the number for the weighted control group, which is 1.000%. The findings suggest that the growth rate of total industrial output improved significantly, confirming the existence of positive spillover effects. This not only enriches the empirical literature on transport infrastructure but also provides targeted enlightenment for the sustainable development of urban economy in terms of policy guidance. This paper presents an enhanced hub location model tailored to port–hinterland logistics planning, grounded in the Capacitated Multiple-Allocation Hub Location Problem (CMAHLP). The formulation incorporates nonlinear cost structures, hub-specific operating costs, adaptive capacity constraints, and a feasibility condition based on the Social Net Present Value (NPVsocial) to support the design of intermodal freight networks under asymmetric spatial and socio-environmental conditions. The empirical case focuses on Spain, leveraging its strategic position between Asia, North Africa, and Europe. The model includes four major ports—Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, and Algeciras—as intermodal gateways connected to the 47 provinces of peninsular Spain through calibrated cost matrices based on real distances and mode-specific road and rail costs. A Genetic Algorithm is applied to evaluate 120 scenarios, varying the number of active hubs (4, 6, 8, 10, 12), transshipment discounts (α = 0.2 and 1.0), and internal parameters. The most efficient configuration involved 300 generations, 150 individuals, a crossover rate of 0.85, and a mutation rate of 0.40. The algorithm integrates guided mutation, elitist reinsertion, and local search on the top 15% of individuals. Results confirm the central role of Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona, frequently accompanied by high-performance inland hubs such as Málaga, Córdoba, Jaén, Palencia, León, and Zaragoza. Cities with active ports such as Cartagena, Seville, and Alicante appear in several of the most efficient network configurations. Their recurring presence underscores the strategic role of inland hubs located near seaports in supporting logistical cohesion and operational resilience across the system. The COVID-19 crisis, the Suez Canal incident, and the persistent tensions in the Red Sea have made clear the fragility of traditional freight corridors linking Asia and Europe. These shocks have brought renewed strategic attention to southern Spain—particularly the Mediterranean and Andalusian axes—as viable alternatives that offer both geographic and intermodal advantages. In this evolving context, the contribution of southern hubs gains further support through strong system-wide performance indicators such as entropy, cluster diversity, and Pareto efficiency, which allow for the assessment of spatial balance, structural robustness, and optimal trade-offs in intermodal freight planning. Southern hubs, particularly in coordination with North African partners, are poised to gain prominence in an emerging Euro–Maghreb logistics interface that demands a territorial balance and resilient port–hinterland integration. Ports represent the point of intersection between sea and land, as well as a crucial node for the integration of maritime and land transport in the global logistics chain. Consequently, it is crucial to consider an articulated system that includes dry ports, freight interchange and intermodal logistics platforms, since the relationships between the port and the city, as well as those between the different decision-makers involved, are multiple and complex. Maritime transport and port operations have a direct and indirect impact on the surrounding contexts, with significant effects, particularly from an environmental point of view. Therefore, the green transition in logistics, port, and maritime systems is essential for reducing these impacts. In this context, the aspects related to operational practices and terminal design are of great importance. This paper aims to explore sustainable strategies for ports and maritime logistics in order to provide a methodological approach to green transition. The proposed methodology was divided into phases. First, an analysis of international and European legislation was conducted in order to identify the main critical issues. Subsequently, a review of the existing literature and best practices was carried out to identify tested solutions. The third phase included a Stakeholder Engagement Process, centred on the use of a thematic focus group to foster a collaborative approach to the definition of priorities and operational strategies. Part of the proposed methodology was implemented as part of the DEMASTER—Design of Maritime Sustainable Terminals—project, and it can allow for the evaluation of the different options and the identification of more effective and innovative solutions for the green transition. Quantifying the Drivers of the Spatial Distribution of Urban Surfaces in Bangladesh: A Multi-Method Geospatial Analysis

Urban expansion threatens sustainable development in densely populated countries like Bangladesh. This study aims to quantitatively identify and evaluate the key drivers influencing the spatial distribution of urban surfaces (SDUS) in Chattogram City, providing insights into urban growth patterns over 30 years. Using Landsat 5 and 9 imageries, the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) was computed for 1993 and 2023 to map urban surface changes. A total of 16 geospatial variables representing potential drivers were analyzed. Four statistical and machine learning methods, including GeoDetector, Distributed Random Forest (DRF), global Geographically Weighted Random Forest (GWRF), and local GWRF, were employed to quantify individual and interactive influences on SDUS. The Geodetector analysis identified the central business district (CBD) as the most influential driver of urban surface distribution, with a q statistic of 0.22, followed by river proximity (q = 0.14) and administrative boundaries (q = 0.13). Across all models, CBD consistently ranked as a dominant factor. In the Distributed Random Forest (DRF) model, CBD showed the highest importance score (0.57), followed by coastlines (0.35) and rivers (0.35). The DRF model achieved the highest performance (R2 = 0.612), outperforming the global GWRF (R2 = 0.59) and local GWRF (R2 = 0.529). Although variables like the proximity of administrative location and forests have low individual impacts, they show a stronger coupled influence. This industrial port-based economy expanded, facing challenges of uncontrolled urbanization, poor governance, and environmental issues. Promoting mixed land use planning, decentralizing urban governance, and improving coordination among implementing agencies may better resolve these issues. This work may help planners and policymakers in planning future cities and developing policies to promote sustainable urban growth. Full article

With the implementation of China’s low-sulfur fuel policy, the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from ship exhausts have changed significantly, and the influence of these emissions on the local atmosphere of port cities needs to be evaluated. In this study, the characteristics of localized source profiles of ship-emitted VOCs with respect to different ship types, fuel types, and engine operating conditions were analyzed in Guangzhou Port. Oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) dominated in ferry (91.1%), cargo ship (87.0%), and tugboat (54.4% ± 7.9%) emissions (diesel fuel), while alkanes (56.3% ± 1.6%) and alkenes (36.0% ± 0.9%) were major species in multi-purpose ship (LNG fuel) emissions. These results suggest the dominance of OVOCs in the exhaust emissions of diesel-type ships and the prominent difference in ship-emitted VOCs between diesel and LNG fuel ships, which also influenced the emission characteristics of VOCs from main and auxiliary engines. Based on the measured source profiles, ship emissions contributed 18.2% ± 0.8% (summer), 8.7% ± 1.9% (winter), 6.0% ± 1.1% (spring), and 5.6% ± 1.7% (autumn) to VOCs in the port area, and 7.8% ± 1.5% in July and 5.0% ± 0.5% in September in the urban area. An air mass trajectory analysis revealed that the south wind transported the ship exhaust emissions to the port area and inland urban area, which explained the higher contributions of ship emissions in summer and more ship emissions received in the port area than in the urban area. Therefore, estimating the influence of ship emissions on ambient air quality in port cities requires integrating local ship source profiles, locations, and meteorological conditions. This study provides insights into the ship-emitted VOC characteristics given China’s low-sulfur fuel policy and their differential contributions to urban atmospheric VOCs. Full article

Air quality monitoring (AQM) is key to maintaining healthy air in cities. This is crucial in low- and middle-income countries due to increasing evidence of poor air quality but lack of monitors to consistently collect evaluate air quality data and effect policy changes, mainly because of the costs of monitoring devices. In participating in a challenge for the development of low-cost AQM devices in low-resource regions, an Arduino-based device with sensors for particulate matter size, temperature, and humidity data acquisition was developed for deployment in Port Harcourt, a city in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, exposed to poor air quality partly due to gas and oil production activities. During the project, challenges to AQM were encountered, including inadequate awareness of air quality issues, lack of necessary AQM device components, unavailability of trained manpower and partnerships, and lack of funding. However, lack of a means of calibrating the device was a major hindrance, as no reference AQM instrument was available, rendering the data acquired largely qualitative, educational, and useless for regulatory purposes. There is an urgent need for AQM in such cities. However, a robust AQM strategy must be designed and used to address these constraints, especially whilst using low-cost devices, for significant progress in acquiring robust air quality data in such low-resource regions to be made. Policy Formulations to Establish More Dry Port Infrastructures to Increase Seaport Efficiency, Productivity, and Competitiveness in Bangladesh

Maritime trade in Bangladesh is growing significantly, as observed by UNCTAD, which reported 3.20 mTEUs throughput in 2022. Additionally, the principal seaport, Chattogram Port, reported a port throughput of 3.27 mTEUs in 2024, the historical record for any port in Bangladesh. More than 50% of imports and exports, including empty containers, were handled in 2024 through 19 nos close dry ports in Chattogram City by applying small-scale intermodal systems, where the performance of pure intermodal from/to mid-range dry ports (3 Nos) to Chattogram Port is 2.53%. By 2030, the government wants all import and export operations to be conducted through dry ports. Furthermore, the current volume of international goods freight cannot be handled by the dry ports that are currently in place. This research applied mixed methods to explore the opportunities to set more dry ports and the application of intermodal systems for increasing the seaport’s efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness. The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method was used to know the dry port location, investment, and policy in creating the opportunity to set up more dry ports in Bangladesh. In the findings, 82.50% of participants agreed that existing facilities are not enough and need to establish more dry ports to handle current and future volumes of containers. Moreover, the responses reveal a division of opinion on establishing a dry port outside of Chattogram, with a notable inclination towards opposition. According to 62% of respondents, dry ports outside Chattogram are necessary. To enhance intermodal connectivity and facilitate easier cargo transfers between ports and hinterland regions, integrated infrastructure development would be in line with national economic objectives. The research aims to investigate the possibilities for establishing additional dry ports across the country to boost seaport productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness by utilizing intermodal freight transportation systems to cut costs and time while also considering environmental factors like CO2 emissions. The global population is experiencing a remarkable demographic shift. The population pyramid of African countries looks very different from that of the West, with a youthful population forming the base of the African population, while the population of Western countries has a larger share of an aging population. A broader understanding of the various facets of urban growth in Africa is needed, including the demographic makeup and drivers of growth. However, inadequate attention has been paid to this aspect of urban change in research, even though this knowledge can aid development planning. Demographic concerns like the interconnections between development and population are important issues of national dialogues and debates. Research from Southern Africa has also found a prevalence of female-headed households in urban areas and predicts a rise in this trend. This study thus set out to explore the primary factor behind urban population growth and the extent of prevalence of female-headed households in African cities using Port Harcourt, Nigeria, as a case study. Quantitative research was conducted. The findings revealed that natural increase was largely responsible for urban growth, given the proportion of participants in the age group 18–40 born in the city. This group currently forms the large base of the African urban population. Results also showed that male-headed households were still dominant in Port Harcourt city. This study highlights the need for expansion of similar research in other cities to enable a more holistic understanding of the wider African urban population demographics and dynamics. Full article

During the Modern Age, Seville was known as the Port of the Indies due to its key role in transatlantic trade, although the actual port was located in Triana, a riverside quarter outside the city walls along the Guadalquivir River. This area was essential for maritime and commercial activities, shaping Seville’s economic and social development. This study analyses Triana’s urban layout, social composition, and architecture in the 16th century using historical sources and graphic representations. The quarter combined defensive structures, religious buildings, and residential complexes, reflecting both its strategic importance and distinct identity. Its streets and architecture supported defense, commerce, and daily life, while its diverse community (including sailors, merchants, craftsmen, and dockworkers) was central to its mercantile and manufacturing activity. Architecturally, Triana featured traditional dwellings, corrales de vecinos, mesones, and posadas, that facilitated trade and travel. Examining these elements reveals Triana’s adaptability to economic and social conditions, highlighting its resilience, diverse population, and rich architectural heritage within Seville’s historical context and Atlantic trade. The damage to shipping containers during port handling operations continues to pose a significant challenge that adversely affects operational efficiency, equipment integrity, and supply chain accountability. This study utilises real-world measurement data gathered through accelerometers to examine the occurrence and dynamics of physical impacts, particularly side and rear collisions, during the handling of containers at Klaipėda City Port. The research prioritises two critical scenarios: side impacts during stacking operations with reach stackers and rear impacts during trailer loading procedures. Impact events are meticulously recorded and analysed to ascertain the magnitudes of acceleration across multiple axes. This reveals that side impacts produce significantly greater forces, particularly in the lateral direction, than rear impacts. This study employs sensor-based monitoring, advanced data visualisation techniques, and structured scenario analysis to delineate the variability and intensity of mechanical interactions during these operations. The findings emphasise the structural stress that containers experience and underscore the importance of embedded monitoring technologies for real-time event detection and damage prevention. The results contribute to the expanding body of knowledge that supports the digital transformation of container terminals and furnish actionable insights for enhancing handling protocols, informing insurance assessments, and improving safety measures within both automated and conventional port environments. Urban regeneration projects have been part of urban planning in different cities to recover strategic areas and combat new land consumption. Often, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) agreements are signed to meet the demands of these projects. In the Brazilian context, the general PPP law classifies concessions into two types: sponsored concessions or administrative concessions. Urban regeneration projects in the Brazilian context can be carried out through different policies and instruments, such as those in the City Statute. Despite this, there are several obstacles in how these practices are developed, which require greater attention to the enabling environment and the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) that can improve the performance of these public procurement practices. Based on this, this study aims to analyze the Brazilian context of PPP arrangements in urban regeneration projects and the specific case of the “Porto Maravilha” in Rio de Janeiro. To this scope, the study adopts a previously established CSF framework. The data analyzed are derived from secondary sources obtained through documentation collection and primary sources obtained through interviews. Regarding the PPP process, the results indicate financial and execution problems. Concerning the project, which remains unfinished, the results point to a transformation of the port area, but with significant social impacts. Full article

The Brazilian port sector faces an urgent need for modernization to meet the demands of the contemporary global economy. A significant challenge lies in the shallow depth of access channels, which hinders the navigation of larger ships with deeper drafts, and the fact that many ports are constrained by the proximity of large cities, limiting their expansion. This study aims to identify Brazilian ports with the potential to accommodate post-Panamax ships, a critical component of modern maritime trade. Using a multi-criteria evaluation system, five key criteria were selected: water depth, land capacity for expansion, dredging requirements, water accessibility, and transport infrastructure. These criteria were systematically applied to 210 Brazilian port facilities, analyzed through QGIS 3.38.3 software using satellite imagery and literature sources. To prioritize the most suitable ports, Pareto analysis and quartile analysis were employed, resulting in the identification of 58 port facilities as prime candidates for expansion. This research provides a data-driven framework to guide the modernization of Brazilian ports, positioning them to better serve the growing demands of the global maritime industry. Full article

Children and young people’s mental health and well-being has seen a dramatic decline. In the UK, this has been exacerbated by service retrenchment associated with austerity, with evidence of increasing health inequalities. Service innovation that is grounded in practice, has ongoing learning, and is co-designed with children and young people is required now. This can provide creative solutions within the local context and contribute to the fledgling evidence base that explores complex mechanisms of impact. This methodological reflection describes a co-design process of a bespoke, group-based ecotherapy programme: from early piloting using appreciative enquiry before COVID-19 by the mental health, public health, and Street Services team in the port city of Plymouth, to further developing an evaluation framework through an innovative, matched-funded academia–practice partnership. The findings showcase the benefits of a systems-based approach to public, multi-agency and academic collaboration, facilitated by peer and practitioner researchers and embedded researchers-in-residence. They highlight the need to consider nuances of specific (connecting with self, others, animals, nature) and non-specific active ingredients of the emerging and constantly adapting service (therapeutic relationship with practitioners/carers; nature as therapist, and group dynamics), as well as the value of pragmatic and participatory evaluation methods (distance-travelled, goal-based measures; and ethnographic, qualitative observation), to provide rapid, continuous, and real-time learning and improvement. Analysis of Fine Dust Impacts on Incheon and Busan Port Areas Resulting from Port Emission Reduction Measures

PM2.5 concentrations in major port cities in the Republic of Korea, such as Incheon and Busan, are as serious as those in land-based metropolises, such as Seoul, and fine dust generated in port cities is mainly emitted from ships. To identify the specific substances influencing local air quality, the occurrence and effects of high concentrations of PM2.5 at the ports of Incheon and Busan were analyzed. To analyze the effects of improving air quality based on the Republic of Korea’s port and ship-related reduction measures, we calculated an emissions forecast for 2025 following the implementation/non-implementation of these measures and analyzed all impacts using the WRF-SMOKE-CMAQ modeling system. The ratio of ionic components constituting PM2.5 at the ports of Incheon and Busan was generally high in nitrate composition; however, the ratio of sulfate was high on high PM2.5 concentration days. When implementing measures to reduce emissions related to ports and ships, forecasted PM2.5 and SO2 emissions showed substantial decreases in port areas as well as nearby land and sea areas. The associated decrease in the PM2.5 concentration was highly influential in reducing the concentration of sulfate. Full article
