Conflicting priorities between policymakers and local communities often compromise conservation outcomes in landscapes reliant on natural resources. Understanding how diverse stakeholders value ecosystem services (ESs) across coexisting land uses is essential; however, empirical evidence from rural Southeast Asia remains limited. This study examined ES perceptions and priorities among community members (n = 500) and experts (n = 30) within a bamboo forest, rice paddy, and teak plantation in Sangthong District, Lao PDR. A two-step survey methodology was employed: initially assessing ES perceptions to filter locally relevant services using a ≥50% recognition threshold, followed by quantifying priorities for this subset through a 100-point allocation task. The results revealed a systematic divergence in priorities rooted in differing knowledge systems. Communities, grounded in traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), prioritized tangible provisioning and cultural services (e.g., food and raw materials). In contrast, experts emphasized regulating services (e.g., carbon sequestration and hazard regulation) and habitat services (e.g., biodiversity and habitat provision). Distinct “ES bundles” also emerged by land use: bamboo (raw materials and freshwater), rice (food and medicine), and teak (timber/bioenergy and regulating services). Our findings suggest a policy transition from single-objective management toward optimizing landscape-level ES portfolios, alongside institutionalizing participatory co-management that formally integrates local knowledge and enhances ES literacy. As vehicle-centric perception struggles with occlusion and dense traffic, vehicle-infrastructure cooperative perception (VICP) offers a viable route to extend sensing coverage and robustness. This study proposes a feature-level VICP framework that fuses vehicle- and roadside-derived visual features via V2X communication. The model integrates four components: regional feature reconstruction (RFR) for transferring region-specific roadside cues, context-driven channel attention (CDCA) for channel recalibration, uncertainty-weighted fusion (UWF) for confidence-guided weighting, and point sampling voxel fusion (PSVF) for efficient alignment. Evaluated on the DAIR-V2X-C benchmark, our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art feature-level fusion baselines, achieving improved AP3D and APBEV (reported settings: 16.31% and 21.49%, respectively). Ablations show RFR provides the largest single-module gain +3.27% AP3D and +3.85% APBEV, UWF yields substantial robustness gains, and CDCA offers modest calibration benefits. The framework enhances occlusion handling and cross-view detection while reducing dependence on explicit camera calibration, supporting more generalizable cooperative perception. Full article

Eye-tracking technology enables communication for individuals with muscle control difficulties, making it a valuable assistive tool. Traditional systems rely on electrooculography (EOG) or infrared devices, which are accurate but costly and invasive. While vision-based systems offer a more accessible alternative, they have not been extensively explored for eye-writing recognition. Additionally, the natural instability of eye movements and variations in writing styles result in inconsistent signal lengths, which reduces recognition accuracy and limits the practical use of eye-writing systems. To address these challenges, we propose a novel vision-based eye-writing recognition approach that utilizes a webcam-captured dataset. A key contribution of our approach is the introduction of a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)-based length normalization method that standardizes the length of each eye-writing sample while preserving essential spectral characteristics. This ensures uniformity in input lengths and improves both efficiency and robustness. Moreover, we integrate a hybrid deep learning model that combines 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN) to jointly capture spatial and temporal features of eye-writing. To further improve model robustness, we incorporate data augmentation and initial-point normalization techniques. The proposed system was evaluated using our new webcam-captured Arabic numbers dataset and two existing benchmark datasets, with leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross-validation. The model achieved accuracies of 97.68% on the new dataset, 94.48% on the Japanese Katakana dataset, and 98.70% on the EOG-captured Arabic numbers dataset—outperforming existing systems. This work provides an efficient eye-writing recognition system, featuring robust preprocessing techniques, a hybrid deep learning model, and a new webcam-captured dataset. Full article

Aiming at the challenges of design complexity and parameter adjustment difficulties in existing distributed controllers, a novel power flow sensitivity-based distributed cooperative control approach is proposed for voltage regulation and power sharing in droop-controlled DC distribution networks (DCDNs). Firstly, based on the power flow model of droop-controlled DCDNs, a comprehensive sensitivity model is established that correlates bus voltages, voltage source converter (VSC) loading rates, and VSC reference power adjustments. Leveraging the sensitivity model, a discrete-time linear state-space model is developed for DCDNs, using all VSC reference power as control variables, along with the weighted sum of the voltage deviation at the VSC connection point and the loading rate deviation of adjacent VSCs as state variables. A distributed consensus controller is then designed to alleviate the communication burden. The feedback gain design problem is formulated as an unconstrained multi-objective optimization model, which simultaneously enhances dynamic response speed, suppresses overshoot and oscillation, and ensures stability. The model can be efficiently solved by global optimization algorithms such as the genetic algorithm, and the feedback gains can be designed in a systematic and principled manner. The simulation results on a typical four-terminal DCDN under large power disturbances demonstrate that the proposed distributed control method achieves rapid voltage recovery and converter load sharing under a sparse communication network. The design complexity and parameter adjustment difficulties are greatly reduced without losing the control performance. Full article

Self-efficacy (SE) enables pre-service teachers to manage learning tasks and solve problems with confidence, which is essential for professional development and for addressing real-world teaching challenges. This study aimed to enhance SE through an integrated approach combining Lesson Study and Community of Practice (CoP plus LS) to better prepare pre-service teachers for classroom practice. Thirteen pre-service teachers in a teaching practicum were assigned to either an experimental group (CoP plus LS, n = 7) or a control group receiving conventional training (n = 6). A mixed-methods design was employed: SE was measured quantitatively using validated questionnaires at three time points (pre-test, post-test, and 8-week follow-up), and qualitative data were collected through semi-structured group interviews. Quantitative results showed that the CoP plus LS group demonstrated significantly greater improvement in SE compared to the control group. Within the CoP plus LS group, SE increased significantly from pre-test to post-test, with scores at follow-up remaining higher than baseline despite a slight decline. Qualitative findings revealed four themes: (1) enhanced classroom management and instructional design, (2) stronger professional identity and commitment, (3) recognition of real-world teaching challenges, and (4) growth through collaborative reflection and learning. Overall, the findings indicate that CoP plus LS effectively strengthens SE among pre-service teachers. Incorporating this approach into teacher education is recommended to enhance psychological readiness and foster sustainable professional growth. Full article

Aiming at the partition requirements of regional centralized wide-area backup protection systems, this paper proposes a grid partition method considering communication constraints. Firstly, a mathematical model is constructed by combining the communication delay threshold and the channel bandwidth utilization rate, and the optimal number of master stations is dynamically determined. The communication delay threshold strictly meets the backup protection requirements of 10 to 15 ms, and the bandwidth utilization rate is optimized to a 50% balance point. Secondly, a weighted evaluation function is established based on the shortest communication distance and site connectivity, and the master station is selected according to a geographical dispersion constraint. Furthermore, the dual factors of data transmission delay and propagation delay are combined, in which the minimum bandwidth of the transmission delay correlation path and the length of the propagation delay correlation path are used to realize the optimal division of sub-stations using a graph theory algorithm. Finally, a standby master station with a physical isolation distance of not less than 50 km is selected in each sub-area to effectively deal with failure problems caused by a master station failure. The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the propagation delay and significantly improve the reliability of the protection system, while maintaining a balanced distribution of the number of substations. Purpose: Decentralized hearing care models facilitated by community health workers (CHWs) can improve access to care in low-income settings. Preset hearing aids, which offer user-selectable pre-developed amplification programs, may support such models, but little is known about their real-world use and alignment with clinical recommendations. Method: This longitudinal study formed part of a feasibility project implementing the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) hearing aid service delivery approach in three low-income South African communities. Adults (≥18 years) with confirmed moderate-to-severe bilateral hearing loss were fitted with preset hearing aids by trained CHWs. Devices offered four preset amplification programs. Participant-driven selections were recorded at four distinct time points: fitting and follow-ups at 2 weeks, 2 months, and 6 months post-fitting. Results: In total, 36 participants (mean age = 76 years, SD = 8.9, range 50–96) were fitted with devices. Although over half (right: 52.8%, left: 58.3%) presented with high-frequency loss, only 34% initially selected the corresponding program. Most participants (80.6%, n = 29) changed their selections at least once over the six months. Significant associations between hearing loss configuration and selection occurred at some time points only in the left ear, but agreement with clinically recommended programs declined from 42% at baseline to 28% at six months. Conclusions: CHW-facilitated hearing aid delivery supports user autonomy in low-resource settings. However, frequent changes and divergence from clinically recommended programs suggest reliance on user-driven trial-and-error adjustments rather than audiometric fit, which may limit long-term benefit. Ongoing, person-centred guidance is needed for the effective use of preset hearing aids. Full article

Background/Objective: This study examined whether a brief measure combining subjective cognitive concerns and financial interference, termed Subjective Cognitive Decline-Financial (SCD-F), is associated with excess spending behavior in older adults. Methods: Community-dwelling older adults, some with early memory loss and some with no cognitive complaints (N = 150, M age = 72.6), provided 12 months of checking account statements and participated in interviews to clarify aspects of their personal financial behaviors. SCD-F was defined by asking if memory decline was interfering with financial decision-making or transactions. A 3-point SCD-F measure was created. Excess spending was determined by checking whether account expenditures exceeded all sources of income. Nonparametric tests (Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U) and multiple regression models assessed group differences and predictors. Results: Group differences in excess spending were pronounced (H(2) = 15.75, p < 0.001). Those in the high SCD-F group had a significantly greater likelihood of excess spending (Z = −4.11; r = 0.43) and higher excess spending percentages (Z = −4.11; r = 0.43) compared to those with no memory loss. Regression analyses indicated that SCD-F was the strongest predictor of excessive spending (β = 0.40, t = 5.43, p < 0.001), even after controlling for age, gender, race, and education (R2 = 0.235, F(5,144) = 8.86, p < 0.001). Conclusions: A brief self-report measure, SCD-F, effectively identifies older adults at risk of financial mismanagement, even absent formal cognitive impairment. Monitoring subjective cognitive concerns together with financial interference could enable early intervention. This brief measure may be useful in clinical settings as a screening tool, and in large national surveys. Full article

This paper develops a Natural Language Processing (NLP) pipeline to quantify the hawkish–dovish stance in the Federal Reserve’s semiannual Monetary Policy Reports (MPRs). The goal is to transform long-form central-bank text into reproducible stance scores and interpretable policy signals for research and monitoring. The corpus comprises 26 MPRs (26 February 2013 to 20 June 2025). PDFs are parsed and segmented and chunks are embedded, indexed with FAISS, retrieved via LangChain, and scored by GPT-4o on a continuous scale from −2 (dovish) to +2 (hawkish). Reliability is assessed with a four-dimension validation suite: (i) semantic consistency using cosine-similarity separation, (ii) numerical consistency against theory-implied correlation ranges (e.g., Taylor-rule logic), (iii) bootstrap stability of reported metrics, and (iv) content-quality diagnostics. Results show a predominant Neutral distribution (50.0%), with Dovish (26.9%) and Hawkish (23.1%). The average stance is near zero (≈0.019) with volatility σ ≈ 0.866, and the latest window exhibits a hawkish drift of ~+0.8 points. The Numerical Consistency Score is 0.800, and the integrated validation score is 0.796, indicating publication-grade robustness. We conclude that an embedding-based, agentic RAG approach with GPT-4o yields a scalable, auditable measure of FED communication; limitations include biannual frequency and prompt/model sensitivity, but the framework is suitable for policy tracking and empirical applications. Background/Objectives: There is a growing need for programs addressing perinatal mental health, particularly for new mothers. Postpartum depression (PPD) may occur during pregnancy or within the first year postpartum, with both short- and long-term negative consequences for both mothers and their infants. This study describes the cultural adaptation, implementation, and one-year follow-up of the Mom-to-Mom (M2M) program for minority Bedouin women in Southern Israel. Methods: We conducted a community-based intervention (M2M) emphasizing cultural adaptation. Outreach efforts were conducted in collaboration with healthcare professionals to encourage referral to the M2M program. A total of 111 mothers completed a self-administered questionnaire that included socio-demographic characteristics and PPD symptoms (PPDs) at two time points: prior to the intervention (Time-1) and one year after participating in the program (Time-2). PPD was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), using a score cutoff of ≥10. Results: There was a significant decrease in PPDs (EPDS ≥ 13) between Time-1 and Time-2 after one year of follow-up in the M2M program (from 45% to 19.8%). Of the participants, 75% were referred to the program by healthcare professionals. Among those with EPDS ≥ 10, 30% were referred to mental health services. This program provided education, professional support, and led to the establishment of the first M2M center within a Bedouin community, located in the Negev (Naqab). Conclusions: The results emphasize the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to increase awareness, early diagnosis, and professional support in addressing PPD, tailored to a cultural context. Culturally adapted programs can be effective in minority populations and contribute to reducing disparities in maternal mental health care. Full article

Food labels are common elements of everyday life. However, from the point of view of communication researchers (especially visual communication), they are incredibly interesting cultural artifacts, located at the intersection of communication, design, technology, and regulation. This article analyzes the evolution of the labels of Muszynianka, a leading mineral water brand in Poland, from the perspective of media archaeology. It treats labels as dual artifacts—media (information carriers, regulatory objects) and artistic (elements of applied art, design). This article emphasizes the importance of materiality, the non-linearity of history and the analysis of the technological–regulatory “archive.” It develops concepts of labels as complex, multimodal messages, especially in a historical context. The authors conducted a visual analysis of the evolution of Muszynianka’s labels, placing them within broader design trends. To explore recurring visual and narrative motifs, a topoi analysis method was used to identify three basic topoi: Topos of Nature/Mountain Origin, Topos of Health/Vitality/Purity, and Topos of Modernity/Technology. As the world is technologically advancing, the integration of FSO communication in non-terrestrial platforms is transforming the landscape of global connectivity. By enabling high-data-rate inter-satellite links, secure UAV–ground channels, and efficient HAPS backhaul, FSO technology is paving the way for sustainable 6G non-terrestrial networks. However, the stringent requirement for precise line-of-sight (LoS) alignment between the optical transmitter and receivers poses a hindrance in practical deployment. As non-terrestrial missions require continuous movement across the mission area, the platform is subject to vibrations, dynamic motion, and environmental disturbances. This makes maintaining the LoS between the transceivers difficult. While fine-pointing mechanisms such as fast steering mirrors and adaptive optics are effective for microradian angular corrections, they rely heavily on an initial coarse alignment to maintain the LoS. Coarse pointing modules or gimbals serve as the primary mechanical interface for steering and stabilizing the optical beam over wide angular ranges. This survey presents a comprehensive analysis of coarse pointing and gimbal modules that are being used in FSO communication systems for non-terrestrial platforms. The paper classifies gimbal architectures based on actuation type, degrees of freedom, and stabilization strategies. Key design trade-offs are examined, including angular precision, mechanical inertia, bandwidth, and power consumption, which directly impact system responsiveness and tracking accuracy. This paper also highlights emerging trends such as AI-driven pointing prediction and lightweight gimbal design for SWap-constrained platforms. The final part of the paper discusses open challenges and research directions in developing scalable and resilient coarse pointing systems for aerial FSO networks. Full article

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive abilities and a progressive loss of the neuronal system resulting from neuronal damage and death. The maintenance of neuronal homeostasis is intricately connected to the crosstalk and balance among organelles. Indeed, intracellular organelles are not just isolated compartments in the cell; instead, they are interdependent structures that can communicate through membrane contact sites (MCSs), forming physical connection points represented by proteinaceous tethers. Mitochondria and lysosomes have fundamental physiological functions within neurons, and accumulating evidence highlights their dysfunctions as AD features, strongly associated with the neurodegenerative process underlying the development and progression of AD. This review explores mitochondria-lysosome communication through MCSs, the tethering proteins and their functions in the cell, discussing the methodological challenges in measuring the structure and dynamics of contacts, and the potential role of altered mitochondria-lysosome communication in the context of organelle dysfunction related to neuron impairment in AD pathogenesis. The different abundance of the tethering proteins was considered in healthy physiological and in AD-related conditions to assess the possible organelle communication dysregulation and the subsequent cellular function alterations, and to evaluate the role of mitochondria-lysosome MCSs in the pathogenesis of this disorder. Cacipacoré virus (CPCV) is an understudied orthoflavivirus with significant gaps in research that hinders our understanding of its ecology, host range, and potential public health impact. A notable barrier to filling this gap is the absence of standardized methodologies for viral quantification, such as plaque-forming and focus-forming assays. This short communication outlines the development of optimized protocols for CPCV titration in two cell lines, Vero CCL-81 and BHK CCL-10, using several overlay and time point conditions. These methodologies address the need for robust quantitative tools to advance research on CPCV and its implications for human and animal health, fostering progress in the surveillance and understanding of this underexplored arbovirus. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas is a biodiversity hotspot due to its high alpha, beta, and gamma diversity and high regional endemism, which are at high risk of degradation. The region has lost 95% of its native thornforest habitat primarily due to agricultural and urban expansion. This study aims to evaluate the current vegetative structure and composition of restored thornforest sites located in the LRGV to identify restoration methods and site characteristics that affect forest restoration outcomes. Twelve restored thornforest sites were selected for this study that varied in time since restoration, patch size, degree of isolation, and method of restoration. Canopy, understory, and ground layer vegetation were evaluated at six survey points per restored site (n = 72), and 17 environmental variables were incorporated into univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors influencing restored plant communities. Actively restored sites showed higher overall richness, abundance, and diversity than passively restored sites. More isolated patches had higher overall richness, abundance, and diversity, and longer times since restoration began increased richness and diversity. Higher abundances of Urochloa maxima, an invasive grass, altered community composition and reduced diversity in each forest layer and overall and reduced richness in the canopy and ground layers. Important considerations for thornforest restoration in the LRGV should include invasive grass prevalence; proximity to riparian and seasonal wetland habitats; landscape factors that influence water availability; and patch geography, including shape, size, and proximity to other forest patches.
