This paper proposes a novel dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) framework that integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications into an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, termed the ISAC-UAV architecture. In this system, the UAV’s mobility is leveraged to simultaneously serve multiple single-antenna uplink users (UEs) and perform radar-based sensing tasks. A key challenge stems from the target position uncertainty due to movement, which impairs matched filtering and beamforming, thereby degrading both uplink reception and sensing performance. Moreover, UAV energy consumption associated with mobility must be considered to ensure energy-efficient operation. We aim to jointly maximize radar sensing accuracy and minimize UAV movement energy over multiple time steps, while maintaining reliable uplink communications. To address this multi-objective optimization, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a long short-term memory (LSTM)-enhanced deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) network. By leveraging historical target trajectory data, the model improves prediction of target positions, enhancing sensing accuracy. The proposed DRL-based approach enables joint optimization of UAV trajectory and uplink power control over time. Extensive simulations validate that our method significantly improves communication quality and sensing performance, while ensuring energy-efficient UAV operation. Comparative results further confirm the model’s adaptability and robustness in dynamic environments, outperforming existing UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation benchmarks. Full article

Compared to traditional real-valued neural networks, which process only amplitude information, complex-valued neural networks handle both amplitude and phase information, leading to superior performance in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification tasks. This paper proposes a multi-scale feature extraction (MSFE) method based on a 3D complex-valued network to improve classification accuracy by fully leveraging multi-scale features, including phase information. We first designed a complex-valued three-dimensional network framework combining complex-valued 3D convolution (CV-3DConv) with complex-valued squeeze-and-excitation (CV-SE) modules. This framework is capable of simultaneously capturing spatial and polarimetric features, including both amplitude and phase information, from PolSAR images. Furthermore, to address robustness degradation from limited labeled samples, we introduced a multi-scale learning strategy that jointly models global and local features. Specifically, global features extract overall semantic information, while local features help the network capture region-specific semantics. This strategy enhances information utilization by integrating multi-scale receptive fields, complementing feature advantages. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms various comparison methods, maintaining high classification accuracy across different sampling rates, thus validating its effectiveness and robustness. The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), as an active microwave imaging system, has the capability of all-weather and all-time observation. In response to the challenges of aircraft detection in SAR images due to the complex background interference caused by the continuous scattering of airport buildings and the demand for real-time processing, this paper proposes a YOLOv7-MTI recognition model that combines the attention mechanism and involution. By integrating the MTCN module and involution, performance is enhanced. The Multi-TASP-Conv network (MTCN) module aims to effectively extract low-level semantic and spatial information using a shared lightweight attention gate structure to achieve cross-dimensional interaction between “channels and space” with very few parameters, capturing the dependencies among multiple dimensions and improving feature representation ability. Involution helps the model adaptively adjust the weights of spatial positions through dynamic parameterized convolution kernels, strengthening the discrete strong scattering points specific to aircraft and suppressing the continuous scattering of the background, thereby alleviating the interference of complex backgrounds. Experiments on the SAR-AIRcraft-1.0 dataset, which includes seven categories such as A220, A320/321, A330, ARJ21, Boeing737, Boeing787, and others, show that the mAP and mRecall of YOLOv7-MTI reach 93.51% and 96.45%, respectively, outperforming Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8. Compared with the basic YOLOv7, mAP is improved by 1.47%, mRecall by 1.64%, and FPS by 8.27%, achieving an effective balance between accuracy and speed, providing research ideas for SAR aircraft recognition. The growth and sustainability of today’s global economy heavily relies on smooth maritime operations. The increasing security concerns to marine environments pose complex security challenges, such as smuggling, illegal fishing, human trafficking, and environmental threats, for traditional surveillance methods due to their limitations. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, has offered strong capabilities for automating object detection, anomaly identification, and situational awareness in maritime environments. In this paper, we have reviewed the state-of-the-art deep learning models mainly proposed in recent literature (2020–2025), including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, Transformers, and multimodal fusion architectures. We have highlighted their success in processing diverse data sources such as satellite imagery, AIS, SAR, radar, and sensor inputs from UxVs. Additionally, multimodal data fusion techniques enhance robustness by integrating complementary data, yielding more detection accuracy. There still exist challenges in detecting small or occluded objects, handling cluttered scenes, and interpreting unusual vessel behaviours, especially under adverse sea conditions. Additionally, explainability and real-time deployment of AI models in operational settings are open research areas. Overall, the review of existing maritime literature suggests that deep learning is rapidly transforming maritime domain awareness and response, with significant potential to improve global maritime security and operational efficiency. We have also provided key datasets for deep learning models in the maritime security domain. Full article

Accurate estimation of Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming (ISRJ) sampling duration is essential for effective radar anti-jamming. However, in complex electromagnetic environments, the simultaneous presence of suppressive and deceptive jamming, coupled with significant signal overlap in the time–frequency domain, renders ISRJ separation and parameter estimation considerably challenging. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a method utilizing the Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT) and a Hybrid Modality Fusion Network (HMFN) for ISRJ signal separation and sampling-duration estimation. The proposed method first employs FRFT and a time–frequency mask to separate the ISRJ and target echo from the mixed signal. This process effectively suppresses interference and extracts the ISRJ signal. Subsequently, an HMFN is employed for high-precision estimation of the ISRJ sampling duration, offering crucial parameter support for active electromagnetic countermeasures. Simulation results validate the performance of the proposed method. Specifically, even under strong interference conditions with a Signal-to-Jamming Ratio (SJR) of −5 dB for deceptive jamming and as low as −10 dB for suppressive jamming, the regression model’s coefficient of determination still reaches 0.91. This result clearly demonstrates the method’s robustness and effectiveness in complex electromagnetic environments. Full article

This paper proposes a novel automatic recognition method for distinguishing voids and severe loosening in road structures based on features of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) B-scan images. By analyzing differences in image texture, the intensity and clarity of top reflection interfaces, and the regularity of internal waveforms, a set of discriminative features is constructed. Based on these features, we develop the FKS-GPR dataset, a high-quality, manually annotated GPR dataset collected from real road environments, covering diverse and complex background conditions. Compared to datasets based on simulations, FKS-GPR offers higher practical relevance. An improved ACF-YOLO network is then designed for automatic detection, and the experimental results show that the proposed method achieves superior accuracy and robustness, validating its effectiveness and engineering applicability. To enhance the perception capability of radar in complex electromagnetic environments, this paper proposes an intelligent jamming recognition and parameter estimation method based on deep learning. The core idea of the method is to reformulate the jamming perception problem as an object detection task in computer vision, and we pioneer the application of oriented object detection to this problem, enabling simultaneous jamming classification and key parameter estimation. This method takes the time–frequency spectrogram of jamming signals as input. First, it employs the oriented object detection network YOLOv8-OBB (You Only Look Once Version 8–oriented bounding box) to identify three types of classic suppression jamming and five types of Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming (ISRJ) and outputs the positional information of the jamming in the time–frequency spectrogram. Second, for the five ISRJ types, a post-processing algorithm based on boxes fusion is designed to further extract features for secondary recognition. Finally, by integrating the detection box information and secondary recognition results, parameters of different ISRJ are estimated. In this paper, ablation experiments from the perspective of Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) are conducted to simulate and compare the OBB method with the traditional horizontal bounding box-based detection approaches, highlighting OBB’s detection superiority in dense jamming scenarios. Experimental results show that, compared with existing jamming detection methods, the proposed method achieves higher detection probabilities under the jamming-to-noise ratio (JNR) ranging from 0 to 20 dB, with correct identification rates exceeding 98.5% for both primary and secondary recognition stages. Moreover, benefiting from the advanced YOLOv8 network, the method exhibits an absolute error of less than 1.85% in estimating six types of jamming parameters, outperforming existing methods in estimation accuracy across different JNR conditions. This paper presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a dual-Circularly Polarized (CP) array antenna to be used as single element for a bistatic radar system, aimed at detecting and tracking objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The antenna operates at 412 MHz in reception mode and consists of an array of 19 slotted-patch radiating elements with a cavity-based metallic superstrate, designed to support dual circular polarization. These elements are arranged in a hexagonal configuration, enabling the array structure to achieve a maximum realized gain of 17 dBi and a Side Lobe Level (SLL) below −17 dB while maintaining high polarization purity. Two identical analog feeding networks enable the precise control of phase and amplitude, allowing the independent reception of Right-Hand and Left-Hand Circularly Polarized (RHCP and LHCP) signals. Full-wave simulations and experimental measurements confirm the high performance and robustness of the system, demonstrating its suitability for integration into large-scale Space Situational Awareness (SSA) sensor networks. We present mmHSE, a two-stage framework for human skeleton estimation using dual millimeter-Wave (mmWave) Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar signals. To enable data-driven model design and evaluation, we collect and process over 30,000 range–angle maps from 12 users across three representative indoor environments using a dual-node radar acquisition platform. Leveraging the collected data, we develop a two-stage neural architecture for human skeleton estimation. The first stage employs a dual-branch network with depthwise separable convolutions and self-attention to extract multi-scale spatiotemporal features from dual-view radar inputs. A cross-modal attention fusion module is then used to generate initial estimates of 21 skeletal keypoints. The second stage refines these estimates using a skeletal topology module based on graph convolutional networks, which captures spatial dependencies among joints to enhance localization accuracy. Experiments show that mmHSE achieves a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.78 cm. In cross-domain evaluations, the MAE remains at 3.14 cm, demonstrating the method’s generalization ability and robustness for non-intrusive human pose estimation from mmWave FMCW radar signals. Aiming at the problem that the anti-range-deception-jamming effect of a networked moving radar system is severely affected by the spatial distribution of each radar, an anti-range-deception-jamming method for networked moving radar based on trajectory optimization is proposed. Firstly, the anti-jamming method of networked moving radar considering the radar position error (RPE) is proposed. Then, the theoretical expression for the false target (FT) misjudgment probability of networked moving radar is deduced. Based on the theoretical expression, a trajectory optimization model is formulated to minimize FT misjudgment probability. Simulation experiments validate both the correctness of the derived probability expression and the significant influence of the radar spatial distribution position on the FT misjudgment probability. Moreover, the simulation results verify that the proposed anti-jamming method can effectively reduce the FT misjudgment probability of networked moving radar under the condition of a high discrimination probability of the physical target (PT). Breast cancer detection through non-invasive and accurate techniques remains a critical challenge in medical diagnostics. This study introduces a deep learning-based framework that leverages a microwave radar system equipped with an arc-shaped array of six antennas to estimate key tumor parameters, including position, size, and depth. This research begins with the evolutionary design of an ultra-wideband octagram ring patch antenna optimized for enhanced tumor detection sensitivity in directional near-field coupling scenarios. The antenna is fabricated and experimentally evaluated, with its performance validated through S-parameter measurements, far-field radiation characterization, and efficiency analysis to ensure effective signal propagation and interaction with breast tissue. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) distributions within breast tissues are comprehensively assessed, and power adjustment strategies are implemented to comply with electromagnetic exposure safety limits. The dataset for the deep learning model comprises simulated self and mutual S-parameters capturing tumor-induced variations over a broad frequency spectrum. A core innovation of this work is the development of the Attention-Based Feature Separation (ABFS) model, which dynamically identifies optimal frequency sub-bands and disentangles discriminative features tailored to each tumor parameter. A multi-branch neural network processes these features to achieve precise tumor localization and size estimation. Compared to conventional attention mechanisms, the proposed ABFS architecture demonstrates superior prediction accuracy and interpretability. The proposed approach achieves high estimation accuracy and computational efficiency in simulation studies, underscoring the promise of integrating deep learning with conformal microwave imaging for safe, effective, and non-invasive breast cancer detection. In this study, four types of fall detection systems for seniors living alone using x-y scatter and Doppler range images measured from frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave (mmWave) sensors were introduced. Despite advancements in fall detection, existing long short-term memory (LSTM)-based approaches often struggle with effectively distinguishing falls from similar activities of daily living (ADLs) due to their uniform treatment of all time steps, potentially overlooking critical motion cues. To address this limitation, an attention mechanism has been integrated. Data was collected from seven participants, resulting in a dataset of 669 samples, including 285 falls and 384 ADLs with walking, lying, inactivity, and sitting. Four LSTM-based architectures for fall detection were proposed and evaluated: Raw-LSTM, Raw-LSTM-Attention, HOG-LSTM, and HOG-LSTM-Attention. The histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) method was used for feature extraction, while LSTM networks captured temporal dependencies. The attention mechanism further enhanced model performance by focusing on relevant input features. The Raw-LSTM model processed raw mmWave radar images through LSTM layers and dense layers for classification. The Raw-LSTM-Attention model extended Raw-LSTM with an added self-attention mechanism within the traditional attention framework. The HOG-LSTM model included an additional preprocessing step upon the RAW-LSTM model where HOG features were extracted and classified using an SVM. The HOG-LSTM-Attention model built upon the HOG-LSTM model by incorporating a self-attention mechanism to enhance the model’s ability to accurately classify activities. Evaluation metrics such as Sensitivity, Precision, Accuracy, and F1-Score were used to compare four architectural models. The results showed that the HOG-LSTM-Attention model achieved the highest performance, with an Accuracy of 95.3% and an F1-Score of 95.5%. Optimal self-attention configuration was found at a 2:64 ratio of number of attention heads to channels for keys and queries. Full article

Evaluating Geostatistical and Statistical Merging Methods for Radar–Gauge Rainfall Integration: A Multi-Method Comparative Study

Accurate and spatially consistent rainfall estimation is essential for hydrological modeling and flood risk mitigation, especially in mountainous tropical regions with sparse observational networks and highly heterogeneous rainfall. This study presents a comparative analysis of six radar–gauge merging methods, including three statistical approaches—Quantile Adaptive Gaussian (QAG), Empirical Quantile Mapping (EQM), and radial basis function (RBF)—and three geostatistical approaches—external drift kriging (EDK), Bayesian Kriging (BAK), and Residual Kriging (REK). The evaluation was conducted over the Huong River Basin in Central Vietnam, a region characterized by steep terrain, monsoonal climate, and frequent hydrometeorological extremes. Two observational scenarios were established: Scenario S1 utilized 13 gauges for merging and 7 for independent validation, while Scenario S2 employed all 20 stations. Hourly radar and gauge data from peak rainy months were used for the evaluation. Each method was assessed using continuous metrics (RMSE, MAE, CC, NSE, and KGE), categorical metrics (POD and CSI), and spatial consistency indicators. Results indicate that all merging methods significantly improved the accuracy of rainfall estimates compared to raw radar data. Among them, RBF consistently achieved the highest accuracy, with the lowest RMSE (1.24 mm/h), highest NSE (0.954), and strongest spatial correlation (CC = 0.978) in Scenario S2. RBF also maintained high classification skills across all rainfall categories, including very heavy rain. EDK and BAK performed better with denser gauge input but required recalibration of variogram parameters. EQM and REK yielded moderate performance and had limitations near basin boundaries where gauge coverage was sparse. The results highlight trade-offs between method complexity, spatial accuracy, and robustness. While complex methods like EDK and BAK offer detailed spatial outputs, they require more calibration. Simpler methods are easier to apply across different conditions. RBF emerged as the most practical and transferable option, offering strong generalization, minimal calibration needs, and computational efficiency. These findings provide useful guidance for integrating radar and gauge data in flood-prone, data-scarce regions. Full article

A Hybrid Human-AI Model for Enhanced Automated Vulnerability Scoring in Modern Vehicle Sensor Systems

Modern vehicles are rapidly transforming into interconnected cyber–physical systems that rely on advanced sensor technologies and pervasive connectivity to support autonomous functionality. Yet, despite this evolution, standardized methods for quantifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities across critical automotive components remain scarce. This paper introduces a novel hybrid model that integrates expert-driven insights with generative AI tools to adapt and extend the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) specifically for autonomous vehicle sensor systems. Following a three-phase methodology, the study conducted a systematic review of 16 peer-reviewed sources (2018–2024), applied CVSS version 4.0 scoring to 15 representative attack types, and evaluated four free source generative AI models—ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, and Copilot—on a dataset of 117 annotated automotive-related vulnerabilities. Expert validation from 10 domain professionals reveals that Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors are the most vulnerable (9 distinct attack types), followed by Radio Detection And Ranging (radar) (8) and ultrasonic (6). Network-based attacks dominate (104 of 117 cases), with 92.3% of the dataset exhibiting low attack complexity and 82.9% requiring no user interaction. The most severe attack vectors, as scored by experts using CVSS, include eavesdropping (7.19), Sybil attacks (6.76), and replay attacks (6.35). Evaluation of large language models (LLMs) showed that DeepSeek achieved an F1 score of 99.07% on network-based attacks, while all models struggled with minority classes such as high complexity (e.g., ChatGPT F1 = 0%, Gemini F1 = 15.38%). The findings highlight the potential of integrating expert insight with AI efficiency to deliver more scalable and accurate vulnerability assessments for modern vehicular systems.This study offers actionable insights for vehicle manufacturers and cybersecurity practitioners, aiming to inform strategic efforts to fortify sensor integrity, optimize network resilience, and ultimately enhance the cybersecurity posture of next-generation autonomous vehicles.
