This paper proposes a cascaded state estimation framework based on proprioception for robots. A generalized-momentum-based Kalman filter (GMKF) estimates the ground reaction forces at the feet through joint torques, which are then input into an error-state Kalman filter (ESKF) to obtain the robot’s prior state estimate. The system’s dynamic equations on the Lie group are parameterized using canonical coordinates of the first kind, and variations in the tangent space are mapped to the Lie algebra via the inverse of the right trivialization. The resulting parameterized system state equations, combined with the prior estimates and a sliding window, are formulated as a moving horizon estimation (MHE) problem, which is ultimately solved using a parallel real-time iteration (Para-RTI) technique. The proposed framework operates on manifolds, providing a tightly coupled estimation with higher accuracy and real-time performance, and is better suited to handle the impact noise during foot–ground contact in legged robots. Experiments were conducted on the BQR3 robot, and comparisons with measurements from a Vicon motion capture system validate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

Background: Prevention and clinical management of musculoskeletal injuries have historically focused on the assessment and training of modifiable physical factors, but perceptual decision-making has only recently been recognized as a potentially important capability. Immersive virtual reality (VR) systems can measure the speed, accuracy, and consistency of body movements corresponding to stimulus–response instructions for the completion of a forced-choice task. Methods: A cohort of 26 female college soccer players (age 19.5 ± 1.3 years) included 10 players who participated in a baseline assessment, 10 perceptual-response training (PRT) sessions, a post-training assessment that preceded the first soccer practice, and a post-season assessment. The remaining 16 players completed an assessment prior to the team’s first pre-season practice session, and a post-season assessment. The assessments and training sessions involved left- or right-directed neck rotation, arm reach, and step-lunge reactions to 40 presentations of different types of horizontally moving visual stimuli. The PRT program included 4 levels of difficulty created by changes in initial stimulus location, addition of distractor stimuli, and increased movement speed, with ≥90% response accuracy used as the criterion for training progression. Perceptual latency (PL) was defined as the time elapsed from stimulus appearance to initiation of neck rotation toward a peripheral virtual target. The speed–accuracy tradeoff was represented by Rate Correct per Second (RCS) of PL, and inconsistency across trials derived from their standard deviation for PL was represented by intra-individual variability (IIV). Perceptual Decision Efficiency (PDE) represented the ratio of RCS to IIV, which provided a single value representing speed, accuracy, and consistency. Statistical procedures included the bivariate correlation between RCS and IIV, dependent t-test comparisons of pre- and post-training metrics, repeated measures analysis of variance for group X session pre- to post-season comparisons, receiver operating characteristic analysis, and Kaplan–Meier time to injury event analysis. Results: Statistically significant (p < 0.05) results were found for pre- to post-training change, and pre-season to post-season group differences, for RCS, IIV, and PDE. An inverse logarithmic relationship was found between RCS and IIV (Spearman’s Rho = −0.795). The best discriminator between injured and non-injured statuses was PDE ≤ 21.6 (93% Sensitivity; 42% Specificity; OR = 9.29). Conclusions: The 10-session PRT program produced significant improvement in perceptual decision-making that appears to provide a transfer benefit, as the PDE metric provided good prospective prediction of musculoskeletal injury. In order to solve the zoom delay issue for high-magnification zoom optical systems, a voice coil motor (VCM) is used to achieve rapid zooming. In this paper, the structural design of VCMs is systematically analyzed through magnetic field numerical computations. Firstly, finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze magnetic field of single magnets, and simulations correspond to experimental results. Both FEM and equivalent magnetic charge (EMC) results confirm that increasing magnet thickness while reducing its lateral dimensions will contribute to magnetic enhancement. Furthermore, the influence of structural parameters VCM is analyzed, validating the yoke’s critical role in suppressing edge effects and optimizing magnetic circuit efficiency, and optimal yoke thickness and magnet width range are determined. Moreover, a simple EMC calculation method is proposed for rapid and accurate determination of the magnetic field distribution in the VCM air gap. Optimal structural parameters of VCM are determined for a 40× rapid zoom lens with cost and space limitations. Driving force Fdrive = 5.58 N is about 5 times the demand force Fd = 1.06 N, and the prototype fabrication of the rapid zoom lens is successfully accomplished. Moving group reaches 35.4 mm destination within 0.18 s, and photographs confirm that the rapid zoom system achieves 100-ms-level short/long-focus transition. Rapid zoom lens shows great potential in applications including security surveillance, industrial visual inspection, and intelligent logistics management. Full article

This article proposes a close reading of Rivers Solomon’s 2019 novella The Deep, a recent eco-story about water, memory, and survival. Solomon’s work is inspired by a song called “The Deep” from experimental hip-hop group clipping, a dark science fiction tale about the underwater-dwelling descendants of African women thrown off slave ships during the Middle Passage. This imaginative alternate history, or counter-mythology, was invented by the Detroit techno band Drexciya, which, in a series of releases between 1992 and 2002, tells us the story of an underwater realm in the mid-Atlantic, where merpeople and their descendants establish a utopian society in the sea, free from the war and racism on the surface. My analysis uses Saidiya Hartman’s “critical fabulation” to make productive sense of the gaps in the archive of trans-Atlantic slavery that silence the voices of enslaved women, listening to the voices of water to imagine not only what was but also what could be. Moreover, this article examines The Deep through a trajectory that moves from the ocean as a space that reproduces death only to the ocean as a generative force for posthuman and multispecies kinship. Using Black hydrocriticism, hydrofeminism, and econarratology, I will argue that this transition is made possible by the “despatialization” of the ocean—a concept introduced by Erin James—where the ocean is conceived not as a fixed or stable environment, but as a space in constant flux, defying stability, and the subsequent immersion in its waters. Background/Objectives: Sensory perception is influenced by internal neuronal variability and external noise. Neuromodulators such as norepinephrine (NE) regulate this variability by modulating excitation–inhibition balance, oscillatory dynamics, and interlaminar connectivity. While NE is known to modulate cortical gain, it remains unclear how it shapes sensory processing under noisy conditions. This study investigates how adrenergic modulation affects signal-to-noise processing and perceptual decision-making in the primary visual cortex (V1) of mice exposed to varying levels of visual noise. Methods: We performed in vivo local field potential (LFP) recordings from layers 2/3 and 4 of V1 in sedated mice to assess the impact of visual noise and systemic administration of atomoxetine, a NE reuptake inhibitor, on cortical signal processing. In a separate group of freely moving mice, we used a two-alternative forced-choice to evaluate the behavioral effects of systemic and intracortical adrenergic manipulations on visual discrimination. Results: Moderate visual noise enhanced cortical signal processing and visual choices, consistent with stochastic resonance. High noise levels impaired both. Systemic atomoxetine administration flattened the cortical signal-to-noise ratio function, suggesting disrupted gain control. Behaviorally, clonidine impaired accuracy at moderate noise levels, while atomoxetine reduced discrimination performance and increased response variability. Intracortical NE infusions produced similar effects. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that NE regulates the balance between signal amplification and noise suppression in a noise- and context-dependent manner. These results extend existing models of neuromodulatory function by linking interlaminar communication and cortical variability to perceptual decision-making. Full article

This study was conducted to objectively evaluate the degree of detangling needed to develop the effectiveness of cosmetic hair ingredients to prevent hair tangles. To evaluate the degree of hair tangling, the frictional force applied when combing the hair was measured. The tooth spacing of the comb used in the evaluation was examined, and it was confirmed that the 4 mm interval comb was suitable as there was a large difference in combability between different treatments and the deviation was small. To create samples to standardize hair tangles, spinning 25 cm or more of wet hair on a spinner for 5 min was found to be best for observing differences between treatments. In the case of hair shorter than 25 cm, tangles did not occur even when spun using a tool, but a suitable sample for evaluating tangles was obtained by rubbing the hair by hand about 15 times. When testing combability, the distance the comb moves until it reaches 9.8 N is considered to be proportional to the detangling efficacy, and the degree of tangling is evaluated based on the section detangling rate, which is the distance the comb travels to reach 9.8 N divided by the total tress length. As a result of evaluating the contact angle of tangled hair using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), it was found that the contact angle of the cuticle surface for the tangled part was larger than that of the straight part and the cuticle was damaged. After immersing tangled hair in rice bran extract containing six OH groups, the contact angle changed from 103° to 95°, which is the level of the straight part, and an increase in the section detangling rate of the hair was observed. As a result, it was suggested that the detangling efficacy could be evaluated by applying this evaluation method using the section detangling rate. Full article

Relocating poor people in mountainous areas to centralized settlement sites is an important poverty alleviation policy implemented by China and a key measure to promote stable poverty alleviation and sustainable rural development for the poor. Based on the survey data of 405 peasant households in the Panxi Area in 2021, this study constructed a structural equation model (SEM) to explore the influencing factors of peasant households’ willingness to relocate to a concentrated residence. The results showed the following: (1) Of the 405 peasant households surveyed, 20.98% were unwilling to move to centralized resettlement sites, making it more difficult to carry out the relocation policy for poverty alleviation. (2) Living environment, living conditions, important social groups, the economic benefits, living benefits, and survival benefits brought by concentrated residences, governments, and the village committees significantly influenced the willingness to relocate to a concentrated residence. In contrast, agricultural income, ecological benefits, and value benefits brought by the concentrated residence had little effect on the willingness to relocate to a concentrated residence. (3) Land force, human force, cognitive force, and national force significantly positively affected the peasant households’ willingness to relocate to a concentrated residence. This study is of great significance in promoting the implementation of poverty alleviation and relocation policy, improving the efficiency of relocation and promoting the wellbeing of peasant households. This study aimed to optimize space closure efficiency by comparing the forces and moments exerted by different designs of clear aligners (CAs) during the movement of maxillary canines into the premolar extraction space. The forces and moments were measured using a multi-axis force/moment transducer on the maxillary right canine. The CAs were fabricated from thermoformed polyethylene terephthalate glycol. The following four edentulous space designs were tested: the edentulous space was left intact (Group 1); the edentulous space was replaced with a premolar pontic (Group 2); the edentulous space was replaced with a half-sized premolar pontic (Group 3); and the edentulous space was replaced with a rectangular column beam (Group 4). The maxillary right canine was moved 0.25 mm distally. All groups experienced buccodistal and intrusive forces; compared with the other groups, Group 1 showed significantly greater intrusive and smaller distal forces, and Group 4 showed significantly greater distal forces. All groups experienced distal tilting, lingual inclination, and mesial rotational moments. These findings suggest that modifying the thickness and extent of the adjacent teeth in the edentulous area of the CA can improve local stiffness, thereby reducing the tipping of the teeth into the edentulous space. This study emphasizes the importance of the CA design in controlling forces and moments for effective orthodontic treatment. Full article

Maglev vehicles apply the entire vehicle load uniformly onto bridges through levitation forces. In assessing the dynamic characteristics of the maglev train–bridge coupling system, it is reasonable to simplify the distributed levitation force as a concentrated force. This article theoretically derives the analytical response of bridge dynamics under the action of a single constant force and conducts numerical simulations for a moving single constant force and a series of equally spaced constant forces passing over simply supported beams and two-span continuous beams, respectively. The topic of discussion is the response of bridge dynamics when different degrees of force concentration are involved. High-precision displacement and acceleration sensors were utilized to conduct tests on the Shanghai maglev line to verify the accuracy of the simulation results. The results indicate that when simplifying the distributed levitation force into a concentrated force model, a frequency ratio can be used to analyze the conditions for resonance between the train and the bridge and to calculate the critical speed of the train; the levitation distribution force of a high-speed maglev vehicle can be simplified into four groups of concentrated forces based on the number of levitation frames to achieve sufficient accuracy, with the dynamic response of the bridge being close to that under distributed loads. The destructive forces of tropical cyclones can have significant impacts on the land, contributing to degradation through various mechanisms such as erosion, debris, loss of vegetation, and widespread damage to infrastructure. Storm surge and flooding can wash away buildings and other structures, deposit debris and sediments, and contaminate freshwater resources, making them unsuitable for both human use and agriculture. High winds and flooding often damage electrical disubstations and transformers, leading to disruptions in electricity supply. Restoration can take days or even weeks, depending on the extent of the damage and the resources available. In the meantime, communities affected by power outages may experience difficulties accessing essential services and maintaining communication. In this study, we used a weighted maximum likelihood classification algorithm to reclassify NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey Emergency Response Imagery scenes into debris, sand, water, trees, and roofs to assess the extent of the damage around Mexico Beach, Florida, following the 2018 Hurricane Michael. NASA’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) was processed to estimate power outage duration and rate of restoration in the Florida Panhandle based on the 7-day moving averages. Percent loss of electrical service at a neighborhood level was estimated using the 2013–2017 American Community Survey block group data. Spatial lag models were employed to examine the association between restoration rates and socioeconomic factors. The analysis revealed notable differences in power-restoration rates between urbanized and rural areas and between disadvantaged and more affluent communities. The findings indicated that block groups with higher proportions of minorities, multi-family housing units, rural locations, and households receiving public assistance experienced slower restoration of power compared to urban and more affluent neighborhoods. These results underscore the importance of integrating socioeconomic factors into disaster preparedness and recovery-planning efforts, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to mitigate disparities in recovery times following natural disasters. Background: Incisor retraction is often a crucial phase in ongoing orthodontic treatment, with significant implications for alveolar remodeling mechanisms. There are two prevailing theories which seek to explain this. According to the first, teeth move with the bone, while according to the second, teeth move within the bone. This systematic review seeks to assess morphometric changes in the maxillary alveolar process resulting from incisor retraction following premolar extraction and to evaluate the potential for bone remodeling associated with orthodontic movement. Methods: The study was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The following electronic databases were searched: PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The databases were searched using the following keywords: “Bone remodeling and retraction of incisors”, “Alveolar bone and incisor retraction”, “Bone thickness and incisor retraction”, and “Bone changes and orthodontic treatment”. Search filters were utilized to identify relevant papers and articles written in English and published during the last 10 years. Based on the information provided in their abstracts, papers and articles were selected according to the following criteria: randomized clinical trials (RCTs), controlled clinical prospective trials (CCTs), and retrospective studies. Articles unrelated to the study’s scope or failing to meet inclusion criteria were excluded. These generally comprised individual case reports, case series reports, literature reviews, experimental studies, studies with limited data (including conference abstracts and journal writings), studies involving an unrepresentative group of patients (less than 10 patients), studies concerning patients with syndromes, and animal experiments. The remaining articles which were deemed relevant underwent comprehensive reference review and such journals as the American Journal of Orthodontics, Dentofacial Orthopedics, International Orthodontics, Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, and Angle Orthodontist were manually searched. Results: Seven articles meeting the inclusion criteria articles were selected for final evaluation, with a total of 284 participants, including 233 women and 51 men. During the analysis of the results included in the publications, a lack of homogeneity was observed, rendering a reliable statistical analysis and heterogeneity assessment unobtainable. Noteworthy disparities in methodologies and measurements posed a risk of drawing inappropriate conclusions. Consequently, emphasis was placed on qualitative analysis, emphasizing the need for standardization in future studies of a similar nature, to enable valid and comparable analyses. Conclusions: The research findings incorporated in this review demonstrate that significant bone loss occurs because of incisor retraction, which diminishes distance between the bone surface and the root surface on the palatal aspect. The magnitude of this change may vary, contingent upon both the extent of incisor displacement and alterations in their inclination, thereby affecting the positioning of the root tips. This change is significantly higher in adults than in growing adolescents. The rationale behind this assertion lies in the widely recognized phenomenon of declining cellular activity with advancing age. The decrease in the speed and intensity of cellular changes may explain the diminished capacity for remodeling as patient age increases. There is ongoing discourse regarding alterations in the volume of bone on the labial aspect of the alveolar process. Further research is necessary to measure whether bone remodeling during orthodontic movement is contingent upon other factors, such as the speed and biomechanics of retraction, the level of applied orthodontic force, and the patient age. Fluoroscopy has always been the cornerstone imaging method of interventional cardiology procedures. However, radiation exposure is linked to an increased risk of malignancies and multiorgan diseases. The medical team is even more exposed to X-rays, and a higher incidence of malignancies was reported in this professional group. In the last years, X-ray exposure has increased rapidly, involving, above all, the medical team and young patients and forcing alternative fluoroless imaging methods. In cardiac electrophysiology (EP) and pacing, the advent of 3D electroanatomic mapping systems with dedicated catheters has allowed real-time, high-density reconstruction of both heart anatomy and electrical activity, significantly reducing the use of fluoroscopy. In addition, the diffusion of intracardiac echocardiography has provided high anatomical resolution of moving cardiac structures, providing intraprocedural guidance for more complex catheter ablation procedures. These methods have largely demonstrated safety and effectiveness, allowing for a dramatic reduction in X-ray delivery in most arrhythmias’ ablations. However, some technical concerns, as well as higher costs, currently do not allow their spread out in EP labs and limit their use to only procedures that are considered highly complex and time-consuming and in young patients. In this review, we aim to update the current employment of fluoroless imaging in different EP procedures, focusing on its strengths and weaknesses. Full article

A combined experimental and molecular dynamic simulation approach was used to examine the structure and interfacial properties of solute-saturated micelles. The properties of dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) micelles were examined in dodecane and benzene hydrocarbon systems. Pyrene fluorescence was used to determine the aggregation number of surfactant monomers in the micelle systems. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations using energy minimization applying the CHARMm force field with the TIP3P model for water. Comparison of the DBS/benzene and DBS/Dodecane micelles equilibrium structures via radial distribution function (RDF) and probability distribution function (PDF) analysis indicates that the area per head group for the DBS/Benzene micelle interface is significantly larger than that of the DBS/Dodecane at the interface. It was also determined that benzene molecules can move freely within the micelle while dodecane is strictly confined in the core of the micelle. The increased interfacial area per monomer caused by the insertion of benzene also reduces the effectiveness of the surfactant, which has implications for use in various environmental applications. However, the DBS/benzene micelle can solubilize many more hydrocarbon molecules in one micelle with less surfactant monomer (i.e., lower aggregation number) per micelle due to the increased available packing positions within the micelle. This, in turn, increases the efficiency of the surfactant in real-world applications which is consistent with previous laboratory results. Understanding the differing solubilization characteristics of surfactants against various classes of hydrocarbons in single solute systems is a necessary step to beginning to understand their solubilization properties in the mixed waste systems prevalent in most surfactant enhanced remediation (SEAR) strategies. Bionic-legged robots draw inspiration from animal locomotion methods and structures, demonstrating the potential to traverse irregular and unstructured environments. The ability of Portunus trituberculatus (Portunus) to run flexibly and quickly in amphibious environments inspires the design of systems and locomotion methods for amphibious robots. This research describes an amphibious crab-like robot based on Portunus and designs a parallel leg mechanism for the robot based on biological observations. The research creates the group and sequential gait commonly used in multiped robots combined with the form of the robot’s leg mechanism arrangement. This research designed the parallel leg mechanism and modeled its dynamics. Utilizing the outcomes of the dynamics modeling, we calculate the force and torque exerted on each joint of the leg mechanism during group gait and sequential gait when the robot is moving with a load. This analysis aims to assess the performance of the robot’s motion. Finally, a series of performance evaluation experiments are conducted on land and underwater, which show that the amphibious crab-like robot has good walking performance. The crab-like robot can perform forward, backward, left, and right walking well using group and sequential gaits. Simultaneously, the crab-like robot showcases faster movement in group gaits and a more substantial load capacity in sequential gaits. Full article

The rehabilitation process after the onset of a stroke primarily deals with assisting in regaining mobility, communication skills, swallowing function, and activities of daily living (ADLs). This entirely depends on the specific regions of the brain that have been affected by the stroke. Patients can learn how to utilize adaptive equipment, regain movement, and reduce muscle spasticity through certain repetitive exercises and therapeutic interventions. These exercises can be performed by wearing soft robotic gloves on the impaired extremity. For post-stroke rehabilitation, we have designed and characterized an interactive hand orthosis with tendon-driven finger actuation mechanisms actuated by servo motors, which consists of a fabric glove and force-sensitive resistors (FSRs) at the tip. The robotic device moves the user’s hand when operated by mobile phone to replicate normal gripping behavior. In this paper, the characterization of finger movements in response to step input commands from a mobile app was carried out for each finger at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP), distal interphalangeal (DIP), and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. In general, servo motor-based hand orthoses are energy-efficient; however, they generate noise during actuation. Here, we quantified the noise generated by servo motor actuation for each finger as well as when a group of fingers is simultaneously activated. To test ADL ability, we evaluated the device’s effectiveness in holding different objects from the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) kit. Our device, novel hand orthosis actuated by servo motors (NOHAS), was tested on ten healthy human subjects and showed an average of 90% success rate in grasping tasks. Our orthotic hand shows promise for aiding post-stroke subjects recover because of its simplicity of use, lightweight construction, and carefully designed components. Full article
