The integration of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and mobile technologies can transform science education, offering experimentation opportunities to students from budget-constrained schools. This study investigates the efficacy of smartphone-assisted experimentation (SAE) within IBL to enhance pre-service science teachers’ understanding of human physiology and presents a newly developed and validated rubric for assessing their scientific skills. Students (N = 286) from a Science and Mathematics Teacher Education Program participated in a summative IBL activity (“Investigating the Human Physiology”—iHPhys) where they designed experimental projects using smartphone applications to collect body sign data. The scoring rubric, assessing seven criteria including hypothesis formulation, methodological design, data presentation, and conclusion writing, was validated as substantial to almost perfect inter-rater reliability. Results reveal that students exhibited strong skills in hypothesis clarity, theoretical grounding, and experimental design, with a high degree of methodological innovation observed. However, challenges persisted in predictive reasoning and evidence-based conclusion writing. The students were strongly interested in inquiring about the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Correlational analyses suggest a positive relationship between project originality and overall academic performance. Thus, integrating SAE and IBL fosters critical scientific competencies, creativity, and epistemic cognition while democratizing access to scientific experimentation and engaging students in tech-savvy pedagogical practices. The shift from Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs) to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) has accelerated global efforts to decarbonize transportation. However, battery degradation, high costs, and limited lifespan remain critical barriers. This review synthesizes recent innovations to extend Li-ion battery life in BEVs by exploring advances in degradation modeling, adaptive Battery Management Systems (BMSs), electronic component simulations, and real-world usage profiling. The authors have systematically analyzed over 80 recent studies using a PRISMA-guided review protocol. A novel comparative framework highlights gaps in current literature, particularly regarding real-world driving impacts, ripple current effects, and second-life battery applications. This review article critically compares model-driven, data-driven, and hybrid model approaches, emphasizing trade-offs in interpretability, accuracy, and deployment feasibility. Finally, the review links battery life extension to broader sustainability metrics, including circular economy models and predictive maintenance algorithms. This review offers actionable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers aiming to design longer-lasting and more sustainable electric mobility systems. Full article

The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) and new energy systems has put lithium-ion batteries at the center of the clean energy change. Nevertheless, to achieve the best battery performance, safety, and sustainability in many changing circumstances, major innovations are needed in Battery Management Systems (BMS). This review paper explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin (DT) technologies can be integrated to enable the intelligent BMS of the future. It investigates how powerful data approaches such as deep learning, ensembles, and models that rely on physics improve the accuracy of predicting state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and remaining useful life (RUL). Additionally, the paper reviews progress in AI features for cooling, fast charging, fault detection, and intelligible AI models. Working together, cloud and edge computing technology with DTs means better diagnostics, predictive support, and improved management for any use of EVs, stored energy, and recycling. The review underlines recent successes in AI-driven material research, renewable battery production, and plans for used systems, along with new problems in cybersecurity, combining data and mass rollout. We spotlight important research themes, existing problems, and future drawbacks following careful analysis of different up-to-date approaches and systems. Uniting physical modeling with AI-based analytics on cloud-edge-DT platforms supports the development of tough, intelligent, and ecologically responsible batteries that line up with future mobility and wider use of renewable energy. Based on a comprehensive review of the current research status of ecological compensation both domestically and internationally, combined with field survey data, this study delves into the issue of multi-stakeholder participation in the ecological compensation mechanisms of the Xin’an River Basin. This research reveals that the joint participation of multiple stakeholders is crucial to achieving the goals of ecological compensation in river basins. The government plays a significant role in macro-guidance, financial support, policy guarantees, supervision, and management. It promotes the comprehensive implementation of ecological environmental protection by formulating relevant laws and regulations, guiding the public to participate in ecological conservation, and supervising and punishing pollution behaviors. The public, serving as the main force, forms strong awareness and behavioral habits of ecological protection through active participation in environmental protection, monitoring, and feedback. As participants, enterprises contribute to industrial transformation and green development by improving resource utilization efficiency, reducing pollution emissions, promoting green industries, and participating in ecological restoration projects. Scientific research institutions, as technology enablers, have effectively enhanced governance efficiency through technological research and innovation, ecosystem value accounting to provide decision-making support, and public education. Social organizations, as facilitators, have injected vitality and innovation into watershed governance by extensively mobilizing social forces and building multi-party collaboration platforms. Communities, as supporters, have transformed ecological value into economic benefits by developing characteristic industries such as eco-agriculture and eco-tourism. Based on the above findings, further recommendations are proposed to mobilize the enthusiasm of upstream communities and encourage their participation in ecological compensation, promote the market-oriented operation of ecological compensation mechanisms, strengthen cross-regional cooperation to establish joint mechanisms, enhance supervision and evaluation, and establish a sound benefit-sharing mechanism. These recommendations provide theoretical support and practical references for ecological compensation worldwide. Full article

Aiming to address the problems of asynchronous acquisition time of multiple sensors in the crop phenotype acquisition system and high cost of the acquisition equipment, this paper developed a low-cost crop phenotype synchronous acquisition system based on the PTP synchronization protocol, realizing the synchronous acquisition of three types of crop data: visible light images, thermal infrared images, and laser point clouds. The paper innovatively proposed the Difference Structural Similarity Index Measure (DSSIM) index, combined with statistical indicators (average point number difference, average coordinate error), distribution characteristic indicators (Charm distance), and Hausdorff distance to characterize the stability of the system. After 72 consecutive hours of synchronization testing on the timing boards, it was verified that the root mean square error of the synchronization time for each timing board reached the ns level. The synchronous trigger acquisition time for crop parameters under time synchronization was controlled at the microsecond level. Using pepper as the crop sample, 133 consecutive acquisitions were conducted. The acquisition success rate for the three phenotypic data types of pepper samples was 100%, with a DSSIM of approximately 0.96. The average point number difference and average coordinate error were both about 3%, while the Charm distance and Hausdorff distance were only 1.14 mm and 5 mm. This system can provide hardware support for multi-parameter acquisition and data registration in the fast mobile crop phenotype platform, laying a reliable data foundation for crop growth monitoring, intelligent yield analysis, and prediction. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear protein that can interact with a transmembrane cell surface receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGEs) and mediates the inflammatory pathways that lead to various pathological conditions like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. Blocking the HMGB1/RAGE axis using various small synthetic or natural molecules has been proven to be an effective therapeutic approach to treating these inflammatory conditions. However, the low water solubility of these pharmacoactive molecules limits their clinical use. Pharmaceutically active molecules with low solubility and bioavailability in vivo convey a higher risk of failure for drug development and drug innovation. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics parameters of these compounds are majorly affected by their solubility. Enhancement of the bioavailability and solubility of drugs is a significant challenge in the area of pharmaceutical formulations. This review mainly describes various technologies utilized to improve the bioavailability of synthetic or natural molecules which have been particularly used in various inflammatory conditions acting specifically through the HMGB1/RAGE pathway. Mobile Banking Adoption: A Multi-Factorial Study on Social Influence, Compatibility, Digital Self-Efficacy, and Perceived Cost Among Generation Z Consumers in the United States

The introduction of mobile banking is essential in today’s financial sector, where technological innovation plays a critical role. To remain competitive in the current market, businesses must analyze client attitudes and perspectives, as these influence long-term demand and overall profitability. While previous studies have explored general adoption behaviors, limited research has examined how individual factors such as social influence, lifestyle compatibility, financial technology self-efficacy, and perceived usage cost affect mobile banking adoption among specific generational cohorts. This study addresses that gap by offering insights into these variables, contributing to the growing literature on mobile banking adoption, and presenting actionable recommendations for financial institutions targeting younger market segments. Using a structured questionnaire survey, data were collected from both users and non-users of mobile banking among the Gen Z population in the United States. The regression model significantly predicts mobile banking adoption, with an intercept of 0.548 (p < 0.001). Among the independent variables, perceived cost of usage has the strongest positive effect on adoption (B=0.857, β=0.722, p < 0.001), suggesting that adoption increases when mobile banking is perceived as more affordable. Social influence also has a significant positive impact (B=0.642, β=0.643, p < 0.001), indicating that peer influence is a central driver of adoption decisions. However, self-efficacy shows a significant negative relationship (B=0.343, β=0.339, p < 0.001), and lifestyle compatibility was found to be statistically insignificant (p=0.615). These findings suggest that reducing perceived costs, through lower fees, data bundling, or clearer communication about affordability, can directly enhance adoption among Gen Z consumers. Furthermore, leveraging peer influence via referral rewards, Partnerships with influencers, and in-app social features can increase user adoption. Since digital self-efficacy presents a barrier for some, banks should prioritize simplifying user interfaces and offering guided assistance, such as tutorials or chat-based support. Future research may employ longitudinal designs or analyze real-life transaction data for a more objective understanding of behavior. Additional variables like trust, perceived risk, and regulatory policies, not included in this study, should be integrated into future models to offer a more comprehensive analysis. Full article

Previous reviews have examined specific facets of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in transportation planning, such as transit-focused applications and open source geospatial tools. However, this study offers the first systematic, PRISMA-guided longitudinal evaluation of GIS integration in transportation planning, spanning thematic domains, data models, methodologies, and outcomes from 2004 to 2024. This study addresses this gap through a longitudinal analysis of GIS-based transportation research from 2004 to 2024, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. By conducting a mixed-methods analysis of 241 peer-reviewed articles, this study delineates major trends, such as increased emphasis on sustainability, equity, stakeholder involvement, and the incorporation of advanced technologies. Prominent domains include land use–transportation coordination, accessibility, artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring, and policy evaluation. Expanded data sources, such as real-time sensor feeds and 3D models, alongside sophisticated modeling techniques, enable evidence-based, multifaceted decision-making. However, challenges like data limitations, ethical concerns, and the need for specialized expertise persist, particularly in developing regions. Future geospatial innovations should prioritize the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, inclusive capacity building, and environmental justice to foster equitable and efficient transportation systems. This review highlights GIS’s evolution from a supplementary tool to a cornerstone of data-driven, sustainable urban mobility planning, offering insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to advance transportation strategies that align with equity and sustainability goals. In the era of smart agriculture, accurate identification of plant species is critical for effective crop management, biodiversity monitoring, and the sustainable use of medicinal resources. However, existing deep learning approaches often underperform when applied to fine-grained plant classification tasks due to the lack of domain-specific, high-quality datasets and the limited representational capacity of traditional architectures. This study addresses these challenges by introducing a novel, well-curated leaf image dataset consisting of 39 classes of medicinal and aromatic plants collected from the Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Research Station in Odakkali, Kerala, India. To overcome performance bottlenecks observed with a baseline Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that achieved only 44.94% accuracy, we progressively enhanced model performance through a series of architectural innovations. These included the use of a pre-trained VGG16 network, data augmentation techniques, and fine-tuning of deeper convolutional layers, followed by the integration of Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention blocks. Ultimately, we propose a hybrid deep learning architecture that combines VGG16 with Batch Normalization, Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs), Transformer modules, and Dilated Convolutions. This final model achieved a peak validation accuracy of 95.24%, significantly outperforming several baseline models, such as custom CNN (44.94%), VGG-19 (59.49%), VGG-16 before augmentation (71.52%), Xception (85.44%), Inception v3 (87.97%), VGG-16 after data augumentation (89.24%), VGG-16 after fine-tuning (90.51%), MobileNetV2 (93.67), and VGG16 with SE block (94.94%). These results demonstrate superior capability in capturing both local textures and global morphological features. The proposed solution not only advances the state of the art in plant classification but also contributes a valuable dataset to the research community. Its real-world applicability spans field-based plant identification, biodiversity conservation, and precision agriculture, offering a scalable tool for automated plant recognition in complex ecological and agricultural environments. The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Background: Since the election of Hamas in 2006, Gaza has endured eight major military conflicts, culminating in the ongoing 2023–2025 war, now surpassing 520 days. This protracted violence, compounded by a 17-year blockade, has resulted in the near-total collapse of Gaza’s health system. Over 49,000 deaths, widespread displacement, and the destruction of more than 60% of health infrastructure have overwhelmed both local capacity and international humanitarian response. Objectives: This narrative review aims to examine and synthesize the current literature (October 2023–April 2025) on the health crisis in Gaza, with a specific focus on identifying key themes and knowledge gaps relevant to rebuilding a sustainable health system. The review also seeks to outline strategic pathways for recovery in the context of ongoing conflict and systemic deprivation. Methods: Given the urgency and limitations of empirical data from conflict zones, a narrative review approach was adopted. Fifty-two sources—including peer-reviewed articles, editorials, reports, and correspondence—were selected through targeted searches using Medline and Google Scholar. The analysis was framed within a public health and political economy perspective, also taking health system building blocks into consideration. Results: The reviewed literature emphasizes emergency needs: trauma care, infectious disease control, and supply chain restoration. Innovations such as mobile clinics and telemedicine offer interim solutions. Gaps include limited attention to mental health (including that of health workers), local governance, and sustainable planning frameworks. Conclusions: Sustainable reconstruction requires a durable ceasefire; international stewardship aligned with local ownership; and a phased, equity-driven strategy emphasizing primary care, mental health, trauma management, and community engagement. Mobile Robot Path Planning Based on Fused Multi-Strategy White Shark Optimisation Algorithm

Addressing the limitations of existing path planning algorithms for mobile robots in complex environments, such as poor adaptability, low convergence efficiency, and poor path quality, this study establishes a clear connection between mobile robots and real-world challenges such as unknown environments, dynamic obstacle avoidance, and smooth motion through innovative strategies. A novel multi-strategy fusion white shark optimization algorithm is proposed, focusing on actual scenario requirements, to provide optimal solutions for mobile robot path planning. First, the Chaotic Elite Pool strategy is employed to generate an elite population, enhancing population diversity and improving the quality of initial solutions, thereby boosting the algorithm’s global search capability. Second, adaptive weights are introduced, and the traditional simulated annealing algorithm is improved to obtain the Rapid Annealing Method. The improved simulated annealing algorithm is then combined with the White Shark algorithm to avoid getting stuck in local optima and accelerate convergence speed. Finally, third-order Bézier curves are used to smooth the path. Path length and path smoothness are used as fitness evaluation metrics, and an evaluation function is established in conjunction with a non-complete model that reflects actual motion to assess the effectiveness of path planning. Simulation results show that on the simple 20 × 20 grid map, the fusion of the Fused Multi-strategy White Shark Optimisation algorithm (FMWSO) outperforms WSO, D*, A*, and GWO by 8.43%, 7.37%, 2.08%, and 2.65%, respectively, in terms of path length. On the more complex 40 × 40 grid map, it improved by 6.48%, 26.76%, 0.95%, and 2.05%, respectively. The number of turning points was the lowest in both maps, and the path smoothness was lower. The algorithm’s runtime is optimal on the 20 × 20 map, outperforming other algorithms by 40.11%, 25.93%, 31.16%, and 9.51%, respectively. On the 40 × 40 map, it is on par with A*, and outperforms WSO, D*, and GWO by 14.01%, 157.38%, and 3.48%, respectively. The path planning performance is significantly better than other algorithms. Blended and virtual learning have become an integral part in international higher education, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the European Union’s Digital Education Action Plan. These modalities have enabled more inclusive, flexible, and sustainable forms of international collaboration, such as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and Blended Intensive Programs (BIPs), reshaping the landscape of global academic mobility. This paper introduces the INVITE Learning Design Framework (LDF), developed to support higher education instructors in designing high-quality, internationalized blended and virtual learning experiences. The framework addresses the growing need for structured, theory-informed approaches to course design that foster student engagement, intercultural competence, and motivation in non-face-to-face settings. The INVITE LDF was developed through a rigorous scoping review of existing models and frameworks, complemented by needs-identification analysis and desk research. It integrates Self-Determination Theory, Active Learning principles, and the ADDIE instructional design model to provide a comprehensive, adaptable structure for course development. The framework was successfully implemented in a large-scale online training module for over 1000 educators across Europe. Results indicate that the INVITE LDF enhances educators’ ability to create engaging, inclusive, and pedagogically sound international learning environments. Its application supports institutional goals of internationalization by making global learning experiences more accessible and scalable. The findings suggest that the INVITE LDF can serve as a valuable tool for higher education institutions worldwide, offering a replicable model for fostering intercultural collaboration and innovation in digital education. This contributes to the broader transformation of international higher education, promoting equity, sustainability, and global citizenship through digital pedagogies. Full article

This paper presents a qualitative case study on the design, implementation, and validation of the Art Nouveau Path, a mobile augmented reality game developed to foster sustainability competences through engagement with Aveiro’s Art Nouveau built heritage. Grounded in the GreenComp framework and developed through a Design-Based Research approach, the game integrates location-based interaction, narrative storytelling, and multimodal augmented reality and multimedia content to activate key competences such as systems thinking, futures literacy, and sustainability-oriented action. The game was validated with 33 in-service schoolteachers, both through a simulation-based training workshop and a curricular review of the game. A mixed-methods strategy was used, combining structured questionnaires, open-ended reflections, and curricular review. The findings revealed strong emotional and motivational engagement, interdisciplinary relevance, and alignment with formal education goals. Teachers emphasized the game’s capacity to connect local identity with global sustainability challenges through immersive and reflective experiences. Limitations pointed to the need for enhanced pedagogical scaffolding, clearer integration into STEAM subjects, and broader accessibility across technological contexts. This study demonstrates that these games, when grounded in competence-based frameworks and inclusive design, can meaningfully support multimodal, situated learning for sustainability and offer valuable contributions to pedagogical innovation in Education for Sustainable Development. This study aims to map the scientific knowledge of bank profitability and its determinants. It identifies trends and gaps in existing research through a bibliometric analysis. To this end, 634 documents published in the Web of Science database over the last 54 years were analyzed using the bibliometric package. The results indicate an increase in the volume of publications following the 2008 financial crisis, focusing on analyzing the factors influencing bank profitability and economic growth. The Journal of Banking and Finance is the preeminent publication in this field. The literature reviewed shows that bank profitability depends on internal factors (size, credit risk, liquidity, efficiency, and management) and external factors (such as GDP, inflation, interest rates, and unemployment). In addition to the traditional determinants, the recent literature highlights the importance of innovation and technological factors such as digitalization, mobile banking, and electronic payments as relevant to bank profitability. ESG (environmental, social, and governance) and governance indicators, which are still emerging but have been extensively researched in companies, indicate a need for evidence in this area. This paper also provides relevant insights for the formulation of monetary policy and the strategic formulation of banks, helping managers and owners to improve bank performance. It also provides directions for future empirical studies and research collaborations in this field. Full article
