The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to an increase in the number of product returns in supply chains, which is both environmentally and economically challenging. E-commerce companies need to effectively manage product returns, as this has a direct impact on their reputation and consumer experience. Reducing returns is key to maintaining sustainable practices for online product sales. A significant increase in e-commerce transactions is also evident in Indonesia, which is the fourth largest country in the world. Despite the very large size of the market, research on e-commerce in the business-to-customer (B2C) market in Indonesia is underrepresented in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to identify key factors from the customer perspective that influence product returns in reverse logistics in Indonesian e-commerce. The novelty of this study stems from the focus on the customer perspective on product returns in the B2C market when shopping online and the spatial scope. Due to the uncertainty inherent in multi-criteria decision making, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to rank factors and potential solutions derived from a critical literature review. As a result, the study provides a ranking of factors and alternatives for managing e-commerce returns in Indonesia. The results show that among Indonesian e-commerce customers, product quality (QP) was rated the highest, while (Pu) was rated the lowest. In terms of the alternatives that are the most suitable for improving the customer experience of e-commerce product returns in Indonesia, a clear returns policy (CRP) scored the highest, while the merchandise catalog (Cat) was rated as the lowest priority. Maritime transportation plays a critical role in global trade as it accounts for over 80% of all merchandise movement. Given the growing volume of maritime freight, it is vital to have an efficient system for handling ships and cargos at ports. The current first-come-first-serve method is insufficient in maintaining operational efficiency, especially under complicated conditions such as parallel scheduling with different cargo setups. In addition, in the face of rising demand, data-driven strategies are necessary. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a mixed-integer model for allocating quay cranes, terminals, and berths. It considers not only cargo types, but also the time required for a quay crane setup. The proposed model features a greedy-insert-based offline algorithm that optimizes berth allocation when vessel information is available. In situations where vessel information is uncertain, the model utilizes an online optimization strategy based on a reinforcement-learning algorithm that is capable of learning from feedback and of adapting quickly in real time. The results of the numerical experiments demonstrate that both the offline and online algorithms can significantly enhance cargo handling efficiency and overall harbor operation. Furthermore, they have the potential to be extended to other complex settings. Full article

Loss of production due to local water scarcity, i.e., Local Water Scarcity Risk (LWSR), is transferred downstream through international supply chains to distant economies, causing potential economic losses to countries and sectors that do not directly experience actual water scarcity, which is defined as Virtual Water Scarcity Risk (VWSR). Much research has focused on assessing VWSR and characterizing the structure of VWSR transfer networks, without explaining the formation and dynamics of VWSR transfer network patterns. In this study, the global VWSR transfer networks for 2001–2016 are then constructed based on a multi-regional input-output model and complex network theory. The determinants influencing the formation of VWSR transfer networks are further explored using the time-exponential random graph model. The results demonstrate that: (1) The VWSR transfer networks exhibit a distinctly small-world and heterogeneous nature; (2) Asia and Europe are the main targets of VWSR transfers, and Asia is also the main source of risks; (3) China and the USA play a leading role on the import side of VWSR, and India is the largest exporter of VWSR; (4) The evolution of VWSR transfer networks is significantly influenced by transitivity and stability. Countries located on the same continent, sharing geographical borders and having a higher level of economic development, have a facilitating effect on the formation and evolution of VWSR transfer networks. Countries with a higher share of merchandise trade are more inclined to receive VWSR inflows, while the urbanization rate has a restraining effect on VWSR outflows. The study provides a network-based insight that explores the structural evolution of VWSR transfer networks and the determinants of their formation, informing policy makers in developing strategies to mitigate the cascading spread of VWSR. (1) Background: the present research addresses sensory marketing to check its possible potential in making the consumer shopping experience in physical points of sale more sustainable and efficient, both for potential buyers and for the selling company. (2) Aims: the main purpose of this study is to check whether, by applying sensory marketing and merchandising techniques in a shop, the business can be more economically profitable and, thus, make it more sustainable. The main objective is, therefore, to find out how consumers respond to different communication strategies in an experimental men’s fashion shop located in a Spanish municipality. (3) Methodology: researchers adapted the so-called Sensory Marketing Model to a real case. Based on scientific evidence and documentary review, an experiment of implementation of sensory marketing tactics (visual, sound, olfactory and haptic) and its subsequent quantitative analysis based on the before-after, cause-effect relationship was carried out. (4) Results: the results obtained shed light on the importance of sensory marketing, as this study showed a considerable increase in sales, customer retention and customer satisfaction in the shop, following the deployment of appropriate sensory marketing strategies. (5) Conclusions: the Sensory Marketing Model is valid and reliable for implementation, not only to increase sales, but also to make the store more sustainable, as all actions carried out involved a decrease in material resources typical of retail shops. The intention of this paper is to provide new academic insights regarding an economically explainable valuation of transfer prices for European football players based on mathematical modeling. Football is the most popular sport in the world followed by approximately 3.5 billion people. The increasing commercialization and professionalization of the industry implies that every area of a football club is constantly put to the test for improvements. Especially after suffering financially under the consequences of the worldwide pandemic, clubs focus not only on sporting success but also on financial survival. Only financially stable clubs have the resources to be more successful. An expensive team does not have to be successful in terms of sports performance. However, a successful team in sports is expensive in the long run. Increasing digitalization offers new revenue potentials for football clubs that focus on selling merchandise in addition to gameday revenues and its media exploitation rights. However, player transfers have become increasingly important because these costs and revenues increased substantially in the relevance of a club’s financial situation. Regarding transfer costs, the question arises as to how transfer fees are determined and which factors have a major influence here. Clubs try to find new ways of evaluating the potential profit of player transfers to lower the risk of failed player investments. The aim of this article is to quantify the popularity of a football player in terms of his merchandising potential to amortize his transfer price. The mathematically formulated relationship calculates a reference value for a player, taking performance, age, number of customers purchasing merchandise, and player position into account. The information gained can be used by managers of European football clubs as a guide in transfer negotiations. For 6907 players of the European top leagues, we analyzed data in the period from 2003 to 2019. For 409 players in the season of 2018/2019 complete data sets were available, so that a model for calculating a theoretical transfer fee for a player during that season could be determined. The results of the study and the developed model suggest that, based on the available data, a football club should offer either one-year or three-year contracts to a transferred player, depending on the anticipated profit margin of merchandise sales and the quota of potential buyers of the products representing a percentage of the number of customers purchasing merchandise. This information gives football club’s management the chance to make better transfer decisions for the individual situation of the player and the club itself. Due to the increased importance of transfers on a football club’s financial performance, better transfer decision making leads to an improved financial stability of the respective clubs and eventually to sporting success. Urban villages are a modern heritage in China that provide affordable housing for urban immigrants and accommodate diverse communities of cohabitation. The regeneration and displacement of urban villages in the past decade have raised the potential risk of social exclusion and led to debates regarding the preservation of cultural and social authenticity. This paper establishes a new conceptual framework for the definition of authenticity from multi-subject perspectives. Taking Nantou as a massive regeneration case, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with multiple stakeholders, involving planning officials, developers, designers, researchers, merchandisers, curation NGOs, local residents, and tourists. Key factors and concepts related to the multi-subject evaluation of the planning decision and its effect on urban regeneration have been identified, using a grounded theory approach for interview analysis. A further coding of the data reveals four cognitive dimensions in the subjects’ expression of authenticity. The shift in the definition of urban authenticity implies that stakeholders might use different notions of authenticity in negotiations to resist or embrace urban interventions. The multivariant definition framework of authenticity can be adapted to guide future regeneration strategies, and would motivate the proliferation of urban preservation to take social and negotiable character into its definition. Environmental pollution is one of the major concerns throughout the world. The rise of industrialization has increased the generation of waste materials, causing environmental degradation and threat to the health of living beings. To overcome this problem and effectively handle waste materials, proper management skills are required. Waste as a whole is not only waste, but it also holds various valuable materials that can be used again. Such useful materials or elements need to be segregated and recovered using sustainable recovery methods. Agricultural waste, industrial waste, and household waste have the potential to generate different value-added products. More specifically, the industrial waste like fly ash, gypsum waste, and red mud can be used for the recovery of alumina, silica, and zeolites. While agricultural waste like rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and coconut shells can be used for recovery of silica, calcium, and carbon materials. In addition, domestic waste like incense stick ash and eggshell waste that is rich in calcium can be used for the recovery of calcium-related products. In agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors, several raw materials are used; therefore, it is of high economic interest to recover valuable minerals and to process them and convert them into merchandisable products. This will not only decrease environmental pollution, it will also provide an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for materials synthesis. These value-added materials can be used for medicine, cosmetics, electronics, catalysis, and environmental cleanup. Full article

In this article, we compare two different kinds of commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in transmission and organic photodetectors based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and a phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend used as active layer in reception. Photovoltaic cells based on massive heterojunctions of semiconductor polymers have focused the attention of researchers due to their several potential advantages over their inorganic counterparts, such as their simplicity, low cost, and ability to process large area devices, even on flexible substrates. Furthermore, in logistics, storage management systems require the implementation of technological solutions that allow the control of merchandise in real time by means of light-emitting diode signals that send information about the product. However, the slow response time of these organic photodetectors should not be critical for this application, where the light intensity changes are very slow, which limits the speed of data transmission compared to inorganic based systems that use wireless optical communications. Finally, we show a low-cost visible light communication system based on organic photodetectors with a frame based on on-off keying with Manchester encoding to support device-to-device connections. Modern supply chains have evolved into highly complex value networks and turned into a vital source of competitive advantage. However, it has become increasingly challenging to verify the source of raw materials and maintain visibility of products and merchandise while they are moving through the value chain network. The application of the Internet of Things (IoT) can help companies to observe, track, and monitor products, activities, and processes within their respective value chain networks. Other applications of IoT include product monitoring to optimize operations in warehousing‚ manufacturing, and transportation. In combination with IoT, Blockchain technology can enable a broad range of different application scenarios to enhance value chain transparency and to increase B2B trust. When combined, IoT and Blockchain technology have the potential to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of modern supply chains. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we illustrate how the deployment of Blockchain technology in combination with IoT infrastructure can streamline and benefit modern supply chains and enhance value chain networks. Second, we derive six research propositions outlining how Blockchain technology can impact key features of the IoT (i.e., scalability, security, immutability and auditing, information flows, traceability and interoperability, quality) and thus lay the foundation for future research projects. The design of cultural and environmental goods can aim at valorising both material and immaterial cultural heritage at different scales. Specifically, the merchandising product, which is often the victim of production stereotypes, can instead collaborate with a disruptive force in the construction of the non-ephemeral “sense” of a visit. It is, in fact, able to spread complex contents in scientifically correct and comprehensible ways for different targets, condensing the immaterial patrimony into (small) new, low-cost and rich-in-meaning artefacts. This case study, proposed as evidence of such an approach, pertains to a research and teaching activity that was developed in 2017 with 230 university students of design, with the aim of setting up a collection of dedicated merchandising products for a regional talc mine Ecomuseum. The challenge involved narrating the material culture of the location through products that were philologically coherent with the context, but new from the language, functionality, productivity, user involvement and economic accessibility points of view. The resulting projects are, at present, being screened by the Ecomuseum in order to select the most significant for future production. In conclusion, the activity was shown to be potentially scalable and repeatable in other contexts, in which design can valorise an intangible heritage of immense value through products that, inserted into a more extensive strategy of valorisation of the cultural heritage, are within the reach of all.
