The incompatibility between inorganic flame retardants and organic acrylic coatings represents a significant challenge that requires resolution. This work selected environmentally friendly organic aqueous acrylic coatings as the substrate, sodium silicate hydrate as the inorganic flame retardant, and melamine cyanurate (MCA) as the flame-retardant modifier and the flame-retardant co-modifier, with the objective of improving the dispersion and flame-retardant properties of sodium silicate hydrate in the aqueous acrylic coatings. Subsequently, the sodium silicate/MCA/waterborne acrylic acid flame-retardant coating was prepared. The flame-retardant treatment was then applied to poplar veneer in order to create a flame-retardant poplar veneer. The dispersion of the flame-retardant coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Furthermore, the flame-retardant properties of the flame-retardant poplar veneer were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimeter. The results demonstrated that the MCA-modified sodium silicate flame retardant was well dispersed in aqueous acrylic coatings. The results of the flame-retardant properties of the poplar veneer indicated that the ignition time of the 9% flame retardant-treated poplar veneer was increased by 122.7%, the limiting oxygen index value was increased by 43.0%, and the peak heat release rate (pHRR), the peak total heat release rate (pTHR), and the peak mass loss rate were decreased by 19.9%, 10.8%, and 27.2%, respectively, in comparison to the non-flame retardant-treated poplar veneer. Furthermore, the residual char mass increased by 14.4%, and the residual char exhibited enhanced thickness, density, and regularity. The results demonstrated that MCA was an effective promoter of sodium silicate dispersion in acrylic coatings. Furthermore, the sodium silicate/MCA/waterborne acrylic flame-retardant coating significantly enhance the flame retardancy of wood, and its flame retardant mechanism was consistent with the synergistic silicone–nitrogen expansion flame-retardant mechanism. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing the dispersion of inorganic flame retardants in organic coatings, offering a valuable contribution to the advancement of research and application in the domains of innovative flame retardant coatings and flame retardant wood. In this work, the use of graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with improved texture characteristics for the synthesis of supported palladium catalysts of dehydrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles was studied. This process is key to the creation of liquid organic carrier technology (LOHC) using N-heterocycles as reversibly hydrogenated/dehydrogenated substrates. For the preparation of graphite-like carbon nitride supports with advanced textural characteristics, well-established technology of the melamine cyanurate complex carbonization and standard techniques of adsorption precipitation together with wet impregnation were used for the synthesis of Pd-containing systems. The activity of the synthesized catalysts was studied in decahydroquinoline dehydrogenation. The high weight content of extractable hydrogen (7.2 wt%) and the high extraction rate, respectively, make it possible to consider these substances as the most promising N-heterocyclic compounds for this technology. It was shown that an increase in the specific surface area of g-C3N4 allows for achieving a slightly lower but comparable fineness of palladium particles for the 1 wt% Pd/MCA-500 sample, compared to the standard 1 wt% Pd/C. In this case, the catalytic activity of 1 wt% Pd/MCA-500 in the dehydrogenation of both substrates exceeded the analogous parameter for catalysts supported by nitrogen-free supports. This regularity is presumably associated with the electron-donor effect of surface nitrogen, which favorably affects the dehydrogenation rate as well as the stability of catalytic systems. To construct a highly active g-C3N4 (CN)/silica hybrid nanosystem, the supramolecular precursor strategy of introducing melamine–cyanuric acid (MCA) by synergistically using micromolecular melamine (m) and urea (u) for CN nanostructure construction on the silica nanosheets (SiNSs) surface was researched. The results showed that the introduction of MCA supramolecular aggregates promoted the generation of ordered CN nanostructures attached to SiNSs, and the morphology of the CN nanostructure could be regulated through the m/u mass ratio. When the ratio is equal to 1/30, a typical g-C3N4/silica hybrid nanosheet (mu-CN/SiNSs-3) was successfully prepared, which showed the ultra-high photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B dye degradation within 25 min with an apparent rate constant of 0.186 min−1, owing to the large surface area of highly dispersed and ordered CN nanosheets, a strong interaction between CN and SiNSs, high photogenerated carriers separation efficiency, and the more negative conduction band potential offering more active species of 1O2 and O2. Unexpectedly, the mu-CN/SiNSs-2 composite (m/u = 1/10) exhibited the highest activity for tetracycline antibiotic degradation, mainly due to the morphological advantage of a certain number of nanotubes generated on the CN/SiNSs hybrid nanosheets. It indicates that the supramolecular precursor strategy by synergistically using melamine and urea is highly efficient for the nanostructure construction of the CN/SiNSs hybrid system, enabling an appropriate nanostructure for the photodegradation of various pollutants. The catalytic capability of original carbon nitride (CN) is limited by a small specific surface area and high electron–hole recombination rate. In this study, WO3-loaded porous carbon nanosheets (MCA-CN/WO3) were synthesized by thermal treatment with melamine, cyanuric acid and WCl6. The MCA-CN/WO3 could degrade 98% of the methylene blue (MB) within 30 min in the photo-Fenton-like process, displaying better catalytic activity than the original CN (30%), pure MCA-CN (63%) and original CN/WO3 (87%). The results of photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the Z-scheme heterojunction of MCA-CN/WO3 inhibited the recombination of electrons and holes. In addition, the porous nanosheet structure accelerated the electron transfer and provided abundant active sites for MB degradation. A radical quenching experiment indicated that the Z-scheme heterojunction facilitated the decomposition of H2O2 to produce 1O2 for MB degradation. The possible degradation pathways of MB were proposed. Full article

The electro-Fenton (EF) process is regarded as an efficient and promising sewage disposal technique for sustainable water environment protection. However, current developments in EF are largely restricted by cathode electrocatalysts. Herein, a supramolecular self-assembly strategy is adopted for synthetization, based on melamine–cyanuric acid (MCA) supramolecular aggregates integrated with carbon fixation using 5-aminosalicylic acid and zinc acetylacetonate hydrate. The prepared carbon materials characterize an ordered lamellar microstructure, high specific surface area (595 m2 g−1), broad mesoporous distribution (4~33 nm) and high N doping (19.62%). Such features result from the intrinsic superiority of hydrogen-bonded MCA supramolecular aggregates via the specific molecular assembly process. Accordingly, noteworthy activity and selectivity of H2O2 production (~190.0 mg L−1 with 2 h) are achieved. Excellent mineralization is declared for optimized carbon material in several organic pollutants, namely, basic fuchsin, chloramphenicol, phenol and several mixed triphenylmethane-type dyestuffs, with total organic carbon removal of 87.5%, 74.8%, 55.7% and 54.2% within 8 h, respectively. This work offers a valuable insight into facilitating the application of supramolecular-derived carbon materials for extensive EF degradation. Full article

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, hereafter abbreviated as CN) was prepared by the heating of melamine (CN-M) and melamine-cyanurate complex (CN-MCA), respectively, in air at 550 °C for 4 h. The specific surface area (SSA) of CN-M and CN-MCA was 12 m2 g−1 and 225 m2g−1 and the content of oxygen was 0.62 wt.% and 1.88 wt.%, respectively. The band gap energy (Eg) of CN-M was 2.64 eV and Eg of CN-MCA was 2.73 eV. The photocatalytic activity of the CN materials was tested by means of the decomposition of antibiotics ofloxacin and ampicillin under LED irradiation of 420 nm. The activity of CN-MCA was higher due to its high SSA, which was determined based on the physisorption of nitrogen. Ofloxacin was decomposed more efficiently than ampicillin in the presence of both photocatalysts. Full article

The lithium-polysulfide (LiPS) dissolution from the cathode to the organic electrolyte is the main challenge for high-energy-density lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, we present a multi-functional porous carbon, melamine cyanurate (MCA)-glucose-derived carbon (MGC), with superior porosity, electrical conductivity, and polysulfide affinity as an efficient sulfur support to mitigate the shuttle effect. MGC is prepared via a reactive templating approach, wherein the organic MCA crystals are utilized as the pore-/micro-structure-directing agent and nitrogen source. The homogeneous coating of spherical MCA crystal particles with glucose followed by carbonization at 600 °C leads to the formation of hierarchical porous hollow carbon spheres with abundant pyridinic N-functional groups without losing their microstructural ordering. Moreover, MGC enables facile penetration and intensive anchoring of LiPS, especially under high loading sulfur conditions. Consequently, the MGC cathode exhibited a high areal capacity of 5.79 mAh cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2 and high loading sulfur of 6.0 mg cm−2 with a minor capacity decay rate of 0.18% per cycle for 100 cycles. The nano-silica sol was prepared by sol-gel method, and the boric acid, urea, cyanoguanidine, melamine cyanurate (MCA), 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), and 6H-dibenz (C,E) (1,2) oxaphosphorin-6-oxide (DOPO) were added to the silica sol to modify the flame retardant through physical doping and chemical bonding. According to the formula proposed by Lewin, the calculation of flammability parameters were obtained by the limiting oxygen index meter, the micro calorimeter, the vertical burner, and the thermogravimetric analyzer proved that there was a synergistic or additive effect between the B/N/P flame retardant and the silica sol. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to characterize the morphology, structure, and pyrolysis products of treated silk fabric and residues after combustion. The results show that the flame retardancy of silica-boron sol is mainly caused by endothermic reaction and melt covering reaction. Silicon-nitrogen sol acts as a flame retardant through endothermic reaction, release of gases, and melting coverage. Silicon-phosphorus sol achieves flame retardancy by forming an acid to promote formation of a carbon layer and melting coverage. Silica sol and other flame retardants show excellent flame retardanty after compounding, and have certain complementarity, which can balance the dosage, performance, and cost of flame retardants, and is more suitable for industrial development.
