The Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra Dazhidu lun 大智度論 is often regarded as the “king of commentaries”; a total of 574 manuscript scrolls have been identified among the Dunhuang manuscripts, many of which constitute dispersed fragments that can be reassembled. In addition to comparing physical features such as format, handwriting style, and paper dimensions, the presence of shared textual variants serves as a key criterion for assessing their potential for reconstruction. Advances in the work of rejoining fragments provide a crucial foundation for further research. However, since the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra is a commentary on the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśūstra and follows a format that first cites the sutra text and then provides an explanation, there is an overlap in content between the two types of texts. As a result, even after rejoining, 355 scrolls still cannot be definitively attributed to a specific source. Under such circumstances, shared textual variants become the key basis for reattributing these dubiously titled scrolls. Through an examination of three cases of rejoined scrolls exhibiting identical variants, along with three instances of scroll renaming, in this study, we demonstrate the crucial role of textual variant collation in the foundational research of Dunhuang manuscripts. This manuscript introduces a river segmentation method and explores the impact of human interventions through a long-term study of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand. An indicator linking parameter concentrations to the river’s flow rate was used to assess the development of the examined parameters. The analysis spanned from 2011 to 2022, considering both seasonal and yearly variations. Normal probability plots served as statistical tools to evaluate whether the data followed normal distributions and identify outliers. The proposed segmentation divided the Bahlui River into four segments, each defined by anthropogenic stressors. It was found that, due to human activity, each river segment could be viewed as an “independent” river. This supports the idea that river segments can be analyzed separately as distinct components. The proposed segmentation approach represents an alternative approach in river water quality research, moving from traditional continuous system models to fragmented system analysis, which better reflects the reality of heavily modified river systems. The study’s findings are important for understanding how anthropogenic modifications affect river ecosystem functioning in the long term. Full article

Since 2005, landscape ecology has emerged as a structured scientific field in the Democratic Republic of Congo, notably shaped by the contributions of Professor Jan Bogaert. The evolution of research in this field can be divided into three main phases. The first phase (2005–2012) focused on the quantitative analysis of forest fragmentation using Geographic Information Systems and landscape metrics. From 2013 to 2019, research approaches broadened to include the social sciences, marking a shift toward a socio-ecological perspective on landscapes. Since 2020, the field has increasingly adopted holistic frameworks that integrate climatic factors and forward-looking modeling. Key research themes now include ecological flows across landscape mosaics, land-use dynamics, and the anthropogenic transformation of ecosystems. However, several challenges persist, including the lack of long-term temporal datasets, uneven geographic coverage, and limited integration of local knowledge systems. Notable advances have been made through high-resolution remote sensing and participatory methods, although their application is still limited by technical and financial constraints. This manuscript advocates for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration, improved field methodologies, and the development of context-appropriate tools to support sustainable and locally grounded landscape management in the Congolese context. This study provides a comprehensive philological analysis of ten Old Uyghur manuscript fragments of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra (Lotus Sutra) in the Berlin Turfan Collection, while systematically examining all extant Old Uyghur Lotus Sutra manuscripts to establish a complete corpus for comparative analysis. By collating this complete corpus with Kumārajīva’s Chinese translation, this research demonstrates a typology of Old Uyghur Lotus Sutra fragments. It identifies at least two distinct translation lineages: (1) early translations (pre-10th century) exhibiting lexical and structural divergences indicative of Sogdian mediation or hybrid source traditions, and (2) late translations (11th–14th centuries) directly derived from the Chinese version, characterized by syntactic fidelity and a standardized terminology. Through comparative textual analysis, orthographic scrutiny, and terminological cross-referencing, this paper aims to reconstruct the historical trajectory of the Lotus Sutra’s transmission. In addition, it discusses some facts indicating linguistic and cultural contact between the Sogdians and the progressive alignment of Uyghur Buddhist texts with Chinese Buddhist traditions. Background: The objective was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of direct fragment impaction, indirect reduction through ligamentotaxis, and the combination of both techniques in burst fractures of the thoracolumbar (TL) spine. Methods: The fractures were categorized using the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) classification and assessed via standard computed tomography (CT) scans for spinal canal area (SCA) and mid-sagittal diameter (MSD). The Frankel classification was used to assess neurological deficits. Only single vertebrae AO types A3 and A4 thoracic or lumbar fractures were included. All patients received bisegmental posterior stabilization, one of the reduction techniques, and, if neurological deficits were present, a spinal decompression. Mean preoperative (µSCApre/µMSDpre), postoperative (µSCApost/µMSDpost) and difference (∆SCA/∆MSD) in radiographic values were obtained and analyzed using the Mumford formula. The significance of the reduction from preoperative stenosis was assessed using a t-test, while the effectiveness of the reduction techniques was compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn’s post hoc test. The manuscript was focused primarily on radiographic outcomes; therefore, aside from the neurostatus, no other clinical parameters were statistically analyzed. Results: Thirteen patients (38.2%) received stand-alone indirect reduction, 13 patients (38.2%) underwent direct reduction, and a combined reduction was used in eight patients (23.6%). All methods resulted in a statistically significant reduction in spinal canal stenosis (p < 0.05), with a minimal mean ∆SCA of 19%. Patients in the direct reduction group had significantly higher µSCApre values compared to those in the indirect reduction group (p = 0.02). Conclusions: All of the tested reduction techniques provided a significant reduction in spinal canal stenosis. Patients who underwent mere direct reduction had significantly higher preoperative spinal canal stenosis compared to the indirect reduction group. Full article

This paper examines the Nanatsu-dera manuscript of the Dafangguang Rulai Xingqi Weimizang Jing (RXWJ) through the lens of scribal practices, with a focus on variant characters (yitizi, 異體字) and textual transmission. As a “separately produced scripture” (bie sheng jing, 別生經), the RXWJ was not included in the woodblock-printed editions of the Chinese Buddhist canon, which limited its circulation and made manuscript copies—such as the Nanatsu-dera manuscript—critical for reconstructing its textual evolution, transmission, and scribal modifications. A detailed paleographic investigation reveals scribal variants, orthographic fluidity, and phonetic substitutions, illustrating both intentional adaptations and unintentional errors in textual transmission. Comparative analysis with Dunhuang fragments and the Taishō Canon further contextualizes these variations, shedding light on the interpretive challenges scribes and readers face. The findings suggest that the Nanatsu-dera manuscript underwent three stages of transmission: (1) it originated from the Fifty-Fascicle edition circulating in China, (2) it was used as a base text (diben, 底本) for manuscript copying in Japan, and (3) it was subsequently re-copied and preliminarily collated by Japanese scribes. By tracing scribal variants and textual transmission through a paleographic approach, this research underscores the critical role of manuscript culture in preserving texts outside the canonical tradition, offering new insights into the mechanisms of Buddhist textual transmission and adaptation in medieval East Asia. The Āgamas hold significant importance in the context of Old Uyghur Buddhism, as evidenced by the discovery of over 100 fragments of Old Uyghur translations from Turfan and Dunhuang. Of particular significance are the two fragments housed in the Berlin Turfan Collection, U 5464 and U 5501, which contain an Old Uyghur translation of the Chinese Saṃyuktāgama, inscribed on both sides of a repurposed Manichaean manuscript. These fragments correspond to the 22nd and 23rd fascicles of the Chinese source text. This study provides a comprehensive introduction and an edition of these two fragments, accompanied by a comparative analysis with a parallel Old Uyghur translation from Manuscript N, housed in Tokyo. The analysis reveals significant variations, particularly in translation strategies, suggesting the existence of multiple Old Uyghur versions of the text. Full article

With the ongoing urbanization and densification of cities worldwide, the planning and utilization of urban underground space (UUS) have become crucial for developing urban underground infrastructure. Given the limited construction space within dense urban areas and the influence of declining groundwater levels, technologies such as open caissons and various vertical shaft methods have been introduced for UUS development. However, the dissemination of these technologies remains fragmented across different domains, lacking systematic summarization. A comprehensive, up-to-date overview of open caisson and vertical shaft technologies is essential for their effective application. In the manuscript, a systematic analysis of vertical shaft technologies, specifically focusing on their use in soft ground conditions, is conducted. The analysis is based on an extensive literature review and case study evaluation. It addresses the unique challenges posed by high compressibility, low bearing capacity, and groundwater sensitivity. Conventional shaft technologies and mechanized systems, including open caissons, drilled shafts, and the novel pressed-in ultra-deep assembled shafts (PIAUS), are evaluated systematically. Key aspects such as design principles, construction techniques, and stability in soft soils are discussed. The limitations of conventional methods in soft UUS are highlighted, while the advantages of advanced mechanized systems—such as rapid construction, reduced environmental impact, and improved safety—are emphasized. A detailed comparison of case studies demonstrates that PIAUS construction technology is particularly efficient in urban areas with confined spaces, dense building conditions, and ground conditions up to 200 MPa, with shaft diameters up to 12.8 m and depths of 115.2 m. Additionally, its suitability for rapid construction in soft and medium ground conditions is supported by undrained excavation with parallel excavation and liner sinking techniques. The PIAUS technology shows considerable potential for future projects, including shield construction shafts, ventilation shafts for tunnels, underground parking garages, and stormwater storage wells. This manuscript also highlights emerging mechanized methods in underground space development, their advantages, limitations, and areas for future research and improvement. Full article

The application of light-emitting diode (LED)-dependent photobiomodulation (PBM) in promoting post-tendon injury healing has been recently reported. Despite establishing a theoretical basis for ligament restoration through PBM, identifying effective LED wavelength combinations and ensuring safety in animal models remain unresolved challenges. In our previous study, we demonstrated that combined irradiation at 630 nm and 880 nm promotes cell proliferation and migration, which are critical processes during the early stage of tendon healing in human-derived tendon fibroblasts. Based on this, we hypothesized that 630/880 nm LED-based PBM might promote rapid healing during the initial phase of tendon healing, and we aimed to analyze the results after PBM treatment in a murine model. Migration kinetics were analyzed at two specific wavelengths: 630 and 880 nm. The Achilles tendon in the hind limbs of Balb/c mice was severed by Achilles tendon transection. Subsequently, the mice were randomized into LED non-irradiation and LED irradiation groups. Mice with intact tendons were employed as healthy controls. The total number of mice was 13 for the healthy and injured groups and 14 for the LED-irradiated injured group, and the data presented in this manuscript were obtained from one representative experiment (n = 4–5 per group). The wounds were LED-irradiated for 20 min daily for two days. Histological properties, tendon healing mediators, and inflammatory mediators were screened on day 14. The roundness of the nuclei and fiber structure, indicating the degree of infiltrated inflammatory cells and severity of fiber fragmentation, respectively, were lower in the LED irradiation group than in the LED non-irradiation group. Immunohistochemical analysis depicted an increase in tenocytes (SCX+ cells) and recovery of wounds with reduced fibrosis (lower collagen 3 and TGF-β1) in the LED irradiation group during healing; conversely, the LED non-irradiation group exhibited tissue fibrosis. Overall, the ratio of M2 macrophages to total macrophages in the LED irradiation group was higher than that in the injured group. LED-based PBM in the Achilles tendon rupture murine model facilitated a rapid restoration of histological and immunochemical outcomes. These findings suggest that LED-based PBM presents remarkable potential as an adjunct therapeutic approach for tendon healing and warrants further research to standardize various parameters to advance and establish it as a reliable treatment regimen. Object detection in images is a fundamental component of many safety-critical systems, such as autonomous driving, video surveillance systems, and robotics. Adversarial patch attacks, being easily implemented in the real world, provide effective counteraction to object detection by state-of-the-art neural-based detectors. It poses a serious danger in various fields of activity. Existing defense methods against patch attacks are insufficiently effective, which underlines the need to develop new reliable solutions. In this manuscript, we propose a method which helps to increase the robustness of neural network systems to the input adversarial images. The proposed method consists of a Deep Convolutional Neural Network to reconstruct a benign image from the adversarial one; a Calculating Maximum Error block to highlight the mismatches between input and reconstructed images; a Localizing Anomalous Fragments block to extract the anomalous regions using the Isolation Forest algorithm from histograms of images’ fragments; and a Clustering and Processing block to group and evaluate the extracted anomalous regions. The proposed method, based on anomaly localization, demonstrates high resistance to adversarial patch attacks while maintaining the high quality of object detection. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in defending against adversarial patch attacks. Using the YOLOv3 algorithm with the proposed defensive method for pedestrian detection in the INRIAPerson dataset under the adversarial attacks, the mAP50 metric reaches 80.97% compared to 46.79% without a defensive method. The results of the research demonstrate that the proposed method is promising for improvement of object detection systems security. Full article

The escalating demand for sustainable materials has been fueling the rapid proliferation of the biopolymer market. Biodegradable polymers within natural habitats predominantly undergo degradation mediated by microorganisms. These microorganisms secrete enzymes that cleave long-chain polymers into smaller fragments for metabolic assimilation. This review is centered around dissecting the degradation mechanisms of specific biodegradable polymers, namely PLA, starch-based polymers, and plant fiber-based polymers. Recent investigations have unveiled that PLA exhibits augmented biocompatibility when combined with HA, and its degradation is subject to the influence of enzymatic and abiotic determinants. In the case of starch-based polymers, chemical or physical modifications can modulate their degradation kinetics, as evidenced by Wang et al.’s superhydrophobic starch-based nanocomposite cryogel. For plant fiber-based polymers, the effects of temperature, humidity, and cellulose degradation on their properties, along with the implications of various treatments and additives, are probed, as exemplified by Liu et al.’s study on jute/SiO2/PP composites. Specifically, with respect to PLA, the polymerization process and the role of catalysts such as SnCl2 in governing the structure and biodegradability are expounded in detail. The degradation of PLA in SBF and its interaction with β-TCP particles constitute crucial aspects. For starch-based polymers, the enzymatic degradation catalyzed by amylase and glucosidase and the environmental impacts of temperature and humidity, in addition to the structural ramifications of amylose and amylopectin, are further elucidated. In plant fiber-based polymers, the biodegradation of cellulose and the effects of plasma treatment, electron beam irradiation, nanoparticles, and crosslinking agents on water resistance and stability are explicated with experimental substantiation. This manuscript also delineates technological accomplishments. PLA incorporated with HA demonstrates enhanced biocompatibility and finds utility in drug delivery systems. Starch-based polymers can be engineered for tailored degradation. Plant fiber-based polymers acquire water resistance and durability through specific treatments or the addition of nanoparticles, thereby widening their application spectrum. Synthetic and surface modification methodologies can be harnessed to optimize these materials. This paper also consolidates reaction conditions, research techniques, their merits, and demerits and delves into the biodegradation reaction mechanisms of these polymers. A comprehensive understanding of these degradation mechanisms is conducive to their application and progression in the context of sustainable development and environmental conservation. Full article

Because the verso side, which contains essential information, remains unpublished—despite the publication of the recto—the manuscript’s typology cannot be fully comprehended, and it has consequently not garnered substantial scholarly attention. Through site investigation, transcription, English translation, detailed annotation, and comparative analysis with parallel Tibetan texts, B121:38 is confirmed to be a balividhi fragment of Tantric Buddhist literature. This fragment comprises three parts: praise for the five ḍākas, a transference of merits, and a mantra. The findings provide compelling evidence of the prominence of Tibetan Tantrism among Old Uighurs. Full article

The connection between a prefabricated reinforced concrete column and a pocket foundation is a case treated from a general perspective in the European Standard named EN 1992-1-1 (EC2), and when the structural engineer deals with the dimensioning or verification of the connection, he must tackle several unknowns. The present work aims to fill in the missing information by presenting detailed calculation models based on the strut-and-tie method for four widely used pocket foundations: a pedestal pocket foundation with smooth, rough or keyed internal walls and a pad foundation with a pocket possessing keyed internal walls. In establishing the strut-and-tie models and writing the equation for the internal forces, we consider several standards (EC2, NBR 9062 and DIN 1045-1), good practices (from Austria, England, Germany and Romania) and numerous experimental and numerical investigations. Additionally, detailed design prescriptions applicable to seismic areas are given. This manuscript covers a wide range of design and technology aspects necessary for designing and building columns connected with pocket foundations, information for which is shown only in fragmented form or partially in other publications. Afterward, as a case study, a pocket foundation is designed in all four variations, with the structural design particularities, similitudes and differences being pointed out. Finally, to conclude, we mention the advantages and disadvantages of pocket foundations with respect to the type of internal wall surface used. Quantifiable data based on the case study undertaken are available. Full article

The transformation of healthcare from a fee-for-service model to value-based care is particularly crucial in managing complex and rare diseases like sarcoma, where data fragmentation and variability present significant challenges. This manuscript reviews strategies for structured and harmonized data integration—a critical precursor to precision medicine in sarcoma care. We demonstrate how standardizing data formats, ontologies, and coding systems enable seamless integration of clinical, economic, and patient-reported outcomes across institutions, paving the way for comprehensive predictive analytics. By establishing robust value-based healthcare (VBHC) frameworks through digital transformation and predictive models, including digital twins, we create the foundation for personalized sarcoma treatment and real-world-time clinical decision-making. The manuscript also addresses practical challenges, including the need for system standardization, overcoming regulatory and privacy concerns, and managing high costs. We propose actionable strategies to overcome these barriers and discuss the role of advanced analytics and future research directions that further enhance VBHC and precision medicine. This work outlines the necessary steps to build a cohesive, data-driven approach that supports the transition to precision medicine, fundamentally improving outcomes for sarcoma patients. Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment. Nevertheless, given the heterogeneity of clinical efficacy, the multiplicity of treatment options available and the possibility of serious adverse effects, selecting the most effective treatment has become the greatest challenge. Molecular imaging offers an attractive way for this purpose. ImmunoPET provides specific imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) using monoclonal antibodies (mAb) or its fragments as vector. By combining the high targeting specificity of mAb and the sensitivity of PET technique, immunoPET could noninvasively and dynamically reveal tumor antigens expression and provide theranostic tools of several types of malignancies. Because of their slow kinetics, mAbs require radioelements defined by a consistent half-life. Zirconium 89 (89Zr) and Copper 64 (64Cu) are radiometals with half-lives suitable for mAb labeling. Radiolabeling with a radiometal requires the prior use of a bifunctional chelate agent (BFCA) to functionalize mAb for radiometal chelation, in a second step. There are a number of BFCA available and much research is focused on antibody functionalization techniques or on developing the optimum chelating agent depending the selected radiometal. In this manuscript, we present a critical account of radiochemical techniques with radionuclides 89Zr and 64Cu and their applications in preclinical and clinical immuno-PET imaging. Full article
