Currently, approximately 6000 mineral species have been identified, and every year, approximately 100 more are discovered. The discovery of a new mineral has a close relationship with geological heritage. It involves the definition of both the type mineral (the specimen from which the sample used for the description of the new mineral species was obtained) and the type locality (the location where the corresponding specimen was found). All type minerals constitute elements of movable geological heritage and must be kept in a museum or a reference research center. However, not all type localities are recognized as geological heritage sites (geosites), despite their connection to a heritage interest. This article discusses these different considerations regarding type minerals and type localities as geological heritage in a general context. In addition, the situation in the case of Spain is analyzed, which, for various reasons, can serve as a model at the international level. It is concluded that type localities should be considered part of the geological heritage, and that the number of type minerals is always greater than that of type localities. Full article

Museums may acquire archaeological artefacts discovered by non-specialists or amateur archaeologists, holding the potential to promote the safeguarding of cultural heritage by integrating the local community in their activities. However, this also creates an opportunity for the fraudulent sale of modern forgeries presented as archaeological artefacts, resulting in the need for a critical assessment of the artefact’s authenticity prior to acquisition by the museum. In 2019, the regional museum in Cáceres (Spain) was offered the opportunity to acquire a Phoenician-Punic head pendant, allegedly discovered in the vicinity of the city. The artefact’s authenticity was assessed by traditional approaches, including typological analysis and analysis of manufacture technique, which raised doubts about its purported age. VP-SEM-EDS analysis of the chemical composition of the different glass portions comprising the pendant was used for non-invasive determination of glassmaking recipes, enabling the identification of glass components incompatible with known Iron Age glassmaking recipes from the Mediterranean. Further comparison with historical and modern glassmaking recipes allowed for the identification of the artefact as a recent forgery made from glasses employing modern colouring and opacifying techniques. This article examines the seismic assessment and strengthening of a traditional load-bearing masonry structure subjected to strong motion data, with particular emphasis on the effects of soil–structure interaction (SSI). The case study is the Archaeological Museum of Lemnos (AML)—a three-storey building with a composite load-bearing system of timber-framed stone masonry. Over time, the structure has undergone irreversible modifications, primarily involving reinforced concrete (RC) interventions. The building’s seismic performance was evaluated using two finite element models developed in the SAP2000 software (v. 25.3.00). The first model simulates the original structure, strengthened by grout injections, while the second represents the current condition of the structural system following RC additions. Soil–structure interaction was also investigated, given that the local soil is classified as Category D according to Eurocode 8 (EC8). Each model was analyzed under two different support conditions: fixed-base and SSI-inclusive. A suite of appropriate accelerograms was applied to both models, in compliance with Eurocode 8 using the SeismoMatch software, and linear time-history analyses were conducted. The results underscore the significant impact of SSI on the increase of peak tensile stress and interstorey drift ratios (IDRs), and highlight the influence of different strengthening techniques on the seismic response of historic load-bearing masonry structures. Solanum aculeatissimum is a herbaceous to semi-woody perennial plant native to the Brazilian ecosystem. It has naturalized extensively in southwestern China, posing significant threats to local biodiversity. This study systematically screened and integrated 100 distribution records from authoritative databases, including the Chinese Virtual Plant Specimen Database, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, and Chinese Natural Museums. Additionally, 23 environmental variables were incorporated, comprising 19 bioclimatic factors from the World Climate Dataset, 3 topographic indicators, and the Human Footprint Index. The objectives of this research are as follows: (1) to simulate the plant’s current and future distribution (2050s/2070s) under CMIP6 scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5); (2) to quantify changes in the distribution range; and (3) to determine the migration trajectory using MaxEnt 3.4.4 software. The findings reveal that human pressure (contributing 79.7%) and isothermality (bioclimatic factor 3: 10.1%) are the primary driving forces shaping its distribution. The core suitable habitats are predominantly concentrated in the provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. By 2070, the distribution center shifts northeastward to Qujing City. Under the SSP5-8.5 scenario, the invasion front extends into southern Tibet, while retreat occurs in the lowlands of Honghe Prefecture. This study underscores the synergistic effects of socioeconomic development pathways and bioclimatic thresholds on invasive species’ biogeographical patterns, providing a robust predictive framework for adaptive management strategies. This study reviewed the benefits of outdoor activities and educational programs that take place in nature in terms of the cognitive and mental development of children. Research has highlighted the benefits offered to children by their participation in experiential activities that take place outdoors and are related to natural phenomena. These activities help children realize how important it is to conserve nature and protect sites of world heritage, thus becoming active citizens in the future. In this study, the uniqueness of Syros Island is presented, emphasizing the need for the world-renowned geological heritage of Syros to be preserved and promoted, both for the scientific community and for the public, with the aim of establishing a geopark in Apano Meria, as proposed by local authorities, along with a local museum. In this context, a working methodology was developed involving the design and implementation of a pilot educational program combining field-based activities, guided interpretation, and interactive learning tools. An indicative educational program was piloted with primary and secondary school students, as well as postgraduate students from the University of Athens. Recognizing the important role of geoparks in school education, the program focused on the rare geological phenomena on the northern side of Syros and was adapted to the characteristics of each participant age group. This study examines the architectural ceramic corpus—comprising azulejos (tiles) and alicatados (tiling mosaics)—preserved in the Alhambra Museum, with the aim of elucidating its historical, artistic, and technical significance. Through a systematic methodology combining visual analysis, documentary research, and typological classification, a representative selection of ceramic artefacts was assessed. This article explores the artistic characteristics and technological principles of pieces produced using painted, relief, metallic lustre, incrustación, alicatado, cuerda seca, and arista techniques and reconstructs the historical trajectory of these decorative practices, tracing their origins in the pre-Islamic world to their adaptation within the Alhambra Palatine City. This diachronic perspective contextualises the innovations observed in the citadel, where production strategies reflect both inherited traditions and local adaptations across different historical phases. The findings highlight the richness and diversity of the Nasrid (mediaeval era) and Christian (modern era) ceramic legacy in the Alhambra and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of manufacturing processes and conservation challenges associated with these architectural elements. This preliminary characterisation establishes a basis for future material analysis and supports broader initiatives in documentation and heritage management. Full article

Tridacna maxima ‘Rediscovered’ in the Eastern Indian Ocean

Giant clams are ecologically important coral reef animals, with many species facing imminent local extinction. While many regions have undertaken recent assessments of their biodiversity assets, persistent gaps remain even in otherwise well-surveyed areas. This study sought to understand the geographic distribution of smaller-bodied and morphologically similar giant clams, specifically Tridacna maxima and T. noae, in the eastern Indian Ocean. Due to the difficulties in reliably identifying these species using morphological characters, we confirmed species identity and investigated intraspecific variation using sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene (COI). Seventy whole animal vouchers were newly sampled from a 1500 km span of remote northwestern Australian coastline over a decade, as part of an ongoing coral reef survey expedition of the Western Australian Museum and partners. Tridacna maxima had a limited distribution and was only genotyped from offshore oceanic reefs in the Rowley Shoals and Cocos Keeling Islands. In contrast, T. noae was well established beyond Ningaloo Reef, and was abundant at inshore sites throughout the Pilbara and Kimberley, and even offshore to Ashmore Reef. Phylogeographically, T. maxima did not group with conspecifics from the Western Pacific Ocean, including the east coast of Australia, but instead clustered with individuals from Malaysia, China, Taiwan, and Indonesia; T. noae exhibited a similar pattern. The affinity of Western Australian individuals with representatives from the Indo-Malay region and not eastern Australia will be an important consideration for these commercially important species. Novel haplotypes in both tested species occur in Western Australia. Continued sampling of eastern and central Indian Ocean giant clams, especially to continue to document the range of T. noae, is encouraged to understand connectivity in this basin. Together, these findings contribute to an improved baseline for conservation initiatives of these iconic coral reef animals in Western Australia. Full article

Cultural tourism can act as a driver for inner area development, bringing about a range of socio-economic benefits through economic stimulation, quality of life improvement, and cultural heritage preservation. Inner territories, set apart by geographic marginality and low population density, hold a rich cultural and environmental heritage that, however, remains off the radar and left behind. Guided by the principles of endogenous local development, this article seeks to contribute to the existing body of research by proposing potential strategies for local growth rooted in cultural tourism. From this perspective, we identified the Basilicata region (Southern Italy) as a proper test area. The region is rich in archaeological, monumental and museum evidence, but is characterized, except in a few areas, by a low rate of tourist turnout. Through a replicable, comprehensive, and flexible methodology—drawing on bibliographic research, analysis of archaeological, archival, erudite and antiquarian sources, and carrying out field surveys—the different points of interest in the region have been brought together under specific cultural themes. Results include the design of three detailed routes (Via Herculia, Frederick II’s, and St Michael’s cultural routes) useful for three different types of tourism (sustainable, emotional, and accessible). Possible scenarios for valorization and fruition are also proposed, paying particular attention to digital technologies. Thus, this research aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 11 promoting cultural heritage valorization and preservation, shoring up economic revitalization, stepping up community engagement, and pushing forward environmentally friendly tourism practices. Research findings can attract the interest of a wide range of stakeholders such as tourism professionals, local authorities, cultural and creative industries, local communities and entrepreneurs, as well as academics and researchers. The methodological approach can be considered for the valorization and tourist enjoyment of inner areas in other countries, with particular focus on those falling within the Mediterranean region which is rich in cultural heritage, environmental value, and socio-economic potential. In their evolution from conservation places of isolated resources to social spaces in service of communities, museums are increasingly called to express their representative character towards their originating territories. Furthermore, the museum’s mission has been gradually enriched with new, more complex functions towards local communities, through a call to actively confront with their contexts, a trend the recent pandemic events have only accelerated. Cultural heritage, with museums at the forefront, as an acknowledged driver of socioeconomic development, has manifold impacts on territories, which have been identified and investigated in the literature, often from a potential perspective. Given the strong territorial component of the museum heritage connection with its reference context, this study aims to investigate the contribution that mapping and GIS technologies, traditionally employed at the scale of single museum buildings, can offer in assessing the actual “living” presence of museums in the local socioeconomic and productive fabric, through the relationships with other reference entities in the territories and their outreach. Taking a sample with a marked nature of spatially ‘distributed’ heritage (archaeologic museums of the Puglia region, South Italy) as a case study, the article presents a mapped representation of a questionnaire-based survey of museums’ recent territorial relationships. The twofold outcomes of the study show, on the one hand, that the investigated sample still experiences criticalities in fully expressing and communicating its potentialities and values in the current scenario and, on the other hand, that mapping technologies can concretely contribute to the museum sector’s innovation by examining its territorial relationships, in line with the current conceptual evolution, also with possible implications on museums’ quality assessment. In the Spanish Empire, the term mestizo/mestiza denoted, overwhelmingly, people of so-called “mixed” European and indigenous ancestry, but there existed also some regional adaptations with differing genealogies such as the mestizos de sangley in the Philippines. The article traces some developments of the application and racialization of the term mestizo shortly after the end of the Spanish Empire in the Philippines under U.S. rule. It will look at photographs that were taken in by Dean Worcester, secretary of the interior, and his staff, in order to apply and develop theories of the biologist racism, which in the early twentieth century was en vogue all over the globe. Worcester and his crew took the photographs during their expeditions and used them to illustrate their hypotheses about racialized taxonomies, adapting and further developing Spanish colonial ideas. I will contrast them with a photograph from a local studio in Mindanao. The photographs stem from the photographic collection of the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne, Germany. Full article

Smart guidance systems in museums and galleries are now essential for delivering quality user experiences. Visually impaired visitors face significant barriers when navigating galleries due to existing smart guidance systems’ dependence on visual cues like QR codes, manual numbering, or static beacon positioning. These traditional methods often fail to provide adaptive navigation and meaningful content delivery tailored to their needs. In this paper, we propose a novel Mobile-AI-based Smart Docent System that seamlessly integrates real-time navigation and depth of guide services to enrich gallery experiences for visually impaired users. Our system leverages camera-based on-device processing and adaptive BLE-based localization to ensure accurate path guidance and real-time obstacle avoidance. An on-device object detection model reduces delays from large visual data processing, while BLE beacons, fixed across the gallery, dynamically update location IDs for better accuracy. The system further refines positioning by analyzing movement history and direction to minimize navigation errors. By intelligently modulating audio content based on user movement—whether passing by, approaching for more details, or leaving mid-description—the system offers personalized, context-sensitive interpretations while eliminating unnecessary audio clutter. Experimental validation conducted in an authentic gallery environment yielded empirical evidence of user satisfaction, affirming the efficacy of our methodological approach in facilitating enhanced navigational experiences for visually impaired individuals. These findings substantiate the system’s capacity to enable more autonomous, secure, and enriched cultural engagement for visually impaired individuals within complex indoor environments. RSSI-based proximity positioning is a well-established technique for indoor localization, featuring simplicity and cost-effectiveness, requiring low-price and off-the-shelf hardware. However, it suffers from low accuracy (in NLOS traffic), noise, and multipath fading issues. In large complex spaces, such as museums, where heavy visitor traffic is expected to seriously impact the ability to maintain LOS, RSSI coupled with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) seems ideal in terms of market availability, cost-/energy-efficiency and scalability that affect competing technologies, provided it achieves adequate accuracy. Our work reports and discusses findings of a BLE/RSSI-based pilot, implemented at the Museum of Modern Greek Culture in Athens, involving eight buildings with 47 halls with diverse areas, shapes, and showcase layouts. Wearable visitor BLE beacons provided cell-level location determined by a prototype tool (VTT), integrating in its architecture different functionalities: raw RSSI data smoothing with Kalman filters, hybrid positioning provision, temporal methods for visitor cell prediction, spatial filtering, and prediction based on popular machine learning classifiers. Visitor movement modeling, based on critical parameters influencing signal measurements, provided scenarios mapped to popular behavioral models. One such model, “ant”, corresponding to relatively slow nomadic cell roaming, was selected for basic experimentation. Pilot implementation decisions and methods adopted at all layers of the VTT architecture followed the overall concept of simplicity, availability, and cost-efficiency, providing a maximum infrastructure cost of 8 Euro per m2 covered. A total 15 methods/algorithms were evaluated against prediction accuracy across 20 RSSI datasets, incorporating diverse hall cell allocations and visitor movement patterns. RSSI data, temporal and spatial management with simple low-processing methods adopted, achieved a maximum prediction accuracy average of 81.53% across all datasets, while ML algorithms (Random Forest) achieved a maximum prediction accuracy average of 87.24%. This study analyses sentiments and thematic trends in TripAdvisor reviews of mountain museums, using Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modelling and sentiment analysis. A dataset of 2157 reviews from ten museums was classified into local and non-local perspectives, revealing significant differences in visitor expectations. Findings indicate that local visitors prioritize historical authenticity and educational value, whereas non-local visitors emphasize aesthetic appeal, interactivity, and cultural immersion. Sentiment analysis highlights generally positive perceptions, with business travellers and groups of friends reporting the highest satisfaction levels. Comparative analysis across visitor types reveals distinct engagement patterns, with families valuing child-friendly exhibits, couples seeking cultural enrichment, and solo travellers focusing on intellectual depth. These insights inform strategic recommendations for museum management, including multilingual content, interactive elements, and guided tours dedicated to specific visitor profiles. Despite limitations related to lack of real-time feedback, this research demonstrates the potential of sentiment analysis in enhancing museum experiences. Future studies should integrate multimodal analysis and real-time tracking to further refine visitor experience evaluation. Full article

Herbert D. Athearn (1923–2011) was an avid student of freshwater mollusks. He named his private shell collection “The Museum of Fluviatile Mollusks”, which was meticulously organized at his residence. This collection was curated to current museum standards with detailed labels, all lots with catalog numbers, and all unionoid valves with catalog numbers written in India ink. Specimens’ collecting dates span between 1850 and 2005, with 23,344 cataloged lots containing over 3000 lots of imperiled and extinct taxa. All data for each of the lots are handwritten in paper catalogs. Many lots contain growth series from the smallest juveniles to the largest specimens seen. He traded extensively with collectors worldwide, obtaining specimens from 84 countries. This collection was donated to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in 2007. To date, 64 percent of this collection has been databased using a relational database, totaling 589,995 specimens. The collection consists of bivalves, primarily Unionidae, Margaritiferidae, and Sphaeriidae, as well as gastropods. There are 73 families represented, with the greatest abundance found in freshwater Pleuroceridae. The Athearn collection donation included his correspondence, his library, field notes, and USGS topographic maps with marked field localities. Full article

The current study presents new records and an updated checklist of the genus Sarcophaga (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) for Greece. The records were compiled from published literature, identification of newly collected material obtained through passive (trapping) and active (hand collecting, net sweeping) sampling conducted between 2018 and 2024, and the examination of material from two museum collections: Entomological Collection of the Goulandris Natural History Museum (1983–1987) and the Melissotheque of the Aegean (2004–2024). After the examination of 927 male specimens from 108 localities and the synthesis of the available literature, a total of 72 species distributed across 18 subgenera were documented. Among these, Sarcophaga ferox (Villeneuve, 1908) and Sarcophaga anaces (Walker, 1849) are newly records for Greece, while Sarcophaga beckiana (Lehrer, 1996) represents the first documented occurrence of the species in Europe. The findings represent the most contemporary contribution to the understanding of the species diversity and distribution of the genus Sarcophaga in Greece. Full article
