This article provides a critical review of the current design and research challenges in contemporary timber architecture. Conducted from the perspective of a designer-researcher, the review focuses on the role of wood as a material at the intersection of environmental performance, cultural meaning, and spatial practice. The study adopts a conceptual, problem-oriented approach, eschewing the conventional systematic aggregation of existing data. The objective of this study is to identify, interpret and categorise the key issues that are shaping the evolving discourse on timber architecture. The analysis is based on peer-reviewed literature published between 2020 and 2025, sourced from the Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection databases. Fifteen thematic challenges have been identified and classified according to their recognition level in academic and design contexts. The subjects under discussion include well-established topics, such as life cycle assessment and carbon storage, as well as less commonly explored areas, such as symbolic durability, social acceptance, traceability, and the upcycling of low-grade wood. The review under consideration places significant emphasis on the importance of integrating technical, cultural, and perceptual dimensions when evaluating timber architecture. The article proposes an interpretive framework combining design thinking and transdisciplinary insights. This framework aims to bridge disciplinary gaps and provide a coherent structure for understanding the complexity of timber-related challenges. The framework under discussion here encourages a broader understanding of wood as not only a sustainable building material but also a vehicle for systemic transformation in architectural culture and practice. The study’s insights may support designers, educators, and policymakers in identifying strategic priorities for the development of future-proof timber-based design practices. Full article

Postoperative Recovery of Balance Function in Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A 12-Month Longitudinal Study Using the Brief BESTest and Its Association with Patient-Reported Outcomes

Study Design: Prospective observational study. Background: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) impairs balance and gait function, increasing fall risk and limiting quality of life. Although postoperative recovery of balance is clinically important, longitudinal data using multidimensional balance assessments are limited. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in 101 patients (mean age 74.9 ± 6.9 years) undergoing surgery for LSS. The Brief Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Brief BESTest), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES), Zurich Claudication Questionnaire (ZCQ), and Visual Analog Scales (VAS) for pain/numbness were evaluated preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Changes over time and correlations between Brief BESTest and PROMs were analyzed. Results: The total Brief BESTest score significantly improved from 13.3 ± 5.3 preoperatively to 16.1 ± 5.1 at 6 months and 16.0 ± 5.1 at 12 months (p < 0.01). Subdomains including Anticipatory Adjustments, Postural Responses, Sensory Orientation, and Stability in Gait improved significantly, while Stability Limits did not. At 12 months postoperatively, ODI decreased by 19.1%, ZCQ symptom and function scores improved by 0.8 and 0.9 points, respectively, and VAS scores improved by 17.1 mm for low back pain, 26.5 mm for lower limb pain, and 19.5 mm for numbness, all showing marked improvements from baseline. MFES also increased significantly postoperatively. The Brief BESTest score correlated significantly with MFES and ZCQ-PFS at baseline, and with ODI, ZCQ, and VAS scores at 12 months. Conclusions: Balance ability in LSS patients improved after surgery, as measured by the Brief BESTest, with clinically meaningful changes maintained for 12 months. Improvements in balance were significantly associated with reductions in pain, disability, and fear of falling, suggesting the Brief BESTest is a comprehensive indicator of postoperative recovery. Background/Objectives: Correction surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD) reduces disability but may lead to spinal stiffness. Cultural diversity may also influence how this stiffness affects daily life. We aimed to evaluate the impact of correction surgery on Japanese patients with ASD using a newly developed questionnaire and to clarify how these patients adapt to their living environment postoperatively in response to spinal stiffness. Methods: This retrospective study included 74 Japanese patients with operative ASD (mean age: 68.2 ± 7.5 years; fusion involving >5 levels) with a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Difficulties in performing various activities of daily living (ADLs) were assessed using a novel 20-item questionnaire tailored to the Oriental lifestyle. The questionnaire also evaluated lifestyle and environmental changes after surgery. Sagittal and coronal spinal parameters were measured using whole-spine radiographs, and clinical outcomes were assessed using the ODI and SRS-22 scores. Results: Coronal and sagittal alignment significantly improved postoperatively. Although the total ADL score remained unchanged, four trunk-bending activities showed significant deterioration. The lower instrumented vertebrae level and pelvic fusion were associated with lower scores in 11 items closely related to trunk bending or the Oriental lifestyle. After surgery, 61% of patients switched from a Japanese-style mattress to a bed, and 72% swapped their low dining table for one with chairs. Both the ODI and SRS-22 scores showed significant postoperative improvements. Conclusions: Trunk-bending activities worsened postoperatively in Japanese patients with ASD, especially those who underwent pelvic fusion. Additionally, patients often modified their living environment after surgery to accommodate spinal stiffness. Full article

This study examines the effectiveness of energy-based models for fatigue life prediction of additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)/graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) composites. The effects of varying GNP weight percentages and filament raster orientations on the fatigue life of the samples were investigated theoretically. The required stress and strain values for use in energy-based models were obtained by solving two sets of Neuber and Ramberg–Osgood equations, utilizing the available values of notch strength reduction factors at each load level and the average Young modulus for each composite material. Results revealed that none of the studied energy-based models could accurately predict the fatigue life of the samples across the entire high- and low-cycle fatigue regimes, with strong dependence on the stress ratio (R). Instead, a novel fatigue life prediction model was developed by combining two existing energy-based models, incorporating stress ratio dependence for cases with negative mean stress. This model was tested for R values roughly between −0.22 and 0. Results showed that, for all samples at each raster orientation, most of the predicted fatigue lives fell within the upper and lower bounds, with a factor of ±2 across the entire range of load levels. These findings highlight the reliability of the proposed model for a wide range of R values when mean stress is negative. Full article

Background: Digital technologies offer innovative opportunities for recovering and maintaining intellectual and mental health. The use of a multitask approach that combines motor component with various cognitive tasks in a virtual environment can optimize cognitive and physical functions and improve the quality of life of cardiac surgery patients. This study aimed to localize current sources of theta and alpha power in patients who have undergone virtual multitask training (VMT) and a control group in the early postoperative period of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: A total of 100 male CABG patients (mean age, 62.7 ± 7.62 years) were allocated to the VMT group (n = 50) or to the control group (n = 50). EEG was recorded in the eyes-closed resting state at baseline (2–3 days before CABG) and after VMT course or approximately 11–12 days after CABG (the control group). Power EEG analysis was conducted and frequency-domain standardized low-resolution tomography (sLORETA) was used to assess the effect of VMT on brain activity. Results: After VMT, patients demonstrated a significantly higher density of alpha-rhythm (7–9 Hz) current sources (t > −4.18; p < 0.026) in Brodmann area 30, parahippocampal, and limbic system structures compared to preoperative data. In contrast, the control group had a marked elevation in the density of theta-rhythm (3–5 Hz) current sources (t > −3.98; p < 0.017) in parieto-occipital areas in comparison to preoperative values. Conclusions: Virtual reality-based multitask training stimulated brain regions associated with spatial orientation and memory encoding. The findings of this study highlight the importance of neural mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of multitask interventions and will be useful for designing and conducting future studies involving VR multitask training. Background: The aim was to explore the association between coping strategies (CSs) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in breast cancer (BC) survivors and to analyze the role of relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 305 women under follow-up for surgically treated BC in Spain. CSs were measured using the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Scale and the HRQoL with the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results: The mean age at BC diagnosis for participants was 57.4 years, with 60.3% of diagnoses at the local stage. Most frequent complementary treatments were radiotherapy (53.4%) and chemotherapy (33.1%). Adaptative CS scores were positively associated both with higher physical HRQoL (adjusted regression coefficient: 2.19; 95% confidence interval: 0.11; 4.27, p-value: 0.039) and mental HRQoL scores (coef.: 2.65: 95%CI: 0.25; 5.04, p-value: 0.030). Maladaptive CS scores were inversely associated with mental HRQoL scores (coef.: −3.92; 95%CI: −6.62; −1.22, p-value: 0.005). The effects were stronger among women with a favorable BC prognosis. Conclusions: Adaptive CSs positively affected the physical and mental HRQoL, while maladaptive CSs negatively affected the mental HRQoL. Therefore, psychosocial interventions that promote adaptive CSs and avoid maladaptive ones could improve the well-being of women with a favorable BC prognosis. Full article

This study responds to the urgent need for education that fosters sustainable, self-directed development by introducing a five-phase narrative instruction pre-module grounded within the Life Design Thinking (LDT) framework. Integrating design thinking with narrative theory, LDT promotes learner agency, identity coherence, and adaptive future planning through structured autobiographical reflection. The intervention was conducted in a group setting with 14 adult learners (n = 14) from China. Although participant demographics were not the primary focus, the study emphasized theoretical and methodological development through iterative instructional design. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including rubric-based scoring of 101 written narratives and a thematic analysis of the reflective content. The results demonstrated significant improvements in narrative competence, especially in technical application (+80.91%), reflective depth (+70.0%), with thematic clarity (+58.11%), also showing notable gains related to meaning synthesis and narrative focus. Learners also exhibited enhanced thematic continuity and future-oriented integration. These outcomes highlight the value of narrative pedagogy as a transformative learning approach aligned with SDG 4.7. By cultivating metacognitive awareness and future-readiness, the module contributes to education for sustainable development and provides initial evidence for a potentially scalable and transferable model that supports learners in navigating complexity with meaning and purpose. This article examines Wittgenstein’s wartime private notebooks (MS 101–103), shifting attention from his philosophical reflections on religion and prayer to the abundance of written addresses to God found within the coded sections. Wittgenstein’s well-known assertion that “to pray means to think about the meaning of life” is juxtaposed with direct invocations of God and the Spirit, including the Pater Noster and prayers for courage and submission to the divine will. These invocations, accompanied by strokes or varied long em dashes framed by dots or exclamation marks which Martin Pilch has hypothesized to be symbolic representations of prayers—invite further reflection. Wittgenstein’s religious utterances are not merely outpourings of anguish, but manifestations of a sustained effort to align both life and work with the will of God, and to offer them for His glory. A compelling illustration of this spiritual orientation appears in M. O’C. Drury’s recollection of Wittgenstein’s declaration that his only wish was for his work to conform to the divine will. The interplay between philosophical inquiry and prayer evokes the Confessions of Saint Augustine, a spirit present throughout Wittgenstein’s work. Augustine’s integration of prayer and confession has similarly inspired 20th-century thinkers such as Jacques Derrida and Jean-François Lyotard. These Augustinian traces challenge conventional understandings of language and its limits, as well as the role of written language and punctuation, demanding a profound hermeneutics of the philosopher’s prayer. WaveAtten: A Symmetry-Aware Sparse-Attention Framework for Non-Stationary Vibration Signal Processing

This study addresses the long-standing difficulty of predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of rolling bearings from highly non-stationary vibration signals by proposing WaveAtten, a symmetry-aware deep learning framework. First, mirror-symmetric and bi-orthogonal Daubechies wavelet filters are applied to decompose each raw signal into multi-scale approximation/detail pairs, explicitly preserving the left–right symmetry that characterizes periodic mechanical responses while isolating asymmetric transient faults. Next, a bidirectional sparse-attention module reinforces this structural symmetry by selecting query–key pairs in a forward/backward balanced fashion, allowing the network to weight homologous spectral patterns and suppress non-symmetric noise. Finally, the symmetry-enhanced features—augmented with temperature and other auxiliary sensor data—are fed into a long short-term memory (LSTM) network that models the symmetric progression of degradation over time. Experiments on the IEEE PHM2012 bearing dataset showed that WaveAtten achieved superior mean squared error, mean absolute error, and R2 scores compared with both classical signal-processing pipelines and state-of-the-art deep models, while ablation revealed a 6–8% performance drop when the symmetry-oriented components were removed. By systematically exploiting the intrinsic symmetry of vibration phenomena, WaveAtten offers a robust and efficient route to RUL prediction, paving the way for intelligent, condition-based maintenance of industrial machinery. Background/Objectives: Mental disorders that emerge during adolescence frequently extend into adulthood, predicting poor academic and employment outcomes and heavy societal burdens. Novel efforts to improve youth mental health have transitioned from clinical recovery, typically focused on a cure, to a strength-based approach to wellbeing in supporting youth within mental health services. Mental health scholars have appealed for interventions to adopt an ecological system of care approach that integrates the principal caregivers in a young person’s life. Despite preliminary literature indicating the importance of caregivers, little research has focused on the caregiver’s role in supporting personal recovery in youth. Methods: This study sought to understand the role of caregivers in youth recovery by employing a qualitative design to inductively analyze the narratives from nine semi-structured interviews with caregivers. Additionally, deductive analysis explored the core five underpinnings of personal recovery connectedness, hope, identity, meaning, and empowerment (CHIME). Results: A thematic analysis of the literature identified five themes: providing unconditional love and positive regard; encouraging connection with peers; co-creating a sense of purpose, meaning, and hope; supporting assertiveness and advocacy; and promoting strength and opportunity for mastery aligning with the CHIME framework. The findings will allow health services to understand caregivers’ roles better, thus providing information to guide recovery-oriented and family-centered care. Full article

Adherence to the Planetary Health Diet and Its Association with Diet Quality and Environmental Outcomes in Croatian University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: University students are at a critical life stage in terms of establishing lifelong dietary habits, yet little is known about the sustainability of their diets, especially in Croatia. This study aimed to assess the sustainability and environmental impacts of university students’ dietary patterns at the University of Rijeka using the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) and to explore the associations with demographic, lifestyle, nutritional, and environmental variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2023 to March 2024 among 224 students (54% male, mean age 22.7 ± 2.2 years). Data collection included sociodemographic information, physical activity, and dietary intake (semi-quantitative FFQ). Diet quality was assessed using the PHDI, Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS), and Dietary Inflammatory Index. Environmental impact indicators (carbon, water, and ecological footprints) were calculated using energy-adjusted intake data and standardized life cycle assessment data. Results: Students exhibited moderate adherence to the Planetary Health Diet (mean PHDI: 55.5). Higher PHDI scores were significantly associated with vigorous physical activity, higher MDS, and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns (all p < 0.001). Despite male students showing slightly higher PHDI scores, their diets had significantly greater environmental impacts. A one-point increase in the PHDI correlated with smaller environmental footprints (carbon: β = −7.94; water: β = −13.88; ecological: β = −3.15; all p < 0.001), with a significant decrease observed particularly in the lowest- and highest-adherence groups, while no consistent or significant effects were found in the intermediate groups. The nutrient and food group analysis supported the health-promoting profile of diets aligned with the PHDI. Conclusions: This study highlights the moderate sustainability of students’ diets, with significant associations between diet quality and environmental impacts. University settings present key opportunities for the promotion of sustainable, health-oriented eating behaviors among young adults. Full article

Expected lives of mechanical parts and structures depend upon the environmental conditions, their dynamic behaviours and the task-oriented spectra of different loadings. This paper exploits contactless full-field mobilities, estimated by Scanner Laser Doppler Vibrometry (SLDV), in the real manufacturing, assembling and loading conditions of the thin plate tested, whose structural dynamics can be described in broad frequency bands, with no distorting inertia of sensors and no numerical models. The paper derives the mobilities into full-field strain Frequency Response Functions (FRFs), which map, by selecting the proper complex-valued broad frequency band excitation spectrum, the surface strains. From the latter, by means of the constitutive model, dynamic stress distributions are computed, to be exploited in fatigue spectral methods to map the expected life of the component, according to the selected tasks’ spectra and the excitation locations. The results of this experiment-based approach are thoroughly commented in sight of non-destructive-testing, damage and failure prognosis, Structural Health Monitoring, manufacturing and maintenance actions. The theme of the current Special Issue, ‘Faith in Action: Examining the Power and Purpose of a Public Theology in Contemporary Society’, leaves a lot of scope for definition. Here, the theme is addressed via the lens of the public life and practice of a Christian congregation and its generative qualities pertaining to public trust. Such an approach contrasts with more formal public theologies which tend to favour intellectual or academic discourse. It will be argued that the life of a local faith community and its embodied public interface provides a better starting point as it can be seen as the most directly presupposed concrete and public context of the phrase ‘faith in action’. As an analytical conduit, the congregation is a neglected category for rendering a public theology, even as it lies at the heart of the Christian faith’s constitutive practice. Here, a particular form of public exchange drawn from local experience will be set against the background of the recent trend in ecclesiology to turn away from abstracted notions of the church towards more practice-orientated understandings. The dynamics of developing public trust will be considered through reflection on an oft repeated response offered from non-practicing observers of my local church’s work: ‘You do so much good in the community’. Although a seemingly simple (and positive) sentiment, such a comment in fact bears complex layers of meaning and subtextual inflections to which a minister and congregation might give heed in search of public trust. Sports participation among young people with disabilities offers significant physical, psychological, and social benefits, yet participation rates remain lower than among their non-disabled peers. This study, conducted in Hungary, explores how value orientations, health perceptions, and disability characteristics interact to shape sports engagement. Using a cluster analysis approach, we identified three distinct groups based on how young individuals with disabilities prioritize various life aspects. Data were collected through a survey of 771 participants aged 8–18, including individuals with diverse disability types. K-means clustering revealed three profiles: (1) a low sports activity group with moderate health consciousness, (2) a health-conscious group with broad life engagement but lower sports participation, and (3) a sports-oriented group that demonstrated strong interest in sports despite reporting lower self-rated health. The findings suggest that personal value orientation is a stronger predictor of sports participation than disability type or perceived health status. Furthermore, access to sports facilities alone does not guarantee participation, emphasizing the need for motivational and psychological interventions. These results highlight the importance of tailored, value-driven strategies in promoting physical activity among young people with disabilities, shifting focus from disability-specific adaptations to broader engagement-based approaches. Systems of national importance like national health care systems, even if historically and culturally diverse, are today facing similar problems. One way to address them is through responsible leadership orientations and practices that promote complex problem solving and multiple stakeholder relations. Here, we focus on challenges facing leaders in two historically distinct public health care systems, that of the UK (NHS) and the Republic of Slovenia (JZS), in terms of (a) costs versus care; (b) navigating regulations and bureaucracy; and (c) meeting the needs of staff versus patients. Then, we compare how responsible leadership, expressed in the form of the strategist versus integrator orientation of leader, could help to mitigate these problems. Analysing these two forms of responsible leadership, which successively express more mental maturity and practical acumen, illustrates their relative strengths in reconciling multiple economic and social interests, operational challenges, and public concerns in different national health system contexts. This highlights responsible leadership as a means to inform policy making and practice in public health care systems and opens up a vital discussion on the importance of leadership to ensure the human right to a healthy and fulfilling life.
