Background: The efficacy of intravenous iron preparations for chronic heart failure with iron deficiency has been reported, but the efficacy of oral iron preparations has not been demonstrated. In this study, we conducted a prospective clinical study using ferric citrate hydrate tablets in patients with chronic heart failure complicated by iron deficiency anemia. Methods and Results: A prospective study was conducted using ferric citrate hydrate in patients with chronic heart failure complicated by iron deficiency anemia. The registered patients were divided into two groups: those administered ferric citrate hydrate and those switched from iron sulfate sustained-release to ferric citrate hydrate. The primary endpoint was hemoglobin level. The secondary endpoints included hematocrit, serum iron, saturation, ferritin, and cardiac-, renal-, and hepatic-related biomarkers. A total of 141 patients were enrolled in this study, including 95 patients who were newly administered ferric citrate hydrate and 46 patients who were switched from iron sulfate sustained-release to ferric citrate hydrate. Conclusions: Ferric citrate hydrate significantly increased hemoglobin, serum iron, transferrin saturation (TSAT), and ferritin levels, and decreased atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. Ferric citrate hydrate could be continued without side effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms. Improvement in iron metabolism and anemia due to iron supplementation with ferric citrate hydrate led to improvement in heart failure biomarkers. Full article

Background/Objectives: The global shift towards vegan and vegetarian diets has garnered attention for their ethical, environmental, and potential health benefits. These diets are often rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, which have been associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), suggesting a potential protective effect against systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. However, despite these benefits, concerns remain regarding their impact on neurological health due to the possible deficiencies of critical nutrients such as vitamin B12, DHA, EPA, and iron. This review critically evaluates the influence of these dietary patterns on neurological outcomes, emphasizing their nutritional composition, potential deficiencies, and their interplay with inflammation and oxidative stress. Methods: A systematic review of the literature published between 2010 and 2023 was conducted, focusing on studies that explore the relationship between vegan and vegetarian diets and neurological health. Key nutrients such as vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and zinc were analyzed alongside antinutritional factors and their effects on the nervous system. Results: Evidence suggests that vegan and vegetarian diets, when well planned, can be rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, which have been associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). These findings indicate a potential role in reducing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are linked to neurodegenerative diseases. However, deficiencies in critical nutrients such as vitamin B12, DHA, EPA, and iron have been consistently associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline, mood disturbances, and neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, the presence of antinutritional factors like phytates and oxalates may further impair nutrient absorption, necessitating careful dietary planning and supplementation. Conclusions: While plant-based diets provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, their neurological implications depend on nutrient adequacy. Proper planning, supplementation, and food preparation techniques are essential to mitigate risks and enhance cognitive health. Further research is needed to explore long-term neurological outcomes and optimize dietary strategies. Full article

Objectives: Iron-deficiency anemia is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide. Polysaccharide–iron complexes (PICs), as novel organic iron supplements, have garnered increasing attention due to their high bioavailability, minimal gastrointestinal irritation, and favorable tolerability. However, different formulations of PICs can show significant variations in their physicochemical properties and bioavailability. These factors are crucial for clinical efficacy and safety. Methods: This study selected two formulations of polysaccharide–iron complexes: Formulation A (PIC-coated pellets) and Formulation B (PIC powders), with ferrous succinate tablets (Formulation C) used as a control. The focus was on evaluating the molecular weight of the polysaccharides, the levels of free iron, and the dissolution across various dissolution media. Physicochemical properties were compared through particle size analysis, dissolution rate testing, and free iron content determination. Additionally, the pharmacokinetic properties of the two PIC formulations were assessed in a beagle dog model of iron-deficiency anemia. Results: Significant differences were observed in particle appearance and content structure between the two PIC formulations. Formulation A, prepared using pellet technology, exhibited a uniform particle size distribution. Its dissolution rate in acidic environments was significantly lower than that of Formulation B. In simulated gastric fluid, the cumulative iron dissolution rate of Formulation A was less than 15% within two hours, while that of Formulation B exceeded 50%, with substantial batch-to-batch variability. In various dissolution media, Formulation A released 12% of its dissolved iron content in gastric fluid within two hours. In contrast, the absolute free iron content of Formulation B was 8.5 times higher than that of Formulation A in simulated gastric fluid. In the beagle dog model of iron-deficiency anemia, Formulation A showed significantly higher bioavailability, which suggests that the pellet preparation technology improves both the acid resistance and bioavailability of the PIC formulation. Conclusions: The study revealed that Formulation A, prepared using pellet technology, possesses unique quality characteristics. This technology significantly reduces the release of free iron from PICs due to gastric acid action, potentially minimizing gastrointestinal irritation. Moreover, the pellet preparation process improves the acid resistance and bioavailability of PIC formulations, offering a more effective therapeutic option for iron-deficiency anemia. Future research may further explore the potential applications of pellet technology in other iron supplement formulations. Full article

This study evaluated the trace mineral availability of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se) in major feed ingredients, including corn, wheat, soybean meal (SBM), and fish meal (FM). Additionally, we assessed the bioavailability of these minerals in pigs supplemented with inorganic, organic, and nano-sized forms prepared via hot-melt extrusion (HME). A total of 64 barrows (Yorkshire × Landrace × Duroc crossbreds) with an average initial body weight of 26.61 ± 4.12 kg were housed individually in metabolic cages. Pigs were allocated to eight experimental diets in a completely randomized design, with eight replicates per diet group. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of Zn and Cu was significantly higher in SBM and FM than in the other ingredients (p < 0.05). SBM exhibited higher ATTD and standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) for Fe and Mn than corn, wheat, and FM (p < 0.05). Corn and wheat demonstrated significantly greater digestibility of Se than SBM and FM (p < 0.05). Supplementation with nano-sized minerals prepared by HME increased the digestibility of Zn and Cu, as well as their concentrations in pigs’ serum and liver, while reducing the fecal excretion of these minerals (p < 0.05). Organic mineral forms significantly enhanced Se bioavailability, improving its digestibility and concentrations in the liver and pancreas compared to the inorganic form (p < 0.05). In growth performance, organic and nano-sized mineral sources significantly improved growth rate without the increase in feed intake (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Zn and Cu from high-protein ingredients such as SBM and FM were more digestible than those from grains. Furthermore, plant-based ingredients, such as corn, wheat, and SBM, exhibited greater digestibility of Fe and Se. Among the trace mineral sources, the organic and HME-nano forms improved the bioavailability of Zn, Cu, and Se, while reducing their fecal excretion, thereby enhancing the efficiency of mineral utilization. The use of food supplements (FSs) is becoming an increasingly common trend observed in society. This is related to frequently observed nutritional deficiencies and the inability to provide sufficient amounts of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, through the diet. The ease of registering FSs sometimes results in low-quality preparations on the market. Therefore, our research aimed to assess the content of one of the most popular trace element components, iron (Fe), in FSs available in Poland. This study covered 109 preparations purchased from stationary pharmacies and online pharmacies. The following criteria were used to characterize FSs in the data analysis: the Fe content declared by the manufacturer, pharmaceutical form, type of Fe salt, manufacturer’s country of origin, contents of other trace elements or minerals, presence of additional ingredients, age of the target group, and addition of vitamins B2, B6, B12, and C. The Fe content was quantified using atomic absorption spectrometry after mineralization using microwaves. It was demonstrated that 69.73% of the preparations contained more Fe than the value declared by the manufacturer (and corrected for permissible deviations), 11.00% contained less Fe than declared, and only 19.27% were within the norm. In summary, the FS market requires the improvement of manufacturing processes and increased control, which should translate into patient safety. Full article

Background. In high-income countries, shopping for non-prescription multivitamin–multimineral supplements has tremendously increased. Objective and Methods. The purpose of this labeling analysis is to inform on the daily elemental iron (with or without vitamin C) supply provided by multivitamin–multimineral supplements sold online by Amazon in Western and Southern Europe (amazon.es®, amazon.de®, amazon.it®, and amazon.fr®). Results. We identified 298 iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations sold by Amazon marketplaces: 153 preparations sourced from amazon.de®, 68 from amazon.fr®, 54 from amazon.it®, and 23 from amazon.es®. The daily iron dose provided by these preparations was 14 [5–14] mg (median and interquartile range), with no differences among the marketplaces. Approximately 90% (n = 265) of the preparations contained ferrous iron. Moreover, 85% (n = 253) of the preparations were fortified with vitamin C in a dose of 80 [40–100] mg daily. Conclusions. The median supply of iron (about 14 mg) and vitamin C (80 mg) in iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations offered on Amazon platforms in Western and Southern Europe falls below that currently recommended for iron deficiency in review articles, namely 100 mg of iron and 500 mg of vitamin C per day. The iron supply of iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations falls also below the dose of 30–60 mg advocated to prevent iron deficiency in menstruating women. Full article

Ferumoxytol injection, also known as Feraheme®, is an approved IV injectable iron supplement and an experimental MRI contrast agent. Initially, it was approved as an IV bolus agent, but its use was later limited to a slow infusion drip due to high levels of infusion reactions. We collected various batches of ferumoxytol with expiration dates ranging from 2010 to 2025 and compared their size and zeta potential. Since nanoparticle surface properties can affect infusion reactions, we conducted a dot blot immunoassay to measure complement C3 opsonization with ferumoxytol preparations. We observed differences in nanoparticle size and zeta potential between batches and a 2.5-fold variation in complement activation. Interestingly, older batches from 2010 showed more uniform size distribution and lower complement activation than some of the newer batches. This finding may be valuable to the nanomedicine community and regulatory authorities. Full article

At present, there are no data in the scientific literature on studies aimed at characterizing Passiflora caerulea L. growing in Bulgaria. The present study aimed to investigate the metabolic profile and elemental composition of the leaves and pulp of this Passiflora, as well as to evaluate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of its leaf and pulp extracts. The results showed that the pulp predominantly contained the essential amino acid histidine (7.81 mg g−1), while it was absent in the leaves, with the highest concentration being tryptophan (8.30 mg g−1). Of the fatty acids, palmitoleic acid predominated both in the pulp and in the leaves. A major sterol component was β-sitosterol. Fructose (7.50%) was the predominant sugar in the pulp, while for the leaves, it was glucose—1.51%. Seven elements were identified: sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc. The highest concentrations of K and Mg were in the pulp (23,946 mg kg−1 and 1890 mg kg−1) and leaves (36,179 mg kg−1 and 5064 mg kg−1). According to the DPPH, FRAP and CUPRAC methods, the highest values for antioxidant activity were found in 70% ethanolic extracts of the leaves, while for the ABTS method, the highest value was found in 50% ethanolic extracts. In the pulp, for all four methods, the highest values were determined at 50% ethanolic extracts. Regarding the antibacterial activity, the 50% ethanolic leaf extracts were more effective against the Gram-positive bacteria. At the same time, the 70% ethanolic leaf extract was more effective against Gram-negative bacteria such as Salmonella enteritidis ATCC 13076. The leaf extracts exhibited higher anti-inflammatory activity than the extracts prepared from the pulp. The obtained results revealed that P. caerulea is a plant that can be successfully applied as an active ingredient in various nutritional supplements or cosmetic products. Full article

An endophytic symbiont P. aeruginosa-producing anticandidal siderophore was recovered from mangrove leaves for the first time. Production was optimal in a succinate medium supplemented with 0.4% citric acid and 15 µM iron at pH 7 and 35 °C after 60 h of fermentation. UV spectra of the acidic preparation after purification with Amberlite XAD-4 resin gave a peak at 400 nm, while the neutralized form gave a peak at 360 nm. A prominent peak with RP-HPLC was obtained at RT 18.95 min, confirming its homogeneity. It was pH stable at 5.0–9.5 and thermally stable at elevated temperatures, which encourages the possibility of its application in extreme environments. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) against Candida spp. Were in the range of 128 µg/mL and lower. It enhanced the intracellular iron accumulation with 3.2–4.2-fold (as judged by atomic absorption spectrometry) with a subsequent increase in the intracellular antioxidative enzymes SOD and CAT. Furthermore, the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration due to cellular lipid peroxidation increased to 3.8-fold and 7.3-fold in C. albicans and C. tropicalis, respectively. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed cellular damage in the form of roughness, malformation, and production of defensive exopolysaccharides and/or proteins after exposure to siderophore. In conclusion, this anticandidal siderophore may be a promising biocontrol, nonpolluting agent against waterborne pathogens and pathogens of the skin. It indirectly kills Candida spp. by ferroptosis and mediation of hyperaccumulation of iron rather than directly attacking the cell targets, which triggers the activation of antioxidative enzymes. In pigs, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common disorder that occurs during the early postnatal period, leading to the stunted growth and increased mortality of piglets. The main cause of IDA is low iron stores in the liver of newborn piglets; these stores constitute the main source of iron needed to satisfy the erythropoietic requirements of the piglets in their first weeks of life. Insufficient iron stores in piglets are usually due to the inadequate placental iron transfer from the sow to the fetuses. Therefore, iron supplementation in pregnant sows has been implemented to enhance placental iron transfer and increase iron accumulation in the liver of the fetuses. Over the years, several oral and parenteral approaches have been attempted to supplement sows with various iron preparations, and consequently, to improve piglets’ red blood cell indices. However, there is debate with regard to the effectiveness of iron supplementation in pregnant sows for preventing IDA in newborn piglets. Importantly, this procedure should be carried out with caution to avoid iron over-supplementation, which can lead to iron toxicity. This article aims to critically review and evaluate the use of iron supplementation in pregnant sows as a procedure for preventing IDA in piglets. Full article

To investigate the mechanisms through which ferrous ion (Fe2+) addition improves the utilization of a cottonseed meal (CSM) diet, two experimental diets with equal nitrogen and energy content (low-cottonseed meal (LCM) and high-cottonseed meal (HCM) diets, respectively) containing 16.31% and 38.46% CSM were prepared. Additionally, the HCM diet was supplemented with graded levels of FeSO4·7H2O to establish two different Fe2+ supplementation groups (HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+). Juvenile Ctenopharyngodon idellus (grass carps) (5.0 ± 0.5 g) were fed one of these four diets (HCM, LCM, HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ diets) for eight weeks. Our findings revealed that the HCM diet significantly increased lipid peroxide (LPO) concentration and the expression of lipogenic genes, e.g., sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (srebp1) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase (scd), leading to excessive lipid droplet deposition in the liver (p < 0.05). However, these effects were significantly reduced in the HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ groups (p < 0.05). Plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration was also significantly lower in the HCM and HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ groups compared to the LCM group (p < 0.05), whereas low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentration was significantly higher in the HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ groups than in the LCM group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the plasma levels of liver functional indices, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and glucose (GLU), were significantly lower in the HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ group (p < 0.05). Regarding the expression of genes related to iron transport regulation, transferrin 2 (tfr2) expression in the HCM group and Fe2+ supplementation groups were significantly suppressed compared to the LCM group (p < 0.05). The addition of 0.4% Fe2+ in the HCM diet activated hepcidin expression and suppressed ferroportin-1 (fpn1) expression (p < 0.05). Compared to the LCM group, the expression of genes associated with ferroptosis and inflammation, including acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4b (acsl4b), lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (lpcat3), cyclooxygenase (cox), interleukin 1β (il-1β), and nuclear factor kappa b (nfκb), were significantly increased in the HCM group (p < 0.05), whereas Fe2+ supplementation in the HCM diet significantly inhibited their expression (p < 0.05) and significantly suppressed lipoxygenase (lox) expression (p < 0.05). Compared with the HCM group without Fe2+ supplementation, Fe2+ supplementation in the HCM diet significantly upregulated the expression of genes associated with ferroptosis, such as heat shock protein beta-associated protein1 (hspbap1), glutamate cysteine ligase (gcl), and glutathione peroxidase 4a (gpx4a) (p < 0.05), and significantly decreased the expression of the inflammation-related genes interleukin 15/10 (il-15/il-10) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, FeSO4·7H2O supplementation in the HCM diet maintained iron transport and homeostasis in the liver of juvenile grass carps, thus reducing the occurrence of ferroptosis and alleviating hepatic lipid deposition and inflammatory responses caused by high dietary CSM contents. With the development of urbanization, the demand for bricks continues to increase. However, traditional brick production methods result in significant energy consumption and environmental pollution. In Hebei Province, China, historical mineral extraction activities have left behind substantial iron ore tailings (IOT). With the objective of recycling IOT resources and promoting ecological restoration and sustainable development, the feasibility of producing alkali-activated bricks using iron ore tailings was explored. This study primarily utilized IOT supplemented with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) to successfully synthesize sustainable eco-friendly alkali-activated high-content IOT bricks. Experimental investigations were conducted to explore the effects of the raw material mixing ratio, content, and modulus of the alkaline activator, molding pressure, and grain size distribution on the strength. The research demonstrated that the IOT: GGBS ratio of 85:15 met the requirements of the Chinese JC/T422-2007 MU25 standard, resulting in compressive and flexural strengths of 31.72 MPa and 2.83 MPa, respectively. Increasing the alkali activator content enhanced the brick strength, with an optimal alkali activator modulus of 1 M. Moreover, the molding pressure significantly improved brick strength and also enhanced the particle-to-particle contact density. Bricks prepared using finer particle size IOT exhibited higher compressive strength, whereas flexural strength remained relatively unaffected by particle size distribution. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the microstructure and alkali activation mechanism of IOT-GGBS bricks was performed using XRD, SEM, FTIR, and AFM techniques. The results indicated that IOT primarily acted as an aggregate and partially participated in the reaction, whereas GGBS reacted extensively, generating C-S-H gel and C-A-H, providing robust bonding strength. Additionally, the increase in GGBS content led to the partial disintegration of some IOT particles, forming more stable aggregates under the influence of the C-S-H gel. This study offers theoretical guidance for the efficient utilization of IOT in construction materials, thereby contributing to the promotion of sustainable development and environmental conservation. The design, characterization, and analytical application of a green optical sensor for the selective determination of Fe(II) ions is proposed. The sensor is based on the immobilization of the chromogenic reagent picolinaldehyde salicyloylhydrazone (SHPA) within a polymer inclusion membrane. To reduce solvent usage, the reagent was synthesized using a green mechanochemical procedure. The components for sensor preparation were optimized with a sequential simplex method and the optimal composition was found to be 0.59 g cellulose triacetate (base polymer), 0.04 g SHPA (chemosensor reagent), 4.9 mL dibutyl phthalate (plasticizer), and 38 mL dichloromethane (solvent). The conditions of iron analysis were also optimized resulting in pH 6 for aqueous solution, 90 min exposure time and 10 min short-term stability. The optical sensor showed a linear range from the limit of detection (0.48 µmol L−1) to 54 µmol L−1 Fe(II). The precision of the method was found to be 1.44% and 1.19% for 17.9 and 45 µmol L−1 Fe(II), respectively. The characteristics of the sensor allowed the design of a Fe(II)/Fe(III) speciation scheme. The methodology was successfully applied to the determination of iron in food preservatives, food additives, and dietary supplement. Additionally, the Fe speciation scheme was successfully applied to an agricultural fertilizer. Full article

Several types of proteins are used in athletes’ supplementation; nevertheless, given the problem of protein deficiency in the world and the growing need for ecological sources of protein, it is very interesting to study the quality of alternative protein sources, such as insect protein. This study investigated the nutritional value, micronutrient content, amino acid profile, and chemical score of banded cricket protein quality in the form of flour, defatted flour, and a protein preparation, as well as popular commercial protein supplements. In addition, in vitro digestion was performed, and the antiradical activity of the hydrolysates was compared. Generally, the defatted cricket flour was the most similar to commercial supplements regarding nutritional value because it contained 73.68% protein. Furthermore, the defatted flour was abundant in essential minerals, such as iron (4.59 mg/100 g d.w.), zinc (19.01 mg/100 g d.w.), and magnesium (89.74 mg/100 g d.w.). However, the protein preparation had an amino acid profile more similar to that of commercial supplements (total content of 694 mg/g protein). The highest antiradical activity against ABTS·+ was noted for the defatted flour (0.901 mM TE/100 g) and against DPPH· for the cricket flour (2.179 mM TE/100 g). Therefore, cricket can be considered an organic protein source for the production of valuable protein supplements. Full article

Camel milk-based products have shown significant interest and remarkable growth in recent years. These products are valued as functional items due to their unique nutritional properties and potential health benefits. This study prepared fermented camel milk with the incorporation of unconventional ingredients, oat beverage and date palm fruit. Camel milk was mixed with 10% of Sukkari date paste with different concentrations of oat beverage (0, 25, 50, and 75%). The treatments were then fermented at 42 °C for roughly 3 h using ABT-5 starter culture. Multiple tests were then performed during the storage period to investigate the effects of oats supplementation on the characteristics of the prepared treatments. The results showed that the most favorable treatment was T2 (25% of oat beverage); it showed higher microbial activity by 2–7% compared to the control treatment, leading to a significant increase in total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. An increase in β-glucan content was also observed (0.05 g 100 g−1 DW), although more enhancements are suggested to reach at least 0.1 g 100 g−1 DW if considering β-glucan enrichment. Further, a significant increase in iron content was recorded in only T2 compared to other treatments; a decrease in phytic acid due to increased microbial activity in T2 is a possible explanation. Furthermore, T2 was the most liked treatment regarding taste, color, aroma, and texture. In conclusion, a 25% of oat beverage supplementation in fermented camel milk showed desirable effects and provided an innovative fermented camel milk. Investigating higher concentrations of more than 25% but less than 50% of oat beverages is suggested. Full article
