Carbon fiber-reinforced composites are popular due to their high strength and light weight; thus, the structures demonstrate high performance and specific strength. However, these composites are susceptible to impact damage. The objective of this research was to study the behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced laminates based on a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix with six stacking sequences under static and impact loading. Four-point bending, short-beam bending, drop weight impact, and compression after impact tests were carried out. The results were complemented with digital shearography to estimate the damaged areas. Finite element modeling served to assess the failure mechanisms, such as fiber and matrix failure, in different layers due to tension of compression. Three behavior pattern of layups under drop-weight impact were found: (i)—energy redistribution due to mostly linear behavior (like a trampoline) and thus lower kinetic energy absorption for damage initiation, (ii)—moderate absorption of energy with initiation and propagation of concentrated damage with depressed redistribution of energy in the material, (iii)—moderate energy absorption with good redistribution due to initiation of small, dispersed damage. The results can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of composites with different stacking sequences in materials for proper structural design. Full article

The concept of i-Energy as a new smart demand-side energy management system is proposed, which can realize the versatile and efficient control of e-power flows between distributed generators, numerous appliances, and energy storage systems in the home domain, factories, offices, and local communities. The Energy on Demand (EoD) system is proposed, which is the automatic power control and management system that supplies power to home appliances based on the power demand requests issued from the home appliances. The EoD system can guarantee the reduction in total power consumption by implementing a ceiling control while keeping the quality of life (QoL) of the home user considering the limitation of power supply. This paper proposes an adaptive battery storage management and control method based on the EoD system, which we call the “storage-supported EoD system”. In particular, the storage-supported EoD system can handle multiple power generators, including storage batteries. The overall goals of this paper are not limited to the extension of multiple power supplies only; rather, it provides additional contributions, which are (i) extend the existing power consumption control of home appliances and peak demand shift control (i.e., EoD system) by adding a second power source, i.e., a storage battery system; (ii) propose adaptive storage system design and management for the EoD system; (iii) realize minimum storage capacity for large peak power consumption; and (iv) minimize the home user’s discomfort level due to the limited power supply of one power source. The simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with a couple of experiments using real-life data in the smart apartment room. Additionally, simulation results are presented to compare and evaluate the proposed system performance with the EoD system. Full article

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology leads to new insights into the manipulation of quantum systems in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. Classical agent-based artificial intelligence algorithms provide a framework for the design or control of quantum systems. Traditional reinforcement learning methods are designed for the Markov Decision Process (MDP) and, hence, have difficulty in dealing with partially observable or quantum observable decision processes. Due to the difficulty of building or inferring a model of a specified quantum system, a model-free-based control approach is more practical and feasible than its counterpart of a model-based approach. In this work, we apply a model-free deep recurrent Q-network (DRQN) reinforcement learning method for qubit-based quantum circuit architecture design problems. This paper is the first attempt to solve the quantum circuit design problem from the recurrent reinforcement learning algorithm, while using discrete policy. Simulation results suggest that our long short-term memory (LSTM)-based DRQN method is able to learn quantum circuits for entangled Bell–Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (Bell–GHZ) states. However, since we also observe unstable learning curves in experiments, suggesting that the DRQN could be a promising method for AI-based quantum circuit design application, more investigation on the stability issue would be required. The hot-carrier effect and hot-carrier dynamics in GaAs solar cell device performance were investigated. Hot-carrier solar cells based on the conventional operation principle were simulated based on the detailed balance thermodynamic model and the hydrodynamic energy transportation model. A quasi-equivalence between these two models was demonstrated for the first time. In the simulation, a specially designed GaAs solar cell was used, and an increase in the open-circuit voltage was observed by increasing the hot-carrier energy relaxation time. A detailed analysis was presented regarding the spatial distribution of hot-carrier temperature and its interplay with the electric field and three hot-carrier recombination processes: Auger, Shockley–Read–Hall, and radiative recombinations. Quantum computing has the potential to outperform classical computers and is expected to play an active role in various fields. In quantum machine learning, a quantum computer has been found useful for enhanced feature representation and high-dimensional state or function approximation. Quantum–classical hybrid algorithms have been proposed in recent years for this purpose under the noisy intermediate-scale quantum computer (NISQ) environment. Under this scheme, the role played by the classical computer is the parameter tuning, parameter optimization, and parameter update for the quantum circuit. In this paper, we propose a gradient descent-based backpropagation algorithm that can efficiently calculate the gradient in parameter optimization and update the parameter for quantum circuit learning, which outperforms the current parameter search algorithms in terms of computing speed while presenting the same or even higher test accuracy. Meanwhile, the proposed theoretical scheme was successfully implemented on the 20-qubit quantum computer of IBM Q, ibmq_johannesburg. The experimental results reveal that the gate error, especially the CNOT gate error, strongly affects the derived gradient accuracy. The regression accuracy performed on the IBM Q becomes lower with the increase in the number of measurement shot times due to the accumulated gate noise error. Full article
