Background: Schizophrenia affects patients’ organizational thinking, as well as their ability to identify problems. The main objective of this study was to explore healthcare consultants’ application of AI mind maps to educate patients with schizophrenia regarding their perceptions of family function, social support, quality of life, and loneliness, and to help these patients think more organizationally and understand problems more effectively. Methods: The study used a survey research design and purposive sampling method to recruit 66 participants with schizophrenia who attended the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a hospital in central Taiwan. They needed to be literate, able to respond to the topic, and over 18 years old (inclusive), and they attended individual and group health education using AI mind maps over a 3-month period during regular outpatient clinic visits. Results: The study results show that patients’ family function directly affects their quality of life (p < 0.05) and loneliness (p < 0.05), satisfaction with social support affects quality of life and loneliness directly (p < 0.05), and satisfaction with social support is a mediating factor between family function and quality of life (p < 0.05), as well as a mediating factor between family function and loneliness (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, this study confirms the need to provide holistic, integrated mental health social care support for patients with schizophrenia, showing that healthcare consultants can apply AI mind maps to empower patients with schizophrenia to think more effectively about how to mobilize their social supports. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are becoming increasingly important for sustainable rural development through the smart village concept. This study aims to model ICT’s potential for public services management in European rural areas. It identifies ICT applications across rural service domains, analyzes how these technologies address specific rural challenges, and evaluates their benefits, implementation barriers, and future prospects for sustainable rural development. A qualitative content analysis method was applied using purposive sampling to analyze 79 peer-reviewed articles from EBSCO and Elsevier databases (2000–2024). A deductive approach employed predefined categories to systematically classify ICT applications across rural public service domains, with data coded according to technology scope, problems addressed, and implementation challenges. The analysis identified 15 ICT application domains (agriculture, healthcare, education, governance, energy, transport, etc.) and 42 key technology categories (Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, digital platforms, mobile applications, etc.). These technologies address four fundamental rural challenges: limited service accessibility, inefficient resource management, demographic pressures, and social exclusion. This study provides the first comprehensive systematic categorization of ICT applications in smart villages, establishing a theoretical framework connecting technology deployment with sustainable development dimensions. Findings demonstrate that successful ICT implementation requires integrated urban–rural cooperation, community-centered approaches, and balanced attention to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The research identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited digital competencies, and high implementation costs, providing actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners developing ICT-enabled rural development strategies. The incorporation of digital health into the medical curricula is becoming more important to better prepare doctors in the future. Digital health comprises a wide range of tools such as electronic health records, health information technology, telemedicine, telehealth, mobile health applications, wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. The present study aimed to explore the medical and biomedical students’ perspectives on the integration of digital health in medical curricula. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the medical and biomedical undergraduate students at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 37%. The majority of respondents were in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program (84.4%), while 29 students (15.6%) were from the BMS (Biomedical Sciences) program. A total of 55.38% agreed that they were familiar with the term ‘e-Health’. Additionally, 143 individuals (76.88%) reported being aware of the definition of e-Health. Specifically, 69 individuals (37.10%) utilize e-Health technologies every other week, 20 individuals (10.75%) reported using them daily, while 44 individuals (23.66%) indicated that they never used such technologies. Despite having several benefits, challenges exist in integrating digital health into the medical curriculum. There is a need to overcome the lack of infrastructure, existing educational materials, and digital health topics. In conclusion, embedding digital health into medical curricula is certainly beneficial for creating a digitally competent healthcare workforce that could help in better data storage, help in diagnosis, aid in patient consultation from a distance, and advise on medications, thereby leading to improved patient care which is a key public health priority. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) significantly affect patient safety and healthcare spending worldwide. Hospital pharmacists are uniquely positioned to address ADRs due to their crucial role in medication management. However, underreporting remains a global concern, especially in developing countries, where pharmacovigilance systems are inadequately developed. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitudes, perceived barriers, and facilitators regarding ADR reporting by hospital pharmacists in a developed (US) and a developing (Pakistan) country. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, using a pre-validated questionnaire. The pharmacists, possessing a minimum of one year’s hospital experience, were selected via convenience sampling. Out of 151 respondents, included in the final analysis (US: n = 51; Pakistan: n = 100), the majority were female (62.3%), aged 29–35 years (38%), and possessed a Pharm. D degree (49.7%). The knowledge (US: 6.03 ± 0.27 vs. Pakistan:5.69 ± 0.25, p-value = 0.193) and attitude scores (US: 32.02 ± 0.73 vs. Pakistan: 32.63 ± 0.67; p-value = 0.379) exhibited no significant differences between the groups. Nonetheless, barriers at both the individual and systemic levels were more pronounced in the developing country. Important facilitators reported were mobile applications for ADR reporting, specialized training, and intuitive reporting tools. In conclusion, we found that pharmacists in both settings exhibit comparable knowledge and positive attitudes towards ADR reporting, though specific contextual barriers are present. Interventions customized to the local hospital infrastructure are crucial for enhancing ADR reporting, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Full article

Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) symptom-checker apps are proliferating, yet their everyday usability and transparency remain under-examined. This study provides a triangulated evaluation of three widely used AI-powered mHealth apps: ADA, Mediktor, and WebMD. Methods: Five usability experts applied a 13-item AI-specific heuristic checklist. In parallel, thirty lay users (18–65 years) completed five health-scenario tasks on each app, while task success, errors, completion time, and System Usability Scale (SUS) ratings were recorded. A repeated-measures ANOVA followed by paired-sample t-tests was conducted to compare SUS scores across the three applications. Results: The analysis revealed statistically significant differences in usability across the apps. ADA achieved a significantly higher mean SUS score than both Mediktor (p = 0.0004) and WebMD (p < 0.001), while Mediktor also outperformed WebMD (p = 0.0009). Common issues across all apps included vague AI outputs, limited feedback for input errors, and inconsistent navigation. Each application also failed key explainability heuristics, offering no confidence scores or interpretable rationales for AI-generated recommendations. Conclusions: Even highly rated AI mHealth apps display critical gaps in explainability and error handling. Embedding explainable AI (XAI) cues such as confidence indicators, input validation, and transparent justifications can enhance user trust, safety, and overall adoption in real-world healthcare contexts. Background: This study examined risk factors for syndrome novel coronavirus 2 virus (SARS-CoV-2) infection and self-reported adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) measures among healthcare workers (HCWs) at a hospital in Thailand near the Myanmar border. Methods: From March to July 2022, HCWs aged ≥ 18 with COVID-19 exposure at Mae Sot General Hospital completed a questionnaire on IPC adherence, training, and COVID-19 knowledge. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected bi-weekly for SARS-CoV-2 testing. A mobile application was used for real-time monitoring of daily symptoms and exposure risks. Chi-square, Fisher’s exact tests, and log-binomial regression were performed to investigate association. Results: Out of 289 (96.3%) participants, 27 (9.9%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, with cough reported by 85.2% of cases. Nurse assistants (NAs) had a higher risk of infection (adjusted relative risk [aRR] 3.87; 95% CI: 0.96–15.6). Working in inpatient departments (aRR 2.37; 95% CI: 1.09–5.15) and COVID-19 wards (aRR 5.97; 95% CI: 1.32–26.9) was also associated with increased risk. While 81.7% reported consistent hand hygiene, 37% indicated inadequate IPC knowledge. Conclusions: HCWs, especially NAs and those in high-risk departments, should receive enhanced IPC training. Real-time digital monitoring tools can enhance data collection and HCW safety and are likely to be useful tools for supporting surveillance and data collection efforts. Full article

Background: The longitudinal RisCoin study investigated risk factors for COVID-19 vaccination failure among healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at a University Hospital in Germany. Since the hospital served as the study sponsor and employer of the HCW, we implemented a custom mobile application. We aimed to evaluate the implementation, adherence, benefits, and limitations of this study’s app. Methods: The app allowed secure data collection through questionnaires, disseminated serological results, and managed bidirectional communication. Access was double-pseudonymized and irreversibly anonymized six months after enrollment. Download frequency, login events, and questionnaire submissions between October 2021 and December 2022 were analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression identified factors associated with app adherence. Results: Of the 3979 participants with app access, 3622 (91%) used the app; out of these, 1016 (28%) were “adherent users” (≥12 submitted questionnaires). App adherence significantly increased with age. Among HCW, adherent users were more likely to be non-smokers (p < 0.001), working as administrators or nursing staff vs. physicians (p < 0.001), vaccinated against influenza (p < 0.001), and had not travelled abroad in the past year (p < 0.001). IBD patients exposed to SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.0133) and those with adverse events following the second COVID-19 vaccination (p = 0.0171) were more likely adherent app users. Despite technical issues causing dropout or non-adherence, the app served as a secure solution for cohort management and longitudinal data collection. Discussion: App-based cohort management enabled continuous data acquisition and individualized care while providing flexibility and anonymity for the study team and participants. App usability, technical issues, and cohort characteristics need to be thoroughly considered prior to implementation to optimize usage and adherence in clinical research. Full article

Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) are critical cardiovascular diseases that require rapid and accurate detection. Conventional approaches relying on multi-lead ECG or deep learning models have limitations in computational cost, interpretability, and real-time applicability on wearable devices. To address these issues, a lightweight and interpretable framework based on multiple complex networks was proposed for the detection of life-threatening VAs using short-term single-lead ECG signals. The input signals were decomposed using the fixed-frequency-range empirical wavelet transform, and sub-bands were subsequently analyzed through multiscale visibility graphs, recurrence networks, cross-recurrence networks, and joint recurrence networks. Eight topological features were extracted and input into an XGBoost classifier for VA identification. Ten-fold cross-validation results on the MIT-BIH VFDB and CUDB databases demonstrated that the proposed method achieved a sensitivity of 99.02 ± 0.53%, a specificity of 98.44 ± 0.43%, and an accuracy of 98.73 ± 0.02% for 10 s ECG segments. The model also maintained robust performance on shorter segments, with 97.23 ± 0.76% sensitivity, 98.85 ± 0.95% specificity, and 96.62 ± 0.02% accuracy on 2 s segments. The results outperformed existing feature-based and deep learning approaches while preserving model interpretability. Furthermore, the proposed method supports mobile deployment, facilitating real-time use in wearable healthcare applications. Full article

In Korea, the Public Health Center Mobile Healthcare Project was implemented in 2016. This project utilizes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and big data to establish a health-related service foundation and a healthcare service operation system. Equipment and methods: This study recruited 1261 adolescents (660 males (13.40 ± 1.14 years, 156.12 ± 10.59 cm) and 601 females (13.51 ± 1.23 years, 154.45 ± 7.48 cm)) from 22 public health centers nationwide. Smart bands were provided, and the ‘Future Health’ application (APP) was installed on personal smartphones to assess body composition, physical fitness, and physical activity. Results: A paired sample t-test revealed height, 20 m shuttle run, grip strength, and long jump scores significantly differed after 24 weeks in males. Females exhibited significant height, 20 m shuttle run, grip strength, sit-ups, and long jump differences. Moderate physical activity (MPA, p < 0.001), vigorous physical activity (VPA, p < 0.001), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA, p < 0.001) were significantly different after 24 weeks in adolescents. These results establish that an ICT-based health promotion service can provide adolescent students with individual information from a centralized organization to monitor health behaviors and receive feedback regardless of location in South Korea. This study explores the application of spiking neural networks (SNNs) for click-through rate (CTR) prediction in personalized online advertising systems, introducing a novel hybrid model, the Temporal Rate Spike with Attention Neural Network (TRA–SNN). By leveraging the biological plausibility and energy efficiency of SNNs, combined with attention-based mechanisms, the TRA–SNN model captures temporal dynamics and rate-based patterns to achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based models, such as Deep & Cross Network v2 (DCN-V2) and FinalMLP. The models were trained and evaluated on the Avazu and Digix datasets, using standard metrics like AUC-ROC and accuracy. Through rigorous hyperparameter tuning and standardized preprocessing, this study ensures fair comparisons across models, highlighting SNNs’ potential for scalable, sustainable deployment in resource-constrained environments like mobile devices and large-scale ad platforms. This work is the first to apply SNNs to CTR prediction, setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient predictive modeling and opening avenues for future research in hybrid SNN–ANN architectures across domains like finance, healthcare, and autonomous systems. Biomimetic robotics and sensor technologies are reshaping the landscape of healthcare and rehabilitation. Despite significant progress across various domains, many areas within healthcare still demand further bio-inspired innovations. To advance this field effectively, it is essential to synthesize existing research, identify persistent knowledge gaps, and establish clear frameworks to guide future developments. This systematic review addresses these needs by analyzing 89 peer-reviewed sources retrieved from the Scopus database, focusing on the application of biomimetic robotics and sensing technologies in healthcare and rehabilitation contexts. The findings indicate a predominant focus on enhancing human mobility and support, with rehabilitative and assistive technologies comprising 61.8% of the reviewed literature. Additionally, 12.36% of the studies incorporate intelligent control systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI), reflecting a growing trend toward adaptive and autonomous solutions. Further technological advancements are demonstrated by research in bioengineering applications (13.48%) and innovations in soft robotics with smart actuation mechanisms (11.24%). The development of medical robots (7.87%) and wearable robotics, including exosuits (10.11%), underscores specific progress in clinical and patient-centered care. Moreover, the emergence of transdisciplinary approaches, present in 6.74% of the studies, highlights the increasing convergence of diverse fields in tackling complex healthcare challenges. By consolidating current research efforts, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art, serving as a foundation for future investigations aimed at improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing quality of life. Background/Objectives: Mobile healthcare units (MHUs) comprise flexible, ambulatory healthcare teams that deliver community care services, particularly in underserved or remote areas. In Greece, MHUs were pivotal in epidemiological surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and are now evolving into a sustainable and integrated service for much-needed community-based healthcare. To support this expanded role, targeted, competency-based training is essential; however, this can pose challenges, especially in coordinating synchronous learning across geographically dispersed teams and in ensuring engagement using an online format. Methods: A nationwide, online training program was developed to improve the knowledge of the personnel members of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization’s MHUs. This program was structured focusing on four core themes: (i) prevention–health promotion; (ii) provision of care; (iii) social welfare and solidarity initiatives; and (iv) digital health skill enhancement. The program was implemented by the University of Crete’s Center for Training and Lifelong Learning from 16 January to 24 February 2025. A multidisciplinary team of 64 experts delivered 250 h of live and on-demand educational content, including health screenings, vaccination protocols, biomarker monitoring, chronic disease management, treatment adherence, organ donation awareness, counseling on social violence, and eHealth applications. Knowledge acquisition was assessed through a pre- and post-training multiple-choice test related to the core themes. Trainees’ and trainers’ qualitative feedback was evaluated using a 0–10 numerical rating scale (Likert-type). Results: A total of 873 MHU members participated in the study, including both healthcare professionals and administrative staff. The attendance rate was consistently above 90% on a daily basis. The average assessment score increased from 52.8% (pre-training) to 69.8% (post-training), indicating 17% knowledge acquisition. The paired t-test analysis demonstrated that this improvement was statistically significant (t = −8.52, p < 0.001), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing knowledge. As part of the evaluation of qualitative feedback, the program was positively evaluated, with 75–80% of trainees rating key components such as content, structure, and trainer effectiveness as “Very Good” or “Excellent.” In addition, using a 0–10 scale, trainers rated the program relative to organization (9.4/10), content (8.8), and trainee engagement (8.9), confirming the program’s strength and scalability in primary care education. Conclusions: This initiative highlights the effectiveness of a structured, online training program in enhancing MHU knowledge, ensuring standardized, high-quality education that supports current primary healthcare needs. Future studies evaluating whether the increase in knowledge acquisition may also result in an improvement in the personnel’s competencies, and clinical practice will further contribute to assessing whether additional training programs may be helpful. Technology-based strategies for the prevention and management of suicidal behavior are widely referenced for identifying vulnerable groups and for supporting clinical reasoning, decision-making, and appropriate referrals. In this study, we estimated the interface and content validity evidence of an interactive mobile application developed for managing suicidal behavior. This methodological study employed psychometric parameters to evaluate the content and interface of the mobile application, following five action phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. A total of 27 healthcare professionals participated, selected by convenience sampling, all working within the Psychosocial Care Network across different regions of Brazil. Data were collected using an electronic form, the Delphi technique for evaluation rounds, and a Likert scale to achieve consensus. The validity analysis was based on a Content Validity Index (CVI) equal to or greater than 0.80. The results showed that GerenciaVida, a technology developed for healthcare workers—regardless of their level of care or professional category—can be used to screen for suicide risk in the general population and indicate preventive alternatives. The app demonstrated satisfactory indicators of content validity (0.974) and interface validity (0.963), reflecting clarity (0.925), objectivity (1.00), adequacy (0.925), coherence (0.962), accuracy (0.962), and clinical relevance (1.00). The development path of this mobile application provided scientific, technological, and operational support, establishing it as an innovative care tool. It consolidates valid evidence that supports the identification, risk classification, and prevention of suicidal behavior in various healthcare contexts. Full article

Non-Invasive Telemonitoring in Heart Failure: A Systematic Review

Background and Objectives: Heart failure (HF) represents a major public health challenge worldwide, with rising prevalence, high morbidity and mortality rates, and substantial healthcare costs. Non-invasive telemonitoring has emerged as a promising adjunct in HF management, yet its clinical effectiveness remains unclear. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, we summarize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) between 2004 and 2024 examining the efficacy of non-invasive telemonitoring on mortality, readmission, and quality of life (QoL) in HF. In addition, we characterize the heterogeneity of features of different telemonitoring interventions. Results: In total, 32 RCTs were included, comprising 13,294 participants. While some individual studies reported benefits, non-invasive telemonitoring demonstrated mixed effects on mortality, readmission rates, and QoL. The most common modality for interfacing with patients was by mobile application (53%), followed by web portals (22%), and stand-alone devices (19%). Periodic feedback (63%) was more common than continuous feedback (31%) or on-demand feedback (6%). Clinician reviews of patient telemonitoring data was event-triggered (44%) more commonly than based on a prespecified timeline (38%). In most designs (90%), patients played a passive role in telemonitoring. Conclusions: Non-invasive telemonitoring interventions for HF exhibited considerable variation in duration and system design and had a low rate of patient engagement. Future work should focus on identifying telemonitoring-responsive subgroups and refining telemonitoring strategies to complement traditional HF care. Full article

Background/Objectives: Childhood cancer, although relatively rare, has a profound impact on the quality of life of affected children and their families. Technological advances have facilitated the development of mobile applications (apps) aimed at enhancing symptom monitoring and improving communication with healthcare teams. This systematic review aimed to analyse the effect of mobile applications on the health of children with cancer, with a specific focus on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed (Medline), CINAHL, Cochrane and Scopus databases using MeSH terms such as Smartphone, Mobile Applications, Child Health, Neoplasms, and Digital Health, with no date restrictions, and including studies published in English, Spanish or Portuguese. We included original research studies that examined the use of mobile apps in paediatric oncology patients. The search was completed in January 2025. Results: Of the 324 records initially identified, 14 studies (mainly pilot studies, early-phase clinical trials, and observational designs) met the inclusion criteria. Interventions commonly focused on symptom tracking (pain, nausea, fatigue), promoting treatment adherence, and delivering educational content. Several studies reported high user acceptance and a potential positive impact on HRQoL, particularly when gamification strategies were incorporated to sustain children’s engagement. Conclusions: Despite the preliminary nature and small sample sizes of most studies, mobile applications appear to be effective in supporting symptom management, communication, and health education in paediatric oncology. Their use may contribute to improvements in HRQoL. Further high-quality research involving younger children and diverse socio-cultural contexts is required to confirm their effectiveness.
