This study examined burnout syndrome (BS) levels in 133 Colombian health professionals, aiming to identify its prevalence and evaluate the psychometric properties of the CESQT scale. The first aim was to determine the presence of BS during the initial peak of COVID-19 infections in Colombia, revealing generally low levels among participants. The second aim involved an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the CESQT, which confirmed its alignment with the theoretical and psychometric model of the original Spanish version and the Colombian adaptation, demonstrating good internal consistency and a four-dimensional structure. Finally, the relationship between the MBI-HSS and CESQT scales was explored, showing statistically significant correlations that support convergent validity. These findings enhance the understanding and measurement of BS in health professionals and offer insights for intervention, prevention, and mental health promotion aimed at improving healthcare services quality in Colombia. Fallskip® Parameters and Their Relationship with the Risk of Falls in Older Individuals with and Without Diabetes

Background/Objectives: the assessment and prevention of fall risk is an essential component of healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations such as older adults with or without diabetes. The use of objective and validated tools to assess balance, gait, and other risk factors enables healthcare professionals to make informed clinical decisions and design personalized prevention programs. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted with a probabilistic sample of older patients, with and without diabetes, attending a podiatric clinic (Valencia, Spain). Methods: fall risk was assessed using the Tinetti Scale and the FallSkip® device, which measures posture (i.e., medial-lateral and anterior-posterior displacements), gait (vertical and medial-lateral ranges), turn-to-sit (time) and sit-to-stand (power) tests, total time and gait reaction time. Results: the results showed a significant association between the values obtained with FallSkip® and the Tinetti Scale (p < 0.001), identifying the older individuals at high risk of falls. The “reaction time” parameter measured by FallSkip® showed a significant difference between diabetic and non-diabetic patients (p < 0.05), as well as the balance score assessed by the Tinetti Scale (p < 0.05). Having experienced falls in the previous year had a strong (p < 0.001) significant influence on the results evaluated using both the Tinetti Scale and FallSkip®. Among the FallSkip® parameters in the multivariate analysis, the ‘Total Time (%)’ parameter significantly (p < 0.01, Exp(B) = 0.974 (CI 95%: 0.961–0.988) discriminates individuals with or without falls in the previous year. Conclusions: this study supports the usefulness of the FallSkip® device as an objective, efficient, and easy-to-use tool for fall risk assessment in primary care settings. Full article

Discrete-event simulation (DES) as an operations research (OR) technique has continued to evolve since its inception in the 1950s. DES evolution mirrors the advances in computer science (hardware and software, processing speed, and advanced information visualization capabilities). DES overcame the initial usability obstacles and lack of efficacy challenges in the early 2000s to remain a popular OR tool of “last resort.” Using bibliographic data from SCOPUS, this study undertakes a science mapping of the DES literature and evaluates its evolution and expansion in the past fifteen years. The results show asymmetrical but positive yearly literature output; broadened DES adoption in diverse fields; and sustained relevance as a potent OR method for tackling old, new, and emerging operations and production issues. The thematic analysis identifies DES as an essential tool that integrates and enhances digital twin technology in Industry 4.0, playing a central role in enabling digital transformation processes that have swept the industrial space in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and other sectors. DES integration with generative/artificial intelligence (GenAI/AI) provides a great potential to revolutionize modeling and simulation activities, tasks, and processes. Future studies will explore more ways to integrate GenAI tools in DES. Full article

Background/Objectives: Digital pathology has the potential to revolutionize pathology diagnostics, especially in geo-graphically isolated and underserved regions. By leveraging technology, telepathology, and integration with computer-aided diagnostic tools, digital pathology can improve access to prompt and accurate diagnostics. Methods: Our key steps to implementing digital pathology and transitioning operations to a digital network are assessing existing infrastructure, identifying gaps in connectivity and resources, and creating a workflow tailored to the needs of the healthcare system. Results: We present an approach of implementing digital pathology in Timmins, Northern Ontario, Canada, focusing on addressing regional disparities and the improvements that come alongside utilizing digital pathology. Our results show that digital pathology can provide prompt, efficient and better-quality diagnostic services to rural and un-deserved areas, improving patient care and outcomes. It also represents a cost-effective option with savings from eliminating travel costs, courier costs and additional operational efficiencies. Conclusions: Implementing digital pathology in rural settings presented with challenges related to infrastructure, technical abilities, workforce readiness, cost and other aspects involved in transitioning from traditional microscopy to a fully digital pathway. Digital pathology systems can help ensuring seamless data flow and improving overall healthcare delivery. Telepathology also allows pathologists to provide diagnostic services from a distance, which is particularly beneficial in areas with a shortage of pathologists. Full article

Ultraviolet (UV) and blue-light photodetectors are vital in environmental monitoring, medical and biomedical applications, optical communications, and security and anti-counterfeiting technologies. However, conventional silicon-based devices suffer from limited sensitivity to short-wavelength light due to their narrow indirect bandgap. In this study, we investigate the influence of precursor concentration on the structural, optical, and photoresponse characteristics of nanostructured CdS thin films synthesized via chemical bath deposition. Among the CdS samples prepared at different precursor concentrations, the best photoresponsivity of 21.1 mA/W was obtained at 2 M concentration. Subsequently, a p–n heterojunction photodetector was fabricated by integrating a spin-coated CuSCN layer with the optimized CdS nanostructure. The resulting device exhibited pronounced rectifying behavior with a rectification ratio of ~750 and an ideality factor of 1.39. Under illumination and a 5 V bias, the photodetector achieved an exceptional responsivity exceeding 104 A/W in the UV region—over six orders of magnitude higher than that of CdS-based metal–semiconductor–metal devices. This remarkable enhancement is attributed to the improved light absorption, efficient charge separation, and enhanced hole transport enabled by CuSCN incorporation and heterojunction formation. These findings present a cost-effective, solution-processed approach to fabricating high-responsivity nanostructured photodetectors, promising for future applications in smart healthcare, environmental surveillance, and consumer electronics. Introduction: With the emergence of the expert patient and the expansion of health literacy, the importance of planning and building health technologies aimed at teaching and training health professionals, especially nurses, due to their activities with patients in Primary Health Care, with the aim of meeting the real and constant demands of the expert patient, is evident. Methods: Methodological study with a quantitative approach. The course was constructed based on a scope review, scientific reference, and observational visits during the months of September 2021 and August 2022. For validation, an organized electronic form was used with general information about the research and items of the course constructed for later evaluation by the judges with the three-point Likert scale and with the application of the Delphi Technique between the months of September and October 2022; for the agreement of the judges, the Content Validation Coefficient > 0.8 was considered. Results: Based on the content selected in the scope review, the reference contribution, and the observational visits, the course was constructed. Nine judges participated in the validation stage in Delphi I with a total Content Validation Coefficient above 0.90 and with some suggestions for modifications and improvements pointed out by them. In Delphi II, six judges evaluated the course, resulting in a total Content Validation Coefficient of 0.99. Conclusions: The course developed was considered valid to support the training of Primary Health Care nurses in the formation of the expert patient, with a view to promoting patient autonomy in self-care management, optimizing Primary Health Care, and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. Two Machine Learning Models to Economize Glaucoma Screening Programs: An Approach Based on Neural Nets

Background: In glaucoma screening programs, a large proportion of patients remain free of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) or have no need of intraocular eye pressure (IOP)-lowering therapy within 10 years of follow-up. Is it possible to identify a large proportion of patients already at the initial examination and, thus, to safely exclude them already at this point? Methods: A total of 6889 subjects received a complete ophthalmological examination, including objective optic nerve head and quantitative disc measurements at the initial examination, and after an average follow-up period of 11.1 years, complete data were available of 585 individuals. Two neural network models were trained and extensively tested. To allow the models to refuse to make a prediction in doubtful cases, a reject option was included. Results: A prediction for the first endpoint, ‘remaining OAG-free and no IOP-lowering therapy within 10 years’, was rejected in 57% of cases, and in the remaining cases (43%), 253/253 (=100%) received a correct prediction. The second prediction model for the second endpoint ‘remaining OAG-free within 10 years’ refused to make a prediction for 46.4% of all subjects. In the remaining cases (53.6%), 271/271 (=100%) were correctly predicted. Conclusions: Most importantly, no eye was predicted false-negatively or false-positively. Overall, 43% all eyes can safely be excluded from a glaucoma screening program for up to 10 years to be certain that the eye remains OAG-free and will not need IOP-lowering therapy. The corresponding model significantly reduces the screening performed by and work load of ophthalmologists. In the future, better predictors and models may increase the number of patients with a safe prediction, further economizing time and healthcare budgets in glaucoma screening. Full article

(1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Oman, necessitating targeted healthcare planning and patient support. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on MS management and disease course, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19, psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic, and demographic and clinical predictors of the effects related to COVID-19 among Omani PwMS. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021. Adult (18–60 years) Omani PwMS completed a structured interview along with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and World Health Organization Well-being Index (WHO-5). Clinical data on relapses and disease-modifying therapies and adherence were analyzed. The data was statistically analyzed. (3) Results: Of 104 PwMS (73.1% female), 22.1% contracted COVID-19, with fatigue being the most reported symptom (87%). Female sex (p = 0.042), younger age (18–34 vs. 35–45 years; p = 0.014), diagnosis of COVID-19 (p = 0.037), and low current mental well-being scores (p = 0.021) predicted greater COVID-19-related effects. (4) Conclusion: These findings highlight the need to study the mental resilience of this subgroup of PwMS and provide them with targeted support during crises. Full article

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent disorder with significant systemic and oral health consequences. This narrative review synthesizes the current knowledge on the interplay between dental health and sleep apnea, highlighting the expanding role of dentists in the screening, early detection, and management of OSAS. Validated questionnaires, anatomical assessments, and anthropometric measurements have enhanced dentists’ capacity for early screening. However, knowledge and training gaps remain, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Dentists are uniquely positioned to identify anatomical and oral risk factors, facilitate referrals for diagnosis, and provide therapeutic interventions such as oral appliance therapy. Interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical professionals is essential to improve early detection, treatment outcomes, and patient quality of life. Enhancing education, standardizing protocols, and integrating dentists into multidisciplinary care pathways are critical steps for advancing the management of sleep apnea. Full article

Pain management in multiple trauma patients presents a complex clinical challenge due to competing priorities such as hemodynamic instability, polypharmacy, coagulopathy, and the urgency of life-saving interventions. In this context, peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are increasingly recognized as a valuable asset for their role in managing pain in patients with multiple traumatic injuries. By reducing reliance on systemic opioids, PNBs support effective pain control and facilitate early mobilization, aligning with enhanced recovery principles. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the use of PNBs in the context of polytrauma, focusing on their analgesic efficacy, integration within multimodal analgesia protocols, and contribution to improved functional outcomes. Despite these advantages, clinical application is limited by specific concerns, including the potential to mask compartment syndrome, the risk of nerve injury or local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST), and logistical barriers in acute trauma settings. Emerging directions in the field include the refinement of ultrasound-guided PNB techniques, the expanded use of continuous catheter systems, and the incorporation of fascial plane blocks for anatomically complex or multisite trauma. Parallel efforts are focusing on the development of decision-making algorithms, improved risk stratification tools, and integration into multimodal analgesic pathways. There is also growing emphasis on standardized clinical protocols, simulation-based training, and patient education to enhance safety and consistency in practice. As evidence continues to evolve, the long-term impact of PNBs on functional recovery, quality of life, and healthcare utilization must be further explored. With thoughtful implementation, structured training, and institutional support, PNBs may evolve into a cornerstone of modern trauma analgesia. Full article

Effective Endotoxin Reduction in Hospital Reverse Osmosis Water Using eBooster™ Electrochemical Technology

Endotoxins, lipopolysaccharides released from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, pose a significant risk in healthcare environments, particularly in Central Sterile Supply Departments (CSSDs), where the delivery of sterile pyrogen-free medical devices is critical for patient safety. Traditional methods for controlling endotoxins in water systems, such as ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, have proven ineffective at reducing endotoxin concentrations to comply with regulatory standards (<0.25 EU/mL). This limitation presents a significant challenge, especially in the context of reverse osmosis (RO) permeate used in CSSDs, where water typically has very low conductivity. Despite the established importance of endotoxin removal, a gap in the literature exists regarding effective chemical-free methods that can meet the stringent endotoxin limits in such low-conductivity environments. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of the eBooster™ electrochemical technology—featuring proprietary electrode materials and a reactor design optimized for potable water—for endotoxin removal from water, specifically under the low-conductivity conditions typical of RO permeate. Laboratory experiments using the B250 reactor achieved >90% endotoxin reduction (from 1.2 EU/mL to <0.1 EU/mL) at flow rates ≤5 L/min and current densities of 0.45–2.7 mA/cm2. Additional real-world testing at three hospitals showed that the eBooster™ unit, when installed in the RO tank recirculation loop, consistently reduced endotoxin levels from 0.76 EU/mL (with UV) to <0.05 EU/mL over 24 months of operation, while heterotrophic plate counts dropped from 190 to <1 CFU/100 mL. Statistical analysis confirmed the reproducibility and flow-rate dependence of the removal efficiency. Limitations observed included reduced efficacy at higher flow rates, the need for sufficient residence time, and a temporary performance decline after two years due to a power fault, which was promptly corrected. Compared to earlier approaches, eBooster™ demonstrated superior performance in low-conductivity environments without added chemicals or significant maintenance. Background/Objectives: Men have historically contributed significantly to mental health nursing, particularly in inpatient settings, where their presence has supported patient recovery and safety. Despite this legacy, men remain under-represented in the nursing workforce, and addressing this imbalance is critical to workforce sustainability. This study offers a novel contribution by exploring the lived experiences, motivations, and professional identities of men in mental health nursing, an area that has received limited empirical attention. The aim of the study is to examine the characteristics, qualities, and attributes of mental health nurses who are male, which contributes to their attraction to and retention within the profession. Methods: A qualitative interpretive inquiry was conducted among nurses who were male and either currently or previously employed in mental health settings. Two focus groups were conducted using semi-structured questions to explore their career pathways, motivations, professional identities, and perceived contributions. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes and patterns in their narratives. Results: Seven participants, with 10–30 years of experience, participated. They had entered the profession through diverse pathways, expressing strong alignment between personal values and professional roles. Five themes emerged and centred on mental health being the heart of health, personal and professional fulfillment, camaraderie and teamwork, a profound respect for individuals and compassion, and overcoming and enjoying the challenge. Conclusions: Mental health nurses who are male bring unique contributions to the profession, embodying compassion, resilience, and ethical advocacy. Their experiences challenge traditional gender norms and redefine masculinity in health care. Fostering inclusive environments, mentorship, and leadership opportunities is essential to support their growth. These insights inform strategies to strengthen recruitment, retention, and the future of mental health nursing. Full article

Background/Objectives: The pain associated with invasive procedures is one of the most common experiences in the pediatric population. Its management remains insufficient due to gaps in healthcare training and knowledge. The aim of this study was to analyze the attitudes, beliefs, care practices, and training of healthcare professionals in relation to pediatric pain, through the development and application of the questionnaire ‘Humanisation of Pediatric Care in Pain Management with a Non-Pharmacological Approach (HUPEDCARE-Q)’. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted to validate a questionnaire. The process was carried out in three phases: (1) design and initial development of the instrument; (2) evaluation of content validity through expert judgment, using the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC); (3) administration of the questionnaire to a large sample of healthcare professionals to assess its internal consistency and psychometric structure. Results: The evaluation involved five experts, and the items were assessed using the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC), with the overall CVC of the questionnaire exceeding 0.80. The average item scores given by the experts ranged from 0.88 to 0.95, indicating a high level of agreement in their evaluations. The results showed statistically significant positive correlations among most items (p < 0.001), indicating adequate internal consistency. Conclusions: The content validation and pilot study confirmed the theoretical relevance and appropriateness of the HUPEDCARE-Q questionnaire items in the Spanish context. The results support its usefulness as a valid and reliable tool to identify attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and training needs in the humanized management of pediatric pain. Full article

The increasing prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases poses a significant challenge in the modern world, impacting healthcare systems and individual life expectancy. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that older adults (65+ years) engage in 150–300 min of moderate-intensity or 75–150 min of vigorous-intensity physical activity, alongside muscle-strengthening and balance-training exercises at least twice a week. However, nearly one-third of the adult population (31%) is physically inactive, which increases the risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and psychological issues. Physical activity in the form of aerobic exercise, resistance training, or a combination of both is effective in preventing and managing these metabolic diseases. In this review, we explored the effects of exercise training, especially on respiratory and pulmonary factors, including oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, and blood gas analyses among adults. During exercise, oxygen consumption can increase up to 15-fold (from a resting rate of ~250 mL/min) to meet heightened metabolic demands, enhancing tidal volume and pulmonary efficiency. During exercise, the increased energy demand of skeletal muscle leads to increases in tidal volume and pulmonary function, while blood gases play a key role in maintaining the pH of the blood. In this review, we explored the influence of age, body composition (BMI and obesity), lifestyle factors (smoking and alcohol use), and comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, neurodegenerative disorders) in the modulation of these physiological responses. We underscored exercise as a potent non-pharmacological intervention for improving cardiopulmonary health and mitigating the progression of metabolic diseases in aging populations. Full article

Virtual Care Perceptions and Experiences of Older Adults During COVID-19 in Canada: A Systematic Review

Background/Objectives: Older adults (65+) are the fastest growing age group in Canada, comprising 18.8% of the country’s population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of virtual care, including telehealth and tele-medicine, increased dramatically among older adults in Canada who often face higher health risks, mobility limitations, and many barriers to accessing healthcare. Despite the rapid expansion in virtual care, no systematic review has focused specifically on virtual care among older adults in Canada. This review aims to explore the factors influencing virtual care adoption and the experiences of older Canadians during the pandemic through a systematic review. Methods: Conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the review involved a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, ESCBOHost, and Web of Science on 2 May 2025, yielding 281 unique citations. After screening and applying eligibility criteria, 15 studies employing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods designs, with sample sizes ranging from 15 to 2,282,798, were included and appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results: The review identified three domains of factors and the ways in which each factor shapes older adults’ virtual care experiences: (1) personal factors influencing virtual care use and demand (e.g., age, education, language, income, immigration status, community sizes), (2) resource factors impacting virtual care adoption (e.g., technology access, support), and (3) varying virtual care experiences among older adults (e.g., in assessment and communication efficacy, privacy, care quality, convenience, safety, and costs). Conclusions: This review highlights the complexities of virtual care engagement among older adults and underscores the need for inclusive, tailored strategies to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of virtual care delivery in both pandemic and post-pandemic contexts.
