Background/Objectives: Men have historically contributed significantly to mental health nursing, particularly in inpatient settings, where their presence has supported patient recovery and safety. Despite this legacy, men remain under-represented in the nursing workforce, and addressing this imbalance is critical to workforce sustainability. This study offers a novel contribution by exploring the lived experiences, motivations, and professional identities of men in mental health nursing, an area that has received limited empirical attention. The aim of the study is to examine the characteristics, qualities, and attributes of mental health nurses who are male, which contributes to their attraction to and retention within the profession. Methods: A qualitative interpretive inquiry was conducted among nurses who were male and either currently or previously employed in mental health settings. Two focus groups were conducted using semi-structured questions to explore their career pathways, motivations, professional identities, and perceived contributions. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes and patterns in their narratives. Results: Seven participants, with 10–30 years of experience, participated. They had entered the profession through diverse pathways, expressing strong alignment between personal values and professional roles. Five themes emerged and centred on mental health being the heart of health, personal and professional fulfillment, camaraderie and teamwork, a profound respect for individuals and compassion, and overcoming and enjoying the challenge. Conclusions: Mental health nurses who are male bring unique contributions to the profession, embodying compassion, resilience, and ethical advocacy. Their experiences challenge traditional gender norms and redefine masculinity in health care. Fostering inclusive environments, mentorship, and leadership opportunities is essential to support their growth. These insights inform strategies to strengthen recruitment, retention, and the future of mental health nursing. Full article

Background: Undercover police work is a psychologically high-risk profession that exposes officers to chronic stress, identity conflicts, and moral dilemmas. The aim of the present review is to evaluate the psychological consequences associated with undercover police work, focusing on specific psychopathological risk factors. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies were conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada. The present systematic review analyzed data from 380 current undercover operatives, 372 former UCOs, 578 officers without undercover experience, and 60 pre-operational agents. Results: From an initial pool of 365 records, 10 studies were identified, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently reported psychological risk factors included anxiety, hypervigilance, identity issues, dissociative symptoms, and substance misuse. These were assessed using validated self-report instruments (e.g., SCL-90), structured interviews, and clinical evaluations. Long-term consequences were more prominent post-deployment, particularly among former UCOs. Conclusions: Undercover work is associated with an elevated risk of mental health problems, especially after the end of operations. Future research should focus on standardizing assessment tools and identifying protective factors. The findings support the development of targeted interventions such as pre-deployment psychological screening, ongoing monitoring, and structured reintegration programs to safeguard UCOs’ well-being. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a worldwide challenge. There are an estimated 17–24 million patients worldwide, with an estimated 60 percent or more who have not been diagnosed. Without a known cure, no specific curative medication, disability lasting years to being life-long, and disagreement among healthcare providers as to how to most appropriately treat these patients, ME/CFS patients are in need of assistance. Appropriate healthcare provider education would increase the percentage of patients diagnosed and treated; however, in-school healthcare provider education is limited. To address the latter issue, the New Jersey Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association (NJME/CFSA) has developed an independent, incentive-driven, learning program for students of the health professions. NJME/CFSA offers a yearly scholarship program in which applicants write a scholarly paper on an ME/CFS-related topic. The efficacy of the program is demonstrated by the 2024–2025 first place scholarship winner’s essay, which addresses the biological basis of ME/CFS and how the healthcare provider can improve the quality of life of ME/CFS patients. For the reader, the essay provides an update on what is known regarding the biological underpinnings of ME/CFS, as well as a medical student’s perspective as to how the clinician can provide care and support for ME/CFS patients. The original essay has been slightly modified to demonstrate that ME/CFS is a worldwide problem and for publication. Full article

Early-career teachers (ECTs) entered the profession during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that introduced unique stressors to an already-demanding career phase. This systematic review examines empirical studies published between 2020 and February 2025 to explore how the pandemic influenced ECT wellbeing, with particular attention to stressors and protective factors impacting long-term retention and professional sustainability. Guided by PRISMA protocols, databases including Web of Science, ERIC, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched, screening 470 records and identifying 30 studies that met inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed, empirical, focused on early-career teachers (within the first five years), and situated in or explicitly addressing the pandemic and its ongoing impacts. The results of Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis (2006) revealed that pandemic-related challenges such as increased workload, professional isolation, disrupted induction processes, and emotional strain have persisted into the post-pandemic era, contributing to sustained risks of burnout and attrition. Regardless, protective factors identified during the pandemic—including high-quality mentoring, structured induction programmes, collegial support, professional autonomy, and effective individual coping strategies—continue to offer essential support, enhancing resilience and professional wellbeing. These findings underscore the necessity of institutionalising targeted supports to address the enduring effects of pandemic-related stressors on ECT wellbeing. By prioritising sustained mental health initiatives and structural supports, education systems can effectively mitigate long-term impacts and improve retention outcomes for early-career teachers in a post-pandemic educational landscape. Introduction: Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers, and healthcare managers should pay attention to the quality of work life and the health and working capacity of nurses in order to ensure a sufficient number of nurses and a stable workforce. Aim: The present study aimed to determine nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession and to examine the associations between nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 498 nurses completed the instrument, consisting of demographic data, Brooks’ Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey (BQNWL), Work Ability Index Questionnaire (WAIQ) and questions on their intention to leave their current job or the nursing profession. Results: Most nurses had a moderate quality of work life (QWL) (73.7%) and a good work ability index (WAI) (43.78%). Men (p = 0.047), nurses who study (p = 0.021), nurses who do not have children (p = 0.000) and nurses who do not take care of their parents (p = 0.000) have a statistically significantly higher total WAIQ score. Most nurses (61.1%) had considered changing jobs in the last 12 months, and 36.9% had considered leaving the nursing profession. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the total BQNWL and the total WAI. The study found no correlation between QWL, WAI and intention to change jobs or leave the profession, which was unexpected. Conclusions: To ensure the provision of necessary nursing care and a healthy working environment for nurses, it is necessary to regularly monitor QWL and WAI and take measures to ensure the highest quality of working life. Further longitudinal and mixed-methods research is needed to understand the relationship between QWL, WAI and intention to leave. Full article

Background/Objectives: This scoping review critically evaluated existing literature and summarized the impact of occupational, physiological, and psychological stressors on adrenal and neuroendocrine responses, body composition, and physical performance amongst women in tactical occupations. Methods: Boolean searches identified potentially qualifying reports involving: (1) adult women (≥19 y) currently employed or completing their training for a tactical profession; (2) ≥1 marker of “stress”; and (3) ≥1 adrenal, neuroendocrine, body composition, or fitness/performance outcome. Quantitative data (e.g., sample characteristics, outcomes of interest) were extracted and summarized. The completeness of reporting for each study was documented using existing checklists and quantified as: low (<50%), moderate (50–79%), or high (≥80%). Results: 40 studies (k) of moderate reporting quality (~64%) were included in the final sample (3693 women); 11 studies (28%) focused on women exclusively, and 16 studies identified sex differences in ≥1 outcome. Most studies involved military trainee populations (80%, k = 32). Occupation-related stress tended to negatively impact adrenal, neuroendocrine, body composition, and performance outcomes. Conclusions: This review highlights progress in assessing occupational performance in female tactical personnel exposed to diverse stressors; however, our understanding remains incomplete due to methodological and conceptual limitations in the literature. Holistic research strategies are needed to capture the complexity of performance readiness in women, integrating how stress affects key tactical performance aspects such as muscle physiology, reproductive health, and energy and nutrient balance in realistic operational contexts. Integrating such data is vital for informing policy, improving readiness, and enhancing the health and career longevity of female tactical personnel. Full article

The Emporia State University (ESU) /Kansas Arts Commission (KAC) Arts in Medicine Partnership exemplifies interdisciplinary collaboration and the capacity of art therapy to impact mental health and well-being. Through the partnership, art therapy services were offered to medical agencies across the state of Kansas. Participants included medical patients, families, caregivers, staff, and professionals. The article introduces (1) the profession of art therapy and the subspecialty of medical art therapy, (2) the ESU/KAC Arts in Medicine Partnership, (3) examples of positive psychology-informed arts-based experiences, and (4) a pilot study designed to explore the impact of group art therapy sessions with medical teaching faculty. When Research Evidence and Healthcare Policy Collide: Synergising Results and Policy into BRIGHTLIGHT Guidance to Improve Coordinated Care for Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer

Background/Objectives: BRIGHTLIGHT was the national evaluation of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer services in England. BRIGHTLIGHT results were not available when the most recent healthcare policy (NHSE service specifications for AYA Cancer) for AYA was drafted and therefore did not consider BRIGHTLIGHT findings and recommendations. We describe the co-development and delivery of a Policy Lab to expedite the implementation of the new service specification in the context of BRIGHTLIGHT results, examining the roles of multi-stakeholders to ensure service delivery is optimised to benefit AYA patients. We address the key question, “What is the roadmap for empowering different stakeholders to shape how the AYA service specifications are implemented?”. Methods: A 1-day face-to-face policy lab was facilitated, utilising a unique, user-centric engagement approach by bringing diverse AYA stakeholders together to co-design strategies to translate BRIGHTLIGHT evidence into policy and impact. This was accompanied by an online workshop and prioritisation survey, individual interviews, and an AYA patient workshop. Workshop outputs were analysed thematically and survey data quantitatively. Results: Eighteen professionals and five AYAs attended the face-to-face Policy Lab, 16 surveys were completed, 13 attended the online workshop, three professionals were interviewed, and three AYAs attended the patient workshop. The Policy Lab generated eight national and six local recommendations, which were prioritised into three national priorities: 1. Launching the service specification supported by compelling communication; 2. Harnessing the ideas of young people; and 3. Evaluation of AYA patient outcomes/experiences and establishing a national dashboard of AYA cancer network performance. An animation was created by AYAs to inform local hospitals what matters to them most in the service specification. Conclusions: Policy and research evidence are not always aligned, so when emerging evidence does not support current guidance, further exploration is required. We have shown through multi-stakeholder involvement including young people that it was possible to gain a different interpretation based on current knowledge and context. This additional insight enabled practical recommendations to be identified to support the implementation of the service specification. Full article

Mitigating the Health Impairment Vicious Cycle of Air Traffic Controllers Using Intra-Functional Flexibility: A Mediation-Moderated Model

Air traffic controllers (ATCOs) make a significant contribution to ensuring flight safety, making this profession a highly stressful job globally. Job demands–resources (JDR) theory proposes a health impairment process stemming from job demand (complexity) to mental workload, which causes job stress, resulting in compromised flight safety. This vicious cycle is evident among ATCOs and is recognized as an unsustainable management practice. To curb this process, we propose intra-functional flexibility as a conditional factor. Intra-functional flexibility refers to the flexibility in the reallocation and coordination of resources among team members to help in urgent times. This is a relatively new concept and is yet to be empirically tested in the ATCO context. ATCOs work in a dynamic environment filled with sudden surges of urgent jobs to be handled within short time limits. Intra-functional flexibility allows standby crews to be called to ease these tensions when needed. To ascertain the role of intra-functional flexibility in mitigating health impairment among ATCOs, a questionnaire was administered to 324 ATCOs distributed across Saudi Arabia. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis exhibited two critical findings: First, the study revealed the prevalence of a vicious cycle of health impairment among Saudi ATCOs, whereby job complexity leads to increased mental workload, resulting in elevated levels of job stress. Secondly, the presence of intra-functional flexibility weakened this vicious cycle by mitigating the influence exerted by mental workload on job stress. That is, the mediation-moderated model proposed in this study provides empirical evidence supporting the applicability of intra-functional flexibility in mitigating the dire suffering of ATCOs. Background/Objectives: Pathology is often perceived as a technical medical specialty that lacks direct contact with the patient. However, oncological histopathological diagnosis requires a high degree of moral and emotional responsibility. The objective of this study was to investigate how empathy is manifested toward the “invisible” patient, the emotional impact on pathology staff, and potential repercussions in their personal lives. Method: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative component, using an anonymous 22-item questionnaire among Romanian pathologists and medical personnel working in pathology services. The questionnaire was focused on three research directions: professional empathy in the absence of direct patient contact, the emotional impact of oncologic diagnosis on medical personnel in pathology departments, and the carryover of emotions from professional to personal life. A total of 165 respondents were included in the study (physicians, technicians, registrars). Results: Most of the respondents consider that the absence of the patient’s direct contact does not cancel the empathy, this being felt in a cognitive and more natural way. Over 60% of the respondents see oncologic histopathological diagnosis as an emphatic medical act. Over 80% of the respondents experience a sense of emotional responsibility and 70% consider that professional training does not include adequate emotional support. There is a high interest in empathy and psychological support. The professional activity of a pathologist may influence sleep, dreams, and the perception on their own health status. Diagnosing pediatric or young patients is perceived as particularly emotionally challenging. Collegial support is moderate and discussion about professional stress is rare. Conclusions: Empathy is present and relevant in pathology, despite the absence of direct patient interaction. Oncological diagnostics has a significant emotional impact on pathology department personnel, with the need to acknowledge the emotional dimension of the profession and to integrate psychological support mechanisms into pathology practice. Background: Despite the widespread implementation of childhood vaccination programmes, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains an ongoing occupational risk for healthcare students. In multi-ethnic and international university settings, differences in vaccination programmes and immune responses must be considered. This retrospective study aimed to assess the prevalence of protective levels of anti-HBs among medical students at an international university in Rome, exploring associations with demographic and vaccination-related factors. Methods: Data were collected from routine occupational health surveillance conducted in 2023. Anti-HB titres were measured in 507 students, and information on age, sex, country of birth, age at vaccination, and time since the last dose was analysed. Results: Overall, 55.0% of students had antibody levels of at least 10 mIU/mL, indicating serological protection. Higher seroprotection rates were observed among students vaccinated in the first year of life compared to those vaccinated later. A significant decline in antibody titres was also associated with longer intervals since vaccination. Students born outside Europe tended to show lower levels of protection. Conclusions: These results emphasise the importance of screening future healthcare professionals and continuously monitoring antibody titres to help reduce HBV infections. Full article

Retrieval practice, or the active recall of information from memory, is a highly effective learning strategy that strengthens memory and comprehension. This effect is robust and strongly backed by research in cognitive psychology. The health professions—including medicine, nursing, and dentistry—have widely embraced retrieval practice as a learning and study tool, particularly for course exams and high-stakes licensing exams. This state-of-the-art review examines the historical development, current applications, and future directions for the use of retrieval practice in health professions education. While retrieval-based learning has long been used informally in these fields, its formal recognition as a scientifically supported study method gained momentum in the early 2000s and then saw a surge in both research interest and curricular adoption between 2010 and 2025. This historical review explores the key factors driving this growth, such as its alignment with assessment-driven education and the increasing availability of third-party study resources that rely on retrieval practice as a guiding principle. Despite its proven benefits for learning, however, barriers persist to its adoption by students, including in the health professions. This article discusses strategies for overcoming these challenges and for enhancing retrieval practice integration into health professions curricula. Full article

Background: Burnout syndrome (BS) is an occupational condition resulting from chronic stress, characterized by three dimensions, emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DE), and diminished personal accomplishment (PA), particularly prevalent in caregiving professions such as healthcare. The aim of this study is to analyse the prevalence of BS among Spanish dental implantology specialists, along with the impact of demographic, educational, and professional aspects. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study based on the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines and was open to respondents from May to December 2024. An electronic survey based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI–HSS) was sent to members of the Spanish Society of Implants. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis. Results: A total of 305 participants (20.9%) (31.5% females and 68.5% males) completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of BS was 4.3%; however, 61.0% of the dentists showed signs of suffering from the syndrome. The mean values of EE were “average” (20.3 ± 13.8) and of DE and EE “low” (5.1 ± 5.9, and 32.5 ± 14.5, respectively). The factors significantly associated with suffering from BS were being female and having more than 20 years of experience in dental implant treatments. Conclusions: It is advisable to conduct instructive and awareness-raising initiatives among dental professionals to promote an awareness of their mental health, ultimately aiming at preserving their physical and emotional well-being while delivering optimal care to their patients. Emotion Management as Key to Mental Health? Teachers’ Emotions and Support Systems

In addition to recruiting new staff, retaining qualified teachers and supporting their mental well-being are becoming key priorities in German schools. One crucial factor associated with well-being is the use of emotion management. Given the emotional demands of the teaching profession, this study examines teachers’ strategies to manage their work-related emotions and the role of school-based support in maintaining mental health. The analysis is based on interviews with 51 primary and secondary school teachers in Germany, using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke. The results indicated that teachers employed various strategies to manage their emotions. In classroom settings, suppression—a response-focused strategy—was frequently used. Outside the classroom, teachers tended to seek emotional relief through attentional shifts and conversations with colleagues or family, which offer reassurance, cognitive reframing, and emotional release. The findings underscore the importance of a supportive school culture characterized by collegial exchange, supervision, counseling, and committed leadership. Such environments can reduce emotional strain and contribute significantly to teachers’ well-being. Implementing opportunities for consultation and collegial case discussion during working hours may represent a valuable investment in teacher retention, particularly in times of teacher shortages. Violence in the Workplace Towards Pharmacists Working in Different Settings in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Workplace violence (WPV) is a prevailing global concern among healthcare providers (HCPs). Pharmacists may be more vulnerable to WPV than other HCPs due to being the most trusted, approachable, and accessible healthcare workers. However, in Saudi Arabia, there is little research on violence in the workplace among pharmacists working in different sectors. This is a cross-sectional survey study. An online survey was adopted from previous studies and distributed to a convenience sample of pharmacists by email and social media using a link to a web-based survey platform in QuestionPro. SPSS 28 was used for analysis. Logistic regression was employed to assess the association between WPV exposure and the participants’ characteristics. Three hundred and nineteen pharmacists participated in the study. A total of 156 (48.9%) reported exposure to workplace violence. Most participants had experienced verbal abuse (39.7%). Most offenders were male (84.6%), and aged 21–45 years (66.7%). Common causes included lack of a penalty (13.3%), and absence of reporting systems (11.4%). Seventy-eight percent of participants reported that the violence affected them negatively, leading to hopelessness (19.7%), and decreased work performance and productivity (15.1%). Logistic regression indicated that working as a staff (OR: 3.165; 95% CI 1.118–8.96, p = 0.030), working evening or night shift (OR: 2.4456; 95% CI 1.340–4.503, p = 0.004), and lacking procedure for reporting the violence (OR: 0.412; 95% CI 0.236–0.717, p = 0.002) were more likely to be victim of workplace violence than their counterparts. In Saudi Arabia, the risk of WPV events occurrence among pharmacists is high. The findings can guide the creation of appropriate policies, actions, and safety procedures to prevent and address WPV against pharmacists. Full article
