Objectives: To assess differential exposure and differential vulnerability to frequency of unhealthy food consumption in relation to dental caries among 5-year-old children and 12-year-old adolescents in Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 836 participants, comprising 445 children and 391 adolescents from municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Dental caries experience was assessed using the decayed, missing and filled surfaces index for primary teeth among children (dmfs) and permanent teeth among adolescents (DMFS). Unhealthy food consumption was measured according to the weekly frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed foods and categorized as low, moderate or high. Socioeconomic position was assessed using equivalized per capita household income and parental schooling. Differential exposure was examined by assessing socioeconomic gradients in unhealthy food consumption. Differential vulnerability was assessed using interaction terms between socioeconomic position and unhealthy food consumption in negative binomial regression models. Absolute and relative inequalities were quantified using the Slope Index of Inequality and Relative Index of Inequality. Results: Adolescents from lower-income and lower-education households showed a higher frequency of unhealthy food consumption, whereas this pattern was not clearly observed among children. Socioeconomic inequalities in dental caries were evident in both age groups. However, evidence that socioeconomic position modified the association between frequency of unhealthy food consumption and caries was stronger and more consistent among adolescents. Sensitivity analyses using caries prevalence as a binary outcome supported this pattern. Inequality measures indicated stronger relative socioeconomic gradients among adolescents than among children. Conclusions: Socioeconomic inequalities in dental caries are shaped by unequal exposure to unhealthy food consumption and unequal vulnerability to its effects, particularly during adolescence. Food security has always been the leading priority of national strategic deployment. Given the dual background of the continuous upgrading of dietary structures and the rapid growth of the food delivery industry, takeaway staple food waste has become increasingly prominent. However, a gap remains in the existing literature concerning the diversification behavior of consumers’ staple food in the context of food delivery, while even less discussion involves the driving mechanism of diversified willingness to pay (WTP). Based on 1046 survey data points related to consumption behavior concerning food and beverage takeaway staple food, this paper systematically examined the main influencing factors of consumers’ variety-seeking behavior and their WTP for staple food diversification. The following findings were obtained. There is substantial consumer demand for staple food diversification: over 80% of respondents preferred varied staple options and showed positive WTP. Dietary knowledge exerts a consistently positive and significant influence on both staple food variety-seeking behavior and consumers’ WTP for multigrain rice. An intriguing age-related pattern emerges: older consumers exhibit stronger staple food variety-seeking behavior, yet they are less willing to pay a premium for multigrain rice. In addition, dietary knowledge and frugality awareness positively affect WTP for diversified staple food portions, but personal characteristics appeared to have no significant impacts on WTP for small portions of rice. These findings provide demand-side empirical evidence and policy implications for reducing takeaway staple food waste and consolidating the foundations of food security. Full article

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is one of the fastest-growing chronic diseases worldwide, affecting an estimated 589 million adults in 2024, with projections rising to 853 million by 2050. Dietary modification is a cornerstone of both T2D prevention and management. Among the various dietary approaches, plant-based dietary patterns have gained increasing attention; however, uncertainty remains regarding the optimal dietary composition and the contribution of specific food groups. Methods: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on plant-based dietary patterns and their association with T2D prevention and metabolic control, with a particular focus on legumes, dietary fiber, and red and processed meat. Evidence from prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and meta-analyses was evaluated. Results: Higher adherence to healthy plant-based dietary patterns was consistently associated with up to a 30% lower risk of developing T2D, improved insulin sensitivity, and approximately a 0.30–0.47 percentage-point reduction in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Greater consumption of legumes and dietary fiber was linked to improved glycemic control, enhanced but heterogeneous modulation of gut microbiota composition, reduced low-grade inflammation, and beneficial effects on body weight and lipid metabolism. In contrast, higher intake of processed meat and unprocessed red meat was consistently associated with an increased risk of T2D. Importantly, unhealthy plant-based diets characterized by refined grains, sugar-sweetened beverages, and highly processed foods provided little metabolic benefit and may even increase diabetes risk by up to 13%. The interpretation of the available evidence is limited by the predominance of observational studies, heterogeneous definitions of plant-based dietary patterns, self-reported dietary assessments, and the limited availability of long-term randomized controlled trials. Conclusions: Current evidence supports healthy plant-based dietary patterns as an effective strategy for the prevention and management of T2D. Dietary patterns emphasizing whole plant foods, including legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, while limiting processed and excessive red meat intake, are associated with improved metabolic health. Future high-quality randomized controlled trials with standardized dietary definitions are needed to further define the optimal composition of plant-based diets for diabetes prevention and treatment. Background/Objectives: The oral microbiome plays a central role in maintaining oral health from early life, with childhood representing a critical period for its establishment and long-term stability. While many environmental factors influence this dynamic microbial ecosystem, diet is distinct in being both universal and highly modifiable. This systematic review aims to evaluate and synthesize current evidence regarding the impact and mechanisms of distinct dietary habits, food matrices, and nutritional components on the composition, diversity, and ecological resilience of the pediatric oral microbiome. Methods: A literature review aligned with PRISMA guidelines was conducted via digital searches on PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane databases (January 2015–December 2025). Search strategies combined MeSH terms and keywords targeting “Microbiota”, “Mouth”, “Child”, “Diet”, and “Oral health”. Results: From 1068 records identified, 16 relevant articles met the inclusion criteria. Dietary habits may influence taxonomic and functional profiles. Frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, sucrose-rich sodas, and sweet treats induces notable dysbiosis and enriches acidogenic/aciduric taxa. Conversely, protective food matrices, including probiotic-fortified dairy products, polyol-based sugar-free chewing gums (xylitol and maltitol), bovine milk, and bioactive-rich agents like green tea, actively suppress cariogenic pathways (specifically Streptococcus mutans) and support commensal, health-associated genera without disrupting overall microbial structures. Conclusions: Diet represents an important modifiable factor shaping the pediatric oral microbiome, capable of either driving dysbiosis or reinforcing symbiosis. Cultivating a microbiome-informed dietary approach early in childhood supports a resilient microbial architecture, offering a non-invasive, public health framework for long-term oral and systemic disease prevention. Background/Objectives: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are linked to cardiometabolic disease, but cross-sectional surveys often underestimate or invert these associations due to age structure, diagnosis-related dietary changes, and reporting bias. This study explores the potential influence of these biases and examines cross-sectional associations between dietary proxies and prevalent cardiometabolic conditions using the most recent national data from Spain. Methods: We analyzed the 2023 Spanish Health Survey (n = 21,032). Body Mass Index (BMI) was derived from self-reported weight and height. Hypertension and diabetes were defined as self-reported medical diagnoses. Dietary items were mapped as UPF-rich proxies, processed-meat exposure, protective dietary markers, and beverage comparators. Weighted logistic models were adjusted for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Bias-probing analyses included stratification by self-rated health, exclusion of severe chronic comorbidities (n = 4107), and model-based beverage contrasts. Results: Prevalence reached 53.6% for excess weight, 23.9% for prevalent hypertension, and 7.4% for prevalent diabetes. Weekly fast-food consumption was consistently associated with excess weight (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.07–1.35), obesity (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.09–1.50), prevalent hypertension (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.02–1.37), and prevalent diabetes (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.10–1.61). Excluding participants with severe chronic comorbidities strengthened the fast-food association with prevalent diabetes (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.17–1.81). Conclusions: Fast food emerged as the most consistent adverse dietary marker co-occurring across all prevalent outcomes, whereas processed meat was specifically associated with prevalent excess weight and obesity rather than prevalent cardiometabolic diagnoses. Stratified and sensitivity analyses provided empirical patterns consistent with age confounding and possible post-diagnosis dietary changes influencing cross-sectional associations, highlighting the need for cautious interpretation in public health surveillance. Obesity is currently recognized as a global epidemic and contributes to numerous health complications. It is strongly associated with poor dietary habits, including the widespread availability and consumption of high-calorie foods. We conducted a narrative review of publications from major biomedical databases addressing obesity treatment and public-health interventions. One of the strategies for managing obesity is lifestyle modification—balanced diet and regular physical activity—supported by pharmacological and psychological treatment, and, in selected patients, metabolic and bariatric surgery. Beyond patient-level care, public-health-oriented measures should be considered, including taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages, restriction on advertising of unhealthy foods, regulation of the school food environment, front-of-pack nutrition labelling, mandatory food reformulation, subsidies and incentives for healthy foods, urban-planning policies that promote physical activity, and policies that expand access to bariatric surgery. A comprehensive approach integrating clinical care with public-health policy is likely to yield more effective outcomes than either alone. Full article

Background/Objectives: Few prospective studies have investigated the association between carbonated soft drink (CSD) consumption and psychological distress (PD) among adults. The current study aimed to examine this association according to the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and to conduct comparable analyses for coffee and green tea consumption. Methods: Cross-sectional data (n = 6244) and 6-year prospective data (n = 1984) comprising participants aged 43–74 years were analyzed. PD was defined as a Psychosocial Wellbeing Index (PWI) score ≥ 27. Beverage consumption was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Modified Poisson regression was employed to estimate multivariable prevalence ratios or risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for PD. Results: In cross-sectional data, green tea consumption was inversely associated with PD prevalence in the overall study population (p for trend < 0.05), and its dose–response relationship was observed exclusively among BDNF Met allele (CT and TT) carriers. In 6-year prospective data, CSD consumption was positively associated with PD risk among BDNF Met allele carriers only (p for trend < 0.01); multivariable RR (95% CI) for PD among BDNF Met allele carriers was 1.94 (1.21, 3.10)—(95% CI: 1.09, 3.44) after further applying the Bonferroni correction—for those who consumed ≥ 1 cup/week compared with non-consumers. No prospective association was observed for coffee and green tea consumption in the overall study population and genotype-specific analyses. Conclusions: CSD consumption was associated with increased PD risk among individuals carrying the BDNF Met allele, which is known to be associated with various stress-related psychological conditions. These findings suggest that CSD consumption may be particularly harmful to individuals with specific genetic factors. Full article

Plastic packaging is indispensable in modern food and beverage supply chains. However, its production and end-of-life management require substantial primary energy inputs. Improving the energy efficiency of packaging systems is therefore a key objective of circular economy strategies. This study applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the cumulative energy demand (CED) of a beverage packaging system comprising polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) caps, and polypropylene (PP) labels under two end-of-life scenarios: recycling and landfilling. The assessment was performed using Polish production and waste-management conditions (2022–2024). A functional unit of 100,000 complete 1 L beverage packages was adopted, and the life cycle inventory combined primary industrial data with background datasets from the ecoinvent database. Recycling scenarios were modelled using a substitution-based allocation (system expansion) approach. The results indicate that non-renewable energy accounted for approximately 88–97% of the total cumulative energy demand of the analysed packaging components. Among the investigated materials, PP labels exhibited the highest component-specific cumulative energy demand, whereas rPET bottles showed the lowest values, corresponding to an approximately 13% lower energy demand than conventional PET bottles under the adopted modelling assumptions. Recycling consistently outperformed landfilling by reducing cumulative primary energy demand across all analysed impact categories, with the greatest energy-saving potential observed for PP labels. Negative CED values obtained for selected recycling scenarios represent avoided primary energy resulting from virgin material substitution rather than physically negative energy consumption. The findings demonstrate that component-level LCA provides a robust basis for identifying energy hotspots within plastic packaging systems and supports evidence-based decisions regarding eco-design, material selection, and recycling strategies. Although the absolute CED values are specific to Polish production and recycling conditions, the overall results confirm that material recycling is a more energy-efficient end-of-life strategy than landfilling and contributes to the development of more sustainable circular packaging systems. Background/Objectives: There is continuing debate regarding the association between added sugars (AS) consumption and overall diet quality, which remains a research gap within the Canadian population. This study aimed to assess the association between intakes of added sugars and the Healthy Eating Food Index (HEFI) 2019 that measures adherence to Canada’s Food Guide as an indicator of diet quality. Methods: The first 24 h dietary recalls of Canadians 2 years and older (n = 19,532) from the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey—Nutrition were used. Added sugars intakes were calculated based on a systematic 10-step algorithm. Descriptive statistics were obtained for total HEFI and component scores across different AS intake categories. The association between AS categories and HEFI scores was tested using a generalized linear model adjusted for age, sex, education level, type of smoker, and misreporting status. Results: The association between continuous AS intake and HEFI scores was non-linear. In the categorical model, AS intake categories were inversely associated with HEFI scores among Canadians (R2 = 0.32, p < 0.001). Large overlaps in HEFI scores were observed among individuals with similar AS intakes for the whole population and each age group. Among high AS consumers (>15% EI), lower HEFI scores were largely due to higher proportions of sweetened beverages (i.e., low beverage scores) and lower intakes of vegetables and fruit and plant-based proteins. Scores for protein food and whole grains were low across all AS intake categories. Conclusions: Large variations in overall HEFI scores were observed amongst those with similar AS intakes, suggesting that added sugars alone may not fully capture overall diet quality or adherence to Canada’s Food Guide. Background. A substantial body of scientific evidence indicates a close association between dietary habits, body composition, and athletic performance. Nevertheless, dietary inadequacies remain prevalent among athletes, including adolescents. The present study aimed to assess the body composition and dietary habits of participants in the Junior National Swimming Championships. Methods. The study included 39 female competitors (17.8 ± 0.2 years) and 88 male competitors (17.7 ± 0.4 years), all of whom provided informed consent to participate. Dietary habits were evaluated using a questionnaire developed in accordance with the principles of the Swiss Food Pyramid. Additionally, participants provided information regarding their training workload, including the number of weekly training sessions and the total distance swum during training. Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (Tanita BC-418 MA). Results. Male swimmers exhibited significantly different values across all body composition variables compared with female swimmers (p < 0.05), whereas no significant differences were observed in training workload between the groups. Regardless of sex, the majority of participants reported consuming at least three meals per day, as well as the recommended amounts of dairy products and fruit. In contrast, fish consumption was below the recommended level. Female swimmers consumed sweet snacks and fast food significantly less frequently than their male counterparts (p < 0.05), whereas male swimmers reported a higher frequency of pork product and sugar-sweetened carbonated beverage consumption (p < 0.05). Conclusions. Young competitive swimmers exhibit several nutritional inadequacies. Although their consumption of fruit and vegetables generally aligns with current dietary recommendations, fish intake remains insufficient. Female swimmers demonstrated more favourable dietary patterns than male swimmers. Accordingly, ongoing nutrition education should constitute an integral component of the athletic training process. In sports nutrition, this issue may be particularly important because athletes often have high food and fluid consumption, frequent use of packaged sports nutrition products, dietary supplements, bottled beverages, and sport-specific hydration strategies. This narrative review, supported by a structured literature search, examines dietary MP exposure and its potential relevance to gastrointestinal function, gut microbiota, oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial activity, endocrine regulation, metabolism, recovery, adaptation, and performance-related outcomes in athletes. Current evidence suggests that MPs and nanoplastics may interact with biological systems through mechanisms involving intestinal barrier disruption, microbiota alterations, inflammatory activation, oxidative damage, mitochondrial perturbation, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and metabolic dysregulation. However, most available data derive from in vitro studies, animal models, food contamination analyses, exposure-estimation studies, and indirect human biomonitoring evidence. Direct studies in athletic populations are currently lacking. Therefore, the possible implications of MP exposure on recovery, adaptation, and exercise performance should be interpreted as biologically plausible but unproven. From a practical perspective, evidence-informed strategies may include reducing avoidable plastic-related exposure while maintaining adequate hydration, energy availability, nutrient timing, supplement quality, and dietary patterns that support antioxidant defenses, inflammatory balance, gut health, and physiological resilience. Future research should prioritize standardized exposure assessment, validated biomarkers, human biomonitoring, and sport-specific studies evaluating MP exposure in relation to physiological and performance-related outcomes. Background/Objectives: Police is an occupational group characterised by high and variable physical demands, shift work, and the need for sustained operational readiness. Despite the importance of maintaining good health in uniformed services, relatively little is known about dietary habits and nutritional status among police populations, particularly in Poland. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterise dietary habits and nutritional status among Polish police officers participating in the National Health Programme. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 262 Polish police officers (216 men and 46 women) aged 19–64 years. A 61-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary behaviours and bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess body composition. Results: Suboptimal food consumption frequency patterns were observed for several food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy products, nuts, and seeds. Female police officers reported more frequent consumption of fruits, vegetables, and grains, and less frequent consumption of processed meats, animal fats, sugar-sweetened beverages, energy drinks, beer, and spirits than male officers. Normal body weight according to BMI criteria was observed in 33% of participants, whereas only 16% of participants had normal fat mass index values. Excessive body weight was observed in 67% of participants, and excess fat in 82% of participants. Conclusions: The study provides a comprehensive characterisation of dietary habits and nutritional status among Polish police officers within the National Health Programme. These findings suggest the need for nutritional education, health promotion activities, and continued monitoring of dietary habits and nutritional status in this occupational group. Full article

Background/Objectives: College life shapes the dietary habits and food preferences of young adults by exposure to new foods and independence in dietary choices. This study described and compared self-reported food intakes and perceived dietary changes among International (34%), Multicultural (28%), and non-Hispanic White (38%) students at a Midwest United States university (n = 823; aged 18–34 years; 56% women). Importantly, the analysis extended to distinctions among multiple ethnic subcultures by nativity in the same setting. Methods: Students completed an online survey comprising a dietary fat food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), an acculturation scale, and reported intake patterns for alcohol, caffeinated beverages, four nutrient-rich food groups, and perceptions of cultural foods access and diet change. Results: International student diets had lower percentages of calories from fat (p = 0.006) and they reported less consumption of red meats and hyperpalatable foods compared to US non-Hispanic White and Multicultural students (both p < 0.001). Yet, International students showed the largest increases in intakes of these foods (p < 0.001). Alcohol consumption rose most sharply among US non-Hispanic White students. Multicultural ethnic subgroups had few significant differences. The Asian Indian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern International students showed strong differences in dietary patterns. Acculturation scales were not consistent predictors of food intake for International students. Middle Eastern and East Asian subgroups had the lowest dominant society immersion scores compared to other International students. Conclusions: These findings support the need for disaggregated data by cultural subgroups beyond the ‘international’ classification. Cultural affinity and acculturation have nuanced effects on perceived dietary shifts, underscoring the need for targeted nutrition support for all college students, especially vulnerable International students with limited cultural food access. Background: Myopia has become a major public health issue for the ocular health of children and adolescents worldwide and has been found to be associated with dietary factors, including the consumption of beverages. However, current research lacks detailed classification and longitudinal analysis of the relationship between different types of commercial non-alcoholic beverages and children’s visual function and related measurements. Methods: From 2021 to 2024, we conducted a four-year cohort study in Shanghai, China, aiming to explore the association between consumption of various commercial non-alcoholic beverages, including sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), non-sugar-sweetened beverages (NSSBs), and fruit and vegetable beverages, and the vision of children and adolescents. Participants were surveyed once a year, including the collection of beverage consumption frequency using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), as well as ophthalmological examinations covering binocular uncorrected visual acuity, refraction, and axial length (AL). A total of 5199 participants with complete data were included in the study. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) were used to analyze the longitudinal associations between the frequency of consumption of various beverages and myopia as well as vision-related measurements. Results: Among the 5199 participants included in the study, 37.9% were defined as myopic at baseline, with this proportion rising to 65.6% by the end of the study in 2024. Participants with myopia typically had lower consumption frequencies of 100% and non-100% fruit and vegetable juices and higher consumption frequencies of carbonated beverages and milk tea beverages. Increased consumption of 100% and non-100% fruit and vegetable juices was associated with reduced odds of myopia, increased spherical equivalent (SE), and decreased AL in children. In contrast, increased consumption of carbonated beverages, milk tea beverages, and NSSBs was associated with higher odds of myopia, reduced SE, and increased AL in children. Conclusions: Different types of commercial non-alcoholic beverages have varying effects on the vision of children and adolescents. Consumption of carbonated beverages, milk tea beverages, and NSSBs is associated with myopia and AL growth in children, whereas drinking fruit and vegetable juice has been found to be associated with slower myopia progression. Color is a critical sensory attribute of foods that strongly influences consumer perception, acceptance, and purchasing decisions. As health-oriented consumption increases, natural pigments are progressively replacing synthetic colorants. Red algal phycobiliproteins (PBPs) have gained attention in related industries for their vivid water-soluble colors and potential health-promoting properties. Phycoerythrin (PE), phycocyanin (PC), and allophycocyanin (APC) are key pigment proteins responsible for their characteristic coloration. However, variations in algal species, season, and cultivation environments make PBP composition, yield, and quality difficult to standardize. This review summarizes red algal PBPs, covering algal sources, extraction and purification, physicochemical properties, biological functions, regulatory frameworks, and future directions. Major red seaweed sources, PBP types, and extraction strategies are compared, with cyanobacterial PBP studies incorporated where direct red algal evidence is limited. Evidence suggests that red algal PBPs are promising for clean-label, water-based, and mildly processed foods, including beverages, dairy products, confectionery, and meat alternatives, but their application is constrained by sensitivity to heat, light, oxygen, and pH. Beyond coloration, PBPs exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and metabolic health-promoting activities. Overall, red algal PBPs have considerable potential as dual-function ingredients, although commercialization requires advances in raw material standardization, stability-enhancement strategies, process optimization, clinical validation, and regulatory harmonization.
