Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) is a common generalist predator in agroecosystems, frequently used for the control of soft-bodied pests in augmentative releases. Better knowledge of its interactions with secondary natural prey is necessary to optimize field biocontrol performance. This work evaluates the eggs and early larvae of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) and Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) as natural prey for the third larval instar of C. carnea, and the predator preferences for different prey stages under varying conditions, assessing the impact on its life cycle and reproduction, in comparison with commercial diets based on Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs. Prey choice results were uniform for each dual prey combination irrespective of previous predator conditions (larvae number or fasting). Chrysoperla carnea did not show preference for Ephestia or Spodoptera eggs, but preferred eggs prior to larvae of the natural prey. Diets based on the frozen eggs of natural and factitious prey species showed similar effects on the development and reproduction of predator, but when C. carnea fed on S. exigua larvae, several negative effects were assessed, such as longer preimaginal development, lower adult emergence, and a reduced fecundity. These results are helpful for improving the use of lacewings as biocontrol agents in pest control programs. Full article

The present study aimed to assess the lifecycle completion and reproductive improvement of green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens), larval instars in a prey shift routine while alternatively feeding on motiles of two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (natural prey), and the eggs of almond moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) (factitious prey). The results showed that C. carnea larvae successfully completed their lifecycle and life span in the treatments where either the 2nd (T2) or 3rd (T3) instar larvae were fed with the eggs of E. cautella while other instars were provided with motiles of T. urticae, i.e., 1st–3rd and 1st–2nd, respectively. The predator larvae failed to transform from pupae to adults when only the 1st instar larvae were fed on the E. cautella eggs (T1). Similar results were found when all predator instars were reared on the motiles of T. urticae (T4). The shortest mean total larval duration and preoviposition period, the highest fecundity and fertility, and balanced sex ratio were recorded when 3rd instar larvae were fed only on E. cautella eggs (T3). The longest adult longevity and oviposition period were recorded when only the 2nd instar larvae were fed on E. cautella eggs (T2). The findings of the present study would be helpful in developing a self-sustained mite biological control strategy using C. carnea and provide a roadmap for future studies to elucidate the larval release efficiency of C. carnea with the supplementary diet for the management of greenhouse mite pests. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different compositions of poultry-based artificial diets on the biological and morphometric parameters of the almond moth, Ephestia cautella. Three artificial diets (ADs) were prepared, where the complete diet (AD1) consisted of a bird diet, poultry feed, brown wheat flour, glycerin, and brewer’s yeast. The other two tested diets were poultry-feed-deficient (AD2) and brewer’s yeast-deficient (AD3—control). The tested parameters were differences in the length and weight of eggs, larvae, and pupae, larval developmental duration, adult reproductive period, fecundity, and fertility. The results showed significant differences in larval developmental period, female longevity, life span, reproductive parameters, and morphometric measurements among the tested diets. The life span was distinctly longer (40.38 ± 0.81 days) when the larvae were reared on a poultry feed-deficient diet (AD2), while a shorter lifespan (29.93 ± 0.33 and 32.17 ± 0.61 days) was recorded when larvae were reared on a complete diet (AD1) and brewer’s yeast-deficient diet (AD3), respectively. The complete diet (AD1), composed of bird diet, poultry feed, brown wheat flour, glycerin, and brewer’s yeast with (2:2:2:1:1) ratios, resulted in the shortest larval and pupal duration and average life span, as well as the highest fertility percentage. The highest fecundity (eggs/female: 366.77 ± 9.61) was recorded on AD3, while fertility reached almost 100% on AD1. The sex ratio was recorded as equal for both diets AD1 and AD3, while a male-biased sex ratio was recorded for AD2. Similarly, the morphometric data showed increased weight and sizes of eggs, larvae, and pupae when provided with complete (AD1) and brewer’s yeast-deficient diets (AD3). The results signified the importance of poultry feed and brewer’s yeast in AD1 for the mass rearing of E. cautella. Full article

The eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella, are frequently utilized as alternative diets and have demonstrated promising outcomes when consumed by various insects. Nonetheless, the specific reasons for their effectiveness remain unclear. In our study, we assessed the developmental performance of the ladybird Propylea japonica when fed E. kuehniella eggs, alongside 12 factitious prey or artificial diets. Our findings revealed that ladybirds fed E. kuehniella eggs displayed a performance comparable to those fed the natural prey Megoura crassicauda. Transcriptome profiling of larvae raised on E. kuehniella eggs and M. crassicauda revealed that genes upregulated in the former group were enriched in metabolic pathways associated with carbohydrates, lipids, and other essential nutrients. This suggests that E. kuehniella eggs may have a higher nutrient content compared to natural prey. Furthermore, a notable downregulation in the expression of immune effector genes, such as Attacin and Coleoptericin, was observed, which might be attributed to the lower microbial content in E. kuehniella eggs compared to M. crassicauda. We suggest that the difference between E. kuehniella eggs and M. crassicauda as food sources for P. japonica lies in their nutrient and microbial contents. These findings provide valuable insights for the advancement of innovative artificial breeding systems for natural enemies. Full article

The discovery of new and improved factitious and artificial diets is necessary for cost-effective rearing of predatory arthropods. This study evaluated Hermetia illucens black soldier fly (BSF) as a suitable alternative food source for rearing the predatory coccinellid Coleomegilla maculata (Cmac). The hypothesis that BSF larval powder was suitable food to support the growth, development, and reproduction of Cmac was tested in the laboratory. When compared to a standard in-house diet containing brine shrimp egg powder plus Chlorella vulgaris green algae and myristic acid (BSE+CM), the BSF and BSF+CM diets reduced immature growth and development. Immatures successfully reared to teneral adults were smaller when fed BSF or BSF+CM rather than BSE+CM. Combining BSF with a powdered artificial diet (AD), i.e., BSF+AD, did not improve predator growth or development, compared to Cmac reared on BSE+CM. Cmac oviposition responses, i.e., egg clutch production, to BSF vs. BSE+CM or BSF+AD vs. BSE+CM did not differ significantly. In conclusion, BSF has the potential to be food that supports Cmac oviposition behavior. Future research is necessary to discover an ideal mixture of BSF, BSE+CM, or AD that supports Cmac growth, development, and reproduction over multiple generations. Full article

Tuta absoluta is a major pest attacking tomato crops. This invasive species emerged in Europe (Spain) in 2006, and 3 years later it spread to Portugal. In 2009/2010, it was recorded for the first time in the Azores archipelago. Macrolophus pygmaeus is a predator widely used as biological control agent against the tomato leaf miner. This study contrasted the life-history traits and population growth parameters of two feral populations of M. pygmaeus, one from Portugal mainland and one from the Azores archipelago. The predators were tested on single prey diet, either of Ephestia kuehniella eggs, a factitious prey used for mass rearing of mirids, or T. absoluta eggs. We predicted that populations would express differences in its phenotypic characteristics, with the Azorean population displaying low performance due to likely low genetic diversity, as expected for insular populations. Our results revealed the inexistence of phenotypic differences in several life history traits, such as immature developmental time, female longevity, males’ body weight and sex ratio. Contrary to our predictions, traits with direct impact on fitness, such as lifetime fertility (95.78 ± 14.23 vs. 61.38 ± 13.52 nymphs), explain better performances for the population of the Azores. Azorean M. pygmaeus females were larger, matured earlier and reproduced at a higher rate for longer periods, than mainland females. Therefore, population growth parameters show a positive advantage for the population of the Azores, fed on T. absoluta (time required for doubling the population Azores, Ek: 8.42 ± 0.50, Ta: 5.76 ± 0.31 and mainland, Ek: 10.88 ± 1.94, Ta: 12.07 ± 3.15). Biological performance of M. pygmaeus was similar when fed with T. absoluta or E. kuehniella that could be beneficial both to optimize mass production of the predator and biological control of the pest. Our results are discussed as well in a fundamental perspective, seeking if differences in biological performance can be explained by lower genetic diversity driven by geographic isolation. Orius laevigatus is a key tool for the success of augmentative biological control programs in protected crops. This biological control agent is mass-reared feeding on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella. However, this factitious prey is expensive, accounting for a significant percentage of the rearing costs. Therefore, there is a need to optimize the amount of Ephestia eggs needed per individual leading to a cost reduction, which in turn will favor biological control adoption. This study investigated the effect of the amount of Ephestia eggs provided on the developmental and reproductive fitness of O. laevigatus. At least a daily supply of 1 and 3 Ephestia eggs was needed for optimal development of the first two nymphal instars, respectively, although for maximum survival, 1 egg was enough for both instars. For subsequent development until adulthood, a minimum of 8 eggs per day were needed to fully support growth, but only 3 eggs for optimal survival. Similarly, male body size was also maximized by feeding 8 eggs, but for maximum female body size 10 eggs per day were required. Oviposition rate of females increased with the daily number of Ephestia eggs provided, until a plateau was reached at 8 eggs/day. Benefits and savings for industrial production of O. laevigatus are discussed. Full article

Natural predators such as Nesidiocoris tenuis are known for their role in managing greenhouse pests. However, techniques in maximizing the biological control potential of N. tenuis under field conditions are still lacking. We evaluated under greenhouse conditions the prospects of Artemia cysts enhanced with high fructose corn syrup and honey, and delivered using hemp strings (hemp rope) as supplementary factitious dietary in augmenting the proliferation and spread of N. tenuis on tomato plants. Results showed that N. tenuis supplemented with hemp rope could establish, proliferate and disperse among tomato plants compared to the N. tenuis supplemented with banker plants. Even though N. tenuis proliferated exponentially on banker plants, their movement and relocation to tomato plants, as expected, were only congested on tomato plants near the banker plants. However, as the survey continued, they relocated to the rest of the tomato plants. Furthermore, the number of Bemisia tabaci eggs and nymphs, a serious greenhouse pest of tomato, was observed to be significantly reduced in hemp rope greenhouse compared to banker plants and the negative control (no pest control system) greenhouses. This study, therefore, establishes foundational data on the usage of Artemia cysts enhanced with isomerized sugar (high fructose corn syrup) and honey under greenhouse conditions as factitious supplementary dietary in supporting N. tenuis establishment and spread, traits that are essential towards development of whitefly Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system. enhanced with isomerized sugar (high fructose corn syrup) and honey. Integrated Pest Management strategies are widely implemented in sweet peppers. Aphid biological control on sweet pepers includes curative applications of parasitoids and generalist predators, but with limited efficiency. Macrolophus pygmaeus is a zoophytophagous predator which has been reported to predate on aphids, but has traditionally been used to control other pests, including whiteflies. In this work, we evaluate the effectiveness of M. pygmaeus in controlling Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae) by testing different combinations of aphid and predator densities in cage-experiments under greenhouse conditions. The impact of the presence of an alternative factitious prey (E. kuehniella eggs) was also investigated. Macrolophus pygmaeus, at densities of four individuals/plant, caused rapid decline of newly established aphid populations. When aphid infestations were heavy, the mirid bug reduced the aphid numbers but did not fully eradicate aphid populations. The availability of a factitious prey did not influence M. pygmaeus predation on aphids. Based on our data, preventive application of M. pygmaeus, along with a supplementary food source , is recommended to control early infestations of aphids. Full article
