The analysis of complex and time-evolving interactions, such as those within social dynamics, represents a current challenge in the science of complex systems. Temporal networks stand as a suitable tool for schematizing such systems, encoding all the interactions appearing between pairs of individuals in discrete time. Over the years, network science has developed many measures to analyze and compare temporal networks. Some of them imply a decomposition of the network into small pieces of interactions; i.e., only involving a few nodes for a short time range. Along this line, a possible way to decompose a network is to assume an egocentric perspective; i.e., to consider for each node the time evolution of its neighborhood. This was proposed by Longa et al. by defining the “egocentric temporal neighborhood”, which has proven to be a useful tool for characterizing temporal networks relative to social interactions. However, this definition neglects group interactions (quite common in social domains), as they are always decomposed into pairwise connections. A more general framework that also allows considering larger interactions is represented by higher-order networks. Here, we generalize the description of social interactions to hypergraphs. Consequently, we generalize their decomposition into “hyper egocentric temporal neighborhoods”. This enables the analysis of social interactions, facilitating comparisons between different datasets or nodes within a dataset, while considering the intrinsic complexity presented by higher-order interactions. Even if we limit the order of interactions to the second order (triplets of nodes), our results reveal the importance of a higher-order representation.In fact, our analyses show that second-order structures are responsible for the majority of the variability at all scales: between datasets, amongst nodes, and over time. Various therapeutic approaches have been developed for neglect. Many studies have demonstrated the effect of digital therapeutics (DTx) on neglect. However, few studies have reported the effects of DTx on egocentric and allocentric neglect. The differentiation of types of neglect and separate interventions is crucial in the rehabilitation process. In this article, seven studies on DTx on egocentric and allocentric neglect were reviewed. DTx, which was employed in these studies, could be classified as follows: (1) software adaptation in traditional treatment, (2) VR game using the head-mount display as treatment, and (3) the development of a new digital program like ReMoVES. In addition, more studies and more effective results were reported for egocentric neglect than for allocentric neglect. In future studies, each effect on egocentric and allocentric neglect should be identified in detail with the appropriate use of differential evaluation and long-term application of independent DTx. (1) Background: Existing treatment methods for neglect are concentrated on egocentric neglect and may lead to various problems such as cost/space constraints and portability. Therefore, this study seeks to determine how a new treatment (also known as twins therapy, TT) for stroke patients can improve an existing problem associated with neglect. (2) Method: A pre/post-test control group research design was used and both groups continued to receive existing rehabilitation treatment, whilst TT intervention was only added to the experimental group. TT intervention was conducted for a total of 20 sessions (1 session for 30 min/day, 5 days/week, for 4 weeks). (3) Result: There was no significant difference in the manual function test (MFT) and the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) items (p > 0.05) before and after the TT intervention. However, the score and execution time of the apple cancellation test showed a significant reduction only in the experimental group (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusion: TT not only improved egocentric neglect, but also allocentric neglect symptoms in stroke patients. Full article

The application of building information modeling (BIM) disrupts the interaction between individuals and industry organizations from time and spatial dimensions. However, the temporal dimension of interaction is usually a neglected factor in the application of social network analysis (SNA) when studying the project communication networks. Additionally, the social incorporation of BIM enables full collaboration across multiple disciplines and stakeholders, which calls for multi-dimensional research agendas and practice of different network models. To fill the gap, this study aims to develop an integrated framework to guide the analysis of information exchange in construction projects. According to the findings, three network models can be used for network analysis at the industry, project and individual levels. It is worth noting that the majority of recent attention about the project communication networks has been focused on industry and project levels. The network analysis at the individual level is under-researched so we actively explore how to extend the scope of the network analysis from the project and industry level to the individual level. An ego network model was thus proposed to explore the project communication networks at the individual level, where the network indices were derived. The outputs implied that the proposed model has the potential to explore the ego-centric network in the construction projects. Full article

Several studies have shown that spatial information is encoded using two types of reference systems: egocentric (body-based) and/or allocentric (environment-based). However, most studies have been conducted in static situations, neglecting the fact that when we explore the environment, the objects closest to us are also those we encounter first, while those we encounter later are usually those closest to other environmental objects/elements. In this study, participants were shown with two stimuli on a computer screen, each depicting a different geometric object, placed at different distances from them and an external reference (i.e., a bar). The crucial manipulation was that the stimuli were shown sequentially. After participants had memorized the position of both stimuli, they had to indicate which object appeared closest to them (egocentric judgment) or which object appeared closest to the bar (allocentric judgment). The results showed that egocentric judgements were facilitated when the object closest to them was presented first, whereas allocentric judgements were facilitated when the object closest to the bar was presented second. These results show that temporal order has a different effect on egocentric and allocentric frames of reference, presumably rooted in the embodied way in which individuals dynamically explore the environment. Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) causes difficulties in disengaging attention from the right side to unexpected targets on the left. However, the relationship between egocentric spatial position and attentional disengagement remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between trunk position and attentional disengagement. Thirty-eight patients with early stroke onset were classified as follows: USN (n = 18), right brain damage without USN (n = 10), and left brain damage (n = 10). The primary outcome was reaction time (RT) in the modified Posner task (MPT). The MPT comprised a condition in which the preceding cue and target direction were the same (valid condition) and a condition in which the directions were opposite (invalid condition). RT to the target was calculated. The MPT was performed in three different trunk positions (trunk midline, left, and right). In each group, the RT was compared on the basis of the stimulus conditions and trunk position. The RT was delayed in the valid and invalid left conditions, especially in the invalid left condition. The RT of the trunk right condition was significantly reduced compared with that of trunk midline and left conditions in the invalid left condition. Thus, trunk position influences attentional disengagement. This study contributes to the rehabilitation of patients with neglect symptoms. Full article

This article follows the recent ‘affective turn’ in social sciences and migration scholarship by analyzing the role of emotions in the handling of social risks by people with different migration biographies. The study is based on large-scale research with migrant organizations in Germany, which are important, though often neglected, sources of social protection, identity development, and community building. Interviews and egocentric network diagrams with people using services in various organizations demonstrate the impact of emotions on social protection practices. Contrasting these practices among adult movers, the German-born, and the 1.5 generation with different migration biographies, we shed light on the processual, material, and relational nature and the emotional dimensions of dealing with social risks. In doing so, this work aims to engage in discussions on emotions in migration and settlement processes and to increase the understanding of their impact on social protection. Full article

In Education for Sustainable Development, the topic of sustainable nutrition offers an excellent learning topic as it combines the five dimensions of health, environment, economy, society, and culture, unlike most topics with a regional-global scope. The identification of existing students’ conceptions of this topic is important for the development of effective teaching and learning arrangements. This study aimed to understand students’ conceptions of sustainable nutrition and the relevance that students attribute to the five dimensions. For this purpose, we conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 10th-grade students at secondary schools in Germany (n = 46; female = 47.8%; MAge = 15.59, SD = 0.78). We found that the health dimension prevailed in students’ conceptions of sustainable nutrition; however, the more dimensions the students considered, the less importance was attached to the health dimension. The ecological dimension, in turn, became more prominent as the students’ conceptions became more elaborate. Many students neglected the social, economic, and especially the cultural dimensions. Furthermore, alternative conceptions of the terminology of sustainable nutrition, which did not correspond to the scientific concept, were identified. Students had difficulties linking the ecological, social, economic, and cultural dimensions to sustainable nutrition due to a predominant egocentric perspective on nutrition, which primarily entails focusing on one’s own body. Up to now, rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect has focused on egocentric forms of neglect, whereas less is known about the possibility to improve allocentric deficits. The present study aimed to examine the efficacy of prism adaptation (PA) training on patients with different forms of neglect: egocentric, allocentric, or mixed. Twenty-eight patients were assessed with specific neglect tests before (T0) and after (T1) 10 sessions of PA training. Performance in the Apples Cancellation test was used to identify patients with egocentric (n = 6), allocentric (n = 5), or mixed (n = 17) forms of neglect. In the overall group of patients, PA training produced significant improvements in performance across different neglect tests. In terms of the egocentric–allocentric distinction, the training was effective in reducing omissions in the left part of space in the Apples Cancellation test both for patients with egocentric neglect and mixed neglect. By contrast, errors of commissions (marking the inability to detect the left part of the target stimulus, i.e., allocentric neglect) remained unchanged after PA in patients with allocentric neglect and actually increased marginally in patients with mixed neglect. The PA training is effective in improving egocentric neglect, while it is ineffective on the allocentric form of the disturbance. Notably, the allocentric component of neglect is frequently impaired, although this is most often in conjunction with the egocentric impairment, yielding the mixed form of neglect. This stresses the importance of developing exercises tuned to improving allocentric neglect. Full article
