The electronics industry has significantly contributed to the development of efficient heat dissipation systems. One widely used technique is pool boiling, a simple method requiring no moving parts or complex structures. It enables the removal of large amounts of heat at relatively low temperature differences. Enhancing pool boiling performance involves increasing the critical heat flux and the heat transfer coefficient, which defines how effectively a surface can transfer heat to a cooling fluid. This method is commonly applied in cooling electronic devices, digital circuits, and power systems. In this study, pool boiling at atmospheric pressure was investigated using copper surfaces. To validate the Rohsenow model used to estimate the maximum bubble departure diameter, a planimetric approach was applied. Measurements included average contact angle (CA), surface tension (σ), and droplet diameter for four working fluids: deionised water, ethanol, Novec-649, and FC-72. For each fluid, at least 15 measurements of CA and σ were conducted using the Young–Laplace model. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the influence of contact angle and surface tension on nucleate boiling using four different fluids on copper surfaces. The novelty lies in combining high-precision experimental measurements with validation of the Rohsenow model, offering new insights into surface-fluid interactions critical for thermal system performance. Transparent coatings with superwetting properties (superhydrophilicity or superhydrophobicity) have broad application prospects. Usually, most studies have been carried out separately on superhydrophobic coatings or superhydrophilic coatings. In our work, superhydrophilic transparent coatings were prepared by the four-mercapto and four-polyethylene glycol monomethyl acrylate modified POSS (POSS-(SH)4-(PEGMA)4) (designated as I-coating) as well as superhydrophobic transparent coating (designated as O-coating) were prepared with the mercapto and seven-heptyl decafluoroheptyl acrylate modified POSS (POSS-SH-(DFMA)7). The similarities and differences in anti-fogging, stain resistance, self-cleaning and anti-biological application between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic coatings were compared systematically. The results show that superhydrophilic coatings performed better at preventing fog and facilitating self-cleaning; nevertheless, superhydrophobic coatings exhibited superior efficacy in the removal of contaminants such as markers and lipsticks. Both superwetting coatings demonstrated proficiency in self-cleaning and in deterring biological adhesion with respect to low-viscosity oil droplets. The relevant research of this paper provided a reference for the subsequent study on the advantages and disadvantages of superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic as well as its specific application. In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the microphysical structures of Meiyu heavy rainfall (near-surface rainfall intensity > 8 mm/h) across different life stages in the Yangtze-Huaihe River Valley (YHRV). We classified the heavy rainfall events into three life stages of developing, mature, and dissipating using ERA5 reanalysis and IMERG precipitation estimates, and examined vertical microphysical structures using Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite during the Meiyu period from 2014 to 2023. The results showed that convective heavy rainfall during the mature stage exhibits peak radar reflectivity and surface rainfall rates, with the largest near-surface mass weighted diameter (Dm ≈ 1.8 mm) and the smallest droplet concentration (dBNw ≈ 38). Downdrafts in the dissipating stage preferentially remove large ice particles, whereas sustained moisture influx stabilizes droplet concentrations. Stratiform heavy rainfall, characterized by weak updrafts, displays narrower particle size distributions. During dissipation, particle breakups dominate, reducing Dm while increasing dBNw. The analysis of the relationship between microphysical parameters and rainfall rate revealed that convective heavy rainfall shows synchronized growth of Dm and dBNw during the developing stage, with Dm peaking at about 2.1 mm near 70 mm/h before stabilizing in the mature stage, followed by small-particle dominance in the dissipating stage. In contrast, stratiform rainfall exhibits a “small size, high concentration” regime, where the rainfall rate correlates primarily with increasing dBNw. Additionally, convective heavy rainfall demonstrates about 22% higher precipitation efficiency than stratiform systems, while stratiform rainfall shows a 25% efficiency surge during the dissipation stage compared to other stages. The removal of partially hydrogenated fats, as well as the substitution of saturated fats with healthier alternatives, has become increasingly common due to their well-established association with adverse health effects. As a result, the demand for alternative formulations in the food industry has driven the development of a promising emerging technology: oleogels. Oleogels are a semi-solid material made by trapping liquid oil within a three-dimensional network formed by structuring agents. Within this context, this study aimed to develop and characterize margarines prepared with oleogels formulated from extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, starch, and beeswax at varying concentrations. The proposed oleogel-based formulations exhibited a high melting temperature range and lower enthalpy. Although lipid oxidation levels differed between the commercial and oleogel-based margarines, they remained within acceptable limits. A significant difference in color was observed, with the oleogel formulations imparting a slight greenish hue compared to the commercial margarine. In terms of microstructure, the commercial margarine presented smaller and more uniformly distributed water droplets. Oleogel-based margarines demonstrated technological feasibility. Considering consumers’ growing interest in food innovation and health-conscious products, olive oil-based oleogel margarines represent a promising alternative, particularly due to the nutritional benefits associated with olive oil. This study used the Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method to investigate the process of drying in the centrifugal unit of a pelletizing system in polymer processing. The effects of various flight angles (10°, 45°, and 70°) and rotor speeds (1280, 1600, and 1920 rpm) on drying efficiency, polymer pellet transport, polymer pellet accumulation, and power consumption were examined. The results showed that the flight angle significantly influenced drying performance. At 1600 rpm, the 10° flight angle configuration required the least power (10.94 kW) but resulted in inefficient water separation, which led to an increase in water droplets (i.e., higher moisture content) in the upper part of the centrifugal unit and near the outlet. With a 70° flight angle, water removal was most effective, but polymer pellet transport efficiency was lower due to centrifugal forces becoming dominant. A 45° flight angle provided the best balance between drying efficiency and power consumption, requiring 16.42 kW while achieving the most efficient polymer pellet transport. Rotor speed also played a crucial role: lower speeds enhanced water removal and reduced power demand but limited throughput, whereas higher speeds facilitated centrifugal separation at the cost of increased power consumption. The optimal combination of the rotor speed and flight angle was found to be 45° at 1280 rpm, which offered an effective trade-off between drying performance and power efficiency. Full article

This study proposes a simple yet versatile microfluidic strategy for fabricating monodisperse alginate hydrogel microspheres using a symmetric flow-focusing device. The system integrates three key innovations: (1) Cost-effective mold fabrication: A paper-based positive master replaces conventional SU-8 photoresist, significantly simplifying device prototyping. (2) Surfactant-free droplet generation: Alginate hydrogel droplets are formed at the first flow-focusing junction without requiring interfacial stabilizers. (3) In situ solidification with coalescence suppression: Acetic acid-infused corn oil is introduced at the adjacent junction, simultaneously triggering ionic crosslinking of alginate via pH reduction while preventing droplet aggregation. Notably, the hydrogel microspheres can be efficiently harvested through oscillatory aqueous phase separation, removing post-fabrication washing steps (typically 6–8 cycles for surfactant and oil removal). This integrated approach demonstrates exceptional advantages in fabrication simplicity, process scalability, and operational robustness for high-throughput hydrogel microsphere production. A laboratory-scale wire plate wet electrostatic precipitator was designed and constructed to investigate the particle enhancement and capture characteristics of electrostatically charged droplets in continuous atomization mode. A comparison was made between different types of wet electrostatic precipitation mechanisms for particle removal, and the change mechanism of gas ionization mode under the action of charged droplets was analyzed. Experimental investigations were conducted on the effects of electrospray on corona discharge “ionic wind”, as well as the force mechanism, agglomeration effect, and removal stability of particles under the synergistic action of electrostatic atomization and an electric field. The results demonstrated that electrospray mode could enhance the interaction between droplets and particles, promote the coagulation and accumulation of fine particles, increase their diameter to larger sizes that are easier to capture, and achieve high particle collection efficiency with significantly reduced water consumption while maintaining high corona current and particle capture effectiveness. In this study, a preparation method of superhydrophobic composite coating based on a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) substrate is proposed. The micro-scale pit array structure was fabricated via laser etching technology. Utilizing the synergistic effects of epoxy resin (EP), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and fluorinated nanosilica (F-SiO2), we successfully prepared an EP@PDMS@F-SiO2 composite coating. The effects of the contents of EP, PDMS, and F-SiO2 on the surface wettability, mechanical stability, and UV durability were studied by optimizing the coating ratio through orthogonal experiments. The results show that the micro–nano composite structure formed by laser etching can effectively fix the coating particles and provide excellent superhydrophobicity on the surface. The coating retains high hydrophobicity after paper abrasion (1000 cm under a 200 g load), demonstrating the mechanical stability of the armor-like structure, High-content F-SiO2 coatings exhibit greater UV durability. In addition, the coating surface has low droplet adhesion and self-cleaning capabilities for efficient contaminant removal. The research provides theoretical and technical support for the design and engineering application of a non-fluorinated, environmentally friendly superhydrophobic coating. Full article

Considering the implications for the environment and human health, oil-contaminated soil generated in the petroleum industry requires treatment. Chemical cleaning represents an effective treatment approach for oil-contaminated soil and has attracted considerable attention. In this study, sodium d-gluconate (C6H11NaO7), trisodium citrate (C6H5Na3O7), and L-arginine (C6H14N4O2) were employed as detergents to remove oil from oily sludge. The impacts of sludge (solid) concentration (CS), types of detergents, temperature (T), and pH value on the deoiling efficiency (De) were systematically investigated. The results indicated that at a given detergent concentration (CDG) and CS, De followed the order C6H11NaO7 > C6H5Na3O7 > C6H14N4O2. When CS was 3.86 g·L−1 and CDG was 10.0 g·L−1, sodium d-gluconate achieved a maximum De of approximately 85%. Additionally, at a fixed CS, De decreased as the pH value increased, while it increased with increasing temperature. Interestingly, during the deoiling equilibrium, an obvious “solid effect” (or CS−effect) was observed. The “solid effect” refers to the phenomenon where the oil distribution coefficient (KD) changes with an increase in CS. The observed CS effect was described using the surface component activity (SCA) model. The values of the intrinsic distribution coefficient (KD0) and CS−effect constant (γ), which are the model parameters of the SCA model, were derived from three detergent−sludge systems under different temperatures (T) and pH values. The strength of the CS effect (or γ value) was found to be independent of detergent type and increased as T and pH value increased. This study broadens the application range of the SCA model and contributes to a deeper understanding of the adsorption and desorption behavior of oil droplets at the solid−liquid interface. In oil and gas production, reservoir heterogeneity causes plugging removal fluids to preferentially enter high-permeability zones, hindering effective production enhancement in low-permeability reservoirs. Traditional chemical diverting agents exhibit insufficient stability in high-temperature, high-salinity environments, risking secondary damage. To address these challenges, this study developed a water-sensitive self-thickening emulsion, targeting improved high-temperature stability, selective plugging, and easy flowback performance. Formulation optimization was achieved via orthogonal experiments and oil–water ratio adjustment, combined with particle size regulation and viscosity characterization. Core plugging experiments demonstrated the new emulsion system’s applicability and diverting effects. Results showed that under 150 °C and 15 × 104 mg/L NaCl, the emulsion maintained a stable viscosity of above 302.7 mPa·s, with particle size D50 increasing from 31.1 μm to 71.2 μm, exceeding API RP 13A’s 100 mPa·s threshold for acidizing diverters, providing an efficient plugging solution for high-temperature, high-salinity reservoirs. The injection pressure difference in high-permeability cores stabilized at 2.1 MPa, significantly enhancing waterflood sweep efficiency. The self-thickening mechanism, driven by salt-induced droplet coalescence, enables selective plugging in heterogeneous formations, as validated by core flooding tests showing a 40% higher pressure differential in high-permeability zones compared to conventional systems. Ice accumulation poses a significant hazard to aviation safety, particularly in cold weather conditions, as it can compromise aerodynamic performance, increase structural weight, and diminish lift, occasionally resulting in severe stall incidents. At present, such risks are managed through the use of energy-demanding active ice protection systems (IPSs), which operate either by inhibiting ice formation (anti-icing) or by removing existing ice (de-icing). Nonetheless, in the context of future sustainable aviation, there is a pressing need to develop IPSs with lower energy requirements. A promising approach involves hybrid IPSs that integrate conventional active systems with passive superhydrophobic or icephobic surface treatments, which are capable of preventing, delaying, or minimizing ice buildup. These systems offer the potential to substantially decrease the energy consumption and consequently the CO2 emissions. Furthermore, in accordance with FAA regulations, active IPSs are not permitted to operate during takeoff and initial flight stages to prevent any reduction in engine thrust. These two reasons emphasize the critical importance of developing efficient coatings that, on the one hand, promote the mobility of water droplets, hereby preventing ice formation, as achieved by superhydrophobic surfaces, and on the other hand, facilitate ice detachment, as required for icephobic performance. In this context, the primary objective of the present work is to emphasize the icephobic properties of two superhydrophobic coatings. To achieve this, an extensive characterization is first conducted, including wettability, Surface Free Energy (SFE), and surface roughness, to confirm their superhydrophobic nature. This is followed by an assessment of their icephobic performance, specifically in terms of ice adhesion strength, with comparisons made against a commercial aeronautical coating. The results revealed a significant reduction in both the wettability and SFE of the developed coatings compared to the reference, along with a marked decrease in ice adhesion strength, thereby demonstrating their icephobic properties. Future activities will focus on the combination of coatings with active IPS in order to assess the energy efficiency under extensive icing conditions where both superhydrophobic and icephobic properties are required. During crude oil exploration and extraction, the presence of H2S not only poses a threat to operational safety but also accelerates equipment corrosion, highlighting the urgent need for efficient and cost-effective processing solutions. This study employs a coupled numerical simulation approach that integrates computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and population balance models (PBM) to systematically investigate the multiphase flow characteristics within SK static mixers. By embedding mass transfer rates and reaction kinetics equations for hydrogen sulfide and sodium hypochlorite into the Euler-Euler multiphase flow model using user-defined functions (UDFs), the effects of equipment structure on the efficiency of the crude oil desulfurization process are examined. The results indicate that the optimized SK static mixer (with 15 elements, an aspect ratio of 1, and a twist angle of 90°) achieves an H2S removal efficiency of 72.02%, which is 18.84 times greater than that of conventional empty tube reactors. Additionally, the micro-mixing time is reduced to 0.001 s, and the coefficient of variation (CoV) decreases to 0.21, while maintaining acceptable pressure drop levels. Using the CFD-PBM model, the dispersion behavior of droplets within the static mixer is investigated. The results show that the diameter of the inlet pipe significantly affects droplet dispersion; smaller diameters (0.1 and 1 mm) enhance droplet breakup through increased shear force and turbulence effects. The findings of this study provide theoretical support for optimizing crude oil desulfurization processes and are of significant importance for enhancing the economic efficiency and safety of crude oil extraction operations. To enhance the efficiency of flue gas purification from straw combustion, a combined approach using the ammonia method and electrostatic charged spray was investigated. This study investigated the charging characteristics of atomized droplets and their impact on flue gas purification. The results show that the charge-to-mass ratio of droplets increases and then decreases as charging voltages increase. At a constant voltage, the ratio increases with higher ammonia concentrations and shows a gradual increase with higher spray pressures. For flue gases from three common straw combustion sources, the average dust removal rate at 8 kV was 2.5 to 3 times higher than at 0 kV. Under the 8 kV condition with a 10% ammonia solution, the NO removal rate was approximately 4.7 times, and the NO2 removal rate was 2.8 times compared to water alone. Particulate matter, NO, and NO2 removal rates were 61.2%, 88.6%, and 88.1%, respectively, at a spray pressure of 0.5 MPa, 8 kV charging voltage, and 10% ammonia concentration. This study provides an experimental foundation for developing high-efficiency flue gas purification systems for straw combustion. Full article

Liquid atomization has wide applications in jet-type and reciprocating engines, powder generation, cooling towers, and atmosphere dust removal. Droplet size and distribution are the decisive factors in the performance of the above applications. The rapid development and usage of computer science brings huge differences in the research manner of liquid atomization and has shed great light on the micro-phenomena of the formation, deformation, and rupture of liquid ligaments. However, the numerical methods of liquid atomization still lack efficiency due to their huge cost of computer resources and their accuracy due to their dependence on empirical correlations. Before achieving reliable implementation in atomization device design, such computational models must undergo rigorous validation against experimentally measured data acquired through advanced diagnostic techniques. The present paper reviews the mainstream numerical methods of liquid atomization including interface capturing, particle tracking, smoothed particle hydrodynamics, etc. Their respective numerical kernels and some representative simulation cases are summarized. The aim of the present review is to provide a general idea and future research orientation on the capabilities of modern computer and numerical models in calculating atomization and designing relative devices and hopefully guide future research to strive efficiently and productively.
