Understanding the effects of industrial lubricating oil and additives on desulfurization solution foaming is very important to both engineers and academic researchers. In this study, the influences of lubricating oil and its additive components on the foaming performance of desulfurization solution were examined, and the empirical model was established to predict the foam height of desulfurization solution containing contaminants. It is established that the additives of dodecenyl succinic acid and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate have more significant influence on the foaming performance of desulfurization solution than the lubricant base oil. In addition, the effect can be enlarged at lower temperatures. The prediction model of the foaming performance of desulfurization solution was established, and the prediction deviation of the foam height was no more than 7%. The predicted foam height increases with increasing apparent air velocity, solution surface tension, and viscosity, and decreases with increasing solution density and average bubble radius. Additionally, the foam height and defoaming time of the contaminated industrial solution were largely reduced by employing an adsorption purification process using activated carbon as an adsorbent. The present study highlights the quantitative relationship between contaminant contents and foam height, as well as defoaming time. Full article

As a result of strict regulations of phthalate plasticizers, alternative non-phthalate forms are desired and increasingly used. This work presents a synthetic method for alternative plasticizers (dialkyl succinates and adipates) via esterification of succinic and adipic acid with alcohols: butan-1-ol and 2-ethylhexan-1-ol. Ionic liquids were synthesized by the reaction of triethylamine with over-equimolar (1:2.7) amounts of sulfuric(VI) acid, which were used as an acidic catalyst and solvent. The two-phase liquid–liquid system was formed during the reaction due to immiscibility of the esters with the ionic liquid. This phenomenon is a driving force of this process, shifting the equilibrium toward the product formation. As a result, dialkyl succinates and adipates were obtained in high yields (99%) and selectivities (>99%), under mild reaction conditions at 70–80 °C and using a 4:1 molar ratio of alcohol to acid and 15 mol% of catalyst. The catalyst was recycled 10 times without any loss of activity. This alternative method is highly competitive: it involves a simple procedure for product isolation as well as a high yield and purity of the resulting esters. These advantages make this method sustainable and promising for industrial applications. Full article

Two new continuous flow systems for the production of dialkyl succinates were developed via the esterification of succinic acid, and via the trans-esterification of dimethyl succinate. The first microwave-assisted continuous esterification of succinic acid with H2SO4 as a chemical homogeneous catalyst was successfully achieved via a single pass (ca 320 s) at 65–115 °C using a MiniFlow 200ss Sairem Technology. The first continuous trans-esterification of dimethyl succinate with lipase Cal B as an enzymatic catalyst was developed using a Syrris Asia Technology, with an optimal reaction condition of 14 min at 40 °C. Dialkyl succinates were produced with the two technologies, but higher productivity was observed for the microwave-assisted continuous esterification using chemical catalysts. The continuous flow trans-esterification demonstrated a number of advantages, but it resulted in lower yield of the target esters. Full article

Abstract
2-Acetylcyclopentanone undergoes a smooth reaction with triphenylphosphineand dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates to produce dialkyl 2-(1-acetyl-2-oxocyclopentyl)-3-(1,1,1-triphenyl-λ5-phosphanylidene)succinates. These compounds undergo intramolecularWittig reactions in boiling benzene to produce highly strained spirocyclobutenederivatives, which spontaneously undergo ring-opening reactions to produce dialkyl (E)-2-[1-(2-oxocyclopentyliden)ethyl]-2-butenedioates.
