Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an in situ analytical technique. Compared to traditional single-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS), collinear double-pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS) is a promising technique due to its lower limit of detection for trace elements. In this paper, we analyze the spectral and image information obtained from the emissions emitted by single/double pulse (SP/DP) laser-induced plasmas. The types of laser-supported absorption (LSA) waves of the plasmas were determined according to the interactions among the ablation vapor, the ambient gas, and the laser. Furthermore, the influence mechanisms of plasma shielding on DP-LIBS signal intensity enhancement with different inter-pulse delay were investigated. In our experimental conditions, the propagation regime of SP plasma is a laser-supported combustion (LSC) wave. The DP plasmas with short inter-pulse delays show the characteristics of a laser-supported detonation (LSD) wave, and the enhancement mechanism is mainly reheating for pre-plasma. On the contrary, the DP plasmas with longer inter-pulse delays show the characteristics of a LSC wave, and the increase in laser ablation is a major contributing factor to the signal improvement. In addition, the spectral lines, which are difficult to excite by SP-LIBS, can be obtained by selecting an appropriate inter-pulse delay and setting a short delay, which provides a new idea for the measurement of trace elements. Combustion caused by hydrogen-dominated combustible gas mixtures presents critical threats to nuclear safety during severe accidents in nuclear power plants, primarily due to their propensity for flame acceleration, deflagration, and subsequent detonation. Although the direct initiation of detonation from localized hydrogen accumulation at critical concentrations remains challenging, flame acceleration can induce rapid pressure escalation and lead to deflagration-to-detonation transition under suitable conditions. The ultra-high-pressure loads generated almost instantaneously will pose serious risks to containment integrity and equipment or instrument functionality within nuclear facilities. This paper investigates the flame acceleration mechanism and criterion, which is crucial for precise hydrogen risk assessment. A hydrogen combustion flame acceleration model is developed, integrating both laminar and turbulent flame propagation across multiple control volumes. Validated against the RUT test, the model demonstrates high fidelity with a maximum 3.17% deviation in flame propagation velocity and successfully captures the pressure discontinuity. The developed model enables comprehensive simulation with improved predictive accuracy of the flame acceleration process, making it an essential tool for advancing fundamental understanding of hydrogen behavior and severe accident analysis. This model’s development marks a paradigm in nuclear safety research by providing an analytical instrument for integrated severe accident programs in nuclear power plants, contributing to improving the potential hydrogen risks assessment and management in next-generation reactor safety. Battery electric buses (BEBs) are widely regarded as a safe and sustainable alternative to internal combustion vehicles. However, the lithium-ion batteries that power them present safety risks. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the safety of battery electric buses, highlighting current challenges, relevant regulations and proposed solutions to enhance safety. There are significant shortcomings in the fire safety regulations for buses, especially concerning qualification methods for bus interiors. Enclosed spaces and structures represent the most critical risks for these transport systems. The presence of large vehicles, such as BEBs, in tunnels could increase the risk of transitioning from deflagration to detonation. Fires involving such vehicles produce more soot than fires from internal combustion engine buses (ICEBs) and have slightly higher toxicity levels. High-pressure water spraying systems are not yet an effective solution, as not all the heat is removed if the thermal runaway has already been triggered for several minutes, and their action remains largely limited to the outside of the battery pack. Another critical issue is cybersecurity. Managing and protecting BEBs from cyber threats is complex and requires robust strategies. Full article

Pulse detonation engines (PDEs) have become a transformative technology in the field of aerospace propulsion due to the high thermal efficiency of detonation combustion. However, initiating detonation waves within a limited space and time is key to their engineering application. Direct initiation, though theoretically feasible, requires very high critical energy, making it almost impossible to achieve in engineering applications. Therefore, indirect initiation methods are more practical for triggering detonation waves that produce a deflagration wave through a low-energy ignition source and realizing deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) through flame acceleration and the interaction between flames and shock waves. This review systematically summarizes recent advancements in DDT methods in pulse detonation engines, focusing on the basic principles, influencing factors, technical bottlenecks, and optimization paths of the following: hot jet ignition initiation, obstacle-induced detonation, shock wave focusing initiation, and plasma ignition initiation. The results indicate that hot jet ignition enhances turbulent mixing and energy deposition by injecting energy through high-energy jets using high temperature and high pressure; this can reduce the DDT distance of hydrocarbon fuels by 30–50%. However, this approach faces challenges such as significant jet energy dissipation, flow field instability, and the complexity of the energy supply system. Solid obstacle-induced detonation passively generates turbulence and shock wave reflection through geometric structures to accelerate flame propagation, which has the advantages of having a simple structure and high reliability. However, the problem of large pressure loss and thermal fatigue restricts its long-term application. Fluidic obstacle-induced detonation enhances mixing uniformity through dynamic disturbance to reduce pressure loss. However, its engineering application is constrained by high energy consumption requirements and jet–mainstream coupling instability. Shock wave focusing utilizes concave cavities or annular structures to concentrate shock wave energy, which directly triggers detonation under high ignition efficiency and controllability. However, it is extremely sensitive to geometric parameters and incident shock wave conditions, and the structural thermal load issue is prominent. Plasma ignition generates active particles and instantaneous high temperatures through high-energy discharge, which chemically activates fuel and precisely controls the initiation sequence, especially for low-reactivity fuels. However, critical challenges, such as high energy consumption, electrode ablation, and decreased discharge efficiency under high-pressure environments, need to be addressed urgently. In order to overcome the bottlenecks in energy efficiency, thermal management, and dynamic stability, future research should focus on multi-modal synergistic initiation strategies, the development of high-temperature-resistant materials, and intelligent dynamic control technologies. Additionally, establishing a standardized testing system to quantify DDT distance, energy thresholds, and dynamic stability indicators is essential to promote its transition to engineering applications. Furthermore, exploring the DDT mechanisms of low-carbon fuels is imperative to advance carbon neutrality goals. By summarizing the existing DDT methods and technical bottlenecks, this paper provides theoretical support for the engineering design and application of PDEs, contributing to breakthroughs in the fields of hypersonic propulsion, airspace shuttle systems, and other fields. This study investigates the combustion characteristics of silicon-based time-delay compositions with bismuth(III) oxide (Bi2O3), antimony(III) oxide (Sb2O3), and lead(II,IV) oxide (Pb3O4) to identify formulations with pressure-independent burn rates. Unlike conventional pyrotechnic compositions, silicon-based mixtures offer an improved energy density and reduced sensitivity to pressure variations. The linear combustion rate of the compositions was determined for a wide range of silicon contents and for different compaction pressures. Experimental results show that burn rates range from 8 mm s⁻1 to 195 mm s⁻1, depending on the metal oxide type and silicon content. The highest rate (195 mm s⁻1) was observed for Si/Pb3O4 at 30 wt.% silicon, while Si/Sb2O3 had the lowest (10 ÷ 35 mm s⁻1). The calorimetric heat of combustion varied between 1200 J g⁻1 and 1400 J g⁻1, with adiabatic combustion temperatures reaching 2200 K, calculated from this heat. DTA and XRD confirmed the condensed-phase combustion, forming reduced metal phases and silicon oxides. SEM and EDS revealed a porous residue structure. This work introduces a novel approach to time-delay compositions using silicon as a primary fuel. It shows that specific silicon oxide–metal systems maintain stable combustion for different loading pressures and advance pyrotechnic formulations for safer and more efficient industrial and defense applications. A three-dimensional numerical investigation using ethylene–oxygen was conducted to examine the characteristics of detonation waves in a non-premixed rotating detonation engine (RDE) across three equivalence ratio conditions: fuel-lean, stoichiometric, and fuel-rich. The study aims to identify the distinct timescales associated with detonation wave propagation within the combustor and to analyze their impact on detonation wave behavior, emphasizing the influence of equivalence ratio and injector behavior on detonation wave characteristics. The results indicate that the wave behavior varies with mixture concentration, with the ethylene injector demonstrating greater stiffness compared to the oxygen injector. In lean mixtures, characterized by excess oxidizer, waves exhibit less intensity and slower progression toward equilibrium, resulting in prolonged reaction times. Rich mixtures, with excess fuel, also show a delayed approach to equilibrium and an extended chemical reaction timescale. In contrast, the near-stoichiometric mixture achieves efficient combustion with the highest thermicity, rapidly reaching equilibrium and exhibiting the shortest chemical reaction timescale. Overall, the induction timescale is generally 2–3 times longer than its respective chemical reaction timescale, while the equilibrium timescale spans a broad range, reflecting the complex, rapid dynamics inherent in these chemical processes. This study identifies the role of the characteristic chemical timescale in influencing the progression of pre-detonation deflagration in practical RDEs. Prolonged induction times in non-ideal conditions, such as those arising from equivalence ratio variations, promote incomplete reactions, thereby contributing to pre-detonation phenomena and advancing our understanding of the underlying flow physics. A new high-temperature allothermal gasification technology is used to process three types of oil waste: ground oil sludge (GOS), tank oil sludge (TOS), and petcoke. The gasifying agent (GA), mainly composed of H2O and CO2 at a temperature above 2300 K and atmospheric pressure, is produced by pulsed detonations of a near-stochiometric methane-oxygen mixture. The gasification experiments show that the dry off-gas contains 80–90 vol.% combustible gas composed of 40–45 vol.% CO, 28–33 vol.% H2, 5–10 vol.% CH4, and 4–7 vol.% noncondensable C2–C3 hydrocarbons. The gasification process is accompanied by the removal of mass from a flow gasifier in the form of fine solid ash particles with a size of about 1 μm. The ash particles have a mesoporous structure with a specific surface area ranging from 3.3 to 15.2 m2/g and pore sizes ranging from 3 to 50 nm. The measured wall temperatures of the gasifier are in reasonable agreement with the calculated value of the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature of the off-gas. The measured CO content in the off-gas is in good agreement with the thermodynamic calculations. The reduced H2 content and elevated contents of CH4, CO2, and CxHy are apparently associated with the nonuniform distribution of the waste/GA mass ratio in the gasifier. To increase the H2 yield, it is necessary to improve the mixing of waste with the GA. It is proposed to mix crushed petcoke with oil sludge to form a paste and feed the combined waste into the gasifier using a specially designed feeder. Full article

The substitution of aluminum powder with highly reactive ultrafine aluminum-based metal fuels has a significant impact on the energy release of aluminum-containing energetic materials because of their excellent energy density and combustion performances. A series of ultrafine spherical Al-Mg alloy fuels with different contents of magnesium were prepared by close-coupled gas atomization technology. The properties of Al-Mg alloy powders of 13~15 μm were tested by SEM, TG-DSC, and laser ignition experiments. Results show that alloying with magnesium can significantly enhance thermal oxidation and combustion performance, leading to more oxidation weight gains and higher combustion heat release. HMX-based castable explosives with the same content of Al and the novel Al-Mg alloy were made and tested. Results show that the detonation performances of HMX/Al-Mg alloy/HTPB are better than HMX/Al/HTPB. Compared to the HMX/Al/HTPB explosive, the detonation heat of HMX/ Al-Mg alloy/HTPB was increased by 200 kJ/kg, the energy release efficiency was enhanced from 80.55% to 83.19%, the detonation velocity was increased by 114 m/s, and the shock wave overpressure at 5 m was increased by 83%. This research provides a new type of composite metal fuel for improving the combustion performance of Al powder. Full article

This study numerically explores the initiation of detonation through shock wave reflection and focusing on a 90-degree wedge in varying mixtures of hydrogen–air. The simulations were conducted using the ddtFoam code, an integral part of the OpenFOAM open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package of density-based code for solving the unsteady, compressible Navier–Stokes equations. The simulation results unveil three potential outcomes in the corner post-reflection: deflagrative ignition in the corner, deflagrative ignition with intermediate transient phases leading to a delayed transition to detonation in the trailing combustion zone close to the apex of the wedge, and ignition with an immediate transition to detonation, resulting in the formation of a detonation wave in the corner tip. In the experimental investigation, the transition velocity for the stoichiometric mixture stood at approximately 719 m/s. In contrast, the numerical simulation indicated a transition velocity of 664 m/s for the same stoichiometric mixture, reflecting a 5.5% decrease in velocity. Such an underestimation level of 5–8% by the simulation results was observed for mixtures of 25–45% H2 in air. Full article

The process of normal (N) zone propagation in three superconducting YBaCuO thin films with different Pearl length values was theoretically studied. The point appearance of the N zone was found to result from powerful energy release caused by micro-sized magnetic cumulation. Solutions of the heat equation for hot electrons, diffusing to ~15 nm depth into the edge of the Pearl length, were obtained for the two length cases. The hot electron thermalization induced a transition to N state at the aforementioned depth due to fast exceeding of Tc, followed by flash high temperature growth. In the third case, we considered a process of crack branching when the superconducting current concentrated at the tips, followed by the transition to N state caused by exceeding jc. The superfast reaction of the superconductor allowed it to restore the energy loss at the Pearl length in all cases. This explains the step propagation process of the N zone with velocities up to 2.7 × 103 and 1.1 × 103 m/s in the first and second cases. In the third, the propagation can reach the detonation wave velocity of about 1 × 104 m/s. It is concluded that the process of the N zone propagation has the character of a combustion wave. Equivalent ratio (ER) is an important factor affecting detonation characteristics and propulsion performance of rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE). In this paper, the effects of different equivalent ratios detonation characteristics and thrust performance of methane-oxygen RDRE were studied by 2D numerical simulation. The premixed reactants were injected through the injection holes to simulate the discrete injection of reactants on the injection panel in actual RDRE, the number of injection holes was 60 and 120. The results show that there is hybrid detonation mode (HDM), co-direction multi-wave detonation mode (CMM) and unstable detonation mode (UDM) in detonation combustion due to the influence of equivalent ratio and the number of injection holes, and the co-directional multi-wave detonation mode is beneficial to the thrust stability of RDRE. At the last, the number of detonation waves in RDRE decreases with the increase in the equivalent ratio, and the specific impulse (Isp) increases with the increase of the equivalent ratio. Methanol can be synthesized using green electricity and carbon dioxide, making it a green, carbon-neutral fuel with significant potential for widespread application in engines. However, due to its low ignition energy and high laminar flame speed, methanol is susceptible to hotspot-induced pre-ignition and even knocking under high-temperature, high-load engine conditions, posing challenges to engine performance and reliability. This paper systematically reviews the manifestations and mechanisms of pre-ignition and knocking in methanol engines. Pre-ignition can be sustained or sporadic. Sustained pre-ignition is caused by overheating of structural components, while sporadic pre-ignition is often linked to oil droplets entering the combustion chamber from the piston crevice. Residual exhaust gas trapped within the spark plug can also initiate pre-ignition. Knocking, characterized by pressure oscillations, arises from the auto-ignition of hotspots in the end-gas or, potentially, from deflagration-to-detonation transition, although the latter requires further experimental validation. Factors influencing pre-ignition and knocking, including engine oil, in-cylinder deposits, structural hotspots, and the reactivity of the air–fuel mixture, are also analyzed. Based on these factors, the paper concludes that the primary approach to suppressing pre-ignition and knocking in methanol engines is controlling the formation of pre-ignition sources and reducing the reactivity of the air–fuel mixture. Furthermore, it addresses existing issues and limitations in current research, such as combustion testing techniques, numerical simulation accuracy, and the mechanisms of methanol–oil interaction, and offers related recommendations. Pressure-gain combustion (PGC) represents a promising alternative to conventional propulsion systems for interplanetary travel due to its key advantages, including higher thermodynamic efficiency, increased specific impulse, and more compact engine designs. However, to elevate this technology to a sufficient technology readiness level (TRL) for practical application, extensive experimental validation, particularly under vacuum conditions, is essential. This study focuses on the performance of a pulsed-detonation combustor (PDC) under near-vacuum conditions, with two primary objectives: to assess the combustor’s ignition capabilities and to characterize the shock wave behavior at the exit plane. To achieve these objectives, high-frequency pressure sensors are strategically positioned within both the vacuum chamber and the combustor prototype to capture the pressure cycles during operation, providing insights into pressure augmentation over a period of approximately 0.5 s. Additionally, the Schlieren visualization technique is employed to analyze and interpret the flow structures of the exhaust jet. The combination of these experimental methods enables a comprehensive understanding of the ignition dynamics and the development of shock waves, contributing valuable data to advance PGC technology for space-exploration applications. Hydrogen is regarded as a promising energy source for the future due to its clean combustion products, remarkable efficiency and renewability. However, its characteristics of low-ignition energy, a wide flammable range from 4% to 75%, and a rapid flame speed may bring significant explosion risks. Typically, accidental release of hydrogen into confined enclosures can result in a flammable hydrogen–air mixture with concentration gradients, possibly leading to flame acceleration (FA) and deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). The current study focused on the evolutions of the FA and DDT of homogenous/inhomogeneous hydrogen–air mixtures, based on the open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) platform OpenFOAM and the modified Weller et al.’s combustion model, taking into account the Darrieus–Landau (DL) and Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instabilities, the turbulence and the non-unity Lewis number. Numerical simulations were carried out for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous mixtures in an enclosed channel 5.4 m in length and 0.06 m in height. The predictions demonstrate good quantitative agreement with the experimental measurements in flame-tip position, speed and pressure profiles by Boeck et al. The characteristics of flame structure, wave evolution and vortex were also discussed. Full article

Machine learning tools represent a key methodology for the shape optimization of complex geometries in the turbomachinery field. One of the current challenges is to redesign High-Pressure Turbine (HPT) stages to couple them with innovative combustion technologies. In fact, recent developments in the gas turbine field have led to the introduction of pioneering solutions such as Rotating Detonation Combustors (RDCs) aimed at improving the overall efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle at low overall pressure ratios. In this study, a HPT vane equipped with diffusive endwalls is optimized to allow for ingesting a high-subsonic flow (Ma=0.6) delivered by a RDC. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the prediction ability of machine learning tools in case of multiple input parameters and different objective functions. Moreover, the model predictions are used to identify the optimal solutions in terms of vane efficiency and operating conditions. A new solution that combines optimal vane efficiency with target values for both the exit flow angle and the inlet Mach number is also presented. The impact of the newly designed geometrical features on the development of secondary flows is analyzed through numerical simulations. The optimized geometry achieved strong mitigation of the intensity of the secondary flows induced by the main flow separation from the diffusive endwalls. As a consequence, the overall vane aerodynamic efficiency increased with respect to the baseline design. Full article
