Steel is an important product in many engineering sectors; however, steelmaking remains one of the largest CO2 emitters. Therefore, new governmental policies drive the steelmaking industry toward a cleaner and more sustainable operation such as the gas-based direct reduction–electric arc furnace process. To become carbon neutral, utilizing more scrap is one of the feasible solutions to achieve this goal. Addressing knowledge gaps regarding scrap heterogeneity (size, shape, and composition) is essential to evaluate the effects of increased scrap ratios in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations. This review systematically examines heat and mass transfer correlations relevant to scrap melting in BOF steelmaking, with a focus on low Prandtl number fluids (thick thermal boundary layer) and dense particulate systems. Notably, a majority of these correlations are designed for fluids with high Prandtl numbers. Even for the ones tailored for low Prandtl, they lack the introduction of the porosity effect which alters the melting behavior in such high temperature systems. The review is divided into two parts. First, it surveys heat transfer correlations for single elements (rods, spheres, and prisms) under natural and forced convection, emphasizing their role in predicting melting rates and estimating maximum shell size. Second, it introduces three numerical modeling approaches, highlighting that the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) offers flexibility in modeling diverse scrap geometries and contact interactions while being computationally less demanding than particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (PR-DNS). Nevertheless, the review identifies a critical gap: no current CFD–DEM framework simultaneously captures shell formation (particle growth) and non-isotropic scrap melting (particle shrinkage), underscoring the need for improved multiphase models to enhance BOF operation. The growing global demand for electricity, driven by the development of electromobility, data centers, and smart technologies, necessitates innovative approaches to energy generation. Wind power, as a clean and renewable energy source, plays a pivotal role in the global transition towards low-carbon power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of generator technologies used in wind turbine applications, ranging from conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines to advanced concepts such as low-speed direct-drive (DD) generators, axial-flux topologies, and superconducting generators utilizing low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The advantages and limitations of each design are discussed in the context of efficiency, weight, reliability, scalability, and suitability for offshore deployment. Special attention is given to HTS-based generator systems, which offer superior power density and reduced losses, along with challenges related to cryogenic cooling and materials engineering. Furthermore, the paper analyzes selected modern generator designs to provide references for enhancing the performance of grid-synchronized hybrid microgrids integrating solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, and HTS-enhanced generators. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers developing next-generation wind energy technologies with improved efficiency and integration potential. Full article

Dynamic wireless charging systems have emerged as a promising solution to extend the driving range of electric vehicles by enabling energy transfer while the vehicle is in motion. However, the segment-based charging lane structure introduces challenges such as pulsation of the output power and the need for precise switching control of the transmitting segments. This paper proposes a position-sensorless control method for managing transmitting lines in a dynamic wireless charging system. The proposed approach uses a segmented charging lane structure combined with two receiving coils and LCC compensation circuits on both the transmitting and receiving sides. Based on theoretical analysis, the study determines the optimal switching positions and signals to reduce the current fluctuation. To validate the proposed method, a dynamic wireless charging system prototype with a power rating of 3kW was designed, constructed, and tested in a laboratory environment. The results demonstrate that the proposed position-sensorless control method effectively mitigates power fluctuations and enhances the stability and efficiency of the wireless charging process. This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

With the rapid proliferation of real-time digital communication, particularly in multimedia applications, securing transmitted image data has become a vital concern. While chaotic systems have shown strong potential for cryptographic use, most existing approaches rely on low-dimensional, integer-order architectures, limiting their complexity and resistance to attacks. Advances in fractional calculus and memristive technologies offer new avenues for enhancing security through more complex and tunable dynamics. However, the practical deployment of high-dimensional fractional-order memristive chaotic systems in hardware remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by presenting a secure image transmission system implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) using a universal high-dimensional memristive chaotic topology with arbitrary-order dynamics. The design leverages four- and five-dimensional hyperchaotic oscillators, analyzed through bifurcation diagrams and Lyapunov exponents. To enable efficient hardware realization, the chaotic dynamics are approximated using the explicit fractional-order Runge–Kutta (EFORK) method with the Caputo fractional derivative, implemented in VHDL. Deployed on the Xilinx Artix-7 AC701 platform, synchronized master–slave chaotic generators drive a multi-stage stream cipher. This encryption process supports both RGB and grayscale images. Evaluation shows strong cryptographic properties: correlation of 6.1081×105, entropy of 7.9991, NPCR of 99.9776%, UACI of 33.4154%, and a key space of 21344, confirming high security and robustness. This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

Teleoperation emerged as a promising fallback for situations beyond the capabilities of automated vehicles. Nevertheless, teleoperation still faces challenges, such as reduced situational awareness. Since situational awareness is primarily built through the remote operator’s visual perception, the graphical user interface (GUI) design is critical. In addition to video feed, supplemental informational elements are crucial—not only for the predominantly studied remote driving, but also for emerging desk-based remote assistance concepts. This work develops a GUI for different teleoperation concepts by identifying key informational elements during the teleoperation process through expert interviews (N = 9). Following this, a static and dynamic GUI prototype was developed and evaluated in a click dummy study (N = 36). Thereby, the dynamic GUI adapts the number of displayed elements according to the teleoperation phase. Results show that both GUIs achieve good system usability scale (SUS) ratings, with the dynamic GUI significantly outperforming the static version in both usability and task completion time. However, the results might be attributable to a learning effect due to the lack of randomization. The user experience questionnaire (UEQ) score shows potential for improvement. To enhance the user experience, the GUI should be evaluated in a follow-up study that includes interaction with a real vehicle. Full article

Hydrogen energy is a pivotal carrier for achieving carbon neutrality, requiring green and efficient production via water electrolysis. However, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves a sluggish four-electron transfer process, resulting in high overpotentials, while the prohibitive cost and complex preparation of precious metal catalysts impede large-scale commercialization. In this study, we develop a FeCo-based bimetallic deep eutectic solvent (FeCo-DES) as a multifunctional reaction medium for engineering a three-dimensional (3D) coral-like FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF composite via a mild one-step impregnation approach (70 °C, ambient pressure). The FeCo-DES simultaneously serves as the solvent, metal source, and redox agent, driving the controlled in situ assembly of FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl hybrids on Ni(OH)2/NiOOH-coated nickel foam (NF). This hierarchical architecture induces synergistic enhancement through geometric structural effects combined with multi-component electronic interactions. Consequently, the FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF catalyst achieves a remarkably low overpotential of 197 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 65.9 mV dec−1, along with 98% current retention over 24 h chronopotentiometry. This study pioneers a DES-mediated strategy for designing robust composite catalysts, establishing a scalable blueprint for high-performance and low-cost OER systems. Full article

Underwater propulsion systems are the fundamental functional modules of underwater robotics and are crucial in intricate underwater operational scenarios. This paper proposes a biomimetic underwater robot propulsion scheme that is motivated by the hindlimb movements of the bullfrog. A multi-linkage mechanism was developed to replicate the “kicking-and-retracting” motion of the bullfrog by employing motion capture systems to acquire biological data on their hindlimb movements. The FDM 3D printing and PC board engraving techniques were employed to construct the experimental prototype. The prototype’s biomimetic and motion characteristics were validated through motion capture experiments and comparisons with a real bullfrog. The biomimetic bullfrog hindlimb propulsion system was tested with six-degree-of-freedom force experiments to evaluate its propulsion capabilities. The system achieved an average thrust of 2.65 N. The effectiveness of motor drive parameter optimization was validated by voltage comparison experiments, which demonstrated a nonlinear increase in thrust as voltage increased. This design approach, which transforms biological kinematic characteristics into mechanical drive parameters, exhibits excellent feasibility and efficacy, offering a novel solution and quantitative reference for underwater robot design. The vast majority of photocatalysts find it difficult to consistently and stably exhibit high performance due to the variability of sunlight intensity within a day, as well as the high energy consumption of artificial light sources. In this study, mechanoluminescent Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu,Dy phosphors is combined with NiS@g-C3N4 composite to construct a ternary heterogeneous photocatalytic system, denoted as NCS. In addition to the enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers by the formation of a heterojunction, the introduction of Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu,Dy provides an ultra-driving force for the photocatalytic reactions owing to its mechanoluminescence-induced excitation. Results show that the degradation rate of RhB increased significantly in comparison with pristine g-C3N4 and NiS@g-C3N4, indicating the obvious advantages of the ternary system for charge separation and migration. Moreover, the additional photocatalytic activity of NCS under ultrasound stimulation makes it a promising all-weather photocatalyst even in dark environments. This novel strategy opens up new horizons for the synergistic combination of light-driven and ultrasound-driven heterogeneous photocatalytic systems, and it also has important reference significance for the design and application of high-performance photocatalysts. Medium and large-sized birds exhibit remarkable agility and maneuverability in flight, with their flapping motion encompassing degrees of freedom in flapping, twist, and swing, which enables them to adapt effectively to harsh ecological environments. This study proposes a flapping–twist coupled driving mechanism for large-scale flapping-wing aircraft by mimicking the motion patterns of birds. The mechanism generates simultaneous twist and flapping motions based on the phase difference of double cranks, allowing for the adjustment of twist amplitude through modifications in crank radius and phase difference. The objective of this work is to optimize the lift and thrust of the flapping wing to enhance its flight performance. To achieve this, we first derived the kinematic model of the mechanism and conducted motion simulations. To mitigate the effects of the flapping wing’s flexibility, a rigid flapping wing was designed and manufactured. Through wind tunnel experiments, the flapping wing system was tested. The results demonstrated that, compared to the non-twist condition, there exists an optimal twist amplitude that slightly increases the lift of the flapping wing while significantly enhancing the thrust. It is hoped that this study will provide guidance for the design of multi-degree-of-freedom flapping wing mechanisms. Full article

This work addresses distributed fixed-time bearing-only formation stabilization for multi-agent systems lacking shared orientation knowledge. Addressing the challenge of missing global coordinate alignment in multi-agent systems, this work introduces a novel distributed estimator ensuring almost globally fixed-time convergence of orientation estimates. Leveraging this estimator, we develop a distributed bearing-only formation control law specifically designed for agents governed by double-integrator dynamics, guaranteeing fixed-time convergence. Comprehensive stability analysis proves the almost global fixed-time stability of the overall closed-loop system. Crucially, the proposed control strategy drives actual formation to achieve the desired geometric pattern with almost global exponential convergence within a fixed time bound. Rigorous numerical experiments corroborate the theoretical framework. Full article

The dynamics of the vibrational mode of motion of the driving member of a nonideal system, a mixing–whipping device based on a simple slide-crank mechanism, was studied. The highly nonlinear differential equations of motion were solved numerically by the Runge–Kutta method. The interaction of the mixing–whipping device with the nonideal excitation source causes the rotational speed of the engine shaft and the rotation angle of the driving member to fluctuate, accomplishing a damped process. The parameters of the device and the nonideal energy source have an effect on the kinematic, vibrational and energy characteristics of the system. An increase in the engine’s torque, crank length, number and radius of piston holes, and piston mass, as well as a decrease in the fluid’s density, leads to a reduction in the oscillation range of the crank angle, amplitude and period of angular velocity oscillations of the engine shaft and the mixing–whipping force power. The effects of a nonideal energy source may be used in designing a mixing–whipping device based on a slider-crank mechanism to select effective system parameters and an energy-saving motor in accordance with the requirements of technological processes and products. As autonomous driving technologies advance, the need for human-in-the-loop systems becomes increasingly critical to ensure safety, adaptability, and public confidence. This paper presents the design and evaluation of a context-aware immersive teleoperation interface that integrates real-time simulation, virtual reality, and multimodal feedback to support remote interventions in emergency scenarios. Built on a modular ROS2 architecture, the system allows seamless transition between simulated and physical platforms, enabling safe and reproducible testing. The experimental results show a high task success rate and user satisfaction, highlighting the importance of intuitive controls, gesture recognition accuracy, and low-latency feedback. Our findings contribute to the understanding of human-robot interaction (HRI) in immersive teleoperation contexts and provide insights into the role of multisensory feedback and control modalities in building trust and situational awareness for remote operators. Ultimately, this approach is intended to support the broader acceptability of autonomous driving technologies by enhancing human supervision, control, and confidence. Full article

Intelligent driving is a key technology in the field of automotive manufacturing due to its advantages in environmental protection, energy efficiency, and economy. However, since the intelligent driving model is an uncertain multi-input multi-output dynamic system, especially in an interactive environment, it faces uncertainties such as non-uniform trial lengths, unknown nonlinear parameters, and unknown control direction. In this paper, an adaptive iterative learning control method is proposed for vehicle systems with non-uniform trial lengths and asymmetric control gain matrices. Unlike the existing research on adaptive iterative learning for non-uniform test lengths, this paper assumes that the elements of the system’s control gain matrix are asymmetric. Therefore, the assumption made in traditional adaptive iterative learning methods that the control gain matrix of the system is known or real, symmetric, and positive definite (or negative definite) is relaxed. Finally, to prove the convergence of the system, a composite energy function is designed, and the effectiveness of the adaptive iterative learning method is verified using vehicle systems. This paper aims to address the challenges in intelligent driving control and decision-making caused by environmental and system uncertainties and provides a theoretical basis and technical support for intelligent driving, promoting the high-quality development of intelligent transportation.
