Dihydroquercetin and Related Flavonoids in Antioxidant Formulations with α-Tocopherol

The concomitant utilization of flavonoids and α-tocopherol has the potential to establish a comprehensive antioxidant system that operates in both hydrophilic and lipophilic environments. The objective of this study was to examine the antioxidant interactions between dihydroquercetin, a flavonoid that has shown promise in various studies, as well as structurally related flavonoids, and α-tocopherol in various ratios. The antioxidant capacity was assessed using two ABTS•+ radical-cation inhibition assays: a decolorization assay and a lag-time assay. The results of this study indicated that formulations of dihydroquercetin, quercetin, rutin, or morin with α-tocopherol exhibited additive or mildly subadditive interactions, independent of their ratios. A two-phase pattern was exhibited by the lag-time data, which, in comparison with individual components, allowed us to suggest that α-tocopherol appeared to dominate the initial phase of radical scavenging, while flavonoids became active in the later phase. This finding indicates that α-tocopherol may play a role in protecting flavonoids from premature oxidation in alcoholic media. The findings could prove valuable for the rational design of antioxidant formulations in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, the two-stage antioxidant behavior offers prospects for the formulation of straightforward, cost-effective analytical approaches to measure components in binary antioxidant formulations. This paper describes a kind of linear quadratic uncertain stochastic hybrid differential game system grounded in the framework of subadditive measures, in which the system dynamics are described by a hybrid differential equation with Wiener–Liu noise and the performance index function is quadratic. Firstly, we introduce the concept of hybrid differential games and establish the Max–Min Lemma for the two-player zero-sum game scenario. Next, we discuss the analysis of saddle-point equilibrium strategies for linear quadratic hybrid differential games, addressing both finite and infinite time horizons. Through the incorporation of a generalized Riccati differential equation (GRDE) and guided by the principles of the Itô–Liu formula, we prove that that solving the GRDE is crucial and serves as both a sufficient and necessary precondition for identifying equilibrium strategies within a finite horizon. In addition, we also acquire the explicit formulations of equilibrium strategies in closed forms, alongside determining the optimal values of the cost function. Through the adoption of a generalized Riccati equation (GRE) and applying a similar approach to that used for the finite horizon case, we establish that the ability to solve the GRE constitutes a sufficient criterion for the emergence of equilibrium strategies in scenarios extending over an infinite horizon. Moreover, we explore the dynamics of a resource extraction problem within a finite horizon and separately delve into an H control problem applicable to an infinite horizon. A long-lasting dilemma on the efficient provision of services of general economic interest has become increasingly important in the waste management industry: competition or monopoly in municipal solid waste management. Previous literature has primarily examined the economics of scale and scope to provide an adequate response. Here, we contribute by investigating subadditivity in municipal solid waste management service costs. Subadditivity is a critical concept used to justify imperfect competition, which encourages natural monopolies where one producer will function more effectively than more firms. To test the hypothesis that a subadditivity in costs in waste management exists, we design a simulation based on empirical data for Milan, Italy. We compared the total production cost of the incumbent firm with the alternative hypothesis built by dividing the city into four areas and assigning each area to a different hypothetical firm. The results suggest that the existence of subadditivity results in 6% lower production costs, primarily stemming from business synergies, lower transactional costs, and optimization of productive resources and facilities. The evidence justifies, ceteris paribus, that the provision by a single firm is preferable to multiple firms in the analysis case. Implications for policies are straightforward. The one-fit rule approach fails to set the best condition for policymakers to create a level playing field transparently and efficiently for industry operators to perform efficiently. Full article

Using a hedging strategy to stabilize fuel price is very important for airline companies in order to reduce the cost of their main business. In this paper, we construct models for managing the risk of the hedging strategy. First, we use conditional value at risk (CVaR) to measure the risk of an airline company’s hedging strategy. Compared with the value at risk (VaR), CVaR satisfies subadditivity, positive homogeneity, monotonicity, and transfer invariance. Therefore, CVaR is a consistent method of risk measurement. Second, time-varying state transition probability is introduced into our model in order to build a Markov Switching-GARCH (MS-GARCH). MS-GARCH takes dynamic changes of market state into account, a feature which has obvious advantages over the traditional constant state model. Additionally, we use a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to estimate the parameters of MS-GARCH based on Gibbs sampling. We use fuel oil futures data from the Shanghai Futures Stock Exchange to implement and evaluate our model. In this paper, we empirically estimate the risk of airlines’ hedging strategy and draw the conclusion that our model is obviously effective in terms of the risk management of hedging, a use which has a certain guiding significance for reality. Switching between languages, or codeswitching, is a cognitive ability that multilinguals can perform with ease. This study investigates whether codeswitching during sentence reading affects early access to meaning, as indexed by the robust brain response called the N400. We hypothesize that the brain prioritizes the meaning of the word during comprehension with codeswitching costs emerging at a different stage of processing. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while Spanish–English balanced bilinguals (n = 24) read Spanish sentences containing a target noun that could create a semantic violation, codeswitch or both. Self-reported frequency of daily codeswitching was used as a regressor to determine if the cost of reading a switch is modulated by codeswitching experience. A robust N400 to semantic violations was followed by a late positive component (LPC). Codeswitches modulated the left anterior negativity (LAN) and LPC, but not the N400, with codeswitched semantic violations resulting in a sub-additive interaction. Codeswitching experience modulated the LPC, but not the N400. The results suggest that early access to semantic memory during comprehension happens independent of the language in which the words are presented. Codeswitching affects a separate stage of comprehension with switching experience modulating the brain’s response to experiencing a language switch. Full article
