Nematocidal Activity of a Variety of Plants Used in Mexico Against Strongyloides venezuelensis

Strongyloidiasis represents a public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions. The medicinal plants demonstrate the potential of plants as a source of molecules with helminthic activity. In this research, we assessed the potential of five extracts medicinally used in Mexico against Strongyloides venezuelensis third-stage infective larvae (L3). Plant methanol (MeOH) extracts of Argemone mexicana (chicalote), Jatropha dioica (Sangre de Drago), Lippia graveolens (oregano), Thymus vulgaris (tomillo), and Kalanchoe daigremontiana (aranto) were prepared by the maceration technique. The toxicity of the extracts was evaluated in human red blood cells by the hemolysis test and in monkey kidney epithelial cells (Vero cells) using the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In addition, we showed their antioxidant potential by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The methanolic extracts of A. mexicana, J. dioica, L. graveolens, and T. vulgaris exhibited significant activity against L3 cultures at 72 and 96 h post-incubation. None of the extracts showed hemolytic effects on red cells or Vero cells. L. graveolens demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity, with an EC50 of 19.80 µg/mL. Plant MeOH extracts used in this study showed a promising anthelmintic effect in vitro, making it a suitable candidate for future research in nematocidal therapies. Full article

The present work studies biofuel production using an American native species that belongs to the Argemone genus. It is considered a weed, and its presence extends from the southern United States to some areas of South America; the species Argemone pleiacantha, together with other species of the same genus, is known as “chicalote”. Oil physical and chemical properties confirm that chicalote oil is an effective raw material for biofuel production, presenting a fatty acid composition similar to that of soybean oil. A biodiesel production study was carried out using two methods of synthesis, conventional and ultrasound-assisted transesterification, employing the same molar ratio and amount of catalyst in both cases. Reaction time and supplied energy during synthesis were compared in batch mode. The results revealed that ultrasound-assisted transesterification has significant advantages over the conventional one in terms of reaction time and energy savings during chicalote oil synthesis to produce fatty acid methyl esters. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) comprise a group of heterogeneous and complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to ASD etiology. DNA methylation is particularly relevant for ASD due to its mediating role in the complex interaction between genotype and environment and has been implicated in ASD pathophysiology. The lack of diversity in DNA methylation studies in ASD individuals is remarkable. Since genetic and environmental factors are likely to vary across populations, the study of underrepresented populations is necessary to understand the molecular alterations involved in ASD and the risk factors underlying these changes. This study explored genome-wide differences in DNA methylation patterns in buccal epithelium cells between Mexican ASD patients (n = 27) and age-matched typically developing (TD: n = 15) children. DNA methylation profiles were evaluated with the Illumina 450k array. We evaluated the interaction between sex and ASD and found a differentially methylated region (DMR) over the 5′UTR region of ZFP57 and one of its targets, RASGRF2. These results match previous findings in brain tissue, which may indicate that ZFP57 could be used as a proxy for DNA methylation in different tissues. This is the first study performed in a Mexican, and subsequently, Latin American, population that evaluates DNA methylation in ASD patients. Full article
