Chemical contamination of milk represents a relevant food safety concern, particularly in countries where systematic monitoring programs are still limited. In Algeria, information on human exposure to aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination remains fragmented or lacking. This study assessed the occurrence of AFM1 and 17 PFAS in cow and goat milk and explored farm-level management practices potentially influencing contamination. Bulk-tank milk samples were collected from 26 dairy cattle and 11 dairy goat farms. Farm characteristics, including feeding strategies, water sources, grazing practices, and herd size, were recorded using structured questionnaires to characterize farm-level practices and explore their potential association with contamination patterns. AFM1 was detected in all samples. In cow milk, 96.1% exceeded the EU limit (0.05 µg/kg), with concentrations ranging from 0.048 to 0.410 µg/kg (mean: 0.102 µg/kg), although none exceeded the Codex Alimentarius limit (0.50 µg/kg). Goat milk showed a lower prevalence of samples above the EU limit (36.4%), but higher concentrations were observed (range 0.030–0.578 µg/kg; mean 0.193 µg/kg), with two samples (18.2%) exceeding the Codex limit. PFAS contamination was generally low: 73.0% of cow and 64.0% of goat samples were below detection limits, with only PFBS (cow milk) and PFDA (goat milk) quantified above LOQ. Because of the limited number of farms and the single sampling period, no robust associations could be established between farm-level variables and contaminant concentrations. This preliminary study provides an exploratory overview of AFM1 and PFAS occurrence in bovine and goat bulk milk from the sampled Algerian farms. These findings reveal widespread AFM1 contamination within the investigated farms, consistent with possible feed-borne AFB1 exposure, whereas PFAS occurrence appeared sporadic and generally low. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of feedlot morbidity and mortality. Field diagnosis is often limited to visual examination as available diagnostics reflect individual animals only and require labor, animal restraint, and time. Aggregate sampling techniques are valuable tools in other species but are lacking in the beef industry. This pilot study investigates the plausibility of using the water trough as an aggregate sample substrate in pens of confined cattle. Water and swab substrates from ten water tanks were collected at ten sampling events. Samples were subjected to a multiplex PCR to detect viruses, bacteria, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes associated with BRD. Viral and bacterial PCR detections differed significantly among morbidity classes (Fisher’s exact p = 0.0139 water; p = 0.0222 swab). The overall kappa and Percent Positive Agreement were 0.72 and 84.01% among sample substrates. Bayesian latent class analysis was used to estimate the probability of detection. Viral and bacterial organisms reached peak sensitivity (21–79%) on days 4–21 and peak specificity (44–79%) on days 42–56. All AMR genes’ sensitivity and specificity remained relatively constant throughout the sampling period. Full article

Recently, the dairy sector has been ever more affected by global warming. This study aimed to test a novel conductive cooling system for cattle that was successfully implemented and evaluated under summer thermally challenging weather conditions in Poland. The system consists mainly of the chiller, tank, and chilled water-driven mattress, designed to prioritize animal well-being. The experimental evaluation was carried out on three Friesian dry cows, housed on different types of bedding—commercial water mattress, straw, and cooling water mattress—and supplied with water at 10 °C (day) and 16 °C (night). The cooling water mattress’ surface temperature was twice as low as that of the commercial water mattress. The animal’s thermal comfort was assessed with physiological and behavioral reactions. The cooling effect on animals’ bodies was demonstrated with a lower reticulorumen temperature of the cooled cow (p < 0.05) than the reference ones. The local effect of cooling was proved with an 8 °C-lower skin temperature after the cow’s resting period. The presented study opens a new research direction toward dairy cattle’s welfare, sustainability, and the food–energy–water nexus, based on potential energy and water savings. Full article

This study investigated the basement aquifer beneath the urbanised city of Niamey and the agricultural fields of Kollo, SW of Niger. During the observation period spanning from 2021 to 2023, groundwater and surface water samples were collected for analysis of major ions and the stable isotopes oxygen-18 and deuterium (δ18O and δ2H) of water. To trace the origin of high nitrate concentrations (NO3) found in several observation and drinking water wells in both areas, δ15N and δ18O isotope values of NO3 were analysed in groundwater and eluted soil samples. The observed hydrochemical patterns mainly reflect the heterogeneity of the weathered fringe of the basement aquifer. Decreasing concentrations of NO3 and δ18O and δ2H values were observed in relation to the distance of the Niger River and increasing thickness of the clay layer on the surface. The wells close to the river in Niamey show a dilution effect during the flood season, and the NO3 concentrations displayed a continuous increasing trend. The δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 values confirmed that septic tank water is spreading in the region of Niamey and that manure originating from livestock in Kollo is the main source of NO3. The patterns of δ15N in the soil samples coincide with those of cattle’s manure spread in both areas. The shallow wells show significantly higher values of electric conductivity and NO3 concentrations compared to the deeper wells, which clearly indicates the influence of shallow septic tanks on water quality. Aerial photogrammetry is increasingly being used to discover, document, and interpret the cultural heritage of landscapes. Information on the constructed cultural heritage left behind by the first cattle ranchers in the American West is being lost as the land is transformed and modified, and stewardship of the land changes across generations. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been used in this research to record and interpret two surface water cattle tanks constructed by Texas cowboys in the mid-1880s. Similar size rocks have been used and placed in a similar pattern across the walls of both tanks. This similarity suggests both tanks were constructed at the same time. This research also demonstrates that UAV photogrammetry can be used to rapidly record and analyze the constructed cultural heritage of American West cowboys. Full article

Natural aquatic sites are disappearing worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean region where amphibians are frequently forced to move for reproduction to artificial sites designed for irrigation and cattle watering (i.e., wells, tanks and drinking troughs). In artificial aquatic sites, where resources (space and food) are usually limited, trophic niche information can be particularly useful to infer the suitability of habitats for amphibian conservation especially when more than one species co-occurs. In this paper, we focused on three newt species: The Italian newt (Lissotriton italicus), the Italian smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris meridionalis) and the Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) inhabiting man-made wells widespread in an area in Central Italy characterized by few available natural aquatic sites. Specifically, we analyzed the trophic spectrum of the species, their interactions and overlap, and discussed the potential role of wells in amphibian conservation. Overall, 550 newt individuals occurring in 16 distinct wells were sampled. The study species consumed similar resources, mainly of aquatic origin, with Diptera larvae and Cladocera representing the most important preys. The high degree of diet overlap observed may be due to site oligotrophy and high availability of small-sized prey, and it does not necessarily lead to competition. Newts had similar narrow niche width values and a generalist feeding pattern with high diversity among individuals. Lissotriton italicus and T. carnifex showed wider niche width in isolation than in syntopy condition, probably as a result of interspecific competition and/or intraguild predation. We showed that artificial aquatic sites are important for newt ecology and conservation since they allow up to three species to cohabit, thus representing a good surrogate of natural habitats. The study wells apparently provided suitable trophic conditions for newts in terms of prey availability and catchability. To date, just a few studies have contributed to a greater understanding of newts’ diet in artificial aquatic sites and this gap of knowledge has to be filled to clarify their role in amphibian ecology and conservation.
