The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (TPB), (Palisot de Beauvois), and the western tarnished plant bug (WTPB), Lygus hesperus, Knight, are major agricultural pests that cause significant damage to a wide range of crops in the southeastern and southwestern United States. Flonicamid (commercial name: Carbine 50WG) is generally effective against various sap-feeding pests, including both L. hesperus and L. lineolaris. This study evaluated the toxicity of flonicamid on third-instar nymphs and adults of both Lygus species under laboratory conditions. Two bioassay methods were used: spray application to assess both contact and oral toxicity, and dipping to evaluate oral toxicity. Results showed that L. hesperus was significantly more susceptible to flonicamid than L. lineolaris across both bioassay methods. While no significant differences in toxicity were observed between spray and dipping assays, third-instar nymphs exhibited significantly higher sensitivity than adults in both species. The addition of piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a known inhibitor of cytochrome P450-monooxygenases (P450s), significantly enhanced the toxicity of flonicamid, suggesting that P450 enzyme plays a critical role in its detoxification. Sublethal exposure to flonicamid also induced increased P450 activity in both species. These findings provide valuable insights into the differences in susceptibility between L. lineolaris and L. hesperus to flonicamid and indicate that P450-mediated detoxification is critical for flonicamid metabolism. Such insights are valuable for early resistance monitoring and optimizing flonicamid application in integrated pest management programs. Full article

Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) is a promising material for sensor applications due to its unique nanoporous structure and high surface area. This study investigates enhancing AAO’s sensing capabilities by incorporating carbyne-enriched nanomaterials. This research aimed to create a novel surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor with improved performance characteristics. AAO films were fabricated using a two-step anodization process, followed by carbyne-enriched coating deposition via ion-assisted pulse-plasma deposition. The dielectric properties of the resulting composite material were characterized using impedance spectroscopy, while the sensing performance was evaluated by exposing the sensor to various ethanol concentrations. The results showed a significant increase in capacitance and dielectric permittivity for the carbyne-filled AAO compared to pristine AAO, along with a 5-fold improvement in sensitivity to ethanol vapor. The increased sensitivity is attributed to the synergistic combination of the AAO’s high surface area and the carbyne’s unique electrical properties. This work demonstrates the successful fabrication and characterization of a novel high-sensitivity gas sensor, highlighting the potential of carbyne-enriched AAO for advanced sensor applications. The silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky diode (SBD) detector in a SiC hybrid photomultiplier tube (HPMT) generates signals by receiving photocathode electrons with an energy of 10 keV. So, the performance of the SiC SBD under electron irradiation with an energy of 10 keV has an important significance for the application of the SiC-HPMT. However, studies on 10 keV radiation effects on the SiC SBDs were rarely reported. In this paper, the performance degradation of the SiC SBDs irradiated by 10 keV electrons at different fluences was investigated. After the irradiation, the forward current of the SiC SBDs increased, and the turn-on voltage decreased with the irradiation fluences until 1.6 × 1016 cm−2. According to the capacitance–voltage (C-V) curves, the effective doping concentration increased slightly after the irradiation, and an obvious discrepancy of C-V curves occurred below 5 V. Moreover, as a radiation detector, the peak position of the α-particles’ amplitude spectrum changed slightly, and the energy resolution was also slightly reduced after the irradiation due to the high collection charge efficiency (CCE) still being larger than 99.5%. In addition, the time response of the SiC SBD to the 50 ns pulsed X-ray was almost not affected by the irradiation. The results indicated that the performance degradation of the SiC SBD irradiated at the fluence of 1.5 × 1017 cm−2 would not result in a deterioration of the properties of the SiC-HPMT and showed an important significance for the supplement of the radiation resistance of the SiC SBD radiation detector. The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), consisting of deadlift, standing power throw, hand release push-up, sprint-drag-carry, leg tuck or plank, and 2-mile run, is the United States Army’s new fitness test. The ACFT is designed to measure multiple fitness components required to perform combat tasks. One critical task is the tactical foot march (TFM), where soldiers cover long distances while carrying loads comprised of mission-essential equipment. As the ACFT is meant to predict soldier task performance, determining the relationships between the ACFT and the TFM is important. Data from 29 cadets (♂ = 20, ♀ = 9) from one university Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program were analyzed. The ACFT was recorded in raw and scaled scores. The TFM was performed over 6.44 km, with time recorded. Cadets carried a 15.88-kg rucksack, fighting load carrier, 3-L hydration pack, and replica M4 carbine. Independent samples t-tests evaluated ACFT and TFM between-sex differences. Partial correlations, controlling for sex, determined ACFT event and TFM relationships. Male cadets outperformed females in all ACFT tasks (p ≤ 0.039), except the push-up. ACFT total score, leg tuck, 2-mile run, and sprint-drag-carry showed large correlations with the TFM (r = ±0.463–0.531, p ≤ 0.026). Aerobic and anaerobic capacity and upper body/trunk strength were important fitness components for cadet TFM performance. Full article

This study aims to analyze the performance of laminated glass against ballistic loading and investigates its residual load-bearing capacity. Two groups of specimens were used in quasi-static four-point bending experiments, first without prior ballistic damage and then with it. The main objective was to compare the load-bearing capacity of these two groups to see the effect of ballistic damage. Three different layer compositions were used. The ballistic loading was conducted using an in-service 9 mm bullet fired from a semiautomatic carbine with the glass specimens hanging on steel ropes in a free boundary setup. Numerical simulation and analytical methods were used and validated against the measured response of the undamaged specimens. The simulations were in good agreement with the experimental results. All of the glass specimens were able to withstand the ballistic loading, and the subsequent performance during the quasi-static bending loading was similar to that of the undamaged specimens. The quality of the glass edges seemed to be more important than ballistic damage. The front-plate damage played a negligible role, and the back-plate damage needed to be extensive to influence subsequent performance. Provided that ballistic damage is mainly localized only to the centers of the plates, it did not affect the post-impact loading capacity. Full article

Since 1 January 2020, the sulfur content allowed in exhaust gas plume generated by marine vessels decreased to 0.5% m/m. To be compliant, a hybrid scrubber was installed on-board, working in closed loop and generating a high volume of alkaline wastewater. The alkaline water suspension was treated by a silicon carbide multitubular membrane to remove pollutants, and to allow the water discharge into the natural environment. In this paper, membrane filtration behavior was analyzed for the maritime scrubber wastewater. A range of operating parameters were obtained for several feedwater quality-respecting industrial constraints. The objective was an improvement of (I) the water recovery rate, (II) the filtration duration, and (III) the permeate quality. Thus, in high-fouling water, a low permeate flow (60 L h−1 m−2) with frequent backflushing (every 20 min) was used to maintain membrane performance over time. In terms of water quality, the suspended solids and heavy metals were retained at more than 99% and 90%, respectively. Other seawater discharge criteria in terms of suspended solids concentration, pH, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons were validated. The recommended operating conditions from laboratory study at semi-industrial scale were then implemented on a vessel in real navigation conditions with results in agreement with expectations. Aphids are important pests of pecans. Traditionally, insecticides have been the primary method of management. However, over-reliance and non-judicious use has led to resistance and damage to natural enemy populations. Therefore, frequent assessment of insecticides is necessary in order to monitor resistance development and non-target impacts. Aphicides, flonicamid, sulfoxaflor, and afidopyropen were assessed for their effects on pecan aphids and parasitoid, Aphelinus perpallidus, in a mature pecan orchard in 2019 and 2020. Post-application assessments were performed 7, 14, and 21 days post-application. Leaf samples from non-treated trees had greater aphid numbers than treated trees 7 days post-application with differences diminishing throughout the other two treatment periods in 2019. In 2020, aphid numbers were lower but leaf samples from non-treated trees had more aphids than treated trees 7 days post-application in the lower canopy. These differences again diminished 14 and 21 days post-application. There was no difference among treatments in number of parasitoid adults or mummies. These findings indicate that pecan growers have multiple potential options available for aphid management that do not negatively impact the primary pecan aphid parasitoid. Implications of the results on pecan aphid management are discussed. Full article

The acyclic organic alkynes and carbyne bonds exhibit linear shapes. Metallabenzynes and metallapentalynes are six- or five-membered metallacycles containing carbynes, whose carbine-carbon bond angles are less than 180°. Such distortion results in considerable ring strain, resulting in the unprecedented reactivity compared with acyclic carbynes. Meanwhile, the aromaticity of these metallacycles would stabilize the ring system. The fascinating combination of ring strain and aromaticity would lead to interesting reactivities. This mini review summarized recent findings on the reactivity of the metal–carbon triple bonds and the aromatic ring system. In the case of metallabenzynes, aromaticity would prevail over ring strain. The reactions are similar to those of organic aromatics, especially in electrophilic reactions. Meanwhile, fragmentation of metallacarbynes might be observed via migratory insertion if the aromaticity of metallacarbynes is strongly affected. In the case of metallapentalynes, the extremely small bond angle would result in high reactivity of the carbyne moiety, which would undergo typical reactions for organic alkynes, including interaction with coinage metal complexes, electrophilic reactions, nucleophilic reactions and cycloaddition reactions, whereas the strong aromaticity ensured the integrity of the bicyclic framework of metallapentalynes throughout all reported reaction conditions. The direct C-H functionalization reaction is one of the most efficient strategies by which to introduce new functional groups into small organic molecules. Over time, iron complexes have emerged as versatile catalysts for carbine-transfer reactions with diazoalkanes under mild and sustainable reaction conditions. In this review, we discuss the advances that have been made using iron catalysts to perform C-H functionalization reactions with diazoalkanes. We give an overview of early examples employing stoichiometric iron carbene complexes and continue with recent advances in the C-H functionalization of C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H bonds, concluding with the latest developments in enzymatic C-H functionalization reactions using iron-heme-containing enzymes. Nevertheless, all of the reported germathioacid chlorides use bidentate nitrogen ligands and contain germanium-nitrogen bonds. Our group synthesized germathioacid chloride, Ge(S)Cl{C6H3-2,6-Tip2}(Im-i-Pr2Me2), using N-heterocyclic carbene (Im-i-Pr2Me2). As a result of density functional theory (DFT) calculation, it was found that electrons are localized on sulfur, and the germanium-sulfur bond is a single bond with a slight double bond property. A theoretical investigation of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism of rac-lactide (LA) with an yttrium complex featuring a N-heterocyclic carbine (NHC) tethered moiety is reported. It was found that the carbonyl of lactide is attacked by N(SiMe3)2 group rather than NHC species at the chain initiation step. The polymerization selectivity was further investigated via two consecutive insertions of lactide monomer molecules. The insertion of the second monomer in different assembly modes indicated that the steric interactions between the last enchained monomer unit and the incoming monomer together with the repulsion between the incoming monomer and the ligand framework are the primary factors determining the stereoselectivity. The interaction energy between the monomer and the metal center could also play an important role in the stereocontrol. Full article
