Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has the potential to characterize the size and composition of quantum dots (QDs). However, examples of its usage in the literature are limited. In this study, we perform an in-depth characterization of the size and composition of the CdSe QD system using a combination of MALDI MS and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Using these techniques, we determine the size and composition of a series of wurtzite and zincblende CdSe QDs. The composition ranges from 176 to 1202 CdSe units per QD. With this information, we construct a sizing curve for the QDs and compare it with sizing curves from the literature obtained using other techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). These results will be insightful for the community developing complex multilayer QD compositions for photonic applications. Full article

Thin-film solar cells (TFSCs) remain a cornerstone of the global transition toward renewable energy, characterized by consistent reductions in manufacturing costs and steady gains in power conversion efficiency. In addition to electricity generation, TFSCs play an important role in advanced solar thermal cooling, heating, and energy storage systems, where their tunable optical absorption, low thermal mass, and flexibility enable integration with photovoltaic–thermal (PV/T) collectors, thermally driven cooling cycles, and hybrid thermal–electrical storage architectures. This paper provides a comprehensive review of prominent TFSC technologies, including copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), cadmium telluride (CdTe/CdS), amorphous silicon (a-Si), copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), with a focus on their material structures, performance specifications, and current efficiency benchmarks. Compared to state-of-the-art reviews, this article distinguishes itself by addressing next-generation innovations, cross-domain solar thermal–photovoltaic applications, and economic analysis. Specifically, the integration of machine learning and simulation-based material dynamics is examined to accelerate material discovery, process optimization, and the characterization of novel TFPV components relevant to coupled thermal–electrical energy systems. Furthermore, the study explores how additive manufacturing is transforming the industry through the development of high-efficiency electrodes, electrohydrodynamic atomization for thin-film deposition, and the fabrication of flexible solar arrays suitable for thermally integrated and building-scale energy systems, including space applications. By integrating advancements in module efficiency, scalable manufacturing approaches, and techno-economic analysis, this paper positions TFSCs as sustainable, resource-abundant technologies essential for next-generation solar thermal cooling, heating, and energy storage infrastructures. CdSe-coated electrodes, formed by electrodeposition of CdSe barrier layers on metallic Ti or porous TiO2 substrates, were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a (photo)cell using aqueous redox electrolytes based on the sulfide/polysulfide or ferro/ferricyanide couples. The influence of electrode material properties, electrolyte contact, thermal annealing, and measurement conditions (illumination, frequency, potential-scan speed) on the shape and features of Mott–Schottky plots was investigated. The obtained information was evaluated on the basis of the ideal Schottky diode model and photocurrent voltammetry data. Deviations from linear diode behavior and uncertainties in the determination of energetic parameters were examined and attributed to the presence of donor density gradients and surface states in the semiconductor electrode, further complicated by chemical corrosion. The origin of the observed non-idealities is inquired, and specific aspects of the measuring procedure related to the non-stationary character of the interface are discussed. Full article

The rapid commercialization of next-generation photovoltaic (PV) technologies, particularly perovskite, thin-film roll-to-roll (R2R) architectures, and tandem devices, requires robust assessment of environmental performance at the level of industrial manufacturing processes. Environmental impacts can no longer be evaluated solely at the device or module level. Although many life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies compare silicon, cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), and perovskite technologies, most rely on aggregated indicators and database-level inventories. Few studies systematically compile and harmonize process-level life-cycle inventories (LCIs) for the manufacturing steps that differentiate emerging industrial routes, such as solution coating, R2R processing, atomic layer deposition, low-temperature annealing, and advanced encapsulation–metallization strategies. In addition, inconsistencies in functional units, system boundaries, electricity-mix assumptions, and scale-up modeling continue to limit meaningful cross-study comparison. To address these gaps, this review (i) compiles and critically analyzes process-resolved LCIs for innovative PV manufacturing routes across laboratory, pilot, and industrial scales; (ii) quantifies sensitivity to scale-up, yield, throughput, and electricity carbon intensity; and (iii) proposes standardized methodological rules and open-access LCI templates to improve reproducibility, comparability, and integration with techno-economic and prospective LCA models. The review also synthesizes current evidence on recycling, circularity, and critical-material management. It highlights that end-of-life (EoL) benefits for emerging PV technologies are highly conditional and remain less mature than for crystalline-silicon systems. By shifting the analytical focus from technology class to manufacturing process and life-cycle configuration, this work provides a harmonized evidence base to support scalable, circular, and low-carbon industrial pathways for next-generation PV technologies. Novel hybrid semiconducting thin films comprising CdSe with the addition of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were developed onto titanium substrates using a one-step electrocodeposition technique. The deposition took place using an acidic aqueous electrolytic bath containing hydrothermally produced ΝCDs under direct and pulse current regime. The specimens were studied using XRD, SEM-EDS, and UV-Vis spectroscopy techniques to determine their microstructural characteristics, surface morphology and composition and the energy gap, respectively. Their photochemical behavior was studied utilizing a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). Variations in physical properties, along with significantly improved photoelectrochemical responses, were observed for the NCD-infused semiconductive thin films compared to their plain CdSe counterparts. These variations were highly affected by the incorporation rate of the NCDs in each thin film, as well as the imposed electrolysis conditions. Full article

The integration of bioethanol into transportation fuels requires efficient purification methods to overcome the ethanol–water azeotrope, which cannot be separated by conventional distillation. Pervaporation has become an attractive alternative, offering high selectivity while minimising energy consumption. To further improve membrane performance, this study analyses sodium alginate-based hybrid membranes containing binary mixtures of chromite selenides with varying magnetic properties (ZnCr2Se4, CdCr2Se4, and CuCr2Se4). Pairwise combinations of these fillers were introduced to create complex magnetic structures that can influence polymer–filler interactions and molecular transport. Structural, magnetic, and functional characterisation showed that membrane properties were strongly dependent on the type and proportion of fillers. In particular, the CdCr2Se4 with CuCr2Se4 combination exhibited the most favourable balance between permeation flux and selectivity, achieving the highest parameters, including pervaporation separation index (PSI) reaching 747 kg·m−2·h−1. This superior performance is attributed to the synergistic interaction of these two magnetic fillers, which enhances membrane selectivity while maintaining its integrity. This work presents a novel approach to membrane-based separation, advancing the development of energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable bioethanol purification technologies. Full article

In this work, we report on the mechanochemical preparation and characterization of binary (CdS, CdSe, and CdTe) and ternary (CdS0.5Se0.5, CdS0.5Te0.5, and CdSe0.5Te0.5) cadmium chalcogenides. The compounds were synthesized in a [...] Read more.
In this work, we report on the mechanochemical preparation and characterization of binary (CdS, CdSe, and CdTe) and ternary (CdS0.5Se0.5, CdS0.5Te0.5, and CdSe0.5Te0.5) cadmium chalcogenides. The compounds were synthesized in a planetary micro mill using a zirconia grinding bowl and zirconia grinding balls. The products were examined by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV–Vis spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Interestingly, CdO formed as a by-product only during milling of Cd+S and Cd+Se in air, while it was absent in the Cd+Te and all ternary systems. The materials were obtained in the form of irregularly shaped aggregates measuring up to several hundred nanometers, composed of nearly spherical primary nanoparticles with diameters in the 10–20 nm range. The band gap energies calculated using Tauc plots for CdS0.5Se0.5, CdS0.5Te0.5, and CdSe0.5Te0.5 were 2.01 eV, 1.72 eV, and 1.53 eV, respectively. These results demonstrate the expected tunability of band gaps in ternary cadmium chalcogenides and attest to the potential of such materials for semiconducting applications, particularly in solar cells. The mechanochemical approach is once again shown to be a simple and effective method for the preparation of both binary and ternary chalcogenides, avoiding the use of solvents, toxic precursors, and energy-consuming reaction conditions. In this work, we developed a highly sensitive and reproducible electrochemiluminescent sensor based on a heterostructure of cadmium selenide quantum dots capped with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) + 3-morpholinoethanesulfonic acid (MES) (QDs CdSe) and carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4) for the detection of H2O2 in lyophilized serum samples. To enhance the sensor sensitivity, g-C3N4 nanosheets were utilized as a platform to immobilize the QDs CdSe. An exhaustive characterization of the heterostructure was conducted, elucidating the interaction mechanism between QDs CdSe and g-C3N4. It was revealed that g-C3N4 acts as a hole (h+) donor, while QDs CdSe act as energy acceptors in a resonance energy transfer process, with the electrochemiluminescence emission originating from the QDs CdSe. The electrochemiluminescence intensity decreases in the presence of H2O2 due to the deactivation of the excited states of the QDs CdSe. This electrochemiluminescent sensor demonstrates exceptional performance for detecting H2O2 in aqueous systems, achieving a remarkably low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.81 nM, which is more sensitive than most reported sensors to detect H2O2. The applicability of the sensor was successfully tested where sub-µM levels of H2O2 were accurately quantified. These results highlight the potential of this electrochemiluminescent sensor as a reliable and pre-treatment-free tool for H2O2 detection in biochemical studies and human health applications. The present study employed the spin-coating method for the preparation of nanostructured crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on FTO glass substrates. Subsequently, cadmium selenide (CdSe) layers were deposited on the surfaces using two distinct chemical methods: successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition (CBD). The obtained films were then characterized by a variety of analytical methods, including XRD, SEM, AFM, EDX spectroscopy, UV–vis spectrophotometry, and linear sweep voltammetry. The XRD and SEM studies demonstrated that all of the films exhibited a polycrystalline nature, with the crystallinity of the cadmium selenide thin films prepared using the SILAR method exceeding that obtained by the CBD method. The SEM and AFM images revealed the uniformity of the cadmium selenide films on the FTO substrates, with no visible cracks or pores. The EDX spectra confirmed the presence of the expected elements in the thin films. The optical band gaps (Eg) for CdSe prepared with the SILAR or CBD method were determined to be 1.85 and 1.97 eV, respectively. Full article

Thin-film solar cells (TFSCs) represent a promising frontier in renewable energy technologies due to their potential for cost reduction, material efficiency, and adaptability. This literature review examines the key materials and advancements that make up TFSC technologies, with a focus on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS), cadmium telluride (CdTe), and Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and its sulfo-selenide counterpart Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe). Each material’s unique properties—including tuneable bandgaps, high absorption coefficients, and low-cost scalability—make them viable candidates for a wide range of applications, from building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) to portable energy solutions. This review explores recent progress in the enhancement of power conversion efficiency (PCE), particularly through bandgap engineering, alkali metal doping, and interface optimization. Key innovations such as silver (Ag) alloying in CIGS, selenium (Se) alloying in CdTe, and sulfur (S) to Se ratio optimization in CZTSSe have driven PCE improvements and expanded the range of practical uses. Additionally, the adaptability of TFSCs for roll-to-roll manufacturing on flexible substrates has further cemented their role in advancing renewable energy adoption. Challenges remain, including environmental concerns, but ongoing research addresses these limitations, paving the way for TFSCs to become a crucial technology for transitioning to sustainable energy systems. Recently, the numerical simulation of solar cells has attracted tantamount scientific attention in the photovoltaic community because it saves on research time and resources before the actual fabrication of the devices in the laboratories. Despite significant advancements in the fabrication of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is still low when compared to other solar cells such as perovskite. This efficiency gap poses a substantial challenge in harnessing the full potential of QDSSCs for widespread adoption in renewable energy applications. Enhancing the efficiency of QDSSCs is imperative for their commercial viability and widespread deployment. In this work, SCAPS-1D was used in the simulation of QDSSCs. The solar cell with a general configuration of FTO/TiO2/PbS/HTL/Au was investigated. In the device, PbS quantum dots were inserted as the absorber layer, TiO2 as the electron transport layer (ETL), gold as the back contact, and the following inorganic materials, i.e., copper (I) iodide (CuI), copper (I) oxide (Cu2O), cadmium zinc telluride selenide (CZTSe), copper iron tin sulfide (CFTS), and copper zinc tin sulfide selenide (CZTSSe) were tested as HTL materials, and FTO acted as the conductive substrate. The best HTL material (CZTSSe) exhibited a PCE of 22.61%, with a fill factor (FF) of 84.67%, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.753 V, and a current density (Jsc) of 35.48 mA cm−2. This study contributes to the field by employing SCAPS-1D simulations to optimize QDSSCs, exploring novel inorganic HTL materials for these solar cells and identifying CZTSSe as a promising low-cost HTL that significantly enhances both the performance and commercial viability of QDSSCs. Abstract: Quantum dot–polymer composites have the advantages of high luminescent quantum yield (PLQY), narrow emission half-peak full width (FWHM), and tunable emission spectra, and have broad application prospects in display and lighting fields. Research on quantum dots embedded in polymer films and plates has made great progress in both synthesis technology and optical properties. However, due to the shortcomings of quantum dots, such as cadmium selenide (CdSe), indium phosphide (InP), lead halide perovskite (LHP), poor water, oxygen, and light stability, and incapacity for large-scale synthesis, their practical application is still restricted. Various polymers, such as methyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polypropylene (PP), etc., are widely used in packaging quantum dot materials because of their high plasticity, simple curing, high chemical stability, and good compatibility with quantum dot materials. This paper focuses on the application and development of quantum dot–polymer materials in the field of backlight displays, summarizes and expounds the synthesis strategies, advantages, and disadvantages of different quantum dot–polymer materials, provides inspiration for the optimization of quantum dot–polymer materials, and promotes their application in the field of wide-color-gamut backlight display. This study investigates the incorporation of thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) technologies in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and their contribution to sustainable architecture. The research focuses on three key TFPV materials: amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe), and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), examining their composition, efficiency, and BIPV applications. Recent advancements have yielded impressive results, with CdTe and CIGS achieving laboratory efficiencies of 22.10% and 23.35%, respectively. The study also explores the implementation of building energy management systems (BEMS) for optimizing energy use in BIPV-equipped buildings. Financial analysis indicates that despite 10.00–30.00% higher initial costs compared to conventional materials, BIPV systems can generate 50–150 kWh/m2 annually, with simple payback periods of 5–15 years. The research emphasizes the role of government incentives and innovative financing in promoting BIPV adoption. As BIPV technology progresses, it offers a promising solution for transforming buildings from energy consumers to producers, significantly contributing to sustainable urban development and climate change mitigation. Multi-junction solar cells are vital in developing reliable, green, sustainable solar cells. Consequently, the computational optimization of solar cell architecture has the potential to profoundly expedite the process of discovering high-efficiency solar cells. Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS)-based solar cells exhibit substantial performance compared to those utilizing cadmium sulfide (CdS). Likewise, CIGS-based devices are more efficient according to their device performance, environmentally benign nature, and thus, reduced cost. Therefore, the paper introduces an optimization process of three-layered n-CdS/p-CIGS/p-GaAs (NPP)) solar cell architecture based on thickness and carrier charge density. An in-depth investigation of the numerical analysis for homojunction PPN-junction with the ’GaAs’ layer structure along with n-ZnO front contact was simulated using the Solar Cells Capacitance Simulator (SCAPS-1D) software. Subsequently, various computational optimization techniques for evaluating the effect of the thickness and the carrier density on the performance of the PPN layer on solar cell architecture were examined. The electronic characteristics by adding the GaAs layer on the top of the conventional (PN) junction further led to optimized values of the power conversion efficiency (PCE), open-circuit voltage (VOC), fill factor (FF), and short-circuit current density (JSC) of the solar cell. Lastly, the paper concludes by highlighting the most promising results of our study, showcasing the impact of adding the GaAs layer. Hence, using the optimized values from the analysis, thickness of 5 (μm) and carrier density of 1×1020 (1/cm) resulted in the maximum PCE, VOC, FF, and JSC of 45.7%, 1.16 V, 89.52%, and 43.88 (mA/m2), respectively, for the proposed solar cell architecture. The outcomes of the study aim to pave the path for highly efficient, optimized, and robust multi-junction solar cells. Full article

Despite the promising applications of the use of quantum dots (QDs) in the biomedical field, the long-lasting effects of QDs on the cell remain poorly understood. To comprehend the mechanisms underlying the toxic effects of QDs in yeast, we characterized defects associated with receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME) as well as pinocytosis using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model in the presence of cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) QDs. Our findings revealed that QDs led to an inefficient RME at the early, intermediate, and late stages of endocytic patch maturation at the endocytic site, with the prolonged lifespan of GFP fused yeast fimbrin (Sac6-GFP), a late marker of endocytosis. The transit of FM1-43, a lipophilic dye from the plasma membrane to the vacuole, was severely retarded in the presence of QDs. Finally, QDs caused an accumulation of monomeric red fluorescent protein fused carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (mRFP-Cps1), a vacuolar lumen marker in the vacuole. In summary, the present study provides novel insights into the possible impact of CdSe/ZnS QDs on the endocytic machinery, enabling a deeper comprehension of QD toxicity. Full article
