From Abstraction to Realization: A Diagrammatic BIM Framework for Conceptual Design in Architectural Education

The conceptual design phase in architecture establishes the foundation for subsequent design decisions and influences up to 80% of a building’s lifecycle environmental impact. While Building Information Modeling (BIM) demonstrates transformative potential for sustainable design, its application during conceptual design remains constrained by perceived technical complexity and limited support for abstract thinking. This research examines how BIM tools can facilitate conceptual design through diagrammatic reasoning, thereby bridging technical capabilities with creative exploration. A mixed-methods approach was employed to develop and validate a Diagrammatic BIM (D-BIM) framework. It integrates diagrammatic reasoning, parametric modeling, and performance evaluation within BIM environments. The framework defines three core relationships—dissection, articulation, and actualization—which enable transitions from abstract concepts to detailed architectural forms in Revit’s modeling environments. Using Richard Meier’s architectural language as a structured test case, a 14-week quasi-experimental study with 19 third-year architecture students assessed the framework’s effectiveness through pre- and post-surveys, observations, and artifact analysis. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements (p < 0.05) with moderate to large effect sizes across all measures, including systematic design thinking, diagram utilization, and academic self-efficacy. Students demonstrated enhanced design iteration, abstraction-to-realization transitions, and performance-informed decision-making through quantitative and qualitative assessments during early design stages. However, the study’s limitations include a small, single-institution sample, the absence of a control group, a focus on a single architectural language, and the exploratory integration of environmental analysis tools. Findings indicate that the framework repositions BIM as a cognitive design environment that supports creative ideation while integrating structured design logic and performance analysis. The study advances Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by embedding critical, systems-based, and problem-solving competencies, demonstrating BIM’s role in sustainability-focused early design. This research provides preliminary evidence that conceptual design and BIM are compatible when supported with diagrammatic reasoning, offering a foundation for integrating competency-based digital pedagogy that bridges creative and technical dimensions of architectural design. This article presents a compact tip-tilting platform designed for hardware-in-the-loop emulation of spacecraft relative dynamics and a physical setup for testing tethered systems. The architecture consists of a granite slab supported by a universal joint and two linear actuators to control its orientation. This configuration allows a Floating Spacecraft Simulator to move on the surface in a quasi-frictionless environment under the effect of gravitational acceleration. The architecture includes a dedicated setup to emulate tethered satellite dynamics, providing continuous feedback on the tension along the tether through a mono-axial load cell. By adopting the Buckingham “π” theorem, the dynamic similarity is introduced for the ground-based experiment to reproduce the orbital dynamics. Proof-of-concept results demonstrate the testbed’s capability to accurately reproduce the Hill–Clohessy–Wiltshire equations. Moreover, the results of the deployed tethered system dynamics are presented. In this study, a novel comparison between single phase 7-Level Packed U—Cell (PUC) inverter and single phase 9-Level Cross Switches Cell (CSC) inverter with Model Predictive Controller (MPC) for solar grid-tied applications is presented. Our innovation introduces a unique approach by integrating PV solar panels in PUC and CSC inverters in their two DC links rather than just one which increases power density of the system. Another key benefit for the proposed models lies in their simplified design, offering improved power quality and reduced complexity relative to traditional configurations. Moreover, both models feature streamlined control architectures that eliminate the need for additional controllers such as PI controllers for grid reference current extraction. Furthermore, the implementation of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology directly optimizes power output from the PV panels, negating the necessity for a DC-DC booster converter during integration. To validate the proposed concept’s performance for both inverters, extensive simulations were conducted using MATLAB/Simulink, assessing both inverters under steady-state conditions as well as various disturbances to evaluate its robustness and dynamic response. Both inverters exhibit robustness against variations in grid voltage, phase shift, and irradiation. By comparing both inverters, results demonstrate that the CSC inverter exhibits superior performance due to its booster feature which relies on generating voltage level greater than the DC input source. This primary advantage makes CSC a booster inverter. Full article

A bias-free antenna tuning technique that eliminates conventional DC biasing networks is presented. The tuning mechanism is based on a Light-Dependent Resistor (LDR) embedded within the antenna structure. Optical illumination is used to modulate the LDR’s resistance, thereby altering the antenna’s effective electrical length and enabling tuning of its resonant frequency and operating bands. By removing the need for bias lines, RF chokes, blocking capacitors, and control circuitry, the proposed approach minimizes parasitic effects, losses, biasing energy, and routing complexity. This makes it particularly suitable for compact and energy-constrained platforms, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices. As proof of concept, an LDR is integrated into a ring monopole antenna, achieving tri-band operation in both high and low resistance states. In the high-resistance (OFF) state, the fabricated prototype operates across 2.1–3.1 GHz, 3.5–4 GHz, and 5–7 GHz. In the low-resistance (ON) state, the LDR bridges the two arcs of the monopole, extending the current path and shifting the lowest band to 1.36–2.35 GHz, with only minor changes to the mid and upper bands. The antenna maintains linear polarization across all bands and switching states, with measured gains reaching up to 5.3 dBi. Owing to its compact, bias-free, and low-cost architecture, the proposed design is well-suited for integration into portable wireless devices, low-power IoT nodes, and rapidly deployable communications systems where electrical biasing is impractical. With the increasing depth of research on built environments, theories of restorative environments and concepts of biophilic design have garnered widespread attention in the field of architecture. Based on Attention Restoration Theory (ART) and Flow Theory, this study systematically investigates how the architectural environment of aquatic centers influences users’ learning engagement in sports through psychological mechanisms. Analysis of cross-sectional data from 865 users revealed that all four core dimensions of restorative environments (being away, extent, fascination, and compatibility) significantly positively affect users’ learning engagement in aquatic centers. Psychological flow was found to mediate the relationship between these restorative dimensions and learning engagement. Building on previous research, this study constructs a theoretical framework of “restorative design–flow experience–learning behavior”, integrating the architectural features of aquatic centers with users’ psychological experiences. This approach addresses the gap in existing research where architectural elements and user psychological experiences have been studied in isolation, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing user experience through environmental interventions in sports architecture. The findings extend the application of environmental psychology in sports architecture and offer practical guidance for designing aquatic environments that promote learning engagement. Full article

In the second half of the twentieth century, the concept of indeterminacy in architecture emerged to address the realities of chance and change, with the megastructure representing a critical point of this ambition. As the aims of indeterminate architectural approaches align with current sustainable development goals, this study hypothesises this design concept as the basis for the sustainability of structures built within its framework. Through a case study of Spens, a socialist megastructure in Novi Sad, Serbia, the paper explores the potentials of megastructures in relation to requirements for more sustainable cities. Firstly, it evaluates Spens’ current social sustainability through focus group discussions analysing sense of community, place, and wellbeing. Findings demonstrate a clear recognition of Spens’ spatial qualities among users. Secondly, the paper examines the future environmental sustainability of Spens, focusing on strategies that enhance user wellbeing and urban life as a point of overlap between social and environmental sustainability, using the Green Space Factor (GSF) and Urban Greening Factor (UFG). Results reveal the significant yet underutilised potential for greening. The paper highlights the long-term societal value of such structures and strategies for leveraging their concepts for their sustainable adaptation rather than replacement amid ongoing retrofit or replacement debates. ADHD and misophonia are developmental neurological disorders that are currently increasing in prevalence due to excessive acoustic and visual pollution. ADHD, which is characterized by a lack of attention and excessive impulsive hyperactivity, and misophonia, which is hypersensitivity to sounds accompanied by a severe emotional and psychological reaction, are both affected by the user’s spatial environment to a great extent. Spatial design can contribute to increasing or decreasing these unfavorable sensory triggers that affect individuals with ADHD and/or Misophonia. However, the role of architectural spatial design as a therapeutic approach to alleviate the symptoms of Misophonia and ADHD has never been proposed before in the literature, despite its accumulative and chronic effects on the user’s experience in everyday life in terms of well-being and productivity. Therefore, the current work discusses this problem of neglecting the potential effect of architectural spatial design on alleviating Misophonia and ADHD. Thus, the objective of the current work is to propose customized architectural spatial design as a therapeutic approach to alleviate Misophonia and ADHD through adopting the compatible architectural trends of minimal and metaphysical architecture. The methodology of the current work includes a theoretical proposal of this customized architectural spatial design for alleviating these two special neurological conditions. This includes introducing and analyzing these two neurological conditions and their relation to and interaction with architectural spatial design, analyzing minimal and metaphysical architectural trends employed in the proposed therapeutic architectural design, and then proposing augmented and virtual reality as auxiliary add-ons to the architectural spatial design to boost its therapeutic effect. Minimal architecture achieves the “no emotion” criteria through reduced forms, patterns, and colors and adopts simple geometry and natural materials to reduce sensory stressors or stimuli, in order to alleviate the loss of attention and distraction prevalent in those with ADHD, as well as allowing the employment of acoustic materials to achieve acoustic comfort and noise blockage for Misophonia relief. Metaphysical architecture leads the hierarchy of sensory experience through the symbolistic, dynamic, and enigmatic composition of forms and colors, which enhance the spatial analysis and cognitive capacities of the inhabitants. Meanwhile, the use of customized virtual and augmented reality environments is an effective add-on to minimal and metaphysical architectural spaces thanks to its proven therapeutic effect in alleviating various neurological disorders and injuries. At this level of intervention, VR/AR can be used as an add-on to minimal-architecture design, to simulate varied scenarios, as minimal design offers a clean canvas for simulating these varied virtual environments. The other option is to build these customized VR/AR scenarios around a specific architectural element as an add-on metaphysical architecture design to lead the sensory experience and enable the user to detach from the physical constraints of the space. AI-generated designs were used as a proof of concept for the proposed customized architectural spatial design following minimal and metaphysical architecture, as well as to provide AR and VR scenarios as add-on architecture to enhance the therapeutic effect of these architectural spaces for Misophonia and ADHD patients. Furthermore, the validity of VR/AR as a therapeutic approach, alongside the customized architectural design, was discussed, and it was concluded that this study proves the need for extended clinical studies on its efficiency in the long run, which will be conducted in the future. This study addresses a documented gap in detailed, cost-effective, and performance-validated electric vehicle (EV) powertrain solutions. It presents the complete design, construction, and simulation-based validation of a high-efficiency electric powertrain for a Shell Eco-marathon Urban Concept vehicle. Novel contributions of this work include a unique drivetrain architecture: a BLDC motor with a modular two-stage chain drive and a custom lithium-ion battery pack. The design is optimized for compactness and reliability under stringent budget and packaging constraints. A comprehensive Simulink-based vehicle dynamics model was developed for robust validation. This model enabled the estimation of energy consumption, torque profiles, and battery State of Charge under realistic drive cycles. The system demonstrated a remarkably low energy consumption under competition conditions, signifying high efficiency with <50 Wh/km consumption and full compliance with technical regulations. Furthermore, the hardware is thoroughly documented with detailed build instructions, CAD models, and a full bill of materials. This promotes reproducibility. This research offers a validated, low-cost, and replicable electric powertrain. It provides a transferable framework for future Shell Eco-marathon teams and advances lightweight, cost-effective solutions for real-world low-speed electric mobility applications, such as micro-EVs and urban delivery vehicles. This review explores recent advancements in morphing structures for Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAVs), focusing on mechanical designs and control strategies of quadrotors that enable real-time geometric reconfiguration. Morphing mechanisms, ranging from closed-loop linkages to bioinspired and compliant structures, are evaluated in terms of adaptability, actuation simplicity, and flight stability. Control approaches, including model predictive control, reinforcement learning, and sliding mode control, are analyzed for their effectiveness in handling dynamic morphology. The review also highlights key morphing wing concepts such as GNATSpar and Zigzag Wingbox, which enhance aerodynamic efficiency and structural flexibility. A novel concept featuring an inverted slider-crank mechanism (ISCM) is introduced, enabling dual-mode UAV operation for both aerial and terrestrial missions, which is particularly useful in scenarios like wildfire suppression where stability and operation longevity are crucial. This study emphasizes the importance of integrated design approaches that align mechanical transformation with adaptive control. Critical gaps in real-world testing, swarm coordination, and scalable morphing architectures are identified, suggesting future research directions for developing robust, mission-adaptive UAV systems. A novel architectural design is proposed to optimize the thermal management of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) through a software-enabled switching mechanism. This approach addresses critical challenges such as hot-spot generation, peak temperature rise, and uneven thermal distribution—issues commonly observed in conventional single-terminal battery modules (STBMs). The proposed dual-terminal configuration integrates an enhanced battery pack structure with a software-enabled switching algorithm that identifies the 50% depth of discharge (DoD) and toggles the current path between two terminals to supply the load. Correspondingly, the module also incorporates the division of four thermal zones and four regions concept in the battery module (BM). Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed model at five different C-rates: 0.5C, 0.75C, 1C, 1.25C, and 1.5C. The results demonstrate that the software-enabled dual-terminal switching (Se-DTS) consistently outperforms the STBM across three key aspects. First, in terms of peak temperature, Se-DTS achieved reductions of 19.33%, 17.83%, and 12.72% at C-rates of 1C, 1.25C, and 1.5C, respectively. Second, in thermal distribution, Se-DTS improved performance, with an 86.1% reduction at 1.25C. Third, regarding hot-spot reduction, improvements of 100% (regional level) and 72.22% (zonal level) were observed at 1.25C, while at 1.5C, an 80% improvement was achieved at the zonal level, without using a cooling system. The successful integration of Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (T/NTNs) in 6G is poised to revolutionize demanding domains like Earth Observation (EO) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). Still, it requires Distributed Machine Learning (DML) frameworks that are scalable, private, and efficient. Existing methods, such as Federated Learning (FL) and Split Learning (SL), face critical limitations in terms of client computation burden and latency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel hierarchical DML paradigm. We first introduce Federated Split Transfer Learning (FSTL), a foundational framework that synergizes FL, SL, and Transfer Learning (TL) to enable efficient, privacy-preserving learning within a single client group. We then extend this concept to the Generalized FSTL (GFSTL) framework, a scalable, multi-group architecture designed for complex and large-scale networks. GFSTL orchestrates parallel training across multiple client groups managed by intermediate servers (RSUs/HAPs) and aggregates them at a higher-level central server, significantly enhancing performance. We apply this framework to a unified T/NTN architecture that seamlessly integrates vehicular, aerial, and satellite assets, enabling advanced applications in 6G ITS and EO. Comprehensive simulations using the YOLOv5 model on the Cityscapes dataset validate our approach. The results show that GFSTL not only achieves faster convergence and higher detection accuracy but also substantially reduces communication overhead compared to baseline FL, and critically, both detection accuracy and end-to-end latency remain essentially invariant as the number of participating users grows, making GFSTL especially well suited for large-scale heterogeneous 6G ITS deployments. We also provide a formal latency decomposition and analysis that explains this scaling behavior. This work establishes GFSTL as a robust and practical solution for enabling the intelligent, connected, and resilient ecosystems required for next-generation transportation and environmental monitoring. As the core spatial carriers for teaching, research, and academic exchange, university campuses have long been central subjects in architectural design research. As a distinct phenotypic type of university campus, the grid-type campus has gradually gained academic attention due to its modular characteristics, horizontal expandability, and flexible organization—with advantages including improved spatial efficiency, enhanced interdisciplinary interaction, and stronger adaptability. In this study, a typological analysis was performed on 23 representative global grid-type campuses to explore their planning concepts and module selection criteria. Research data were collected from literature reviews, architectural drawings, and Google Maps (Web) satellite images and visualized and analyzed using Origin Pro 2021. Results show that campus module selection is primarily influenced by three factors: walking distance, functional requirements, and structural systems. At the master planning level, module selection aligns with the “five-minute walking radius” standard, and campus scale is generally controlled within 500 × 350 m. At the architectural level, functional needs determine that module sizes typically range from 50–90 m or 7.2–10 m. At the structural level, module ranges are usually 7–18 m, depending on usage requirements and structural systems. This study’s findings can provide theoretical support and practical references for the planning, design, and module selection of future grid-type university campuses. Full article

The paper presents AgriMicro, a modern Farm Management Information System (FMIS) designed to help farmers monitor and optimize corn crops from sowing to harvest, by leveraging cloud technologies and machine learning algorithms. The platform is built on a modular architecture composed of multiple components implemented through microservices such as the weather and soil service, recommendation and alert engine, field service, and crop service—which continuously communicate to centralize field data and provide real-time insights. Through the ongoing exchange of data between these services, different information pieces about soil conditions, crop health, and agricultural operations are processed and analyzed, resulting in predictions of crop evolution and practical recommendations for future interventions (e.g., fertilization or irrigation). This integrated FMIS transforms collected data into concrete actions, supporting farmers and agricultural consultants in making informed decisions, improving field productivity, and ensuring more efficient resource use. Its microservice-based architecture provides scalability, modularity, and straightforward integration with other information systems. The objectives of this study are threefold. First, to specify and design a modular FMIS architecture based on microservices and cloud computing, ensuring scalability, interoperability and adaptability to different farm contexts. Second, to prototype and integrate initial components and Internet of Things (IoT)-based data collection with machine learning models, specifically Random Forest and XGBoost, to provide maize yield forecasting as a proof of concept. Model performance was evaluated using standard predictive accuracy metrics, including the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE), confirming the reliability of the forecasting pipeline and validated against official harvest data (average maize yield) from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics (INS) for 2024. These results confirm the reliability of the forecasting pipeline under controlled conditions; however, in real-world practice, broader regional and inter-annual variability typically results in considerably higher errors, often on the order of 10–20%. Third, to present a Romania based case study which illustrates the end-to-end workflow and outlines an implementation roadmap toward full deployment. As this is a design-oriented study currently under development, several services remain at the planning or early prototyping stage, and comprehensive system level benchmarks are deferred to future work. When Planes Fly Better than Birds: Should AIs Think like Humans?

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems continue to outperform humans in an increasing range of specialised tasks, a fundamental question emerges at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and engineering: should we aim to build AIs that think like humans, or should we embrace non-human-like architectures that may be more efficient or powerful, even if they diverge radically from biological intelligence? This paper draws on a compelling analogy from the history of aviation: the fact that aeroplanes, while inspired by birds, do not fly like birds. Instead of flapping wings or mimicking avian anatomy, engineers developed fixed-wing aircraft governed by aerodynamic principles that enabled superior performance. This decoupling of function from the biological form invites us to ask whether intelligence, like flight, can be achieved without replicating the mechanisms of the human brain. We explore this analogy through three main lenses. First, we consider the philosophical implications: What does it mean for an entity to be intelligent if it does not share our cognitive processes? Can we meaningfully compare different forms of intelligence across radically different substrates? Second, we examine engineering trade-offs in building AIs modelled on human cognition (e.g., through neural–symbolic systems or cognitive architectures) versus those designed for performance alone (e.g., deep learning models). Finally, we explore the ethical consequences of diverging from human-like thinking in AI systems. If AIs do not think like us, how can we ensure alignment, predictability, and shared moral frameworks? By critically evaluating these questions, this paper advocates for a pragmatic and pluralistic approach to AI design: one that values human-like understanding where it is useful (e.g., for interpretability or human–AI interaction) but also recognises the potential of novel architectures unconstrained by biological precedent. Intelligence may ultimately be a broader concept than the human example suggests, and embracing this plurality may be key to building robust and beneficial AI systems. Full article

Large language models (LLMs) such as Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) are increasingly used across domains, yet their generic training data and propensity for hallucination limit reliability in safety-critical fields like forestry. This paper outlines the conception and prototype of ForestGPT, a domain-specialised assistant designed to support forest professionals while preserving expert oversight. It addresses two looming risks: unverified adoption of generic outputs and professional mistrust of opaque algorithms. We propose a four-level development path: (1) pre-training a transformer on curated forestry literature to create a baseline conversational tool; (2) augmenting it with Retrieval-Augmented Generation to ground answers in local and time-sensitive documents; (3) coupling growth simulators for scenario modeling; and (4) integrating continuous streams from sensors, drones and machinery for real-time decision support. A Level-1 prototype, deployed at Futa Expo 2025 via a mobile app, successfully guided multilingual visitors and demonstrated the feasibility of lightweight fine-tuning on open-weight checkpoints. We analyse technical challenges, multimodal grounding, continual learning, safety certification, and social barriers including data sovereignty, bias and change management. Results indicate that trustworthy, explainable, and accessible LLMs can accelerate the transition to Forestry 5.0, provided that human-in-the-loop guardrails remain central. Future work will extend ForestGPT with full RAG pipelines, simulator coupling and autonomous data ingestion. Whilst exemplified in forestry, a complex, safety-critical, and ecologically vital domain, the proposed architecture and development path are broadly transferable to other sectors that demand trustworthy, domain-specific language models under expert oversight.
