Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a widespread shift to remote work, significantly altering child supervision. In Australia, prolonged lockdowns created unique conditions where many parents were working from home while simultaneously caring for children. This study aimed to investigate potential changes in the epidemiology of paediatric injury-related presentations to emergency health services among children in Southwest Victoria, Australia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using deidentified emergency presentation data from ten health services in regional Victoria for children aged 0–14 years between 2018 and 2023. Injury data were analysed across three timeframes (Pre-COVID, COVID, Post-COVID). Chi-squared tests assessed differences in injury presentations by age, gender, and service type. Significance was determined at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 21,072 child injury-related presentations occurred. Males accounted for 57.6% of presentations, with the 10–14 age group comprising 39.8% of cases. During lockdown, injury presentations increased among 0–4-year-old females (from 30.2% to 32.0%), likely reflecting reduced supervision as parents juggled work-from-home responsibilities. Conversely, rates declined among older children, particularly 10–14-year-olds, potentially due to reduced participation in sports and outdoor activities. More than half of all cases (59.1%) were presented to Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD)-reporting emergency departments. Conclusions: The shift to working from home during the pandemic had a measurable impact on childhood injury patterns, particularly among younger children. These findings highlight the importance of considering parental work and childcare arrangements in injury prevention strategies and highlight the benefits of additional regional data to provide a more accurate picture of regional health service use. Building a causal-loop diagram (CLD) is central to system-dynamics modeling but demands domain insight, the mastery of CLD notation, and the ability to juggle AI, mathematical, and execution tools. Pipeline Algebra (PA) reduces that burden by treating each step—LLM prompting, symbolic or numeric computation, algorithmic transforms, and cloud execution—as a typed, idempotent operator in one algebraic expression. Operators are intrinsically idempotent (implemented through memoization), so every intermediate result is re-used verbatim, yielding bit-level reproducibility even when individual components are stochastic. Unlike DAG (directed acyclic graph) frameworks such as Airflow or Snakemake, which force analysts to wire heterogeneous APIs together with glue code, PA’s compact notation lets them think in the problem space, rather than in workflow plumbing—echoing Iverson’s dictum that “notation is a tool of thought.” We demonstrated PA on a peer-reviewed study of novel-energy commercialization. Starting only from the article’s abstract, an AI-extracted problem statement, and an AI-assisted web search, PA produced an initial CLD. A senior system-dynamics practitioner identified two shortcomings: missing best-practice patterns and lingering dependence on the problem statement. A one-hour rewrite that embedded best-practice rules, used iterative prompting, and removed the problem statement yielded a diagram that conformed to accepted conventions and better captured the system. The results suggest that earlier gaps were implementation artifacts, not flaws in PA’s design; quantitative validation will be the subject of future work. Full article

Background/Objectives: Lucid dreaming (LD), during which the dreamer becomes aware of the dream state, offers a unique opportunity for a variety of applications, including motor practice, personal well-being, and nightmare therapy. However, these applications largely depend on the dreamer’s ability to control their dreams. While LD research has traditionally focused on induction techniques to increase dream frequency, the equally important skill of dream control remains largely underexplored. This study provides an exploration into the mechanisms of LD motor practice, dream control, and its potential influencing factors. We specifically examined whether a complex motor skill—juggling—could be performed during LD, calling for relatively high levels of dream control and access to procedural memory. Methods: Four healthy participants underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG), provided detailed dream reports, and completed questionnaires assessing dream control and self-efficacy. Dream-task success was assessed using predefined in-dream motor performance criteria. Differences between high and low LD control participants were examined, and two detailed case reports of lucid dream juggling attempts provide insight into the challenges of executing complex motor tasks during LD. Results: Dream control varied between and within participants. Both dream control and self-efficacy seemed to predict participants’ ability to execute the LD motor task. Conclusions: Despite the low sample size, this study highlights the potential roles of individual traits like self-efficacy in shaping dream control abilities and motor performance during LD. By using empirical, task-based measures, this study helps build the foundation for future research aimed at optimizing LD applications in clinical and non-clinical fields. Full article

Distance learning offers enhanced flexibility and reduced access restrictions, making it increasingly popular among non-traditional students and those juggling academic studies with professional and family obligations. This study explored the associations between study demands and resources (decision latitude and social support from lecturers and peers) and different study outcomes by applying the Job Demands-Resources Model in a distance learning context. Based on the model’s assumptions, we hypothesized that academic demands negatively predict study success in distance learning, while decision latitude and social support from lecturers and peers positively affect it. These associations were expected to be mediated by emotional exhaustion and different dimensions of engagement. The cross-sectional online study involved 286 psychology students from a German distance university. The multivariate path model revealed an association of demands and decision latitude with perceptions of competence and study satisfaction. While demands were significantly correlated with the grade point average, decision latitude was not. Consistent with the model’s assumptions, these effects were partially mediated by exhaustion and engagement. We did not find significant incremental associations of social support with the outcomes. The findings concerning measures to support students in distance education were discussed. Full article

Background and Objectives: Stroke units rely on interdisciplinary teams. Professionals with complementary alternative practices may join the team since such approaches are increasingly supporting the stroke recovery process. The aim of this study was to develop a better understanding of how a dance and somatic-informed movement intervention could be utilized in an inpatient setting as an adjunct to post-stroke therapy. We sought to identify (1) what knowledge we could draw on to develop the content and pedagogy for the intervention, (2) what helped/hindered the intervention aimed at functional recovery, as perceived by the practitioner-researchers, and (3) the relationships experienced with the various stakeholders. Materials and Methods: This exploratory qualitative study used the enhanced critical incident technique to collect retrospective self-report data from two practitioner-researchers engaged in delivering the intervention over two months. The data underwent thematic analysis. Patients (n = 6) in a stroke unit were selected within ≤72 h of hospital admission. The intervention was conducted four to six times a week until the vascular neurologist (co-researcher) authorized their transfer to a rehabilitation hospital. Results: The intervention evolved from crafting content and pedagogy at the intersection of different areas of knowledge (dance, somatics, neuroscience, and stroke). It was based on active, assisted, and passive movements. Verbal, tactile, visual, and imaginary inputs used to enhance body awareness were perceived as potentially helping patients recover some range of motion, quality of movements, and voluntary movement control, and fostering calmness and motivation. The intervention was well received by stakeholders. Conclusions: Dance and somatic-informed movement can be a complementary therapy in stroke units, although it requires a delicate juggling of time allocation within the interdisciplinary team. Further studies should be conducted with a larger number of patients and different practitioners. Collaboration between qualitative and quantitative researchers is needed to make a robust case for such interventions. Full article

In this piece, we approach graffiti from the perspective of the ‘circuits of valorization’ that qualify as well as quantify it. We understand a valorization circuit as an assemblage of cultural, legal, economic and geographic dynamics surrounding a given artefact, which eventually confer a certain ‘value’ to it. Here, we look at examples of global graffiti, with attention to how cities and administrations juggle with its controversial valorization, implementing various policies to rein it in, but also to exploit it. Typically, graffiti appears and lives in ill-defined, metamorphic urban spaces: as an urban artefact, graffiti occupies loose, interstitial places and rhymes with an aesthetic of defacement and infestation. The ‘in place/out of place’ dialectic is thus central for claims to legitimacy, legality, and, ultimately, also the ‘quality’ of graffiti. Through the lens of radical legal pluralism, we argue that graffiti can insert a distinctive dynamism into the lawscape, rather than be a sheer inert object of urban policies. Graffiti itself actively participates, not simply in populating the lawscape, but in its actual crafting. Full article

This research presents a novel framework and experimental results that combine zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) with private blockchain technology to safeguard whistleblower privacy while ensuring secure digital evidence submission and verification. For example, whistleblowers involved in corporate fraud cases can submit sensitive financial records anonymously while maintaining the credibility of the evidence. The proposed framework introduces several key innovations, including a private blockchain implementation utilising proof-of-work (PoW) consensus to ensure immutable storage and thorough scrutiny of submitted evidence, with mining difficulty dynamically aligned to the sensitivity of the data. It also features an adaptive difficulty mechanism that automatically adjusts computational requirements based on the sensitivity of the evidence, providing tailored protection levels. In addition, a unique two-phase validation process is incorporated, which generates a digital signature from the evidence alongside random challenges, significantly improving security and authenticity. The integration of ZKPs enables iterative hash-based verification between parties (Prover and Verifier) while maintaining the complete privacy of the source data. This research investigates the whistleblower’s niche in traditional digital evidence management systems (DEMSs), prioritising privacy without compromising evidence integrity. Experimental results demonstrate the framework’s effectiveness in preserving anonymity while assuring the authenticity of the evidence, making it useful for judicial systems and organisations handling sensitive disclosures. This paper signifies notable progress in secure whistleblowing systems, offering a way to juggle transparency with informant confidentiality. Full article

Background: Parents supporting AYAs with blood cancer juggle dual, competing roles as cancer caregiver and parent, which may heighten distress as they feel pulled simultaneously in two opposing directions. Likewise, AYAs encounter paradoxical needs as they revert to being more dependent on their parents to prioritize their survival while their developmental trajectory toward independence is disrupted. Parents need help understanding the underlying tensions they face in caregiving to reduce their distress and promote their connectedness with their AYA. Using a dialectical lens, we identified tensions parents encountered while caregiving in three contexts (clinical, family, and online communication) to inform a targeted psychosocial intervention. Methods: In partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we recruited 20 parents for in-depth interviews. Parents cared for adolescents aged 15–18 (n = 10) or emerging adults aged 19–29 (n = 10) diagnosed >3 months prior and in active treatment or within 2 years since treatment ended. Transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results: Parents described four ongoing tensions they needed to negotiate as they cared for their AYA: (1) being the driver versus passenger in their child’s care; (2) coping with cancer together as a family versus separately; (3) deciding to reveal versus conceal information; and (4) expecting normative developmental and disease trajectories versus disrupted trajectories. These tensions characterize the complex caregiving “dance” parents navigate in all three care contexts. Conclusions: Psychosocial education can normalize these tensions for parents to promote healthier coping and reduce distress while enhancing connectedness with their AYA. As caregiver–patient outcomes are interrelated, it may improve AYAs’ well-being. Full article

Ethnomathematics, as a field of study, promotes recognizing the diversity in ways of thinking and doing mathematics, challenging the hierarchies and exclusions typical of traditional mathematics education. This research explores the practice of juggling, specifically analyzing three-ball juggling sequences to uncover the mathematical structures and patterns embedded in this ancient art form. In a social association during a workshop, two jugglers and seven juggling learners interact with one of the researchers, a mathematics educator, to co-construct a shared model establishing a symmetrical dialogue based on the Alangui’s principles of “mutual interrogation” between the practice of juggling and the domain of mathematics. The knowledge exchange process is envisioned as a “barter” where both the mathematics educator and the jugglers contribute their unique perspectives to generate new and hybrid understandings. With a qualitative approach, from the analysis of the data collected during the ethnographic field work (notes, audiovisual recordings) emerges how the initial model, created by mathematicians and jugglers, was reinterpreted to better align with the cultural community’s practice. The research revealed that juggling serves as a concrete context for exploring abstract mathematical concepts and that mathematical analysis of juggling sequences helps jugglers gain a deeper understanding of underlying structures, enhancing their creativity. The hybrid model developed in this study offers a promising resource to integrating ethnomathematical perspectives into formal mathematics education, fostering a more situated and engaging learning experience for students. Education is crucial for leading a productive life and obtaining necessary resources. Higher education institutions are progressively incorporating artificial intelligence into conventional teaching methods as a result of innovations in technology. As a high academic record raises a university’s ranking and increases student career chances, predicting learning success has been a central focus in education. Both performance analysis and providing high-quality instruction are challenges faced by modern schools. Maintaining high academic standards, juggling life and academics, and adjusting to technology are problems that students must overcome. In this study, we present a comprehensive dataset, SAPEx-D (Student Academic Performance Exploration), designed to predict student performance, encompassing a wide array of personal, familial, academic, and behavioral factors. Our data collection effort at Air University, Islamabad, Pakistan, involved both online and paper questionnaires completed by students across multiple departments, ensuring diverse representation. After meticulous preprocessing to remove duplicates and entries with significant missing values, we retained 494 valid responses. The dataset includes detailed attributes such as demographic information, parental education and occupation, study habits, reading frequencies, and transportation modes. To facilitate robust analysis, we encoded ordinal attributes using label encoding and nominal attributes using one-hot encoding, expanding our dataset from 38 to 88 attributes. Feature scaling was performed to standardize the range and distribution of data, using a normalization technique. Our analysis revealed that factors such as degree major, parental education, reading frequency, and scholarship type significantly influence student performance. The machine learning models applied to this dataset, including Gradient Boosting and Random Forest, demonstrated high accuracy and robustness, underscoring the dataset’s potential for insightful academic performance prediction. In terms of model performance, Gradient Boosting achieved an accuracy of 68.7% and an F1-score of 68% for the eight-class classification task. For the three-class classification, Random Forest outperformed other models, reaching an accuracy of 80.8% and an F1-score of 78%. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive data in understanding and predicting academic outcomes, paving the way for more personalized and effective educational strategies. Background and Objectives: This study analyzes the effects of proprioceptive training on the physical fitness and soccer-specific technical skills of young professional soccer players. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight male professional soccer players from the Türkiye Football Federation’s Third League, aged 20.46 ± 1.60 years (average), participated voluntarily. Body composition was assessed with the Inbody270 bioelectrical impedance analyzer, while agility and maximal VO2 cardiorespiratory fitness were measured using the ChronoJump smartspeed mat. Soccer-specific technical skill assessments were also conducted. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22, with paired sample t-tests for comparisons, Cohen’s d test for effect size, and repeated measures two-way ANOVA for interaction effects (group × time). Eta squared (η2) values were reported for effect size. A 95% confidence level and p = 0.05 were used. Results: Proprioceptive training significantly improved body fat percentage (p < 0.05; η2 = 0.006) and soccer-specific technical skills, including free juggling (p < 0.05; η2 = 0.302), alternating foot juggling (p < 0.05; η2 = 0.271), right foot juggling (p < 0.05; η2 = 0.250), and shooting performance (p < 0.05; η2 = 0.513). Conclusions: A 12-week proprioceptive training program, when incorporated into soccer practice, significantly enhances soccer-specific technical skills and reduces body fat percentage. Full article

In academic literature, fathers often cite barriers related to their employment, which may halt or negatively influence their level of involvement with their children. This is sometimes reported in relation to practices and policies around leave, such as for new-born children or child illness, and flexibility in leaving the workplace to attend key events in children’s lives. Research has also shown that fathers receiving validation of their paternal status in the workplace is an important factor for fathers’ emotional well-being, work life balance, and self-efficacy. In this study, we look at the needs and priorities of fathers working in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi. We used in-depth one-on-one interviews with employed fathers (n = 50) in order to create a detailed picture of their lived experiences, and with human resources personnel (n = 3) to understand if/how fathers are supported in the workplace. We discuss the implications of these experiences and present fathers’ suggestions for employers and workplaces to provide further support to nurture working conditions in which a work–life balance and employee well-being are more likely to be achieved. Multilingualism has become the norm in families all over the world. These families need to juggle their children’s linguistic identity and integration in their contexts. They may also need professional advice about which language(s) they should use at home, especially when children present with developmental disorders. There is a dearth of studies addressing the role parental views play in home-language maintenance with children with developmental disorders. This study is conducted in Spain, where Spanish is the national language, along with local languages in certain regions, as well as foreign languages. This qualitative study aimed to deepen our understanding of the views about language choice of multilingual families whose children have either typical language development or a developmental disorder in Spain. We recruited 26 parents of multilingual children aged between 5 and 10 years, from different linguistic backgrounds. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. The findings illustrate the complexity and nuance of parents’ views and decisions regarding language choice in their contexts. The themes included identity and belonging, as well as the influences of external advice on parental decisions. It is important that professionals such as speech–language therapists understand these views to enable them to deliver family-centered care. Full article

This paper develops a new vision-based robot customized for table tennis juggling tasks. Specifically, the robot is equipped with two industrial cameras operating as a sensing system. An image-processing algorithm is proposed that allows the robot to balance a table tennis ball while controlling its bounce height. The robot adopts a parallel structure design, and the end effector employs three ball joints to increase the degree of freedom (DOF) of the parallel mechanism. In addition, we design a control scheme explicitly customized for this robotic system. Extensive real-time experiments are performed to show the effectiveness of the juggling robot at different jumping heights. Furthermore, the ability to consistently maintain a fixed preset bounce height is demonstrated. These experimental results confirm the efficacy of the developed robotic system. Full article

A Quantum Approach to News Verification from the Perspective of a News Aggregator

In the dynamic landscape of digital information, the rise of misinformation and fake news presents a pressing challenge. This paper takes a completely new approach to verifying news, inspired by how quantum actors can reach agreement even when they are spatially spread out. We propose a radically new—to the best of our knowledge—algorithm that uses quantum “entanglement” (think of it as a special connection) to help news aggregators “sniff out” bad actors, whether they are other news sources or even fact-checkers trying to spread misinformation. This algorithm does not rely on quantum signatures; it merely uses basic quantum technology which we already have, in particular, special pairs of particles called “EPR pairs” that are much easier to create than other options. More elaborate entangled states are like juggling too many balls—they are difficult to make and slow things down, especially when many players are involved. So, we adhere to Bell states, the simplest form of entanglement, which are easy to generate no matter how many players are involved. This means that our algorithm is faster to set up, works for any number of participants, and is more practical for real-world use. Additionally, as a “bonus point”, it finishes in a fixed number of steps, regardless of how many players are involved, making it even more scalable. This new approach may lead to a powerful and efficient way to fight misinformation in the digital age, using the weird and wonderful world of quantum mechanics. Full article
