Artificial-intelligence-enabled agri-food entrepreneurship is the creation of new ventures and the entrepreneurial renewal of existing firms, whose value propositions and business models are built around learning-based computational systems applied across the food value chain, from primary production and processing to distribution, consumption, and the recovery of losses and by-products. The core enabling technologies are machine learning and computer vision, generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models, and AI-enabled robotics and predictive analytics, deployed with complementary digital infrastructure such as the Internet of Things, big data, cloud and edge computing, blockchain, and digital twins. The concept is broader than technology adoption because its subject is the entrepreneur: how opportunities are recognised or created, how business models convert them into revenue, and why so few technically capable solutions become durable businesses. This entry makes four contributions: It specifies a mechanism—because AI lowers the cost of prediction but not of judgement, opportunities concentrate in decisions that are prediction-intensive, recurrent, and attached to an outcome that the customer already measures. It provides a taxonomy of business-model archetypes that separates value creation from value capture. It establishes the boundary conditions under which digital-entrepreneurship theory transfers to food systems—seasonality, fixed adoption costs, contested data governance, and liability. Finally, it converts the synthesis into seven testable propositions and an evidence calibration separating controlled benchmarks, field pilots, and commercial deployment. Full article

The cooperatives combine a pyramidal structure, in which few members concentrate decision-making power, with ownership dispersed among a broad membership base. This configuration favors adverse selection and moral hazard arising from information asymmetry between managers and stakeholders, which legitimacy theory suggests may be reduced through sustainability disclosure. The study advances the literature by combining three elements not yet integrated in research on cooperatives: the cultural pillar as an autonomous dimension of sustainability, disaggregated analysis by pillar, and risk-adjusted financial performance. The level of sustainability disclosure was analyzed from a stakeholder perspective, along with its association with financial performance. Forty-four expert-validated indicators were applied to 39 cooperatives listed in the 2022 World Cooperative Monitor that published complete reports over the 2020–2022 triennium, resulting in 117 observations, estimated by fixed effects with cluster-robust standard errors. Mean disclosure was 0.52, led by the environmental pillar (0.70), followed by the economic (0.62), social (0.47), and cultural (0.33) pillars. The aggregate index showed no statistically significant association with risk-adjusted financial performance, either for ROA or for ROE, whereas the social dimension remained positive and significant regardless of the metric used. This pattern is consistent with the propositions of legitimacy theory regarding the social pillar, although the underlying mechanisms of information asymmetry reduction and legitimacy strengthening were not directly measured in this study. In this study, biochars derived from agri-food wastes, including different avocado residues (peel- and seed-derived fractions), olive pits and cherry stones, were evaluated as low-cost and sustainable adsorbents for the removal of the emerging contaminants sulfamethoxazole (SMX), antipyrine (ANT) and trazodone (TRZ) from aqueous solutions. Despite their very low BET surface areas, the biochars exhibited notable adsorption capacities, indicating that adsorption performance was mainly governed by surface chemistry rather than textural properties. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surfaces, enabling electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and dipole–dipole interactions with the target contaminants. Adsorption kinetics for all systems were well described by the pseudo-first-order model, with equilibrium capacities closely matching experimental values, suggesting rapid and reversible surface interactions. Intraparticle diffusion analysis revealed that diffusion was not the sole rate-limiting step, with external mass transfer and surface interactions dominating the initial adsorption stage. Equilibrium isotherm analysis showed that SMX and ANT adsorption onto avocado-derived biochars followed the Langmuir model, whereas TRZ adsorption was better described by the Freundlich model. In contrast, olive pit biochar exhibited a markedly higher affinity for TRZ, achieving near-complete removal and fitting the Langmuir isotherm. Finally, high removal efficiencies were maintained when applying the selected biochar to real municipal wastewater, demonstrating robustness under complex matrix conditions. Overall, the results highlight the potential of these agri-food waste-derived biochars, including multiple avocado fractions, as sustainable and economically viable adsorbents for quaternary wastewater treatment. Malaysia’s upstream poultry supply chain, comprising broiler farms, hatcheries, and breeder operations, faces persistent barriers to circular economy (CE) adoption despite growing national policy support. Existing literature has focused predominantly on quantitative assessments of CE performance, leaving a critical gap in contextual, institutional-level understanding of why CE practices remain selectively and unevenly implemented. This paper reports findings from an exploratory qualitative study involving nine semi-structured in-depth interviews with informants drawn primarily from institutional and regulatory stakeholder categories: regulatory agencies (Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia, DVS), industry associations (Federation of Livestock Farmers’ Associations of Malaysia, FLFAM), marketing and distribution agencies (Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, FAMA), research institutions (Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, MARDI), one private sector operator, and academic informants. Thematic analysis reveals five interconnected themes that collectively explain CE implementation gaps as seen from this institutional vantage point: (1) fragmented internal coordination as the primary operational barrier, (2) policy-practice misalignment between regulatory intent and operational realities, (3) the awareness-to-action deficit in CE conceptualisation, (4) differentiated capability constraints across enterprise scales (reported mainly through an industry-association intermediary rather than smallholders directly), and (5) the digital-circular complementarity gap raised by a minority of informants (4 of 9). The study makes three contributions: it generates an institutional-level, qualitative account of CE barriers and enablers for Malaysia’s upstream poultry sector from an institutional perspective; it introduces the concept of capability-sensitive CE governance, situated relative to related constructs such as the dynamic capabilities view, absorptive capacity, and the Technology–Organisation–Environment (TOE) framework, as a novel theoretical construct grounded in empirical evidence; and it proposes a preliminary Circular Economy Implementation Readiness Model (CEIRM), offered as a basis for future validation rather than a tested framework, that outlines a staged, practical pathway for CE adoption at the enterprise level. Findings have exploratory implications for policymakers, agri-food managers, and researchers engaged in circular transitions in developing-economy food systems. Full article

The study presents methodological approaches to developing regional agri-food strategies integrating economic, social, and environmental indicators, aiming to improve socio-economic and environmental efficiency in the context of food security. To assess regional sustainable development, a hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward’s method was applied to compare Russian regions based on indicators of agricultural specialization, economic efficiency, food security, social conditions, and environmental impact. The analysis identified seven distinct regional clusters with significant socio-economic and environmental differences. A critical finding is that all clusters exhibit persistent problems with waste disposal and neutralization, alongside an acute shortage of investment for technological modernization and additional processing capacity. Key priorities for improving efficiency in achieving food security are identified, and differentiated sustainable development strategies for the selected groups are proposed, including recommendations for adapting governance mechanisms and state support. The need for fundamentally new forms of financing innovative businesses is substantiated. This study provides a differentiated framework for developing regulatory tools for regional agri-food systems based on cluster analysis results. The findings have practical value for planning socio-economic and environmental development programs and for formulating state innovation policy in agricultural support. Full article

The fruit agro-export value chain in northern Chile faces governance and water-related challenges that affect its resilience and long-term sustainability. In the context of sustainable agriculture, these challenges highlight the need for integrated approaches to understand how socio-economic and environmental factors interact. This paper proposes a set of measures to assess resilience using a social simulation model based on the Sociology of Organized Action, implemented through the Social Laboratory (SocLab) platform. The model represents actors, their resources, and their interactions as a system driven by strategic behavior. The proposed measures are applied to analyze both simulation outcomes and the structure of the model. The findings indicate that resilience is constrained by power imbalances among actors and by external pressures related to water scarcity. In particular, simulation results show that the influence of Producers reaches only approximately half that of the Public Sector, revealing a significant power imbalance within the value chain. These imbalances create vulnerabilities that limit the system’s capacity to absorb disturbances and adapt to environmental stressors, which are expected to intensify due to climate change and increasing demand. In addition, the resource associated with coordinating actors around the efficient use of water exhibited the highest relevance among the resources considered, highlighting the central role of water governance in shaping resilience. The study contributes by integrating a simulation-based approach with economic and institutional perspectives, linking the distribution of influence among actors to value allocation along the chain, as conceptualized in marketing margin analysis, and interpreting governance structures through Transaction Cost Economics. This integration provides a more comprehensive understanding of how power distribution, coordination mechanisms, and transaction costs jointly shape resilience and sustainability in agri-food value chains. Food loss and waste (FLW) constitutes a structural challenge for agri-food systems. However, current analytical tools for assessing management and valorisation options remain fragmented across disciplines. Existing frameworks rarely capture within a single structure the environmental, social, and economic–institutional feasibility dimensions needed to compare alternative recovery pathways. This study introduces the ESG-FLW Index, a multidimensional composite index designed to support comparative evaluation of FLW valorisation strategies, with particular attention to recovery for human consumption. The index draws on a comparative analysis of eight established frameworks. It integrates Life Cycle Assessment for the environmental pillar; Techno-Economic Assessment together with compliance, data-quality, scalability, and replicability indicators for the governance pillar; and Social Return on Investment for the social pillar. These components are aggregated through Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, following methodological guidance for robust composite indicators. The framework aligns explicitly with the Food Waste Hierarchy and SDG Target 12.3. It also includes hurdle criteria to limit the risk that high aggregate scores obscure critical shortcomings. As a proof of concept, the index was applied to the CiboAmico redistribution programme. Redistribution scored substantially higher than composting (85.1 versus 30.7). The ranking remained stable under ±20% weight variations and Monte Carlo simulations (n = 1000). The ESG-FLW Index offers a transparent and replicable decision-support tool. It is best suited to relative comparison among options and to making sustainability trade-offs explicit. Full article

China’s growing demand for fruit has accelerated the expansion of China-centered agrifood production networks across Southeast Asia. This study examines the integration of Cambodia’s banana export industry into this network from a global production network perspective. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Cambodia between 2023 and 2025, including participant observation, interviews, and worker surveys, the study analyzes lead firms, governance arrangements, labor organization, and value distribution. Chinese agribusiness firms serve as lead firms. Governance is facilitated by economic land concessions, bilateral phytosanitary agreements, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Cambodia Banana Industry Association Federation. The network is characterized by low-wage and highly mobile labor, reflecting tensions between plantation management and workers’ livelihood strategies. Although Cambodia has been integrated into the network as an export-oriented production base, value enhancement has not necessarily translated into greater value capture and remains concentrated in downstream distribution and retail. This study argues that China-centered agrifood production networks reproduce the unequal value distribution observed in established banana commodity chains. Although based on a qualitative single-case study in Cambodia, the findings provide empirical insights into the governance and developmental implications of China-centered agrifood production networks and offer a foundation for future comparative research. Sustainable agricultural value chains are increasingly governed through information infrastructures, such as traceability systems, certification schemes, auditing protocols, and verification mechanisms. This paper, however, argues that information and temporal coordination are distinct governance capacities. Drawing on a comparative interpretive analysis of twenty-seven sustainability-oriented agricultural value chain initiatives, supported by an iterative inductive–deductive coding matrix and cross-case synthesis, the paper examines how sustainability is rendered governable across public programs, corporate strategies, international development projects, supranational policy frameworks, and multi-stakeholder initiatives. It shows that contemporary initiatives consistently frame sustainability as a coordination problem and rely heavily on instruments that generate visibility and verification. Yet comparatively few mechanisms are devoted to sustaining alignment across the extended time horizons through which many sustainability outcomes emerge. The comparative analysis identifies a governance asymmetry in the document collection: it devotes extensive attention to mechanisms for making sustainability visible, while comparatively fewer mechanisms address the obligations, risks, rewards, and expectations of actors that unfold across ecological, institutional, financial, market, and livelihood timelines. The paper contributes to value chain governance and sustainability scholarship by conceptualizing sustainable agricultural value chains as systems that must address temporal coordination and by arguing that durable and resilient sustainability transitions require not only better information but also institutional capacities to coordinate across multiple time horizons. With the global green transition of trade and rising sustainable development demands in agri-food trade, non-tariff barriers (NTBs) have become a critical factor influencing the sustainable development of agricultural trade. As a major global producer and exporter of fruits, China’s fruit trade is inevitably affected by non-tariff barriers. This study therefore examines the impacts of NTBs on China’s fruit exports to APEC countries. We use panel data of 13 APEC countries from 2001 to 2023 and apply an extended gravity model. This study takes the total number of TBT and SPS notifications as the proxy variable for NTBs. It empirically tests the trade effect of NTBs on China’s fruit exports and conducts heterogeneity analysis via quantile regression and grouped regression. Baseline results show that NTBs significantly reduce China’s fruit exports. The negative effects of NTBs are more pronounced for small-scale export markets and processed fruit products. Furthermore, China’s economic development can effectively mitigate the adverse trade impacts of NTBs. These findings furnish actionable implications for balancing food safety governance and sustainable agricultural development. Full article

Sustainable agri-food value chains depend on the capacity of smallholders to participate in markets in stable, remunerative and upgrade-oriented ways, yet in conflict-affected and politically constrained settings this capacity is weakened by mobility restrictions, insecure logistics, payment disruption, volatile inputs, thin market information and uncertain enforcement. This study aims to explain how such constraints reshape smallholder market integration and under what conditions governance and institutional arrangements stabilize, rather than reproduce, market exclusion. An integrative review was conducted following established methodological guidance. A structured search of Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar, extended by citation tracing, returned 821 records; after de-duplication and two-stage screening against explicit eligibility criteria, 44 studies were retained, of which 35 empirical studies form the evidence corpus. Each study was coded with a five-field extraction matrix across seven diagnostic dimensions—inputs and supplies, production capacity and technology, end-markets and trade, value-chain governance, sustainable production and energy use, value-chain finance, and the business and socio-political environment—and appraised for methodological quality with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, so that heterogeneous designs were weighted rather than treated as equivalent. The synthesis shows that the most binding constraints are transactional and institutional rather than purely technical, and that governance operates as a conditional bridge: cooperatives, contracting, trader coordination, market-support institutions and public enabling arrangements lower transaction costs and stabilize exchange only where transparency, credible enforcement, fair risk-sharing and protection against opportunism are present; where these are absent, the same arrangements shift risk onto farmers. The review derives a measurement-focused, equity-sensitive research agenda for resilient and sustainable value-chain integration under constraints. Full article

Agricultural reconversion has become a key strategy for the continuity and competitiveness of primary-sector productive units, confronting scenarios such as low profitability, environmental pressures, and changes in agri-food markets. The objective of this study was to identify the economic, social, and environmental factors that influenced the agricultural reconversion to lemon cultivation (Citrus limon) in production units in the municipality of Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Mexico. During 2023 and 2024, a total of 32 semi-structured interviews were conducted with producers who had undertaken restructuring processes, from which perception variables were constructed across three dimensions: economic, social, and crop management. Through cluster analysis, three distinct profiles were identified based on their perceptions, resource use, and organizational characteristics (p < 0.05). Results indicate that economic factors are the main driver of productive change (low crop profitability p = 0.0035); however, environmental dimension and efficient resource management, particularly water, are crucial to consolidating the conversion. Furthermore, government support, production experience, and membership in organizations influence perceptions of viability and the prospects of the new crop. Agricultural public policy analysis in Mexico is hampered by data fragmentation across 32 decentralized state agencies. This study presents the Mexican Agricultural Policy Observatory (MAPO), a digital governance tool developed using R-Shiny to centralize and visualize policy information. Through a systematic audit and functional classification adapted from World Bank frameworks, 429 were analyzed. Results indicate a significant concentration in financing (42%) and a critical gap in commercialization support. MAPO enhances transparency and enables evidence-based policymaking by cross-referencing policy data with production metrics, facilitating the identification of regional priorities and strategic opportunities for integrated agricultural development. The beef production chain plays a strategic role in Brazilian and global agri-food systems and faces growing demands for sustainability, transparency, and traceability. Building on official Animal Transit Guide (GTA) records from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, this study examines whether a parsimonious agent-based model (ABM) can generate the main structural signatures of an observed cattle-trade network. The empirical benchmark is a directed and weighted network with 20,827 nodes and 258,120 weighted edges. The ABM represents producers and slaughterhouses as spatial agents connected by trade decisions based on three mechanisms: destination attractiveness, defined as the accumulated pull of a slaughterhouse based on previous simulated throughput; geographic distance, representing spatial friction; and relational memory, representing the tendency to repeat previous commercial ties. Producer choice is formalized through a local utility function that combines attractiveness, distance penalty, and relational memory under capacity, sourcing-radius, and saturation constraints. In the simulated scenarios, the top-five slaughterhouses accounted for 38.49 ± 2.56% of throughput at reduced scale and 14.40 ± 0.65% at intermediate scale, while weighted mean distances were 11.94 ± 0.56 and 9.07 ± 0.39 model units, respectively. The model reproduced, in structural and mechanistic terms, the emergence of dominant hubs, the concentration of flows, and the bounded increase in transaction distance with connectivity around the empirical threshold of kw ≈ 256. Sensitivity analyses indicated that attractiveness increases concentration, distance localizes transactions, and relational memory can stabilize repeated ties when recurrent activation is represented. Rather than reconstructing individual transactions, estimating policy impacts, or identifying a unique parameter vector, the model provides a generative explanation of how local trade rules can produce macro-level network patterns consistent with the observed cattle-trade regime. These findings support future prospective analyses of cattle governance, traceability, and sustainability within the broader context of Livestock 4.0. Full article

The European Union’s Farm-to-Fork (F2F) Strategy sets an ambitious agenda for a socio-ecological transition, positioning agriculture as a critical sector for achieving sustainable food systems. However, its implementation faces significant systemic barriers that hinder its transformative potential. This paper applies a diagnostic framework, derived from the H2020-funded PHOENIX project, that identifies six key challenges to democratic innovations in environmental governance: prolonged timeframes for tangible results, the complexity of environmental issues, the need for transcalar cooperation, the imperative to foster behavioural change, limited deliberative dialogue, and the need to build mutual trust. Through a review of public policies and scholarly literature, this analysis evaluates how these challenges manifest within the F2F Strategy, impacting farmers and the broader agri-food system. The findings demonstrate that barriers to F2F implementation are not solely technical or economic but are deeply linked to governance fragmentation, uneven knowledge flows, and deficits in trust relations. Crucially, the study reveals that Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) and associated Education and Training (ET) consistently emerge as pivotal enabling mechanisms to mitigate these constraints. The research generates actionable recommendations to reinforce F2F by redefining the roles of innovation, education, and multi-level collaboration in building resilient and sustainable EU agri-food systems.
